R iver s a nd Dist r ict Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting last month in which a new executive was announced.

Relative newcomers to the business district, Carina Blankenspoor and Rae Culleton agreed to serve as president and vice-president respectively. Carina opened CB Aspire Salon 2.5 years ago and Rae began Skin by Rae on March 14, 2021. Michelle Budiwski moves into the position of past-president while Ken Tait and Dave Falkevitch have retired after years of executive positions. Treasurer Laura Gill remains on the board as does secretary Sheila Runions.

It was our pleasure to recog nize a long-t ime member who retired from the business district on Oct. 30. At our November meeting, we agreed to present this owner with $100 in Chamber Bucks, but our January meeting was another virtual gathering so the presentation was post-poned one month.

Looking ahead and looking back

T

he bad news is the Ukraine war may last a long time. Even if Russia “wins”, they will lose and the war will go on for a long time.

In Canada, we can pray, send aid, take in refugees and probably a lot more.

There is one particular thing that we can do to strengthen ourselves and that is be aware that food has and will become both scarce and expensive. But more than being aware, we should all do everything we can to grow, harvest and put away as much food as we can.

If you have a garden spot, then fill it up. If you can grow some chickens or pigs or whatever for food, do it. Food can be frozen, dried, put in a root cellar or canned. My wife and I harvest raspberries, rhubarb, plums, apples and tomatoes from our yard. We also pick saskatoons, cranberries and chokecherries. We freeze, can and dry food. Hopefully we are healthy enough to do as much or more this year. If we all do more locally, it leaves more of the commercially provided food for those who can’t grow or gather food for themselves.

The western world has been lulled to sleep over the past three decades. We have fixated on many issues that didn’t make sense. Matthew Syed said in the London Times, “While (Chinas’s) Xi Jinping was resetting the world order through his Belt and Road initiative

and Vladimir Putin was recreating the Russian empire by annexing Georgia and Crimea, we were arguing over gender-neutral toilets.”

Here are some excepts from retired Manitoba Judge Brian Giesbrecht’s most recent column.

“Just the week before, when he invoked the Emergencies Act to deal with what was essentially a local police matter, Justin Trudeau was being compared to brutal dictators, like Xi Jinping. But now, after effectively saying, ‘Just fooling’, and revoking the same legislation he said was absolutely necessary to save the country from the perils of the evil working folk, a more apt comparison would be to Bozo the Clown.

After ruining the reputation of Canada abroad, severely damaging trust in Canada’s banking system and confounding civil rights experts with his astounding overreach– going nuclear to storm bouncy castles– Trudeau has decided that now, that the bouncy castle threat has apparently has been vanquished, he doesn’t need that draconian legislation after all.

But, here’s the real side-splitter. In his little speech revoking the Emergencies Act– legislation that was intended for events slightly more worrisome than bouncy castles and free Sikh food – Trudeau said this: ‘We need to constantly work to defend and improve our democracy, both at home and abroad’.

Ken Waddell Now, that’s funny! Could it be that the temperamental Trudeau is giving us a sign that he is ready to move on?

Remember that Trudeau was a drama teacher before deciding that he wanted to become the leader of every Canadian (and Canadians– for reasons I could never fathom– granted his wish). Could it be that he is announcing through his actions, and absolutely hilarious speech, that he is intent on becoming a stand-up comedian?

If so, I applaud his move. After spending the last two years in an entirely selfimposed COVID-19 prison, Canada is certainly ready for some humour. I am in full support of Trudeau’s career move.

And that new Ottawa police chief– whatever his instant ly forgettable name might be– the one who ordered his police officers to brutalize decent Canadians, and tarnish forever the reputation of Canada as a peaceful and decent place– perhaps make him the new ‘Colonel Klink’ on a Canadian version of ‘Stalag 13’?

So, there are definite comedic possibilities here. In fact, maybe a constitutional change: instead of ‘peace, order and good government’ what about ‘tear gas, billy clubs and lots of laughs’.

Anyway, you get my idea. The sad fact is that this was once a great country.

And we had very good leaders. Never mind the fact that our greatest leader, John A. Macdonald– no Macdonald, no Canada – is regularly toppled as a statue by dullards who can’t even spell his name– even our modern Prime Ministers were serious men. Mulroney, Chrétien, Martin, Harper, these were all people who were taken seriously on the world stage. Domestically, we all had our issues with them, but they were serious men, and they were taken seriously.”

Facing life’s challenges, part two

T

hroughout his years of ministry, the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah was assisted by one of the best scribes anyone could ask for. His name was Baruch and apart from the references made to him in Jeremiah’s own writings, we know very little about him.

We do know that the was a faithful servant of God and that he displayed incredible courage– especially when he was asked to deliver messages from the prophet to kings who were known to imprison, torture and even kill people who told them things they didn’t like to hear. Those threats never stopped Baruch from doing his job.

But Baruch had a significant f law in his character– a f law that Jeremiah felt compelled to identify. In a personal letter to Baruch (see Jeremiah 45:5), the prophet writes: “And you, do you seek great things for yourself ?

Seek them not...” Those words are as relevant today as they were when they were written 2,500 years ago.

History is filled with the stories of people who, like Baruch, were “seeking great things for themselves.”

But, unlike Baruch, many of these individuals did not listen to God’s voice, telling them to “seek them not.” Instead, they pursued their dreams of achieving greatness by securing high positions of responsibility in which they could attain the possessions, power and perks they craved.

Some chose to work through the democratic process.

They stood for election to public office, convinced a majority of people in their district that they were best qualified for the job, and were elected. But once elected, some of them discovered that the demands of the job far exceeded their knowledge, wisdom and emotional maturity. Upon realizing this, they did one of two things. Some used extreme measures to enforce their policies. Others acknowledged their weaknesses and resigned– much to everyone’s relief.

Then there were those who chose a different path.

They saw themselves as “God’s answer to all the world’s problems” and, filled with an overly inf lated view of their own significance, used intimidation, violence and military action to force elected leaders from power and install themselves in their place. But this proved to be counterproductive.

Once settled in their position of authority, these new leaders had to ensure that other leadership aspirants didn’t do to them what they had done to their predecessors. So opposition to the new regime was brutally suppressed. One bad regime was replaced with one that was even worse; and the common people suffered even more.

History’s good leaders, rulers like King David and prophets like Jeremiah, didn’t seek a position of greatness or campaign for election to it. They began

like Baruch, as faithful servants– people whom Jesus described as being “faithful in small things.” Then, when the time was right, God called them to take on more responsibilities, knowing that they would serve just as faithfully in these new roles as they had done before.

Every person on this earth is a unique creation of a wise, all-knowing and all-powerful God. Every person has been blessed with a unique combination of abilities and talents. Every person can do something today to help and encourage someone else.

God has gifted and called each of us to be a blessing to someone else today. He asks us, like he asked Baruch, to resist the urge to seek great things for ourselves. He asks us instead to be faithful in completing today’s tasks. One day, he will reward all who do so with these words: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

he smile began as we drove into the farmyard.

Barns and bins, corrals and workshop, a yard that grew as needs grew. It was the barn that called, one of those red, hipped roof creations with the white X’s on the doors.

As the front door was unlatched and opened, a streak of black fury crossed our path, just one of the farm felines. Immediately, the warmth of the barn banished the numbing cold of the winter day. The scent was heavy and rich, yes, cow droppings, but so much more; hay, and straw, and bovine fragrance. Yes, I think cows smell nice. Overhead, several more farm cats kept a watchful eye on us and their world. Wary, alert, contented.

The object of our visit stood in the back stall, twin calves at her side. The mama was big, back as broad as a dining room table, and the calves, Lineback parentage, were so perfectly matched in colour that if one had not been slightly smaller– ever so slightly– it would have been difficult to distinguish them from each other. This pen was the centre of attention, for the massive cow in the first stall was reluctant to interact with two-legged creatures as she protected her calf. Once there was no attention on her, she called me back, moving to one

side so that I could admire her child, and it, too, was beautiful. When I slipped back to view the twins, she waited and then summoned me again. What the heck, the twins had plenty of admirers; I could give her my time and attention.

I saw the well-ordered barn. The dung removed from the pens, the heated watering bowls, the well fed cattle and cats, the afterbirth still in the gutter, the square bales of clean straw and the fragrant hay. I saw and felt and smelt all these and more. For a moment, I saw too much more.

There I stood, in the barn of my childhood. Also a sturdy, well kept barn, but not a red, hipped roof one.

To my right stood the row of Jersey cows, Daisy the matriarch, the bell carrier, Bambi (anyone who has seen a Jersey calf understands the origin of that name), then Flossie, with one and a half horns, she wanted to be the matriarch! Daisy, wise and slow and the easiest milker, and Penny, her coat still as copper as when she was young. They are older cows, quiet and steady.

The memory of entering that barn, resting my head on a warm f lank as I milked was comforting. Their presence was dignified, strong and eternal. They were a part of all my adolescence, felt my tears, my anger and frustration, and witnessed my carefree tree hugging and tree climbing as I sought them out of the bush at day’s end. The other creatures in the barn were always an assortment of pigs and chickens and sheep. In varying degrees on concentration as life changed. From cattle to sheep, to pigs then chickens.

That moment, there in the alley of that barn, was a gift beyond measure. Simply opening the door to cherished memories.

I’m not on social media, so I still put pen to paper.

I agree with Ken Waddell’s editorial in the March 4th Banner and support the use of our military forces and those of NATO and other allies to fend off the slaughter and destruction in Ukraine. I have no desire for war.

I’m not sure what to do, but this is like a school yard beating where a few bullies pound on one little kid.

Surely someone would step in to help and possibly call the police. Ukraine has asked for help, at least air support, maybe we should answer the bell. Possibly we are already hostages to Putin and his threats.

Our dad, Peter J. Lepp, who is now 92 years old and resides in Dinsdale PCH, witnessed first hand the brutality of the Russian regime in World War Two. He spent his childhood years growing up in Ukraine along the Dnieper river near the city of Zaporizhia. His sisters, mother and he, fled the area along with the retreating German army across Ukraine to the safety of Poland and then Europe. His family was split up, with his mother and two sisters being sent to Siberia. Watching the news this week reminds me of some of the stories dad told us about that dark part of his life. is happening again, possibly worse.

Watching the resolve of President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people fight for their homeland is amazing and inspiring, but they need more than a pat on the back and “we’re praying for you, go get em.” I’m praying for a miracle from within Russia to stop Putin, but I’m sorry to say we may need to put the boots to the ground and help be part of the solution. I would also like to encourage people to find a reputable and responsive organization to support with financial aid. I would suggest Samaritan Purse Canada or Canadian Red Cross.

I am very thankful for the freedom and safety we have in the western world and I know it must not be taken for granted. It came with a hefty cost. I’ll end by leaving one verse from the Bible to ponder.

James 4:17 “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

ho can or do you trust? Most likely, someone who is an expert on the subject.

When my gas furnace blew out in my home, I got in touch with the right person and fixed it in five minutes. When I ordered something and he could not use my credit card, they waited patiently until I realized I had used the wrong card.

We have been told not to believe every thing they tell you on the media. They use a lot of sensationalism to make it better or worse than it really is. If you get a phone call or an email from someone you do not know and it looks suspicious, do not answer it. It most likely is a fraud. When someone wants to be your friend and smooth talk, be careful . It could be a false message.

There is, however, one person who we can trust.

In 2 Timothy 3:16, we can learn that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

The Bible teaches us truth, because God is truth.

Manitoba Prairie Quilters

Founded in 1983, the Manitoba Prairie Quilters (MPQ) is a group dedicated to enriching the art of quiltmaking. Quilters of all levels, from beginners all the way up to instructors, come together to explore the world of quilting. The group is very active, with monthly meetings, workshops, and full days of sewing together (normally in-person, but they have continued through the last two years virtually). Members can choose to be as involved as they want, with opportunities to volunteer, organize events, sell or donate items, take a class to learn a new skill, and more.

The MPQ has nearly 300 members throughout Manitoba, as far north as Thompson, and even has members in Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Joan Dupuis-Neal, President of the MPQ, states “Zoom has really opened things up. Although quilts are much better seen in person, there are some positive aspects to doing things virtually.”

For example, money normally used to rent a church hall for their monthly meetings has been put into bringing in out-of-province (or out-of-country) guest speakers for workshops over Zoom. These workshops expand the horizons of members. For example, one upcoming workshop is on thread painting, by an expert residing in Ontario.

Their biannual quilt show, a full 3-day event in Winnipeg, was slated to be in April 2022 but has been postponed by a year due to hesitations surrounding the Covid situation. That being said, the quilt raffle associated to the show will go ahead in-person. Instead of the usual quilt show this year, the MPQ executive has organized a series of virtual workshops, some open to members only, some open to the public. Some workshops require specialty items that are hard to come by, so registration is required ahead of time so that they can send out kits to registrants with all the products and tools necessary to fully participate in the workshop.

Riverdale Wellness Check - How are you doing?

Sarah Plosker Rivers Banner The Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) Health Promotion Team has collaborated with the Rivers Police Service, the Riverdale Recreation Commission, and other community partners to discuss ways our community can support positive mental health and wellness for our residents. A few partner meetings were held where discussions and brainstorming brought us to some key ideas to assist in this cause. One of the activities that is now in place is Riverdale Wellness Hour, held on the first Monday of the month (the first two have taken place in the Legion hall Feb. 7 and Mar. 7).

During this hour, our local EMS staff are providing an opportunity to check your blood pressure; Tara Smith and Christa Veitch, local Health Promotion Coordinators, are offering education and resources on health-related topics; Laura Gill, Recreation Director, will be sharing some exercise and relaxation tips; and our local police department will be in attendance to be part of the discussions and answer any questions. Each month there will be a new wellness topic discussed and we plan to have guest speakers for some months as well. For Mon, Apr. 4, Esther Krahn will be in attendance to discuss grief and recovery.

Q: How long have you been a police officer with Rivers Police Service and what did you do before you came to Rivers?

A: I’ve been a Police Officer with Rivers Police for 2.5 years and before that I was an Auxiliary Constable for about 10 months. Before policing I travelled on and off for 6 years with my main stay being in South Africa for 3 years. In between my travels I worked at McCain Foods in Carberry.

Q: What are your longterm career aspirations?

A: I’d love to get into a few specialty units including Major Crime Investigations and Canine.

Q: What’s something you find challenging about your work?

A: One common challenge is navigating through the multiple systems to provide help for those who are in need of mental health services.

Q: What was the best advice you were ever given?

A: My best piece of advice was “Treat everyone with respect, you never know

A: I have always wanted to be a police officer but at one stage I wanted to be a veterinarian because I love animals and grew up on a farm!

A: Most definitely an extrovert!

A: I grew up on a farm with my parents and my sister. My parents still live on our hobby farm and we have lots of different animals including sheep, goats, cows, miniature horses, pot-bellied pigs and many more. My sister just had her first child.

I am an aunty to a beautiful baby boy! I currently live in Brandon with my partner who is a Guidance Counsellor with the Brandon School Division. We have two cats and a dog who keep us very entertained! I love spending time with my friends and family. I enjoy being outdoors and also playing sports. Soccer is my favorite!

One Skillet Italian Sausage Pasta from

3/4 lb mild Italian sausage meat 1 ¼ cups water 1 large can diced tomatoes with basil, garlic, and oregano 1 cup tomato sauce 2 cups of fusilli or penne dry pasta 1/4 cup grated cheese Brown sausage in large pan for five min. Drain.

Add the rest of the above ingredients, bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and cook for 15 min. until pasta is cooked. Serve sprinkled with grated cheese. Serves 4.

From Brenda: I got the recipe about a year ago from the “Your Morning” TV show. I plan ahead to make it when I have a busy afternoon, as it is so quick and easy.

For the two of us, there are enough leftovers for another meal, which is handy!

An eventful year at Elton Collegiate

Elton Collegiate is a high school in Forrest offering a whole slate of activities for Grades 9-12 students.

Things have been nearly back to normal this school year, with all activities going forward with masking and social distancing in place. Elton’s principal Mark Geekie gave a laundry list of activities that students are involved in this academic year, ranging from sports to student clubs.

On the sports side of things, there was a full volleyball season this year, with four teams: junior/

senior girls/boys. The JV and SV girls were zone champions. The senior girls and senior boys made it to quarter finals at Provincials. The junior boys won silver at Provincials.

The high school hockey is about three quarters of the way done their season. The hockey team is combined with Rivers, Hamiota, and Strathclair. The girls basketball semi-final playoffs were Mon. Mar. 7, with Elton facing off against Rivers. Badminton will be starting up soon. There is a ski trip planned for Mar. 17 at Asessippi, with around 25 per cent of students taking part.

Other extracurriculars include a Youth Philanthropy group, which meets once a week, an Activism group, which examines social justice issues, and a yearbook committee.

Visitors include three university students who will doing their practicum at Elton Collegiate, starting Mar. 14. Val Caldwell will be giving a presentation on internet safety in early April.

Looking toward the end of this school year, the Grade 11 students will be going out for their work experience in May. Their placements depend on their interests, and school officials try to coordinate and personalize the experience based on the goals of the students. The Grade 12 students had their cap and gown photos Mar. 2 and are gearing up for an in-person, full traditional grad ceremony. This will be the first regular grad ceremony since 2019, and the Grade 12 students are very excited.

Why do raisins dance in soda pop?

Sarah Plosker Rivers Banner We’ll explore what causes raisins to reach new heights in this week’s hands-on activity. This activity is best suited for Grades 1-5 children.

What you need: Clear carbonated soda (soda water) or clear carbonated soft drinks, water, two glass/plastic containers (the taller the better), and of course, raisins.

What to do Fill one container with clear soda and one container with water. What do you think will happen when you add raisins to each container? Place some raisins in each container and observe. Were you right?

What’s happening?

Soda has something in it that almost no other liquid has: lots of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide in soda is a gas that makes it bubbly. There are some places in nature where water absorbs lots of carbon dioxide by f lowing over rocks and minerals with certain chemicals in them, usually in places with high volcanic activity. There are some brands of natural carbonated water that bottle it straight from these locations; most of these premium waters are a part of the Fine Water Society (yes, that’s a thing; the FWS includes other high-end bottled waters like glacier water and iceberg water, and if you have to ask how much it costs, you can’t afford it). Most carbonated water has had carbon dioxide added to it.

When we put the raisins into the soda, the carbon dioxide molecules moving around the raisins slow down. As more carbon dioxide molecules hit the raisin, they begin to build up near the raisin and attach to it. The combination of raisin and carbon dioxide gas is less dense than the raisin alone, so when many bubbles form on the raisin, they lift the raisin to the surface. When some of the bubbles break, the density increases, the raisins sink, and then the whole process is repeated. This makes the raisins appear to dance!

Why does it matter?

Pockets of air or gases within solid materials make many things less dense. Air spaces in boats make a boat able to f loat on water. Life jackets are filled with spongy material with lots of air spaces that make the overall jacket less dense and more able to f loat on water and hold up a person. Sponge and pumice are natural materials that can f loat because they are less dense than water due to the millions of tiny air spaces they contain.

Carbon dioxide, created as a result of acid-base chemical reactions, is important in baking to make bubbles form in cakes or cookies as they are baking.

This helps make cakes and cookies light and spongy, rather than heavy and dense. We looked into this effect in the baking powder versus baking soda Let’s Talk Science activity last week.

Investigate further: You can repeat the experiment using different objects such as rice, dried kidney beans, or paper clips.

Virtual monthly meetings involve over 130 participants, with a guest speaker talking about a particular type of quilting they do, or providing a hands-on demonstration.

Each month has a different theme: February was heritage month, with four past presidents discussing the past and future of the MPQ and offering advice. Marketing March highlights all the local quilt shops that are normally vendors at their quilt show. Other months are centered around different types of quilting (e.g. artistic quilts that hang on the walls, modern quilts that involve larger pieces, more solid coloured fabrics, and more modern quilting designs). Joan explains “There’s so much variety in this craft. Everyone has their own style they prefer.” January was mystery month, where members could order a shopping bag full of fabric and would make a quilt using the fabric in the bag. It was a fun challenge, as participants didn’t get to see the fabric or choose the colour palette ahead of time, and they were somewhat restricted as to their choices of pattern blocks.

The MPQ has a sister quilt guild in Grand Forks North Dakota. Their annual International Guild Day in May normally involves a bus trip, alternating each year between the two cities. In 2021, the event went forward virtually, with a full day itinerary of speakers and even a yoga instructor. The 2022 IGD will be virtual as well. The MPQ also hosts sew-in days (again, normally in-person, but they have continued virtually), which provide a chance for members to hang out and have fun chatting.

The MPQ gives out awards at the quilt show, with quilt ribbons, best of show, runner up, awards of excellence for a specific technique (e.g. hand applique, use of thread, etc), and points of praise arrows literally pointing to a particular noteworthy aspect of the quilt. They also give out a Crocus Award for members who volunteer a tremendous amount of their time.

The list of activities of the MPQ goes on and on. They have a quilting library, in Winnipeg, where once a month members can go pick up things like special rulers, magazines, and books, and then return them the following month. Members can participate in special challenges given out by the President twice a year. These are ideas to inspire their next creation. A recent challenge was “Covid and you”, where members quilted scenes that embodied their last two years. Quilts often wind up on display at shows, museums, and art galleries.
