What you know, and what you don’t

n a world that’s increasingly fragmented and siloed, we need newspapers. Or at least the service they provide– a place to get a variety of news and advertising. Today, you can find out anything about anything. But what if you don’t know what you’re looking for? Or that you’re even looking for something?

This is the important role newspapers and other general interest news sources offer, be it a paper, a local newsletter, dedicated news sites, radio or the sign board at the post office. The algorithms that drive advertising on Facebook and Google are only informed by past browsing history, they can’t look into the subconscious, or the future. Have you recently searched for hotel rooms in Regina? All of a sudden, you will be bombarded with ads for hotels and motels and maybe the occasional rental car too. But what about if you don’t know that you want to go to Regina for the weekend? What if you haven’t even considered taking a little holiday because you’re busy with your life and will feel regret when summer is over and you didn’t get away? The algorithms can’t help with that.

This holds true in cases big and small. If you want to know everything about the newest half-ton truck, you can go to the internet and read about specs and prices and more reviews than you can handle. You can

Kate Jackman-Atkinson build and you can price your dream model. But what if you’re not actively in the market for a new truck or a new house? Stumbling across an ad in a general interest location is the only way to learn about things you don’t yet know you want or aren’t already looking for.

It’s not just houses, cars and hotel rooms. Would knowing that steaks and ice cream are currently on sale make you happy and save you some money? Would knowing that this week, you can stock up on your favourite products be good to know? Would your family enjoy going to the local fair that you didn’t know was happening because you haven’t been involved before? We don’t just need things we’re looking for, we also need the things we don’t know we want or need. Sometimes, coming across an ad leads to a new way of solving a problem, a solution that Google algorithms wouldn’t give you.

July 12, 1950 more than a memory

n a Canadian military website, it is noted: The Korean War erupted on June 25, 1950, when North Korea invaded South Korea. On this day, July 12, a group of Royal Canadian ships stopped in Hawaii on their way to Korea. “Three destroyers, HMCS Cayuga, Athabaskan and Sioux, set sail for the Far East. They arrived in the theatre of operations later that summer, ready to take part in the battle for the Pusan bridgehead in Korea. Five other Tribal class destroyers, HMCS Crusader, Huron, Iroquois, Nootka, and Haida, served with the ‘Canadian Destroyer Division, Far East’ as part of the United Nations (UN) fleet halfway around the world in the waters off Korea during the war.

Korea is a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water, so the navy had an opportunity to support the UN forces in several different ways. The Canadian destroyers did things like blockading the enemy coast, preventing amphibious landings by the enemy, protecting aircraft carriers from the threat of submarine and aerial attack, bombarding enemy-held coastal areas and bringing assistance to those in need in isolated South Korean fishing villages.

Our ocean-going destroyers even made a run up a Korean river in December 1950, when the port city of Chinnampo was facing a massive enemy advance and the order was given to evacuate. UN ships, including three Canadian destroyers, were sent to help. It would not be easy– Chinnampo was more than 30 kilometres up the Taedong River, a waterway heavily mined by the North Koreans.

MY PERSPECTIVE

Now, maybe you like only seeing ads for the things you’re actively looking for, but what about news? The same principle holds. If you want to dive down a rabbit hole, learning everything you can about a certain topic, the internet is a great place. But how were you first exposed to that topic? Chances are, you stumbled upon it.

How do you learn about proposed changes at the municipal, provincial or federal government levels that will have an impact on you? Or about a hospital closure? How else do you learn about local events or volunteer opportunities? How do you feel inspired by the great things people in your community have been able to accomplish? You need to have some general interest news source.

I think that sometimes, we put too much of an emphasis on specialization. There are certainly times when you want or need deep knowledge; this information used to be rare, and therefore valuable. But now, knowing everything you can is easy and cheap, but the internet hasn’t yet found a way to tell us about the things we don’t know and don’t even realize that we want to know. When the opportunity arises, gather all the information you can about something, but there’s also a time and a place for broadening your outlook.

The HMCS Cayuga, was my brother John’s ship. In 1950, when this action took place, he was only 17 .

I am not sure if this is the incident, but he said on one occasion, the ship was approached by a large raft full of people claiming to be refugees. There were men, women, children and tarps and boxes on a raft. When the raft got close to the Cayuga, the “refugees” threw off the tarp and revealed a machine gun and proceeded to open fire on the ship. John said there were bullets bouncing off the ship all over the place. In his words, and he named the sailor (but I can’t remember the name), as a big farm boy from Saskatchewan, was able to swing a big gun around and blast the raft. John said when they were done, there was no raft, no gun and no men, women, or children either.

This and other incidents scarred him for life.

When the veterans came home from our many wars, be it the Boer War, WWI, WWII, the Korean War or the Afghanistan War, the men and women were often traumatized. Now

they call it Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It’s always been there and there’s no denying it.

I was only two years old when the Korean War broke out, nearly 70 years ago. Except for the Afghanistan War, there are few veterans left. In light of all our veterans did for us, in spite of what someone’s personal views on war may be, we should be looking after our veterans.

I know I am well known for my conservative views and generally am opposed to liberal views; there is one defining moment in our current prime minister’s term of office that should cause him to be voted out of office.

That moment came when Justin Trudeau was asked by a wounded veteran for more help. Trudeau answered that “Veterans were asking more than we can afford to give”. That simplistic and rather stupid answer was cause enough in my mind for Trudeau to resign. He should have resigned, but he didn’t. Perhaps the electorate will see that justice is served in the 2019 election.

he day had been pleasantly warm, almost hot, and the wind had been no more than a gentle breeze, a perfect summer day. There were little outside tasks that kept me occupied. The water feature behind my home was dismantled and moved, old wires cut and rolled (made the back side of my home much tidier), earth shovelled and shifted.

And a little puttering in the garage. My kind of day. Busy with little things, filled with wondrous pleasure.

I busied myself in the house late afternoon and early evening.

Some phone calls, some emails, some peopling. A little cleaning and a little tidying, a little sitting and a little game playing.

Again, busy with little things, filled with wondrous pleasure.

The sun’s light lingers long these days. It was nearing midnight when the dogs and I stepped out. The dogs thought the outing would be to the corner and back. They were wrong. The cool, silent night called me. We turned east and strolled, this time I was led. The streaks of the disappearing light wove mystery in the northern sky. A few stars twinkled, the faint crescent of the resting moon hovered just over a dark cloud. Not threatening,

T

here is one rule every driver follows religiously: When your vehicle’s fuel tank is close to being empty, fill it up.

Vehicles do not run on faith and fumes. Never have, never will.

Yet, for many of us, “running on empty” is how we live. We spend many hours each day doing things for our work, our families or our communities. Time for relaxation and self-care is a luxury we feel we can’t afford.

Now there are times, especially in rural areas, when long hours are not an option. Seed time, harvest and haying must be done when weather conditions permit. Long days at our jobs are becoming increasingly common. Our bodies can handle the occasional long day. They can even handle two or three in a row.

But in this life, no one is invincible. As the long days increase, our minds and bodies tend to slow down. Sometimes they will temporarily shut down. Our “get up and go” vanishes, and it may not come back for several days or more.

When this happens, it could be a sign that you are suffering from burnout. Burnout is defined as “a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.

It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained and unable to meet constant demands.” (Source: www.helpguide.org) Every case of burnout is as unique as the person suffering from it. So are the sources of stress that create the exhaustion victims feel. For some, it’s a toxic workplace; for others, a dysfunctional relationship, a volunteer position that suddenly demands far more hours than we initially thought it would or a tragic event that requires excessive amounts of time and money to repair the damage it caused.

But these (and many other) sources of stress all share a common trait. They consume huge amounts of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual energy– energy that we do not replenish by getting enough rest, eating well or taking time for personal renewal.

My first experience with burnout happened over 30 years ago.

It was so severe that I had to take a year off work. This experience taught me an important lesson. The best way to prevent

peaceful, cyclic. These thoughts flickered and faded as I chose to be present. To the silence, the darkness. I felt the silence, the darkness, the breath of life within me, the companionship of my little dogs, their leash dragging on the soft dirt. I sensed their reluctance to be out with me, past their bedtime. I felt tiny small in this universe, and I felt giant big in this universe.

The breath of the Creator within me, beside me, around me.

There was no breeze, no rustling of leaves or grass. There was the scent of the fresh mown grass on the road allowance, the lingering scent of the sun warmed evergreens. No song of birds, not the gentle coo of the dove, the raucous crow and raven, not even the call of a robin. All my avian friends had settled for the night, awaiting the first rays of dawn.

Slowly I (we) turned homeward. My steps slowed even more, for I was reluctant to leave the sacred dark of night, for now it was fully dark, each star now distinct and brilliant. I marvelled at how wondrously safe I felt/feel in this community.

For those who worry for me– I did not leave the road, did not pass the compost area where wildlife feed, nor did I traverse the cemetery– simply silently wandered up and down my immediate area!

As I re-entered my home, I was again filled with gratitude and a sense of awe. Henry Hoover and Miss Daisy cast a disgruntled look and headed for bed. Again, I lingered. Thankful for the shelter of the four walls, the sound roof, my caring neighbours and my contentment with my life– who I am, where I am. My life is full and rewarding, each day has a purpose. It had been a perfect three part day, three distinct sections and each one of them, each one of them was perfect. burnout is to reduce the amount of stress in our lives. That is easier said than done, I know. But here are some guidelines that have helped me.

First, focus on your highest priorities. I have three– personal growth, my family and my work. Keeping those three in balance isn’t always easy. Demands from one can crowd out the other two for a time, but eventually the balance is restored and I can fulfil my responsibilities to myself, my family and my employer.

Second, choose extra activities carefully and limit the amount of time you give to them. If they demand more than you can give, walk away. Don’t jeopardize your future well-being by taking on more than you know you can handle.

Third– and most important– give God your tomorrows. He knows how many you have. He knows the challenges you will face each day. He knows what you will need to successfully meet and overcome each challenge. And he has people and provisions already set aside so that when you need them, they will be there.

When we give God our tomorrows, we are free to give this day our undivided attention; accepting each task as an assignment from God and using our resources to complete it and do it well. I can’t think of a better way to keep from running on empty; can you?

Did you know that right here on the prairies we can grow apples that are as good as those that are grown anywhere in the world? Believe it or not but we can compare our quality of apples to those grown in the Okanagan, the Annapolis Valley and other places around the world.

The three largest producers of apples around the world in order from one to three are China, United States and then Poland with China producing over 44 million tonnes.

In order to appreciate what it takes to grow delicious apples it is important to realize that all of the cultivars of apples that we see in the grocery store are not grown from seed, but instead are propagated asexually or also commonly called, produced by clones. The reason this is necessary is that in order for an apple tree to produce apples, it needs to be crosspollinated with another apple tree. What this means from a genetics perspective

is that there is huge diversity contained within that apple seed and each seed will grow into something that is unique from every other seed within that apple. It may produce fruit that is completely unique or it may not produce any fruit at all.

Another interesting fact is that the apple industry worldwide has been undergoing change. As stated earlier each apple tree is produced asexually so a graft from the desired type of apple is grafted onto a compatible rootstock. This rootstock began as a complete tree with a root system and a single stem. In the apple industry most often this rootstock is a dwarf rootstock which will have an effect on the apple tree itself to keep it smaller in stature and will also have an effect when fruit is produced.

The apple industry has been utilizing dwarf rootstock for many years as the trees themselves are smaller, require less maintenance, pruning is easier as they are shorter trees. The production has proven to result in larger fruit and in fact more fruit can be

produced on the same size of land base.

As mentioned above, the rootstock will affect the age when the tree begins to bear fruit. Generally speaking, dwarf apples will produce two to three years after planting while semi-dwarf apples will usually begin to bear fruit at four to five years after planting. Standard apples may take seven to 10 years to reach maturity and begin to bear fruit. Please note that dwarf trees will need staking or a trellis to support themselves and stay upright when fruiting.

The top part of the tree is referred to as scion wood.

This scion wood is collected during the winter while the tree is dormant and should be one quarter to three eighth of an inch in diameter. Store the scion wood in a cool, moist location with temperatures close to 34 F. Do not freeze but keep the humidity high and very close to freezing.

Grafting during late summer should occur when there is sufficient movement within the tree that the bark slips or in other words when the bark

of the stock easily separates from the wood and buds are fully developed. Budding and specifically T-budding is the chosen grafting method where a single bud is taken from the scion wood onto the root stock. This method is faster than other grafting techniques and the success rate is generally quite high as a stronger union is formed between the scion wood and the root stock. Even for a novice grafter, this method

has proven to be one of the best options. The bud will remain dormant until spring and once the graft site has healed the wood above the graft will be removed.

Please note that in order to do this grafting a sharp, good quality knife is essential. The graft should be wrapped with grafting tape which is a specialized tape used for grafting. Over the years many other tapes and methods have been used.

When I first learned to graft, we wrapped the graft site with rubber bands and paraffin.

It took a fine hand to ensure the wrapping was tight but not too tight to keep the graft site from desiccating but not so tight that the graft site would be strangled and not allow the sap to flow.

Youth Beef Round-up

The 12th Annual Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up will be held Aug. 2 to 4, in Neepawa, MB. This exciting three-day event will bring together junior members, 4-Hers, and cattle enthusiasts from all across the province.

The show is organized by volunteers from various beef breeds that have been involved with national and provincial shows in the past. Our goal is to prepare young entrepreneurs in the livestock industry through this exciting showcase of youth, cattle and friendly competition. This event will educate, encourage, stimulate and unite participants in the business of agriculture and the beef industry. It encompasses a variety of competitions and events to match all interests and skill levels of participants. Some of the events are Team Grooming, Individual and Team Judging, Showmanship, Impromptu Speeches, Art, Photography, Scrapbooking, as well as cattle confirmation classes.

This will be a celebration and showcase of Manitoba Youth and agriculture in our province. We encourage young and old to stay involved in the agriculture industry, explore career opportunities, increase national trade and awareness, and be proud to be part of one of Canada’s largest industries.

We feel the celebration of our past shows exemplifies the importance of youth and agriculture and will strive to present innovative opportunities that promote and educate future cattleman dedicated to the cattle industry.

Roundup is being undertaken as an All Breeds Junior Show to bring young purebred and commercial cattle producers from across the province to see friendly competition amongst the new and upcoming producers from within Manitoba.
