Dubbed the Boat Load of Food, students secured a canoe from Rolling River School Division with an intent to fill it with non-perishables. Although the campaign was fully organized by that class, the original idea came from a suggestion made by harvest volunteer Liliane Dupuis.“Iheard the idea at a meet ing in Brandon. St. Augustine School had tried Fill a Canoe in conjunction with the 10-day Festival du Voyaguer in Win nipeg in February. It was very successful and whenever I hear food bank, my ears always perk up!”She then brought the sug gestion to Riverdale Harvest, which supported the idea and asked her to present the promo

Although it is a provincial, not fed eral, area, why do governments register m arriages? I can see that church or faith based organization might want to record marriages but why does government have to do that. Why do governments license marriage com missioners, priests and minsters? Any t wo people who wish to form a legal marriage can do so simply by living as a couple for six months. I am not hard set on the government registering mar riages issue but it seems like a waste of g overnment time and resources.
Now-if they had given out grades for slinging bales, forking manure from smelly hog pens and cattle gut ters, milking cows, shoveling grain, picking rocks, f ixing fences or hauling grain from the combine in a 1947 2-ton Mercury farm truck, I would have been given perfect scores. By the time I reached Grade 7, I could do those things quite well.

During our years in public school, we learn to work with others as a team. We use our strengths to compensate for the weaknesses of others; and we allow others to use their strengths to compensate for our weaknesses. We learn to lead in the areas where we are strong, and to follow the lead of others in the areas where we are weak. By working together and looking out for each other, we are able to accomplish far more as a team than any one of us could ever hope to accomplish on our own.
This experience, along with many others just like it, taught me the third Most Valuable Lesson I learned during my years in public school: “No one of us can be all things to all people; and no one of us can do everything. Each of us has great personal strengths. Each of us also has glaring personal weaknesses.”

Spoiler alert-my grades in PE were not all that impressive.OurPEteacher focused on the basics. Every class started with calisthenics-15 minutes of them. From then on, we were introduced to such wonderful skills as rope climbing, tumbling, vaulting, working on parallel bars and standing on our heads. In the spring and fall, we enjoyed outdoor sports. In the winter, we tried to develop skills in volleyball and basketball. Everything we did (or didn’t do) contributed to our finalMygrade.PEgrade was not that great. In rope climb ing, I made it to the ceiling of the gym and back to t he ground safely. I completed the challenge on the parallel bars. My time for the 100 yard dash was in the bottom 10 per cent. Standing on my head? That happened once, which was not a surprise. I have a hard enough time standing on my feet. Of the five shots we needed to complete to get a perfect score in Basketball skills, I got one. And in tumbling, I landed on my head and pulled some muscles in my neck. Fortunately, the blow was cushioned by a 4-inch

Why can we not fix food inspection regulations so we can export food from province to province? Some would even argue why we need two levels in Agricultural departments but perhaps that’s a step too far.
I have been pondering some areas where we perhaps need to ask why governments do what they do.

returned to high school and then on to university as an adult. He attended the same school as my sisters and I did. He was encouraged by the acting principle to get his final subject for graduation requirements, so he came to school for his classes only. After that it was one year full time university, teaching pos itions and continuing education in summer school a nd evening classes. Dad was a veracious reader; history, poetry, world news and some westerns. Always learning, always open to ideas, not always embracing them. I like to think that his example for life learning is a legacy I embrace. The last course I completed coincided with my seventieth birthday. The faith lessons that I learned from my dad are the ones that sustain me daily. These too, were taught with words and deeds. He was a lay preacher, a Sunday school teacher, a deacon and a wise man. With his ability to speak publicly with ease, with his store of life lessons and his depth of knowledge and understanding of the scriptures, dad needed very little prep time to offer insightful and encouraging reflections. For much of my life I was reluctant to be comfortable with illness or death. I didn’t like the smell of the hospital, I didn’t like to think of the loss of a loved one. Dad took a very long time to die – the long good bye -. The disease that robbed him of his mobility also robbed him of his memory and aware ness. As my family and I sat with him, he showed m e that death is simply stepping through a portal, a passing through that valley of the shadow of death. This lesson has had the most lasting effect on me, and my life choices. Sharing this portion of his life journey has dispelled my fears. Thanks, again, dad.
aving extra time to sit and think, my thoughts went back to some of the very basic lessons that my dad taught, instilled, enforced in me. Some are farm lessons, some life lessons and some faith lessons. Most of them serve me well.

Not having brothers, I was the outside daughter. Thankfully! I learned how to roll down the lip of a gunny sack to facilitate the movement of grain or chop from pile to sack. It was such a simple thing and made the task easier and tidier. This led to learning how to quick tie the filled bag, with the knot that could be released with one tug. As my abilities in creased I was the one wielding the shovel and there w as a skill to that as well. Filling the gunny sacks was short regular dig, lift and deposit movements. Using the shovel or pitch fork for moving manure required a slightly different set of movements. Dig, lift, and throw, with a particular upward thrust that sent the manure soaring to land on the pile or stone boat. I don’t use these skills often these days, but have not forgotten any of them!

Controversy in the Canadian canning com munity! With prices of g oods steadily increasing year after year, many are turning to gardening and canning as a way to save money and get back to their roots. Gem canning jars have been popular in Western Canada since the 1930’s; their mouth size (opening) of 78 mm is the Goldilocks’ happy medium—right between the 70 mm standard size and the 85 mm wide mouthDominionsize.

Oak is extremely soughtafter, weighing 3,800 pounds per cord and produ cing an average 27 million BTUs per cord. If you can find it, and afford it, oak is a favourite to use on cold winter nights so you don’t have to get up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire.
It’s useful to mix up the wood species you use: start your fire with birch bark, get a nice quick fire going with pine, then throw a

Burning green (un seasoned, freshly cut) wood will result in lots of creosote to clean out of your unit; creosote is also dangerous as an excessive buildup can result in a chimney fire. If you do need to burn green wood, go for ash, as it has a naturally low moisture con

piece of ash or oak in to keep things going for a while. If it starts to cool off, add some tamarack. When asking around about what’s the best wood to burn, don’t be surprised if you get the smart-aleck answer “dry wood”. That is, of course, very true. Wood should be cut and split in early spring, allowing it to dry through the summer months and early fall, until it reaches 15 per cent or less moisture. This may take several seasons, depending on the wood. If unsure, bang two pieces of wood together; the sound they make should sound hollow if they are well-seasoned. If it sounds more like a thud, the wood needs to dry longer.
Shift Times (subject to change)
The most popular hard woods to burn in the area are ash, birch, oak, and pop lar. Ash weighs an average of 3,200 pounds per cord and has an average BTU output of 20-24 million BTUs per cord. These are impressive numbers, mak ing ash popular, especially to keep the wood stove or boiler going all night long or if you’re out for the day.

Many people living out of town heat their homes using wood. Not all wood is created equal, and knowing which species burn hotter can help save you money thisFirst, winter.wood is classi fied into either softwood or hardwood. Typically softwood trees are faster growing and less dense than hardwood, but that’s not always the case. It turns out that the real differ ence between these types of wood is that hardwood trees are deciduous (they have leaves) while softwood trees are coniferous (they have needles). Another way to make the distinction is that hardwoods are angio sperms, which are flowering plants where the mature seed is surrounded by an ovule (usually a fruit, like apples) whereas softwoods are gymnosperms: they have “naked” seeds. Poplar weights 2,100 pounds per cord and has a heat output of 15 million BTUs. While those num bers aren’t as impressive when compared to other hardwoods on the list, it is rather abundant in West man, to say the least, so is generally cheaper per cord and easier to find. You may have lots of poplar on your property, which means it’s free heat. It’s also got a great scent and flame, making it a pleasure to watch burn, either in an outdoor firepit or in a fireplace with a glass window. Just be sure you’re using white poplar; black poplar is poor quality.

Birch weighs on average slightly less than Ash (just under 3,000 pounds per cord) and produces roughly the same BTUs: 21 million BTUs per cord. What most people use birch for is the bark, which contains an oil that makes it extremely flammable, making it great for starting fires. If you have an indoor wood fireplace with a glass window, this is the wood for you. It produ ces a nice flame and doesn’t turn to coal quickly the way ash or oak does, so pull up your chair, put your feet up, and watch the wood burn.
tent, about 30 per cent. Of course, burning green wood also has the disadvantage of lower BTUs, meaning less bang for your buck. Rotting wood will not burn hot or long, so be sure to inspect yourBuywood.local to help prevent the spread of tree disease and pests. With sellers offer ing a wide range of pricing, keep the above weights and BTUs in mind when price shopping, and you won’t get taken advantage of. There are still some great deals to be had, depending on how much you want to work for it—8 ft logs are cheaper than pre-cut, and you can save on delivery fees by picking up yourself. If you load and unload your truck, that will also save you some hard-earned cash. That being said, sometimes it’s worth paying extra to avoid the backpain. You may balk at the price of oak or ash, but you’ll thank yourself when it’s -30° and you don’t need to top up your exterior wood boiler as often.

weighs approximately 2,700 pounds per cord with heat output of 18 million BTUs. It’s a popular choice for firepits or fireplaces with a window, as it produces a nice scent and nice flame. Jack pine is the most com mon species of pine in Manitoba.Tamarack is technic ally a softwood because it has needles, but it actually loses its needles each fall the way a deciduous tree loses its leaves. Tamarack weighs about 3,300 pounds per cord and gives off 22 million BTUs per cord. It burns hot, but not as long as oak. Tamarack wood has a high sap content, so it will “snap, crackle, and pop” while burning, throwing embers, and therefore is not recommended for outdoor firepits.
