Perception and reality

A

s a middle of the road Canadian, I look at the political landscape and I’m concerned. Mostly, I’m concerned about the growing divisiveness I see elsewhere in the world and its creep into Canadian politics.

Canadians consume a lot of culture from outside our borders and we’re inundated with the current political climate in both America and Britain. Things aren’t quite so bad here and I always thought it was a function of our three party system forcing parties to remember their centres. But I’m also seeing more memes, more instances where political opponents are being cast as a threat to democracy and less debate about actual policies. I can’t help but wonder, is it just that we’re slower to pick up on trends?

Whether it’s a case of perception or recognizing there’s a problem that needs to be solved, I came across a new study that gives me some hope. Last month, More in Common released a study called “The Perception Gap: How False Impressions are Pulling Americans Apart”. More in Common is an international initiative working to build societies and communities that are more resilient to the increasing threats of polarization and social division. It’s the third report in their Hidden Tribes Project, which seeks to better understand the forces driving the current climate of political polarization and tribalism in the United States. Yes, this is an American report, but their present could well be our future.

Kate Jackman-Atkinson crats think they disagree on issues, with how much they actually do. Participants were asked about the beliefs they thought their political opponents held and the major finding was that Americans don’t disagree on as much as they think they do. For example, Democrats imagine that only half (52 per cent) of Republicans think that properly controlled immigration can be good for America, while the vast majority (85 percent) actually do. Democrats estimate that about half of Republicans (51 per cent) would admit that racism is still a problem in America, when, in fact, it’s a view held by over three-quarters of Republicans (79 per cent). On the flip side, while Republicans think that only 48 per cent of Democrats disagree with the statement, “most police are bad people”, 85 per cent of them actually do. Republicans also estimate that just over half of Democrats (54 per cent) feel proud to be American, while 82 per cent of Democrats have a sense of national pride.

The study also looked at factors associated with a wider

perception gap and found it was widest among those most active in politics, the people who should be better informed.

The report found that those who post about politics on social media show a substantially larger perception gap than those who do not. But it’s not just engagement on social media, consumption of any form a media is associated with a wider perception gap.

Political beliefs exist on a spectrum and not surprisingly, the survey also found that the majority of respondents fall in the middle. This middle majority are characterized by being more ideologically flexible, support finding political compromise, are fatigued by current politics and feel forgotten in political debate. They’re leaving the debate to those at the edges.

What’s the solution? With two elections coming up, maybe the solution is to talk to candidates from other parties. Political affiliation isn’t a disease, you won’t catch it from talking to someone you would never vote for and with whom you disagree on policy. The more we can understand what other Canadians see as a better future for our country, the better we can build a future that works to improve the lives of all Canadians.

Addressing divisiveness is important because if left unchecked, we’ll end up with fragmented groups that can’t work together. We’ll end up unable to find common ground and without common ground, there will be no progress.

Standing behind words and actions

O

ne thing that the internet has done for us is to provide more information than we could ever process. One big problem is that much of the information we are offered is false or, at best, not always accurate.

It is tough to discern the truth, the facts, in amongst the mountains of stories we are offered. More and more, people are tuning out the flood of information, but along with that, is a subtle move back to local, generally reliable news, as it appears in local newspapers. The foundational truth is that, for the most part, local publishers don’t usually put false information into print. Once it’s printed on paper, it’s impossible to deny what has been written.

On the other hand, if it’s on the internet without permanent record, it can be denied and re-written. But more importantly, most internet sources are tough to track down. On the web, anybody can say anything, no matter how scandalous or outrageous, without the writer being identified or the “facts” being verified.

The newspaper industry, and especially the corporate newspaper part of the industry, is struggling with credibility and with profitability. It may well be that in order to have a newspaper, it has to contain news. It also needs ads and columns too, but it does need news. And it needs to be locally relevant and factual news. A person can throw anything they can dream up on a website and how do you know if it’s true or not? It can also be changed in an instant as well.

Ken Waddell Newspapers have a sense of permanency and reliability because, once it’s in print, you can’t take it back. Now that is accountability.

Most local newspapers understand their mandate, which is, to state the obvious, local news. It makes no sense for local papers, be they daily or weekly, to regurgitate what was on TV or the internet the day before. With all the news channels and web sites available, local papers should leave the national and international news alone, unless they are short of news for a given issue of the paper.

Right here in some of our own communities, we have newspapers that have let things get totally out of hand in the quest to build readership. The Brandon Sun allows un-signed comments every day in their “Sound-off section”.

I know exactly which publisher started that questionable practice and it has been going on for years, but it should be stopped. It’s dangerous, potentially libelous and allows people without courage to speak up.

The Brandon Sun and the Winnipeg Free Press also spend a lot of time and

money on their web editions, which by the way, lose a lot of money. The stories that get posted every day are good enough, as they are the exact same wording, basically, as the print editions and that is all well and good.

The problem comes in the dozens and sometimes hundreds of comments that get posted. Almost without fail, they are under an anonymous name. We have no idea who is commenting. On the odd occasion that I offer a comment, you can bet my name is attached to it. If you can’t or won’t attach your name to a comment, then maybe you shouldn’t be making it. For sure the newspapers need to step up and change this practice, as anonymous comments do nothing for public discussion.

Readers expect credibility and reliability in their newspapers. They deserve nothing less.

Name: Crystal Bourdin Birthday: May 28,1983 Occupation: Currently I am an EA at the Rivers elementary and high school. I also have my Early Childhood Education 2, most importantly mom to three- Sierra, Jesse and Nova.

First Job: My first job was purchasing and raising a few steers and heifers for the summer, they turned out quite well and made a profitable summer.

Hobbies: I enjoy volunteering in the community, quilting, gardening, fishing and just being around happy people.

In Rivers/Rapid City/Oak River since: moved to Rivers in 2008 Where do you live? Roughly three miles west of Rivers, on a little acreage.

Hometown: McAuley Where did you attend school? K-8 was in McAuley and then 9-12 was at Virden collegiate. Early childhood education2 program at ACC in Brandon Favourite or dream vacation spot: I think it would be one of those remote spots with a log cabin, spot to fish/ hunt, no technology, just a quiet spot to unwind and enjoy the nature around me. You know the ones they are always putting on face book live here for a $. Yep that be the spot!

Where am I?

here are countless train songs; Johnny Cash created a few memorable ones. May I reiterate, I am not a country music fan, someone that particular artist transcends any specific class of music, and, for 40 years, I shared my life with a gentleman who respected and emulated Cash. So I know my train songs!

And now I live a house away from the tracks. I appreciate hearing the sound of that lonesome whistle blowing (see what I did there?). The first night the dogs and I spent in our town home, they both became wide awake and vigilant at the sound of the midnight train. Heads thrown back, barking like fury, it took a moment to convince them that we were safe. Now none of us lift an eyebrow at the midnight rumblings and clangings.

Over the span of my 70 plus years, I have been able to travel by train several times. At the age of 16, I was chosen from the cousins to accompany my paternal grandmother as she travelled by train from Winnipeg to Langley, visiting her daughter in Abbotsford. It was high adventure. No sleeper car, an occasional foray to the viewing car, but grandma was more comfortable if I remained within sight. She hated travelling

A

s he looked back over his years living and working with others who were part of his religious order, the unknown friar wrote: “If I could live over again…I wouldn’t live so many days, weeks, or months in advance. I’d just have moments, one after another.”

His words contain much wisdom, because they reduce life to what it really is– just a series of moments, one after another which, when put together, become minutes, hours and days. How we use those moments is important, because once they pass, they are gone forever and we will never be able to go through them again.

Our family learned this the hard way when Kathryn had her stroke. One moment in time changed our lives forever. We desperately wanted her to get better and we knew she desperately wanted to get better. So every day as we sat with her in the hospital, we looked for little signs of recovery, little things that would give us hope for the future.

I will never forget sitting with her in the Intensive Care Unit at Health Sciences Centre on Christmas day 14 years ago, holding her hand and watching her sleep. Suddenly, she woke up, looked at me, smiled and squeezed my hand. That was my “moment in time.” It was all I needed to convince me that she would be fine.

The years since that Christmas have been filled with memorable moments. We still remember the first words

through the Rockies and would switch from side to side of the car, rather sitting close to the rock wall than a window seat that viewed the canyon beside us. I thought then, and now, if the train went off the tracks in the mountains, it would not matter which side of the car we sat on!

Years later, my first born was five, we again took the train from Winnipeg to Langley. I felt very sophisticated, travelling alone, a great distance, to visit cousins. Interestingly, it is easy to engage in deep conversations with strangers on a train ride– in the same enclosure, for a prolonged period of time, with zero chance of ever meeting again.

Fast forward to when the youngest was seven and accompanied us parents to Moncton. This time, we did have a sleeper car, making the long journey most enjoyable. Our child was safe, free to mingle with other travellers and soon found the company of three police officers from Montreal. 1987 had been a challenging year for officers in the city and these men were travelling to Moose Jaw, to have fun. The vastness of the Canadian Shield still impresses me.

Years later, many years later, my sisters and I rode the rail to Churchill. We drove to Thompson, caught the train in the evening, arriving in the morning. It was a wondrous, slow ride, swaying gently over the muskeg, stopping anywhere in the bush to drop someone off, or pick someone up. The summer days were long and there was little real night on that journey.

All of these holidays included a train ride back.

The memories for the return trips lack the lustre of the heading out. There is a lingering wonder at the concept of a train crossing our country and a wonder at the construction of tunnels and bridges. she spoke after her stroke, the first “A, B, Cs” she wrote with her right hand, the first steps she took and the day she was able to leave hospital and go home. Those moments were celebrated when they happened and many other moments have been celebrated since, because she’s still getting better.

As for me, I’ve had to learn a new way to live. In our house; we live one day at a time. My work hours are flexible. I go where I’m needed, when I’m needed. The same applies at home. I have to be ready to respond when Kathryn asks for my help, even if the help she needs takes only a few seconds of my time. This adjustment has not been easy and even after 14 years, I still find living this way to be quite challenging.

However, this adjustment has given me a new appreciation for the words Jesus spoke many years ago.

From the moment he began his public ministry, Jesus knew that he would only have 42 months (3.5 years) to complete the work his father had sent him to do. He had to make the best use of every day that he had. “I must work the works of him who sent me while it is day,” he said on one occasion. “Night is coming when no one can work.” ( John 9:4)The same is true of you and me.

None of us knows precisely how many days we have left on this earth. Only God knows that. He asks two things of us. First, that we receive each new day as a gift from him. Second, that we give our best effort to every task we are given and complete it as though we were doing it for him–because, in fact, we are.

St. Paul put it better than I ever could: “Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters; since you know that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; for you serve the Lord Christ.” (Colossians 3:23-24)

This is the third in a series of four articles that are all about apples! This article and the next will focus on different types of apples that you can grow on the prairies that will surpass those apples you purchase in the grocery store and are shipped from all over the world. However, how you decide what apple to grow is sometimes difficult! Think about what you wish your apple to do for you and that will help you decide which apple to grow for your use.

Last week we covered early season apples and some of the mid-season selections. Read on for more apples you can grow!

‘Brookland’ is a semidwarf, compact, round tree. Fruit is 5–6 cm in diameter, with greenish undercolour and light red overcolour. It matures in early September. The flesh is white, coarse, sweet and of good flavour. It is good for fresh eating and cooking. It is hardy to zone 2a and resistant to fire blight.

‘Carlos Queen’ produces 7–7.5cm apples that are pale green with a light blush of amber. It matures in early to mid-September.

Flesh is creamy white, crisp, slow to brown when cut, and of excellent flavour for fresh eating and cooking. Trees are semi-dwarf, round-headed to spreading with excellent branching habit.

‘Exeter’ has fruit that is slightly cone shaped 6 cm in diameter and creamy coloured undercolour with an over colour of bright red. It tends to yield very heavily. It is a fair quality for cooking and desserts, but makes excellent juice.

It does not store well. Matures in early September, and resistant to fire blight.

It is hardy to zone 2b.

‘Fall Red’ has an average diameter of 7–8 cm. Fruit is oblong-round in shape with good quality and texture.

Skin colour is yellow green with a dull red overlay.

Flesh is white, crisp, with moderate to high acid and good flavour. Fruit ripens by mid- late September and stores well. Trees are moderately vigorous and will bear fruit 6–7 years after budding. ‘Fall Red’

Apples – Part III

is moderately susceptible to fire blight but infected plants recover well. It is hardy to zone 2a.

‘Harcourt’ forms a small spreading tree with fruit of 5cm diameter. The fruit is round to cone shaped, washed with red and matures from late August to early September. Flesh is coarse, soft, mild with a pleasant f lavour. It is susceptible to fire blight and not fully hardy in unprotected spots in zone 3a and 2b.

‘McLean’ is 6 cm and round to cone shaped. It is yellow and mature in late August. Flesh is somewhat coarse, crisp and sweet. It is good for fresh eating, cooking and juice. It is a heavy yielding apple, and will require thinning to prevent over-bearing and biennial bearing. It is resistant to fire blight and hardy to zone 2a.

‘Norda’ produces 7 cm, round to cone shaped fruit with greenish-yellow under colour, striped with orangered overcolour. It matures in early September. Flesh is creamy coloured, crisp and moderately juicy. It is very good for fresh eating and cooking and stores for four months. It is hardy to zone 2a but trees are somewhat subject to sunscald.

‘Norson’ fruit is 5 cm, round with greenish-yellow undercolour and almost completely washed with dark red. The flesh is cream-coloured, crisp and juicy. It is good for fresh eating, cooking and will store for four months. The trees are moderately vigorous, upright and spreading, and hardy to 2b.

‘Parkland’ is a good quality medium-sized 6–7 cm apple suitable for fresh eating and cooking. Fruit shape is round oblate, symmetrically smooth; skin has greenish-yellow ground colour with 20– 40% washed overcolour.

F lesh is creamy-white tinged green, ripens in mid-August and stores for eight weeks. Trees are semi-vigorous with a tendency to bear biennially.

Fruit should be thinned to one apple per cluster to achieve maximum size, and avoid biennial bearing.

Trees are hardy to zone 2a and have good resistance to fire blight.

July 25, 1929 The annual fair held yesterday, was again a big success. The weather was ideal, if anything a little too hot and the attendance was somewhat in advance of the last year or two.

As to exhibits, there was a very large entry in horses, one of the biggest numbers for years and some of the finest stock seen here. Cattle entries were not so heavy, hogs were fair. Owing no doubt to the season, entires in vegetables, roots and sheaf grasses were very light.

The Gazette will publish a detailed list of winners in our next issue, but owing to our going to press we can only give a short report this week.

July 27, 1939 Line country elevators companies will operate a wheat pool under he legislation passed at the last session of parliament, it was officially announced today.

The pool will be in operation in time for the handling of the 1939 crop and efforts are being made to have the Canadian Wheat Board act as the selling agent for the pool. Line companies operate 3,500 country elevators throughout Western Canada.

July 23, 1959 The innocent looking thin plastic bag, a modern innovation which has been a boon to householders, food handlers and dry cleaning establishments, has already been responsible for close to fifty deaths by suffocation in North America alone.

While accidents from other sources still occur, the public is more aware of the obvious dangers from matches, sharp knives and poisons.

Officials of the provincial and City Health Department met in Winnipeg recently with representatives of the dry cleaning establishments and the plastic industry, to discuss the indiscriminate use of plastic bags and measure s to be taken to warn the public of its dangers.

The members of the plastic industry, along with health officials, are deeply concerned with the number of tragedies which have been attributed to the plastic bag and an extensive program in public education is currently under way.

The Roads and Drainage Committee reported on the progress of road gravelling. Reeve Fortune reported that a technician had met with him to discuss the level of Shoal Lake and indicated that more informat ion can be found on the R.M. of Yellowhead’s website. The Machiner y Committee indicated that the new grader should be here next week and the new packers in the middle of July.

Work to be completed at the Rapid City landfill and t ipping fees were discussed. The C.A.O. reported on the Blanshard CDC meeting she attended. Reeve Fortune reported on the meeting he attended with Penny Gilson regarding Prairie Mountain Health Care.

A public hearing was held on June 25, 2019 to hear representation for or against the proposed Conditional Use Application Order No. 06-O-19-CU, being made by Russell Redi Mix on behalf of John Thow to provide for the establishment of a gravel pit within the “Ag” A g r ic u lt u r a l G ener a l Zone. The application was approved on the condition that Russell Redi Mix enter into a gravel haul road use agreement to ensure roads used by the contractor are left as is or in better condition than they were before the project commenced.

A n appl icat ion wa s made by Grant and Terry Gill to request relief from the required front yard setback of 125 feet from the shed on site, to the northerly property lined to be varied to 65 feet to provide for the location of a 80 x 60 Ag shed to support agricultural activities was approved.

Gerald Bos: a concern with the costs of boring through roads for a water project was brought to the attention of Council.

A notice of motion was received under “Notice of Motion”.

Rapid City Lagoon and lift station-an Agreement for Purchase and Sale for Real Estate Services was reviewed.

A g reement for P urchase and Sale of land was drafted and reviewed between Real Estate Services Division and the R.M. of Oakview whereby R.M. of Oakview exchanges RM land(Blocks 56 and 57; Plan 17 NLTO in NW ¼ 20-13-19 WPM and undeveloped road allowances between Blocks 56 and 57 and directly sough of Blk. 56 and 57 Plan 17 NLTO)) to the Province in exchange for Provincial Lands (Pt Plan 5331 NLTO(to be closed) in W ½ 20-13-19 WPM, excepting all Mines and Minerals and other matters as set forth in the Crown Land Act. Safety concerns have been expressed due to people fishing off the new dock at the Rapid City beach and Council agreed that a sign be placed indicating “No Fishing off the Rapid City Beach Dock.”

High speed internet-a date for an open house in Oak River is to being scheduled. Councillor Hyndman indicated that Westman Communications Inc. indicated that they will be putting services into the LUD of Rapid City.

The Rapid City Fire Department will cover 24 sections of land in the R. M. of Elton from Road 106W to Road 114W and from Road 69N to Road 72N with the understanding that the R.M. of Riverdale will cover from Road 106W to 114W from Road 66N to Road 69N. The 2019 Harding Fair was its usual resounding success with good attendance and fun for all, Pictured here are some very creative entries from the costume class.
