Laura Gill RRC Riverdale Recreation Commission received funding through Community Foundations of Canada and has partnered with Riverdale Municipality to build 21 community garden plots.

10 of these are ground level, and 11 will be raised garden beds to make them as accessible as possible. They are approximately 5’x3’ in size.

These gardens plots will be placed in various empty green spaces within the community (Rivers), focusing on enhancing empty community pockets. We will try and accommodate the plot locations near the residents who have rented them.

Results seem to take forever

he National Nursing Week (May 10 to 16, 2021) annual celebrations take place from the Monday to the Sunday of the same week as Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12. The theme this year is #WeAnswerTheCall and was developed by CNA to showcase the many roles that nurses play in a patient’s health-care journey. I can back nurses a long way. Having had four hospital stays and having been in the emergency room three other times since Nov. 27, I can attest to the huge dedication and skill level of nurses.

I have read recently that Manitoba nurses have been without a wage agreement with the Province of Manitoba for four years. If that is the case, the government and the unions better get their act together, as four years without a wage contract is just not a good situation. I am sure the unions have a position and so does the province. Both sides are capable of spin doctoring, but enough is enough already. Get the agreement done sooner rather than later.

L ast week’s column received a number of responses. Only one, so far

disagreed with parts of it. I made the statement in the column that, “It can easily be assumed that more than one or two people a day are dying from the side effects of the C-19 lockdown.” A reader questioned that statement asking where were my statistics to back it up. One source is that there were many more drug overdose deaths in 2020 than in 2019. I feel that increase is connected in part to frustration over C-19, but I could be wrong. I do know of many cases in a care homes where residents have just given up from loneliness and despair. I don’t know if suicide numbers are up or not, but there seems to be a large number and mental health experts are certainly speaking and writing about the problem. But, no, I don’t have stats to prove what I stated. Sometimes you have to go on anecdotal evidence.

I also said, “The irony of the vaccine is that the best vaccines guarantee around 97 per cent protection. That’s three per cent chance you will get C-19 even if you are vaccinated. That’s interesting as only three per cent of the population have gotten C-19 in

Ken Waddell 15 months of pandemic anyway.” I have said that many times, but a wise person told me this past Monday that three per cent got C-19, but we have to figure in the idea that not everyone has been exposed, so I feel that argument certainly has merit. A large number of people have likely not been exposed to C-19 so the infection rate may well be much higher than if everyone was exposed to the virus.

The province has taken extra steps recently. With the variant strains coming along, the government had to do something, BUT in three weeks, there better be results and there better be compensation (again) for the businesses that have had to close. (Some business assistance was announced on May 10).

The lack of vaccinations excuse should be almost gone in three weeks. I am not all that happy getting a vaccine.

Even still, Christine and I are booked to get our shot. It’s not so much for us, but to protect others, such as our staff, family and neighbours. All that said, if Manitoba gets the desired results in three weeks– fine. If not, then all bets are off and a totally new strategy will have to come in. We were supposed to f latten the curve in two weeks. It’s been 16 months. If it doesn’t come to a good result in the next three weeks, then we will know for sure what we have long suspected and that is that governments efforts across Canada were guesswork.

Hopefully, we will get through this soon.

What is the church part two

In part one we looked at Scripture to reaffirm that Jesus Christ is the head of the Christian Church. To have the honour and privilege of being called His Church, it must abide by His instructions revealed in the Bible because it belongs to Him; it was given to Him by God the Father.

•Ephesians 1:22 - “And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church.”

Many “churches” follow Scripture half heartedly, if at all, by changing the very Word of God to conform to the ever changing beliefs of society, and it is folly and perilous to think otherwise.

•Psalm 119:89 - “Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.”

If we want to fully understand the role of the church as established in the New Testament, we need to look into the Old Testament; more specifically the nation of Israel; and to do that, we need a short lesson in history and geography.

It began with a man named Abraham, whom God called, along with his wife Sarah, to leave their home in present day Iraq, and journey to the land of Canaan (present day Israel) which God promised would belong to Abraham and his descendants. They had a son, Isaac, who had a son named Jacob that had a large family of mostly boys, the second youngest being Joseph. Because Joseph was Jacob’s favourite, the jealous brothers sold him to slave traders and told their father that he had been killed by wild animals. But by God’s providence, Joseph ended up in Egypt where he was given a position of authority second only to Pharoah.

Meanwhile, back in Canaan, the land was suffering from drought and famine, and in order to survive, Jacob and his family journeyed to Egypt where food was plenty. Following a family reunion that involved forgiveness and tears of joy, Pharaoh allowed Jacob’s family of about seventy to settle in Egypt. But long after they had passed away, a new Pharaoh was in power who wasn’t familiar with past events, and by this time the family had grown from seventy to a nation of approx. two and a half million. Pharaoh was afraid that the Israelites, so large in number, might side with their enemies if war was to occur, so he decided to enslave them and used the Israelites to build many magnificent structures in Egypt. After a period of approx. 430 years, God called Moses to lead His people out of bondage back to the land of Canaan that had been promised to Abraham. In the beginning of the Book of Deuteronomy, we find the Israelites preparing to enter the land: •Deuteronomy 1:8 - “See, I have given you this land.

Go in and take possession of the land the Lord swore He would give to your fathers - to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - and to their descendants after them.”

The land of Canaan (Israel) they were to enter is a small area of 22,145 square kilometres, less than half the size of Nova Scotia. It is 420 kilometres in length, 115 kilometres at its widest point and 16 at its narrowest.

It’s so small, you may need a magnifying glass to find it on a world map, which begs the question; why would God choose a seemingly insignificant parcel of land on the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea for His people to inhabit? The answer is fascinating; Israel

stands at the crossroads of the continents Europe, Asia and Africa. With the Mediterranean to the west, and desert to the east, Israel served as the bridge for travel and trade between the great civilizations of Assyria, Egypt, Babylonia, Persia and others. Let’s see why this was significant.

The Israelites were God’s chosen people, called to worship the one true God; the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. All other nations were idolatrous, worshipping a multitude of false gods, and as they passed through the land, the Israelites were to proclaim the wonders of their God, the one who had created the heavens and the earth, and that their gods were meaningless idols. Unfortunately, instead of being witnesses for God and inf luencing the idolatrous nations, the opposite happened; they began worshipping the other nations’ gods. God was angry at their disobedience and as a consequence, He allowed the land to be conquered by other nations and the people were led back into slavery. Eventually, a remnant was allowed to return to the homeland, but it was continually occupied because of its strategic importance. During the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, the land was governed by the Roman Empire.

M

ore time for thinking! So I took out a series of random thoughts, of my childhood and youth, of carefree endless days. Of family and friends, of neighbours and school. Walk with me.

Games. From early days, my family enjoyed table games. My parents descried cards, as in the deck of 52, but heated games involved cards, Pit, the buying and selling of stocks. That memory is clear, though I admit the apparent contradiction isn’t. As a child, and as a parent, Monopoly was a wonderful way to spend (waste?) an afternoon and sometimes on until the evening. Still long to get the corner of Boardwalk and Park Place! We learned how to lose, and win, graciously, if we ever wanted the siblings and cousins to play with us again. Chinese Checkers ( is the name politically correct?), crokinole and checkers were also games we enjoyed and honed social and spatial skills.

Outdoor games developed our hearing– anti-i-over in the dark, hide and go seek in the dark as well. You listened carefully, and moved quickly.

As a family, we were able to take holidays. This was before there were entertainment outlets in the vehicle. Hours spent playing I spy, travel bingo, story telling, and one of my favourite– who can be quiet

the longest! We spotted provincial and state license plates, teaching and learning a bit in the confines of the van. One trip Ed determined that our youngest was going to memorize the multiplication tables. Good thing she loved her daddy and learning, or it would have made for a long trip.

Track and field days. Our country school did not have an indoor gymnasium. We had a lower auditorium (basement!) that housed a table tennis and a teachers’ lounge on one side of the building, and a large room that could be used for concerts that was also used as a classroom. We did not have much time allocated to prepare for track and field. Not to worry, we are almost all active, sturdy chore doing farm kids, and therefore fit. The divisional meet day was always the Friday before the May long weekend. The Graysville school made some impressive performances with fellow students heading off to the provincials. My favourites were the dashes, 75 and 100 yard, the jumps, both long and broad, and the hurdles. The beauty and f luidity of clearing the hurdles still brings a smile.

Catching firef lies. One set of second cousins lived 12 or 15 miles away and the terrain was very different from where I spent my early years. (Note– I did not say where I grew up– that is still a work in progress!)

They lived beside a railroad track with a slow creek nearby. Every early summer, we visited them and that is where I first met firef lies. We would chase and capture them, placing them in a glass jar the adults had allowed us to borrow. These tiny creatures fascinate me to this day. The best show ever on a summer night.

Memories have more space to surface these days and I am thankful for the pleasant ones.

Open letter to Cam Dahl

Please consider this an open letter to Cam Dahl, General Manager of Manitoba Pork.

I’d like to respond to your recent article, “Agriculture, environment and animal care” which appeared in the Banner recently.

What a masterful piece of propaganda, Sir! As the main mouthpiece for this “runaway train” of an industry, you have elevated your role as its new “greenwasher-in-chief ” to a whole new level.

According to you, only modern farmers have the tools to “protect our water.”

If you were to do more reading and less writing, you’d know that tests done recently by the global charity, “World Animal Protection” (WAP), conf irmed the presence of antibiotic-resistant genes in public waterways next to eight industrial pig farms in Manitoba. (These are considered the building blocks for organisms dangerous to the public health.)

So where might these "baby superbugs" be coming from, Cam? The moon? Or did they leach in from nearby f ields, where hog waste is copiously spread?

And isn’t it odd that the “comprehensive testing” your industry brags about doing to protect our water didn’t catch this “minor detail?”

It’s already known that overuse of antibiotics, largely in the industry you represent, is a contributing factor in a worsening world health crisis known as “antimicrobial resistance.” It’s already claiming many lives here and abroad. And it's on track to claim many more in the future.

Yet your industry continues to spit in the face of world experts who have long warned against such overuse, especially when the drugs being given to your animals, are of critical importance in the treatment of deadly human infections.

You also fail to mention (you surely commit enough sins of omission to make Lucifer himself blush), your industry has broken a promise to get rid of gestation crates by 2024. These "torture chambers" have conf ined millions of pregnant sows to miserable existences since the dawn of the factory "farm." Now, they won't be done away with for at least eight more years - or 2019!

(Moral: When is a promise not a promise? When your industry makes it, apparently!)

Yet you still have the audacity to suggest; "Manitoba hog farmers adhere to strict animal care codes!"

What universe are you living in, Sir? You and your industry are irresponsible, reckless and unaccountable. And only until we elect a government that will reign you in, (rather than enable its very whim) will there be any hope of improvement.

There are a host of other lies in your article, too, Cam. It’s just that, unlike you, a paid industry shill, I’m a senior who probably doesn't have enough days left to correct them all.
