Health care, right around the corner

n communities across the province, Manitobans don’t have easy access to health care. Physician shortages have left many without a family doctor and ER closures have moved health care that’s accessible on short notice further down the highway.

Necessity is the mother of invention and shortages when it comes to finding family physicians have forced government to re-evaluate the ways in which some health services are provided. Manitobans need to see a doctor for many potentially life threatening conditions, but also for a lot of routine ones. Across the province, waiting rooms are clogged with people who need medical exams for insurance purposes, vaccinations, or prescriptions to treat common, but not life threatening, ailments.

For many Manitobans, these benign doctor’s visits can be a huge undertaking. They might have to schedule an appointment weeks in advance, take time off work or travel to a completely different community. None of this makes health care accessible and has a huge cost to both individuals and the health care system. Not being able to get in and address these needs can result in minor issues becoming major ones.

While a family physician may be hard to find in some communities, there is one form of health care that is quite accessible– pharmacists. Located in communities across the province, pharmacists are available regular, or extended, retail hours and you can talk to them without

Kate Jackman-Atkinson an appointment. They also tend to be members of the community, with a personal connection to their clients and their health.

In 2013, the Manitoba government announced new legislation that expanded what pharmacists are able to do.

These expanded services, which came into effect in 2014, allow pharmacists to issue short-term refill prescriptions for patients with chronic diseases who couldn’t make it to their doctor. It also allows them to undergo additional training in order to provide more health care services, including providing vaccinations for influenza and travel, and prescribe medications for what are known as self-limiting conditions. These are straight forward conditions with safe and effective drugs available for their treatment, such as athlete’s foot and acne. In Alberta, pharmacists have had these capabilities since 2007.

Pharmacists in Manitoba are looking for expanded prescribing powers and for many routine medications, it

makes a lot of sense. It never seemed like an efficient use of medical resources to make an appointment for an initial prescription, and especially for a renewal, of common, safe and non-addictive medications. After all, a pharmacists is capable of taking a blood pressure reading and asking medical questions, then referring anything but the most straightforward cases to a physician for assessment.

I think things are changing within the profession, but we’ve all had experiences with physicians who do nothing but prescribe ever more medications after the most cursory of assessments. While pharmacists do make money filling prescriptions, for many patients, seeing a doctor certainly isn’t resulting in outcomes that aren’t medication-focused.

Not only are pharmacists very accessible, many people also feel that their pharmacist is more approachable and has more time to talk to them. Patients want to know about what they have been prescribed, they want to know about their medication, what it will do, what it won’t do and what it could do. Pharmacists are required to tell you this information when first filling your prescription.

In a stretched health care system that sometimes doesn’t have as much time as it should for patients, allowing pharmacists to play an expanded role makes sense. Their education has been focused on understanding medications and how they work, they should be able to use this training to inform patients and help ensure they’re getting the medication they need, when they need it.

To be or not to be in God’s will

Lewis observed: “What Satan put into the heads of our remote ancestors was the idea that they could ‘be like gods’– could set up on their own as if they had created themselves– be their own masters– invent some sort of happiness for themselves outside God, apart from God. And out of that hopeless attempt has come nearly all that we call human history– money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery– the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.”

Lewis is best known for his works of fiction, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Space Trilogy and for his nonfiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles and The Problem of Pain. Lewis was a very good writer and he also had a small connection to western Manitoba.

Lewis’ cousin was the Rev. Richard Lloyd-Davies, an Anglican priest who served in Neepawa and Brandon.

Lloyd-Davies told me personally that the famous “wardrobe” in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was a wardrobe or closet in the Lewis house and Lloyd-Davies played in that wardrobe as a child.

But back to the statement at the beginning of this column, about inventing some sort of happiness for themselves outside God, apart from God. Lewis identifies the troubles

Ken Waddell that mankind has gotten into for all the centuries since people’s time on earth began. One can argue creation being 6,000 to 7,000 years ago or millions of years ago. It doesn’t much matter as people have often drifted away from God’s plan in pursuit of an alternative.

There is a funny story told about a very learned professor who was so well educated and so heavy into biosciences that he decided to challenge God to a creation test. He walked right up to God and stated, “I can make a man out of dust just like you did.” God replied, “Go ahead!” Being up for the challenge, the professor stooped down to pick up some dirt just like God had done to create Adam.

God stepped forward and said, “Just a minute sir, you have to find your own dirt.”

Then there is the story of the three men who died and went to heaven.

The first made his case before God that he had faith in Jesus and he had been a good servant. He was asked to sit at God’s side. The second man made his case before God that he had faith in Jesus and had done many

things to help the poor. He was invited to sit at God’s side. The third man made his case before God that he had faith in Jesus and he had worked hard, but he was a bit arrogant. God paused as he thought about where to seat the third man when, out of his well practised arrogance, he blurted out to God, “I think you are in my chair.” That might not have ended well.

Lewis’ point is well taken. Mankind tries to invent and re-invent things to do that will replace God. Life can be so simple. We are born, we live and we die. If we accept God, his plan and salvation, the live is pretty straightforward, in spite of the tragedies that may befall us. God is good, even in the hardest of times.

I started out at Souris Collegiate for two years, then for a total of 40 years in Rivers. I taught junior high for 18 years and then 22 years as principal and teacher at Rivers Elementary.

First Job: Working on our family farm.

Hobbies: My passion is retriever training. I have belonged to the Brandon Retriever Club since 1974 and trained 11 dogs in that time. Some have become trial champs, some were sold to other hunters. I still do some judging at local field trials. My other hobbies would be hunting, fishing, camping and baseball.

Comment: We are happily retired in Rivers. I get great satisfaction from the fact that I was able to teach the children of Rivers and area for 40 years.

was another night that sleep eluded and avoided me. I am accustomed to that fact, not liking it, but accepting. I am not worried or upset, just sleepless. Often, bits of songs float through the darkness, or conversations– real and imagined!

This night, my mind reviewed the reader from probably the fifth grade. One story, “The Longest Way Round is the Shortest Way Home” came, complete with pictures. The lad was determining whether it was easier to go home the shortest distance– up and over a small mountain, or the longer way– around the base of the incline. The conclusion was that it may take more steps to walk around, but it took less time and energy. Why this story visited, I am not certain. Perhaps I needed to remember that it is okay to take the easy way!

The pages of the reader turned and the picture was of a goat tethered to the chimney on the roof of a sod home.

The man of the house was trying to do the work of his wife– I don’t recall why– and between looking after the wee child, churning the cream and watching the soup, he thought that anchoring the goat on the roof would be a good idea, and helpful. I believe that the goat ended up falling off the roof, etc… and why this story surfaced, I have no idea. Am I trying to do too many things at once?

Don’t think so, but I have been wrong before!

Just a few pages further was the tale of the woman who felt her home was too small for her and her husband and one child. She sent her husband to speak to the wise man and find a solution. The answer was to bring her parents to live with them. When that didn’t bring contentment, visit after visit to the elder resulted in the addition of the chickens, then a pig and then a cow. All these now under one roof! When the woman insisted on one more consult with the wise one, the recommendation was to evict all but the original unit. And low and behold, the tiny home now seemed spacious and sufficient! Again with pictures.

I got to thinking about the stories we read in those readers. As we moved from grade to grade, they became more thought provoking, including poetry and scripture.

Shakespeare and Psalms, Frost and Tennyson. A wide assortment of thought provoking ideas presented in varying means. Helped me discern what and who I liked for reading.

Remember when we had to memorize poetry? My father was a master at reciting appropriate lines and sonnets.

Rivers and Area Game & Fish Boat Launch/ Abe Wiebe Memorial

This boat launch and picnic area is located just east of Road 119W and Rd 72 N, approx. 3 miles north of Rivers.

In the days before the formation of Lake Wahtopanah, Rd 72N went straight across the valley, with a bridge over Little Saskatchewan River. Now, there is a boat launch on either side of the lake. On the east side is the Brandon Wildlife Dock and on the west side, just east of Road 119W, is the boat launch and picnic area maintained by Rivers and Area Game & Fish Association. In 2013, the picnic area was dedicated to the memory of long-time member and avid fisherman, Abe Wiebe. Features include an ample parking possible plans for further development of the area.

Rivers minor baseball set for 2019

As a long winter draws closer to the end hopefully very soon, and all the snow disappears, it is time to start thinking about spring and the upcoming baseball season.

Rivers Minor Baseball has seen incredible growth over the past few years, with over 100 kids playing the game as part of our association in 2018. 103 registered players to be exact. With the new diamond close to be completed and continuing work by the Rivers Baseball Association to upgrade the facility we are looking forward to another exciting season.

Viterra Field be will ready to go this season and will be used for kids of all ages, and with the portable fence will be able to be used as the second diamond for the Senior AA championships this August that the Comets are hosting. The Baseball Association has raised close to $19,000 of the $26,000 budget to complete the diamond through the buy a foot campaign and through the social that was held on New Years Eve. Rivers HELP is also holding a social on March 16 with the proceeds donated back to the project, which is greatly appreciated. Tickets are available at locations throughout town.

Minor Baseball registration will take place on Wednesday, March 6 as part of the spring registration night at the Riverdale Community Centre. With age groups ranging from Tee Ball, for players as young as 4 and 5 years old to 18U. Our 18U team will be hosting the Midwest Regional Championship this July at Comet Field, the first time that Rivers Minor has hosted such an event.

An umpires clinic is also being planned for April, all interested individuals should contact president Aaron Tycoles by the end of March. We are also looking for volunteers, either from parents of volunteers in the community to umpire, help coach or sit on our executive, as well as anyone willing to volunteer at the Regionals or the Senior Provincials. Riverdale harvest food bank

The Riverdale Harvest met for their monthly meeting on Monday, Feb. 11, at the Zion Church. At that meeting, they welcomed a new member, Leslee Brown, who has accepted the position of treasurer as well. While many topics were discussed, one of great importance was our current state of stock. While we are always appreciative of everything that is donated, we are currently very low on canned vegetables and fruits. Anyone wishing to donate can drop their donation to any of the churches here in town.

Next on the list to discuss was our service area. At present we are responsible for the entire RM of Riverdale, as well as the RM of Oakview. The question was posed, “Are we reaching all potential clients?” Discussion ensued about the size of the area, how to educate people about what’s available to them and how to get a food hamper to those who need it, but are unable to come to us. As no full answer was obtained the discussion was tabled to be brought up again at the next meeting. Meeting was 580--2nd Avenue, Rivers adjourned and next meeting was Sunday school/morning set for Monday, March 11, at 7 service at 10:30 a.m. p.m. at the Zion Church.

Reeve Fortune reported on the updates completed to the Midwest Planning Zoning bylaw and the C.A.O. informed council of information received from Peter Anderson, from Community Planning.

Reeve Fortune reported on the Midwest Recreation District meeting he attended in Hamiota. It was reported that the 2019 budget would remain the same as the 2018 budget. Appointing a representative at large to the board was discussed, as well as changes to grant application guidelines.

The Machinery Committee reported on a tandem truck that is for sale. A committee is to review the vehicle to see if it would be suitable for municipal use. A request for a proposal for a new grader was

placed on MERX on Jan. 14, 2019. A trade-in inquiry was discussed with Council.

The Rapid City utility was discussed. One leak was found on Jan. 14 and repaired but it is believed that there is another leak which is being sought.

Costs to replace curb stops in Rapid City were discussed.

The Waste & Recycling Committee discussed information received from Clean Manitoba. An environmental impairment liability questionnaire was reviewed with Council.

The C.A.O. informed Council of items purchased for the Rapid City Fire Department and that a company was out to see if repairs could be done to the overhead doors.

RM of Oakview Tuesday, Feb. 12 Reeve Fortune reported on the Midwest Planning District meeting he attended in Miniota. Interviews are to be done for the vacant Midwest Planning District positions.

Reeve Fortune also reported on the Park Residence Board meeting he attended in January in Hamiota. Repairs to be done were discussed.

Councillor van Veen reported on the Rapid City Beach Restoration project.

Work is progressing and should be completed in the near future. Some additional work proposed to be done to the shoreline was discussed.

Attendance at the Municipal Officials Seminar to be held in Winnipeg on Mar. 19 and 20, 2019 and the weed meeting to be held in Carberry were discussed. Repairs being done on the weed board truck were discussed.

A report on the L.U.D. Committee of Rapid City was received by email and reviewed with Council. Speed limits going into Rapid City were discussed.

Public Works Supervisor, Mel Alex, attended the meeting and updated Council regarding the Rapid City utility. Some leaks have been repaired but due to water usage, there is another leak to be found. Sealed tenders

for a new municipal grader were opened while the public supervisor was in attendance at the meeting. Quotes were reviewed and a salesman from Toromont Cat is to be asked to attend the next meeting of Council to discuss the proposal received.

A public hearing was held on Feb. 12, 2019 to hear representation for or against the proposed Conditional Use Order Application No. 01-O-19-CU, being made

by Linda Vint to provide for the establishment of a NonFarm Dwelling within the “AG� Agricultural General Zone. The application was approved.

Offer to purchase land in Rapid City-other lots were suggested to the interested individual and they are being looked at for possible development.

Amalgamation of Conservation Districts -changes impacting Oakview were brought to the attention of Council. The C.A.O. was instructed to contact our conservation district for further information. No word has been received from PUB in regards to a proposed water rate increase. Leaks were found on Feb. 5 and 6.

A resignation was received from the relief operator in

Rapid City. Rapid City rink-an update regarding our insurance claim was received.

An email in regards to the operation of the Rapid City arena was brought to the attention of Council.

Speed limits going into Rapid City-letters received and information regarding the Traffic and Transportation Modernization Act were reviewed. Council is requesting that the speed limit signs be placed further out of Rapid City from all directions and apply to Manitoba Infrastructure for necessary authorization.

Rapid City Lagoon-Council authorized the consultant to proceed with finalizing the lagoon design based on the proposed land exchange after initial discussions with the Real Estate Services Division.

Rapid City Beach Restoration Project-water levels in private wells were discussed.

Closing of public lane in Rapid City-plan of survey still must be received.

Asset management-the C.A.O. was required to contact MuniSight regarding an updated quote. Information on a GPS system was received.

Council Oakview agreed to purchase the used 2009

and sewer lines were discussed and the C.A.O. was instructed to inform the individual that lots would not be able to be serviced at this time. The individual is to be informed of other lots available for sale.

Offer to purchase land in Oak River-additional information was given to an individual interested in purchasing a lot. Council authorized Reeve Fortune, Councillor Neil Wilson and C.A.O. Diane Kuculym to attend the South Central Mutual Aid District meeting to be held in Newdale on Thursday, Feb. 7. Minnedosa Fire Agreement- a minor amendment was approved. Rapid City rink-information was received from the insurance provider and was reviewed with Council. Insurance

money is still outstanding.

Administration is to obtain more information in regards to passing a by-law for speed limits into Rapid City.

Rapid City Lagoon-information was sent to companies regarding alternatives to hiring contractors to dig out sludge in the lagoon and costs for alternatives were reviewed with Council. Manitoba Infrastructure is reviewing the land swap information. Road Closing-the survey for the road closing is to be received by end of January.

Hamiota Municipality indicated that they were in agreement with the Boundary Road Agreement. An inquiry from a neighbouring ratepayer regarding culverts in the boundary road was brought to the attention of

Council.

Council accepted the proposed budget for the Rapid City Regional Library with the levy remaining at $22,818.58 for 2019 and authorize the C.A.O. to pay the 2019 levy in two instalments. Council agreed to donate $1,000 to the STARS Foundation for 2019. Resignation of Oak River Fire Chief/ town foreman-a public works employee position is to be advertised for as soon as possible.

Mid-West Planning-a draft zoning by-law to be informally circulated. A proposal to subdivide PT. SE 34-13-19W (R. & L. Sharpe) was aproved.

An HMC Management Inc. proposal for operation review was approved

Tearfund Canada partnering with the Canada Food Grains Bank

Local farmers feed the world, but through two loca l projects, t hey’re also directly helping feed those in developing countries. The Canadian Food Grains Bank is a partnership of Canadian churches and church based agencies working to end global hunger.

There are two Canada Food Grains Bank projects in the local area, Kernels of Hope and the Whitemud Grow ing Project. Ray Baloun, the driving force behind Kernels of Hope, started the Canada Food Grains meeting on Feb. 4 at Neepawa, with his now famous ugly sweater story.

It started out as a $2 Walmart purchase that Baloun actually liked, and of course, the price was right. The sweater has been banned from being worn by Baloun, who said Rivers farmer Larry Fast wanted him to never wear it again. Baloun said, “Ok, but it will cost you $100.”

Fast put down $100 for the Food Grains Bank. The famous sweater has been circulated around many ag meetings and Food Grains meetings and with the federal government matching funds 3-1, the ugly sweater has generated $70,000. In the past 12 months, the local Food Grains Bank groups have

raised over $100,000 and with the federal matching, that means $400,000 has been raised.

At that meeting in Neepawa in early February, CGB supporters Wayne Johnson and Don Miller talked about the partnership of Canada Food Grains Bank and Tearfund. Tearfund is a Christian organization that works with communities around the world wherever there is the greatest need.

They began with their experiences in Ethiopia, where the people farm in much the same way they did 2,000 years ago.

The speakers emphasized that, “Tearfund mobilizes God’s church in the poorest places to unlock people’s God-given power and potential– creating f lourishing and resilient communities.”

Tearfund is teaching conservation agriculture, such as mulching and water conservation. The country is recovering from many years of socialism, where tillage was overly empha si zed a nd w it h conservation agriculture now being practised, yields are much better. The soil is mulched and the only tilling is to make a small hole for the seeds. Corn, beans and pumpkins are inter-cropped. Pumpkins can be stored for many months, providing food and product to sell at the

So much grain is now being produced on the little farms that they have to dig pits in the house and the church to store the grain for use or sale later in the year.

The group is also working with local people on a ban k ing system, by setting up Village Savings Groups, so they can understand how to save money. Groups of 20-30 people invest in a blue box with three keys held by three people. Deposits are accumulated and loans given out by consensus.

Borrowers pay 10 per cent per month. Money lenders charge much higher rates.

At year end, there is a share-out so people get a return on their investment.

Many churches in Ethiopia have chosen to see what they have, rather than concentrate on what they don’t have. By looking at what they have, they are then able to reach the community. The youth group is building homes for widows. The women’s

group is collecting clothes for orphans. The church, which is not rich, has made it a mission to help poor people, to reach out to their community.

Miller and Johnson also showed pictures of work in India, where Conservation Agriculture is being developed by g row ing rice during the monsoon (rainy) season and other crops in the dryer seasons.

They have also brought in superior stud goats, as the local goat herds’ milk and meat production had diminished over time. The new breeding stock, which is owned by the churches, is made available to all the community, regardless of the individual’s religion.

The pastors lead teaching sessions on intensified food production. Johnson and Miller said, “Churchbased community transformation is Tearfund’s passion and our calling, it empowers, it’s sustainable and through it, we can see communities permanently lifting themselves out of poverty.”

Felekech Teka, from Humbo district in Ethiopia, is a single mother of six, since she was widowed in 2002. In 2015, she was one of the first farmers in her province to sign up for conservation agriculture training from Tearfund. Now, she sells surplus crops to fund her daughter’s university education and has taught over 100 farmers and neighbours about conservation agriculture in the last year.

Beatles and Bugs

Sheila Runions Strathclair Drama Club The production team of Strathclair Drama Club affectionately refers to its principle characters as The Fab Four. The Beatles will not be performing on the Bend Theatre stage in Strathclair this April, but Dorothy, Lion, Tinman and Scarecrow are indeed a “Fab Four.”

The Wizard of Oz foursome will be joined by several supporting characters, as well as a chorus of jitterbugs, munchkins, monkeys, poppies, snowflakes, etc. This year’s cast numbers 49 people from the communities of Strathclair, Shoal Lake, Cardale, Rapid City, Minnedosa, Rivers, Brandon, Russell, Virden and Oak River.

Because Dorothy is in 26 of the 27 scenes in this two-act musical, Strathclair Drama Club decided to double cast the leading lady.

Ashton Lefave and Molly Prevost are both newcomers to the club and we are thrilled to have them join our 37th annual production.

Ashton was born and raised in Russell, where she has been involved with three different choirs and in eight

musicals. She also has eight years of dance experience in four different disciplines.

Because she loves The Wizard of Oz, and because she is on maternity leave, she knew she had the time required to commit to this role. And a commitment it is! Ashton makes a two-hour round trip twice a week to rehearse her role.

Molly lived in Birtle for eight years before she and her husband moved to Shoal Lake some 18 months ago.

She has spent six years in two different choirs and has 15 years of competitive figure skating on her resume.

She loves watching musicals, she loves to sing and although it was something of interest to her, the kindergarten teacher has never been involved with a drama.

When Molly became acquainted with drama veterans from the Shoal Lake area, she decided to audition in Strathclair.

Lion is played by Greg Kirk of Brandon. Greg was born and raised in Hamiota and was involved in Strathclair musicals from 1998-2000. He rejoined the club in 2008 and commuted from Portage la Prairie for the next eight years of musicals. Greg has since

retired and moved to Brandon; he is now enjoying his 15th year with Strathclair Drama Club.

Dan Voth of Strathclair first graced the Bend stage in 1993 and has been in 20 shows in the 26 years since.

One of those shows was The Wizard of Oz, when Strathclair first presented it in 1997. Since then, he has wanted to play the role of Tinman, so he considers himself fortunate to have this opportunity. This father of one pre-school child works for Parkwest School Division.

The final “Fab Four” is the role of Scarecrow, a.k.a. Eric Menzies of Shoal Lake. This father of two has nine cumulative years with the club, five consecutive.

When his job with Royal Bank offered him the opportunity to be manager in his home town, he once again joined Strathclair Drama Club; his first four years in Bend Theatre were during his high school years.

The Riverdale District Health Auxiliary continued moving forward with their many projects to improve healthcare in our community with the addition of four new examination tables for our three family physicians and nurse practitioner.

The project came to fruition by working with the Riverdale Health Services District Foundation, as well as the Rivers and Area Community Foundation, in funding the new tables. The new tables and new flooring in the physician and nurse practitioners office as well as the waiting room provide a much needed update. The tables were believed to be the original tables from when the hospital was built.

March 28, 1938 -February 19, 2019 Ed peacefully passed away with his wife of 47 years, Joan, by his side. He is survived by their children Tracey (John) and Bryan (Hilda). He leaves to mourn four grandchildren: Amanda, Ryan, Olivia, and Emme.

His sister Sarah Unger and brother John Giesbrecht along with several sisters and brothers -in-law, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ed was known for his quiet nature, dry sense of humour and straight-forwardness. He was a farmer at heart, with a passion for pig farming.

Ed loved baseball, curling and hunting. Upon his retirement from Tim-Br-Fab in 2007, he enjoyed the simple things in life - sitting under the tree during the day and sitting by the fire pit by night. He kept busy with cutting the grass on the riding lawn mower, doing puzzles, baking and gardening.

A special thanks to sister-in-law Lori Thomson for her support and care. Thank you to Dr. Menard, to all the nurses and all the staff on the 2nd Floor at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre. The care and compassion, that was demonstrated during Ed’s hospital stay, was exceptional.

No funeral will be held, per Ed’s wishes. A private Celebration of Life and interment will be held at a later date. Donations in Ed’s memory can be made to the Parkland Recreation Complex.

A crucial part of your health care team

There’s one in almost every community and you don’t need an appointment to see them, a crucial part of the health care team, pharmacists help make health care accessible to Manitobans.

Health care needs are changing and so too is the role that pharmacists play in helping patients get, and stay, healthy.

Kyle Skayman is the pharmacist and manager of the Hamiota Super Thrifty Pharmacy and is also the treasurer of Pharmacists Manitoba, the organization that represents the province’s pharmacists. As Pharmacy Month begins, he explains that pharmacists play an important role as part of an individual’s health care team.

While a physician is an expert on physiology, pharmacists are the point person for any questions about medication, he explains. Questions about dosages, effective rates, effectiveness, side effects and drug interactions all fall within the pharmacist’s area of expertise. They also help make sure a patient is getting the most from their medications, by checking for drug interactions and offering advice.

Skayman explains that pharmacists work with a patient’s doctor to help ensure they are prescribed the right medications to achieve the desired result. Pharmacists will consult and problem solve with physicians looking for advice about medications available to treat certain conditions. “We share the patients and we know the problems,” he said of the relationship pharmacists have with a patient’s other health care providers. These days, Skayman also says pharmacists are kept busy helping physicians find alternate medications in the face of shortages to treat conditions as varied as pain, blood pressure, anxiety and depression.

More than just dispensing Today, pharmacists are playing an expanded role in providing health care for Manitobans.

Skayman explained that pharmacists can now take additional courses and testing that allows them to provide some injection drugs, like flu and travel vaccines, and prescribe medication for self-self-limiting conditions, like acne, dermatitis or morning sickness during pregnancy. They can also purse additional training to prescribe smoking cessation drugs. Skayman explained that pharmacists with the enhanced skills must work within a scope of practice and recognize when a condition should be referred to a physician. Such expanded services for common, minor ailments are helpful for many patients, “It’s not always easy to get time off work or make an appointment [with a physician],” explained Skayman.

Answering questions Skayman said that a pharmacist’s role is to ensure patients are knowledgeable about the medication they taking. Once the prescription is filled, the patient will be provided with information sheets about their drugs, as well as a counselling session. “People have to be counselled, unless they decline,” said Skayman, adding, “Nobody should leave with questions.”

Located all across Manitoba, pharmacists are on the front lines of the province’s health care system. “People should know [pharmacies] are a place where they can get a lot of health care service done quickly, and without a lot of hassle. We’re accessible,” explained Skayman.

With the hockey season winding down, we just want to take time to recognize some of the contributions the Rivers/Elton Rage high school hockey team made to the community this season.

In November, the Rivers/Elton Rage were presented with a $1,000 funding contribution from the Rivers and Area Community Foundation. This amount was used to cover the cost of the materials and supplies required for the project to be completed. Any cost overages beyond the grant allocation were covered by the Rage hockey team. Once the locker units were fabricated at Rivers Collegiate, Mr. Mulaire and a group of Rage players hauled them to the rink. Scott Ramsay donated a day of his time and a large quantity of hooks, to install the locker stalls. Thankfully, school happened to be closed that day so there were a few extra hands available to anchor the units to the walls!

A metal sign will be fastened to the locker units to recognize all of the contributions from the various people involved in seeing the project through to completion.

The Rivers/Elton Rage intend to apply for another grant in future years to ensure locker systems can be completed in the three remaining rooms at the rink, plus the female change room.

There are four players from Rivers and two from Rapid City, one from Forrest on the Yellowhead Midget Chiefs team. There are also three boys from Rivers, one from Rapid City and one from Sioux Valley on the Yellowhead Bantam Chiefs team.

The Yellowhead Midget boys finished second in the Manitoba Midget AAA League and start playoffs on Friday night, in Shoal Lake, against the Pembina Valley Hawks.

The Yellowhead Bantam boys play in the Manitoba AAA Rural Provincials in Niverville this weekend.

The clubroom was in need of new chairs. The community gathered together to help with donations and sponsorships. The total cost for 100 chairs came in at $7,087.36. Just over $4,000 was raised from individual and family sponsorship of a chair. The Rivers and Area Foundation provided a grant of $1,000 and the local group, H.E.L.P., raised and donated just over $1,400. Art and Marilyn Halliday donated a plaque acknowledging the sponsors and was presented to the branch on February 22. Drop in to Legion to see the plaque and then sit awhile.
