With the end of sum mer comes the return to fall activities. Rivers United Church is ex cited to announce that it has secured the ap pointment of a halftime student minister, begin ning on September 1st. Sheila Deforest, who hails from Saskatchewan, is a mature student at St. Andrew’s College in Saskatoon with plans to graduate as an Ordained Minister in the United Church of Canada in the spring of 2024. When Sheila introduced herself to the Rivers United con gregation, she wrote, “I am sister, friend, mother, aunt, grandmother, class mate. I treasure and value all these, but most important of all and what defines me more than anything is my relation ship with God.” Sheila brings many gifts to our church. She is enthusias tic and passionate about the church and her work in it. She likes to tell stor ies and to try new things. She has a good sense of humour, and she enjoys everything about worship leadership. As a rural person, she has experi ence in the reality and practicalities of a small church. Sheila is eager to be part of the church family and the commun ity where she will work, study, and live. Her hob bies include needlework (including hardanger and cross stitch), sewing, reading, and gardening.

If you eat seasonally, now is the ideal time to defrost your freezer in preparation for your garden harvest, hunting success, and/ or culling of livestock this fall. Unless you have enough space for several freezers in your home, your freezer is prime real estate. You may have to make difficult decisions as to what to keep in your freezer, and what doesn’t make the cut. Meat may take prior ity over veggies, which may take priority over bread. You may decide to can certain foods instead of (or in addition to) freezing. As you use the contents of your freezer, you may use your frozen meat and vege tables to make double batches of suppers, freezing half, so that ready-made meals gradually start replacing the individual ingredients. By spring, you’ll have a freezer full of pre-made meals you can just throw in the oven, which will be convenient during that busy time of year. The future you will thank you. If you’re feeling ultra-ambitious, or are naturally organized, you can create a spreadsheet/itemized list of the contents of your freezer, with boxes beside each item that can be checked off as the items are used up, so there’s no rummaging through the freezer, leaning over with your head near the bottom, thinking “I thought I had one more pack of chops”. There is debate over whether or not to use glass to store food in the freezer. If you do, only fill the glass jars or baking dishes ¾ of the way full, to allow for expansion as the food freezes. The last thing you need in your deep freeze is broken glass. You also need to be very careful with glass in the freezer, when rooting through trying to find things at the bottom of the freezer, that you don’t accidentally smash any glass containers. It is convenient to freeze ready-made meals in bakeware (glass or disposable) that can go straight from freezer to oven. Using freezer paper (butcher’s paper with wax on one side) or vacuum-sealed bags will cut down on freezer burn. With inflation these days, a well-organ ized freezer means you can take advantage of sales and stock up, saving yourself money. Be sure to check up on your freezer, mak ing sure the “power on” light is indeed on. I have heard horror stories of losing an entire freezer of deer sausage because the breaker to the garage blew and it took a few days to notice.

The canoe at Rivers Elementary School was adequately filled. Plosker Rivers Banner

As reported in the March 9 edition, the Grade 12 Interdisci plinary Studies in Science class at Rivers Collegiate planned a project for Riverdale Harvest. Dubbed the Boat Load of Food, students secured a canoe from Rolling River School Division with an intent to fill it with non-perishables. Although the campaign was fully organized by that class, the original idea came from a suggestion made by harvest volunteer Liliane Dupuis.“Iheard the idea at a meet ing in Brandon. St. Augustine School had tried Fill a Canoe in conjunction with the 10-day Festival du Voyaguer in Win nipeg in February. It was very successful and whenever I hear food bank, my ears always perk up!”She then brought the sug gestion to Riverdale Harvest, which supported the idea and asked her to present the promo tion to the schools. Pupils co-ordinated the entire month-long promotion, which culminated in a ceremonious presentation on March 20 to Riverdale Harvest president Heather Gray and Liliane. Because the snow had melted so much, the canoe could not be portaged across the street to Zion Church (home of River dale Harvest). Rather, the teens carried bags, boxes and garbage

Lesson One: “Public schools teach you the basic skills you need to succeed in life. Those skills are: being able to read and understand what you read; being able to write so that others can understand what you’ve written; and being able to do basic mathematical calculations in your head without using a computer or desktop calculator.”

We learn these basic skills in the same way we learn the basic truths of Scripture– line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little until hopefully, by the time we graduate from Grade 12, we have mastered them. Along the way, we will face significant challenges. Here are just a few of them.

The CBC has enough problems of their

For example, when learning to read, we first learn the sounds made by each letter of the alphabet. Then, we learn how to put those sounds together so we can pronounce the words we see on a printed page or computer screen. That’s the easy part. To read with understanding, we must know what each word means and how, when used together in a sentence, a sequence of words can convey a message to you andLearningme. to write isn’t as easy as it looks. We begin by learning how to form letters by hand–first printing them and then joining them together (handwriting). Learning to do this neatly takes time and lots of practice. Then we learn to choose words that, when used in a sentence, convey a message we want others to hear. We must also learn to spell the words correctly and use proper grammar. Spell checkers, grammar checkers and predictive text are nice tools to have on a computer or smart phone, but don’t rely on them. They are good at choosing the wrong word at the wrong time, and causing untold chaos when an inappropriate message reaches the one to whom you sent it. I learned my math skills the hard way. I was taught to do the basic procedures (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) in my head. I still use those skills today and can, even at my age, do some calculations faster in my head than I can using a calculator. (PS– I do check my work with a calculator just to be sure my brain is still working correctly.)

I had a very personal incident to prove the point. Many years ago, I sat in on a session on editorial writing. The journalism school professor didn’t know I was in the room and he went on at length, scathing an editorial I had written which was admittedly in favour of the Reform Party. The prof torched my view and that’s fair. But after the session, I walked alongside him and commented that he didn’t have much time for the Reform Party. He indignantly said, “Well, they have an agenda of their own.” To which I replied, “Isn’t that the purpose of a political party?” He stomped off. It was fine for him to disagree with me, or the Reform Party, but he missed the whole point of political discussion and debate and that is political parties have an Maybeagenda.moreto the point, the Liberal Party aren’t really clear in their agenda, it’s vague and tends to get hidden in the fog. That’s why the Liberal party has been so successful, they are able to be all things to all people without actually standing for anything. The CBC has been their working and willing partner for decades and it needs to end. Let the CBC go, the good executives, show producers, newscasters and sports reporters will rise to the top in the industry. The rest will find other work, but at least Canadians will save $1.3 billion a year and have a more fair and open discourse. Disclaimer: The views expressed in this column are the writer’s personal views and are not to be taken as being the view of the Banner staff.

T

I f Pierre Poilievre wins the leadership race for the Conservative Party of Canada, he promises he will make major changes at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It’s long overdue. Canadians pump $1.3 billion per year into the CBC. In addition, CBC sells a lot of ads and good for them. However, that $1.3 billion in taxpayer subsidy goes a long way towards subsidizing their ad prices, therefore putting them at a great and unfair advantage over CTV and other networks and over radio and TV stations. Westman’s radio stations were just sold to the Pattison Group and I am sure they would happy to not have to go up against subsidized ad rates offered by CBC. Another area of subsidization and unfairness comes in CBC’s webbased ads, as well. The $1.3 billion in savings per year would be much better spent providing clean and sustainable drinking water into every community in Canada and increasing the pace at which high speed internet can be added to remote and rural communities. The CBC was established many decades ago when it was a needed source of information in the then-absence of TV, any other national radio network and long before the internet. It has outlived its mandate and purpose, long ago ousted in purpose by many other media outlets. It’s time for it to be sold for salvage value. In other words, cut the losses and the chokehold it has on public discourse. So what should happen to the CBC? It should be simply sold on the open market. Unfortunately, the taxpayers might be lucky to get one year’s subsidy back. I have no idea what the CBC might be worth, but quite frankly, their programming is pretty much uninteresting to me and many other millions of Canadians.

My disdain for the CBC goes back to my childhood, as the only good programming I can recall from CBC was Hockey Night in Canada. Most of the CBC shows are very much out of touch with mainstream Canada. The last really good radio interviewer they had was Peter Gzowski. Well, there was Jian Ghomeshi, but in spite of his interviewing ability, his off-beat personal life ran him into the ditch.

RiveRs

The biggest problem for the CBC is that they are basically pawns of the Liberal Party of Canada. There has been a very snug relationship for decades and it shows. The CBC has worked hard to make sure that little criticism is levelled at the Liberals, while truckloads of scorn are heaped on any other view, especially if it is conservative or Christian.

Twelve MVLs, part one

his coming Tuesday, the doors of Manitoba public schools will open as teachers and staff welcome students for another academic year.

I am quite certain that this day will be greeted with mixed feelings. Most parents will be happy to see a new school year begin. “At least,” some will argue, “we will know where our kids are for most of the day.” Their children may not share the same views. A few are eagerly looking forward to seeing old friends and making some new ones. Others want to get as far away from school as they can for as long as they can. Occasionally, some may take unauthorized time away from class and have to face the consequences of that choice the next day. I have very few memories of my public school years. But I do recall the life lessons I learned. Beginning this week, I will share the 12 Most Valuable Lessons (MVLs) that I learned from September 1957 through June 1969 (my years in public school).

This is a skill that, in my humble opinion, every student should learn. Public school teaches you the basics. Learned well, they will give you a solid foundation for future success, no matter what your career choice may be.

I pray that I will have enough strength and energy. Today was a good and blessed day. Again, I learned to just live one day at a time and know that, “God is our refuge and strength , a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 146:1)

Observation

Helping our community grow!

imes have changed. Seeing pictures on social media of cousins getting together makes me realise how much times have changed! There were no elaborate gatherings when I was a kid (and we used the term kid…). My grandmothers were wise enough to host at least two grands at a time. We could never say we were bored or there was nothing to do. Their large gardens always offered an alternative. We didn’t bother the grandmas either, at this stage of their lives, both sets of grandparents had live-in help. We went to Nettie or Ann for any of our childhood wants and needs. I got to spend copious time with my male cousins, at my home. At this stage, my parents were farmers, and dad’s brothers and sisters were teachers, so it made sense that the lads would spend the summer with Uncle Walt and Aunt Rose. Not having any brothers, I was elated to share the work load, and the fun Cousintimes.Bwas a hoot. There was the summer of the milk drinking contests. Taking into consideration that the milk was the produce of the farm– from milking, to separating, to consuming– there was no limitations on the amount we drank. And in the time we drank it. For a dare, B challenged us to drink down a little green worm. We passed, but returned the dare. No problem, insert little green worm, take a chug of milk, get the giggles and snort out the little green worm, through a nostril! High hilarity all around. It was this same cousin that came up with the idea that we use a four letter word– NOT today’s four letter words!– and with the wonderful rotary dial phone ring up some random person. Using an accent and an unusual name elicited much laughter from the audience. The fun went out of it when he got a person with the same accent, and a name that was very close to the fictitious one that the fun went out of the game. Years later, many years later, for B’s children were young adults, I was sharing these memories with them. They were incredulous. There had been no high-jinks at the table, and the phone was for business reasons only. What a pity, so much fun lost! With good reason… The other cousin whose parents were also in the teaching profession was G. He came regularly, all his life. He was as close to a brother as I got, aside from the Wiebe boys across the field. There were some summers that G brought a friend, again lightening the work load and adding to amusement. There was the day we were hauling straw bales, and on a whim, we stacked it as high and carefully as we could. It was significant. When dad got home from summer school, we admired our work and he instructed us to take the load over to the neighbours. Yikes! Well it looked good and it was a fair share. Not everything has changed. As grandparents, Ed and I were able to enjoy wonderful holidays with our extended family. They were times we all remember.

A lion tattoo done by Trish in the new tattoo shop in the building that was previously Angies Hair Salon.

Men generally choose places like arms and legs while sternum and behind the ear tattoos have been popular with women. Most people will end up getting more than just one tattoo.

Reporter’s note: I’ve received numerous questions from read ers over the past months asking what’s happening at the former Angie’s Hair Salon in Rivers, and that there’s tattooing going on and I should investigate. There’s actually two tattoo artists working out of Angie’s, but both have kept things smallscale and didn’t want to open the floodgates with a news article/ interview until now. Hope this article quells the rumour mill! In October 2021, Peter Clincke bought the former Angie’s Hair Salon in Riv ers (680 2nd Ave, although it faces Quebec Street). He is a self-taught tattoo artist and has been tattooing parttime for the past four years. He turned Angie’s hair salon into the Nail Room, a tattoo shop which includes Clincke Tattoos and Riv ers Edge, and there’s one free space not yet occupied which he hopes to fill with a business of the same salon genre. He lives in the other half of the building with his wife Stacy and their little girl Mackenna, who will be starting grade one in Rivers next week. He also has four children from a previous marriage, with the oldest two already married. Neither Peter nor Stacy are originally from Rivers but they moved here wanting to be part of a small com munity and Rivers was the r ight fit for them. Peter says he’s always loved tattoos. He’s got his first tattoo at age 18 and hasn’t looked back. He’s always enjoyed art but never found a proper outlet for it until tattooing. He got into construction when he was younger and is still work ing in construction, with a f irm based out of Brandon, although he hopes to tattoo full-time in the long-term. In late 2021, Trish Freee man decided to take up d rawing as a hobby as a way to feel connected to her brother who passed 15 years ago. Trish describes him as an amazing artist who dreamed of becom ing a tattoo artist. Trish had previously stayed away from art as that was her brother’s passion, but she quickly realized it comes very naturally to her as well. She decided to buy herself a tattoo kit off Amazon as a Christmas present to herself so that she could tat too as a hobby. She did an i ntense amount of research and spent many hours on YouTube learning how to tattoo.“My husband and I love tattoos so I thought it would be cool to just do them for ourselves to save some money” Trish said. “Once I received my kit, tattooing in stantly became my passion”. She practiced on fake skins (yes, that’s a thing!), then on herself and her husband. Friends and family quickly began asking for tattoos which helped her gain confi dence and knowledge. Word of mouth travelled fast, and she soon had members of the community requesting her“Peterservices.invited me to use the shop to help me learn faster with the help of his many supplies and his assist ance when needed,” Trish explains. “He’s a great men tor and tattoo buddy”. Peter h as welcomed Trish into the tattoo artist world, but because they’re both selftaught, she can’t do a formal apprenticeship under him, which is how most tattoo artists enter the career.

Trish bought her Christ mas present with a 5-year plan in mind: she was a stay-at-home mom during the day while also provid ing childcare for a couple of friends, and working at the local Co-op grocery store evenings and weekends. She wanted to realize her dreams while providing for her family, so began tattoo ing in her spare time. After a few months of trying to balance her household, jobs, and potential career, she made the decision to put her all into tattooing. This hard-working mamma is now a self-taught tattoo artist, tattooing as a fulltime career through the summer, honing her skills and receiv ing lots of positive feedback. “Having gone to school for business administration, I knew I wanted to run my own business one day but I just needed to find my passion”, she said. “With tattooing, something just clicks”. She loves being able to spend more time with her four children, aged 2, 5, 9, and 14, working less while making more money. Her plan from here is to continue to grow. She’s currently taking an online course for micro blading, ombré brows, and lip blushing, which she hopes to offer to clientele by the end of the year. Next will be a course on saline removal which is an alternative tattoo re moval method rather than laser removal. Then the next goal will be taking a course in Toronto to do piercings which would include every bodyTrishpart.was born and raised in Thompson Manitoba and made the decision to move to Rivers due to the high crime rate in Thompson. Trish started Rivers Edge officially in July 2022 and has had great response from the community. Although she hasn’t done much adver tising, she’s still booking 3-4 weeks ahead. She already has many returning clients. Her artwork is incredible. She’s very knowledgeable of trends in the tattoo industry; with the trend of Chinese characters for “love” and “happiness” having long gone, the latest trend is min imalist, line tattoos. While she doesn’t have a preferred style, she’s always up for a good challenge.

Tattooing in Rivers at Angie’s hair salon her husband wanted to raise their children in a familyfriendly place. Everything has gone smoothly: the community has been so welcoming and friend ly, her husband, Mark, quickly got a job with the Riverdale municipality, their kids quickly made friends, and now with her career quickly blossoming, she says it was the best deci sion they made as a family w ithout a doubt. With tattoos and pier cings becoming more accepted and less taboo, there is no worry about a lack of clientele. Trish has had clients ranging from 16 years old (with parents’ consent) to 78 years old, with it being pretty equal between men and women.

Trish’s “Flash Fridays” offer walk-in customers smaller, pre-made tattoos for only $50, and themed ones for $40 based on the month (Halloween in October). This reporter never thought of tattoos as a walk-in, spur-of-the-mo ment type of thing, but it’s proving to be quite popular, especially for those wanting to get their feet wet in the world of tattooing before going full-sleeve. How many drops of water can you rest on one coin?

What’s happening?

The surface of the water curves because the top layer of the water acts like an invisible skin over the water, which keeps the water from flowing over the edge of the coin. This “skin” ef fect is caused by surface te nsion. Water molecules have a negative end and a positive end. As a re sult, they are attracted t o each other–they tend to “stick together”. This attractive force between like molecules (molecules of the same substance) is known as cohesion. What to do: 1.With the coin laying flat on a flat surface, use the dropper to carefully drop as many drops of water as possible on the coin.2.Record the number of drops you can place on the coin before the water flows over the edge. 3.When the water flows over the edge, dry off the coin and start again! 4.Observe and de scribe the shape the water t akes as you continue to add drops up to the point where it flows over the edge.5.Repeat this at least three times and then calculate the average number of drops you recorded.

Why does it matter? Soaps and detergents interfere with the co hesive forces between w ater molecules, re ducing overall surface t ension when they are mixed with water. Pol lution of water with de tergents and household cleaners can significantly affect the survival of animals, insects, and plants that rely on sur face tension to live. For e xample, plants absorb water by exploiting the surface tension of water. Some insects, like water striders, rely on the sur face tension of water for l ocomotion. Keep learning

The love of learning is so important as a character trait; it really allows the person to keep growing and increasing their knowledge throughout their life. Knowing a little about a lot of things helps inform your day-to-day life, helps you interact and find common interests with others, and allows you the ability to think for yourself rather than being told how to think. My toddler has enjoyed this book so much, it’s fallen apart completely. Luckily I read it so many times that I have it memorized! In a world full of vacuous toddler books with no message/theme, or that showcase the main characters doing bad things (like get ting away with eating extra cookies or not doing their chores), this book is an absolute gem. In fact, it’s better than a lot of books, period; no need for the “toddler” qualifier in the previous sentence! Unfortunately, it’s not available at the Prairie Crocus library or through interlibrary loan, but several online retailers sell it.

Growing up strong Eat fruits and vegetables: Garbage in, garbage out, as they say. If you fill your body with nutritious foods, you’ll reap the rewards. High amounts of vitamins and minerals helps to maintain good health. Much of modern medicine these days is reactionary, meaning you go to the doctor, describe your symptoms, and typically they just write you a prescrip tion. Instead of throwing pills at the problem, get to the root of the problem before it even becomes a problem. This type of approach is called preventative medicine, and it starts with a good diet. Did you know that most cinnamon sold at grocery stores is fake? Yes, fake cinnamon. What has the world come to? Cinnamon is the inner bark of a particular type of tree. True cinnamon, called “Ceylon” cinnamon (it has two scientific names: Cinnamomum zey lanicum or Cinnamomum verum) has a m ore refined, subtle fragrance than the fake cinnamon, known as “Cassia” cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon comes from tree native to Sri Lanka; the country was formerly called Ceylon. It’s lighter in color and tastes sweeter than its Cassiaimitation.cinnamon is a catch-all term for four species of cinnamon: Indones ian cinnamon (Padang cassia), Chinese c innamon (Chinese cassia), Saigon cinnamon (Vietnamese cassia), and Malabar cinnamon. It’s reported that in 2018, Indonesia produced nearly 40% of the world’s supply of cinnamon, and China produced 30%, so those two types of cassia cinnamon dominate the market.Besides the major flavour differ ences, cassia cinnamon contains more c oumarin, a natural compound that is flavourful but toxic in high doses. While considered safe in small quantities, more than 1 tsp per day is considered carcinogenic and can cause liver dam age. The toxicity of high doses of fake c innamon was showcased several years ago with a social media “cinnamon challenge” where challengers would film themselves eating large spoon fuls of cinnamon, which posed serious h ealthWithdangers.coffeeshops and grocery stores coming out with all things “pumpkin spice” with the coming of fall, it’s good to know the differences when it comes to cinnamon. If you’re doing any baking at home, consider buying the authentic cinnamon from a gourmet line, rather than its imposter cousin.

In this week’s “recipes with a story” column, our featured recipe is courtesy of Nicole Empey, a canteen worker at the Manitoba Sheep Association’s show and sale that took place in Minnedosa Aug. 19-20. The pulled lamb on a bun they were serving up at the event was so good, I had to ask for the recipe. Without batting an eye, Nicole sent me the recipe from her phone. I got the impression I wasn’t the only one who asked her for her recipe! There’s a good number of farmers raising lamb in the Banner coverage area, so I’m sure lots of readers can find some high-quality, local lamb to use and the recipe is sure to become a favourite. It looks a little intimidating with all the ingredients, but it’s mostly a “throw it in the oven and forget about it" type of recipe. The sauce is barbecuemeets-curry; essentially a BBQ sauce with a mild curry flavour. I made “friendly edits” to the instructions after I made it for myself last week. If you have a recipe (and a story) you would like to be featured, please email me at sarah.plosker@gmail.com Lamb lamb shoulder tablespoons dark brown sugar tablespoon salt teaspoons garam masala 1/2 teaspoons paprika 1/2 teaspoons ground turmeric teaspoon ground ginger teaspoon onion powder teaspoon garlic powder teaspoon ground cumin cayenne pepper cup ketchup
