Local dancer takes home gold!

Serving the Rivers, Rapid City and Oak River areas for 109 years

Submitted Razzamatazz Dance Board Razzamatazz Dance Club in Rivers was represented for the first time by Meadow Chiborak at the Terpsichore Dance Competition held at the Convention Centre in Winnipeg May 21-23, 2022. The competition was adjudicated by judges from Toronto who are nationally and internationally acclaimed. Meadow preformed her acro solo which earned her a score of 91.6 per cent, resulting in a Gold medal!

Acro dance is a style that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. Her dance was choreographed and taught by Charlene Hiscock, who has been Razzmatazz’s instructor for 26 years.

At two years old, Meadow began taking classes at Razzamatazz Dance Club. She excels in her classes of acro, ballet, lyrical, tap and jazz. This dance season she began to share her love of dance by assisting Miss Charlene with the younger dance groups. This 13 year old also figure skates, plays soccer, and was a member of the Rivers Collegiate Grade eight volleyball, badminton, soccer and track teams. She trains hard all year!

s r e p or t e d i n t he March 9 edition, the Grade 12 Interdisciplinary Studies in Science class at Rivers Collegiate planned a project for Riverdale Harvest.

Dubbed the Boat Load of Food, students secured a canoe from Rolling River School Division with an intent to f ill it with non-perishables. Although the campaign was fully organized by that class, the original idea came from a suggestion made by harvest volunteer Liliane Dupuis.

“I heard the idea at a meeting in Brandon. St. Augustine School had tried Fill a Canoe in conjunction with the 10-day Festival du Voyaguer in Winnipeg in February. It was very successful and whenever I hear food bank, my ears always perk up!”

She then brought the suggestion to Riverdale Harvest, which supported the idea and asked her to present the promo-

tion to the schools.

Pupils co-ordinated the entire month-long promotion, which culminated in a ceremonious presentation on March 20 to Riverdale Harvest president Heather Gray and Liliane.

Because the snow had melted so much, the canoe could not be portaged across the street to Zion Church (home of Riverdale Harvest). Rather, the teens carried bags, boxes and garbage

cans from the school foyer into the church basement the afternoon of March 21, where the food was weighed and sorted.

Although the project was a senior students brainstorm, the entire high school was encouraged to participate. The collegiate hosted a poor boy floor hockey tournament in which to play, athletes had to pay with food for the canoe. Some students also canvassed Rivers, Oak River

and Chimo Beach areas for contributions from the community.

When all was said and done, the scales at Riverdale Harvest noted a total of 434 pounds, “a fabulous amount,” says Heather.

“We are so pleased they decided to help those we serve. A lot of times kids don’t get enough credit but this group of students certainly deserves some praise.

All students stayed behind to help check expiry dates, sort and

put away in the proper place on the shelving units. They were fantastic! We are very, very pleased.”

Elementary school staff member/Harvest volunteer Yvonne Crouch initiated a similar campaign in her school. That threeweek effort simply encouraged students to leave product in the canoe; 87 pounds of food was collected from the younger group on Thursday, March 22.

Points to ponder

O

n this overcast, windy and rainy Tuesday morning when this column is being written, there is much to ponder.

Seemingly endless days of rain have hampered crop seeding to a near desperation point. Some crops have been seeded in the area but there are many thousands of acres yet untouched.

Manitoba Crop Insurance deadlines have been extended but are looming ominous on our very grey horizon.

Over the past few years, overly dry conditions have hampered yields and water tables have been dropping. That would seem to be reversed now as the fields are saturated at a level not seen for a long time. The aquifers should be recharged now and that is a very good thing in the long term. Not sure how the crops are going to be seeded.

Hopefully the Colorado Low that came through with wild winds and rain Monday night will signal a major change in the weather.

It’s almost certain that man-caused climate change will be blamed for the weather patterns.The people who claim that, didn’t live through the 1950s when f ields were saturated, crop seeding delayed and sometimes denied and wild winds and rains were a common experience. But then, of course in the 1950s, we didn’t have the Green movement to educate us as to how bad people are for the climate and the world. They forget that without people, and lots of them, Manitoba would not be produ-

cing much food. You can only feed so many people on buffalo and berries.

If that wasn’t the case, the population of Manitoba would have been much higher 200 years ago.

On the national stage, the federal Liberal party is well trained in the “never waste a crisis” methodology of politics. They have chosen a tragic moment in history surrounding another school shooting on the U.S. to bring in more gun regulations. They are using the time-worn notion that if they pretend to control the sale of guns, that crazy people won’t find a gun and shoot other people and often themselves. I am not currently a gun owner. When I had farm and an acreage, I did own guns. I shot gophers, especially when they decided to move under my barn. I would have shot any animal that might have threatened to do harm to my family or my livestock.

I shot the odd magpie or grackle as I am of the philosophy that they can go live in the bush and leave the robins and other song birds alone in my yard.

All that said, banning any guns will not stop mass shootings. You don’t ban cars because they can be driven too fast. You get the picture. We don’t have a gun problem, we have a people attitude problem. The Liberals know that but they also know they can pummel the Conservatives by escalating the debate about guns. They have no intention of banning guns and most of them know gun bans may gain votes

The federal liberals will also use the ongoing debate in the United States around abortion rulings to beat up on the Conservatives. There is a huge patchwork of rules about abortion in the states. What most people don’t realize is that in Canada, there is NO law against abortion. A person can abort a baby right up until birthing if they can get doctor to do the task. Most people are shocked when they hear that. It basically is not discussed enough. And that’s the problem with the abortion debate. There is not enough rational and informed discussion. Demonstrations for and against don’t shed light on the argument, they simply raise animosity on both sides. What is needed is a full and thorough discussion raging from conception to contraception to adoption and other alternatives. Abortion will never go away. I have pondered this issue for decades and there is no way it can be or should be banned. It should be much rarer than it is though, of that I am certain. We know of what we speak, as our family has faced the

issue several times over the decades and if anybody wants to know what that experience has been, I can discuss it personally.

If we stand back from any issue, large or small the general philosophy should be that while governments needs to be involved in some issues but not in nearly as many as they are. If we are short of people in some industries, I can tell you where the workers are. They are stuffed into government offices doing tasks that are less than necessary and often harmful to the economy.

So as we ponder that the rain continues to fall in this part of the world and bombs fall in other parts, we need to take a deep breath and ask ourselves, how can we do things better. If we consult with God a bit more and depend on government a lot less, we would be better off I think.

t was the opportunity of a lifetime for David. His enemy, King Saul was sleeping soundly in a cave.

So were all of those who were assigned to protect him. David was standing next to the man who had sworn to kill him. What would he do?

Abishai, the soldier who had snuck into Saul’s camp with David, looked at the sleeping king and said: “David, just give me the word, and I will stab him through his heart. I will pin him to the ground with one blow. I won’t have to strike him twice.”

But David refused the offer. “I can’t allow that,” he said. “He is the king. He is the Lord’s anointed. God will destroy him, or his time will come to die or he will be killed in battle. But my hand will not be lifted against him.” The two left the cave, made their way past the guards and were soon back in their own tents.

The next morning Saul was told that they had been there. His reaction shocked those whose negligence nearly cost him his life. This was the second time they had been caught sleeping on the job. It was also the second time David had spared Saul’s life. Saul got the point. David was not a threat to him. Saul never threatened David again.

David’s words (which you can read in 1 Samuel 26:112) have come to mind many times over the past few

months. I wonder how David would have responded to Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 US Presidential election, or to the signs seen and sentiments expressed during the recent Trucker’s convoy in Ottawa.

I don’t think he would have approved of their attempts to overthrow legally elected governments.

Neither would St. Paul. His views on the topic are very clear: “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities;” he wrote. “For there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed. And those who resist will incur judgment.” (Romans 13:1-2) “But,” we might argue, “Things were different in those days.” Yes-they were-they were worse. Saul had become a ruthless tyrant who murdered anyone he saw as a threat to him and his descendants. In St. Paul’s day, Rome’s emperors ruled the world. They tolerated no opposition. Revolts were put down quickly. Those who led them were put to death. Rome’s message was clear: “Behave!! Or else!”

Yet, despite the cruelty and injustice of which these leaders were guilty, David would not lift his hand against Saul; and St. Paul told his readers that “they were to be subject to the governing authorities” because God

had put them in the positions they held. Those words are as relevant today as they were when St. Paul first put them on paper.

There is nothing wrong with voicing our displeasure when governments pass laws with which we do not agree. Nor is there anything wrong with criticizing leaders who do not obey the laws the laws they pass, follow the rules they impose on the rest of us or act in ways that embarrass our country and its citizens. But until laws are repealed or rules are changed, we are to respect those in authority and obey the laws they pass.

This raises a final important question. How can we constructively criticize those in power without violating the teachings of Scripture? That topic will be discussed in next week’s column.

T

here was a time when the sound of the wind would call me. Walking into the wind, braced and striding, was an adventure. There was the time, answering that call on a winter day, my neighbour was concerned that I was in distress and needed help. Nope, just pitting myself against the wind. I also used to enjoy watching a summer thunderstorm.

Perhaps it determining factor in the changes is my age. Perhaps it is that I am more aware of the power of the wind and the storm and my respect is edging over to fear. Whatever it is, these windy days do not hold the appeal that they used to. That adage – forty days of wind if it is windy of Good Friday- has become the norm; every spring is windy!

I tire of corralling the lawn chairs. I really don’t want to tether them, nor haul them out every time the sun is shining- tho this spring that would not be all that often! Between my garages, separating the lawn from the cement, is a garden bench/arbour.

It is tall, possibly eight feet, has lattice sides, and is quite solid and heavy. The wind from the north can actually topple the structure. So I have embedded fence posts, painted white, to prevent the falling.

They do work, but this spring, more than once, I have had to hoist the beast back on the concrete after it has been slid to the south. Alas, I am not happy about doing this. I am careful not to leave any possible missiles in the yards either. I would not appear dignified if someone witnessed my careening and pivoting attempting to retrieve a f ly away.

Flying kites has always appealed to me. One needs a bit of a wind, not a hurricane, to have the kite dip and soar and dance. This takes me back to a fall day when my youngest was probably six or seven. I was busy, busier than I should have been, when she asked me to come f ly the kite with her. I asked her to go and try by herself. Some time later I glanced out the living room window from the home on the farm at Riding. Out there, in the neighbour’s open field, was my wee lass, the kite doing exactly what a kite should do- dipping and soaring and dancing.

Needless to say I set my tasks aside and joined her.

Lesson learned.

The sound of the wind in the trees still calls me.

If one listens, really listens, one can differentiate between the sound in the evergreens and the sometimes greens. A gentle breeze has the tree sisters exchanging secrets, whispering quietly to one another.

A stronger wind has them bracing and encouraging one another, and those gale force winds? Why the whole forest family weeps as a member looses a limb or succumbs completely- the top broken and fallen, or roots up and exposed. They know the wind and all its moods and strengths.

I am thankful that at days end, snug in my home, I sound of the wind seldom frightens me. I have secured the perimeter. Let it blow.

During the week of May 23rd – May 29th, Spr uce Pla ins RCM P dealt with 50 police activities.

May 23rd – RCMP responded to a report of a stolen SUV in Minnedosa; the matter is still under investigation. Police received a report of assault in Neepawa.

A fter invest igat ion, it was determined that no assault took place and the matter was unfounded.

Police were dispatched to a report of a dangerous driver near Neepawa.

Patrols were made but the suspect vehicle was not

located.

May 24th – RCM P responded to a disturbance in Minnedosa where two males were said to be fighting. Both individuals were gone on police arrival. While conducting a curfew check in Minnedosa, police arrested a male who had an outstanding warrant with another police agency.

Police received a report of a break and enter to a property in the RM of Minto-Odanah. There was insufficient evidence to proceed further.

M ay 25t h – Pol ice responded to three abandoned 911 c a l l s; one in the Municipality of Harrison Park, one in

the RM of Oakview and one in the Municipality of Westlake-Gladstone.

All were determined to be false.

May 26th - RCMP responded to a report of a firearm being discharged in Rapid City; the matter is still under investigation. Police received another abandoned 911 call at a property in the Municipality of WestlakeGlad stone wh ich wa s determined to be false again. Police responded to a report of mischief in Neepawa. There was insufficient evidence to proceed.

May 28th – RCM P were patrolling in the RM of North Cypress-

Lang ford and noticed a vehicle struggling to maintain speed and stay in their lane. The vehicle was pulled over and an alcohol screening test was administered to the driver which resulted in a fail. The driver was arrested, charged and released to a sober family member.

May 29th – RCMP responded to multiple abandoned 911 calls in Minnedosa, the Municipality of Harrison Park and Riverdale. All were determined to be false.

RCMP conducted 9 traff ic enforcement actions during this reporting period.

T

o be able to sing to the glory of God I such a blessing. People are smiling. They are excited or you can see them at peace and relaxed.

For many they are memories that are f loating back from when they were growing up. It does not matter if we sing Easter or Christmas hymns in the summer.

Sometimes we sing a hymn twice. Nobody notices.

It is music mostly for the seniors, so I fit right in.

I am so thankful that the Lord has given me just enough ability to beable to play the old time hymns on the piano. And when I have to stopthat some else will carry on the torch.

David sang in the Psalms for many, Kings included.

He encourages us “to praise Him with the sound of the trumpet, praise Him with the psaltery and harp (Psalm 150:3).

The regular monthly meeting of the Rivers Legion Ladies Auxiliary was held May 24,2022 in the Rivers Legion upper hall following a delicious potluck supper.

The following medals and awards were presented before the meeting; pins of service Eleanor Childerhose 15 years,Lisa Smith 15 years, Marilyn Halliday 10 years, Karen Cullen 10 years.Past Secretary medals given to Madame Donna Falkevitch,Madame Donna Morken, and Madame Eleanor Childerhose.

There were twelve members present at the meeting.There was one new application for membership.

The f lowers will be planted in the cenotaph as weather permits.

A grant was received from New Horizons for Seniors.This was used to get new f looring for the kitchen which has been installed.

A donation has been made in memory of Darryl Childerhose to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Decoration Day will be held June 5, at the cenotaph.

The next meeting will be August 30, 2022.

Rivers Police Service Law of the Month Children’s car seats

Children are our most precious cargo. In the month of June Rivers Police will put extra focus on the proper and legal use of car seats.

Section 186(9) of the H ighway Tra f f ic Act states that by law, all children under 5 years of age and weighing less than 22 kg (50lbs) must travel in an approved child car seat at all times.

As of August 8, 2013, a law came into force in Manitoba that makes it compulsory for older children travelling in motor vehicles to use booster seats. For your child's safety, provincial law requires children to be seated in booster seats until they are at least 145 cm (4'9") tall, 36 kg (80 lb.) OR 9 years old.

Drivers are responsible for ensuring that child passengers are properly seated and restrained in child car seats, seat belts and booster seats.

Fines for fa i l ing to properly secure a child start at $298.00.

Exemptions: The re-

quirement does not apply when: -The motor vehicle is registered in a jurisdiction that does not require the use of child restraining devices by persons who are the passenger's age, weight or height or who have the passenger's physical characteristics or special needs; -The vehicle is a rental vehicle that is rented for a period of 21 days or less; -The vehicle is a taxicab or livery transporting a passenger for hire; -The driver can present a medical certificate certifying that the person is, during the period stated in the certificate, unable for medical reasons to be seated or restrained in a child restraining device, and the certificate is produced to a peace officer on request; -A child is being transported casually or occasionally by a person who is not the parent or guardian, and the vehicle is not equipped with a child restraining device that is suitable for the

passenger's use in accordance with this regulation; -T he motor veh icle is not required to be equ ipped w it h sa fet y belts by the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (e.g. buses, vehicles manufactured before 1971).

The Child Restraining Devices Regulation requires the use of booster seats until children are at least: 145 centimeters (4'9") tall; 36 kilograms (80 pounds); OR nine years old.

In this week’s “recipes with a story” column, our featured recipe comes again from Valery Collins, who lives in Rivers.

This is Val’s mother-in-law’s recipe for oatmeal cake. Following Kathy Robert’s carrot cake recipe in the Banner’s May 6 issue, it seems there’s a general trend to try to make cake healthy so as to relieve the guilt of eating so much of it. Just remember, you have to eat it before it goes bad; letting food spoil and throwing it out is wasteful. This recipe makes a large 13 x 9 inch cake, so enjoy as much of it as fast as you can so that none of it goes to waste, and don’t feel guilty about it! Mix together: 1 C white sugar 1 C brown sugar 1 ½ C flour ¼ tsp salt ½ tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp cinnamon Vanilla extract to taste 2 eggs 1 C oil (Mazola brand—this isn’t the first time this brand has been recommended in recipes featured in this column) Add oatmeal mixture. Seemingly overnight, dandelions have popped up and are in bloom.

They make for good eatin’—waste not want not.

You can pick the blossoms, dip them in your favourite batter, and deep fry them.

They take on a yummy salty, greasy taste and are packed with antioxidants, so they’re healthy for you too. Or if you prefer, you can use the raw f lowers as a salad topping. Probably slightly healthier that way.

The baseball season has started up this past week; players were itching to get on the field and weren’t going to let a little rain get in their way. We hope to provide regular updates as the season gets into full swing.

If you’re getting a bit antsy because you have so many things to do but can’t get them done because of the rain, you might be suffering from the Zeigarnik effect, named after Lithuanian-Soviet psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik who discovered it 100 years ago. It describes how we’re better at remembering unfinished tasks or unsolved problems compared to tasks we’ve already completed or problems we’ve already solved. She found t hat our subconscious mind can dif ferentiate between finished and unfinished tasks, and then pushes t he unf inished tasks to the forefront of

our conscious mind, so our subconscious mind is continuously poking our conscious mind to complete our unfinished tasks.

You may be sitting inside with an underlying sense of distress as you wait for this never-ending rain to stop, wondering what you can do to ease your mental discomfort, given that you can’t actually complete your tasks at this time. Psychologists have found that you can rid yourself of the stress simply by acknowledging the unfinished tasks and

making a plan for how to finish them in the future.

Once this has been sorted, your subconscious mind feels that it’s done its job and can sit back and relax, and stop pestering your conscious mind. So, make a “to do” list, do a bit of brainstorming as to how to accomplish the items on your list or how to solve the problems/overcome the obstacles related to the items on the list, and then make the most of these rainy days by spending it in a more relaxed state of mind.

Homeschooling: the alternative solution

Why has homeschooling become so popular in recent years? In 2020, when Covid lockdowns began, the public school system, teachers, and parents, were not prepared for the realities of remote learning. Students in the public school system fell behind and essentially lost a year of learning. Many parents saw homeschooling as a better alternative, and made the switch either right away or for the following school year. Before 2020, roughly 4,000 children in Manitoba were homeschooled.

By 2021, the number was around 8,500—that’s over double what it was in 2019.

While some parents have

chosen to put their children back in public school, others have opted to continue homeschooling, and the numbers of homeschooled children continue to rise.

There’s a plethora of reasons to homeschool: if your child is gifted or has a particular interest, you can tailor their curriculum to their talents; if they have special needs, you can accommodate them through one-on-one lessons, oral vs written exams, alternative teaching/learning styles, and other unique approaches. More and more concerns have been raised over how the public school system has and is navigating through the Covid situation, and how teachers are putting Math and English, arguably two

of the most important subjects, on the backburner and replacing lessons with indoctrination. In Oct. 2021, the CBC reported that high school students in Manitoba are dead last in the nation for math and reading.

For parents wondering where to get started, the Westman Homeschool Connect ion Facebook group is a popular place to get connected and learn from other parents. In the past, they’ve offered webinars on how to get started with homeschooling, what paperwork to fill out (and examples/advice on how to fill it out), how to create transcripts for high school students, and more.

In terms of the logistical aspects of homeschooling

(in particular, one parent either having to decrease the number of hours they work, or stop working altogether), keep in mind that if you are currently commuting to work, you’re likely spending $15-20 per day on gas alone. Then factor in buying lunch, coffee, maybe a readymade supper for the family because you’re working so much you don’t have time to make a home-cooked meal, special work clothes, giving Justin Trudeau a cut of your paycheque (a.k.a. taxes), and you might be spending half your workday paying to work. Makes you think, doesn’t it? Instead, you could be at home teaching fractions to your children by baking with them, learning about plants

native to Westman while taking nature walks, and checking out novels at the Prairie Crocus library, all while nurturing your child’s development—and with a zero-minute commute as the cherry-on-top.

Janae and Jason Isaak live in Riverdale Municipality with their four children. Janae homeschools their two school-aged children. Although relatively new to homeschooling, Janae says she loves the lifestyle more and more with each passing day. “It really bonds us together as a family and provides a unique opportunity for sibling relationships to flourish. We can explore lots of different ideas and raise kids who are critical thinkers.” Homeschooling

allows your child to explore their passions and interests.

Many parents hire a tutor for specific subjects at the higher levels (like grade 12 math). Homeschooling parents often say that in the beginning, they put lots of pressure on themselves to do it all and do it perfectly.

Instead, the goal should be to strive to instill a love of learning, rather than striving for perfection.

“I love creating a home atmosphere where the kids are excited to learn and have lots of great books and resources available to them,” Janae explains. In a way, homeschooling is just an extension of what most parents are already doing in their home anyway. While not easy, it’s a lot easier than you might think.

Obituaries KENNETH HUGH ALLEN Kenneth Hugh Allen passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones at the Kamsack Hospital on January 16/22 at the age of 64.

Kenneth will be remembered by his children: Amber (José), Rebecca, Karlee (Stefan), katelynn, Kyler and Kenzie grandchildren: Alex, Josh, Mateo, Lucas, Jaden, Stefan JR, Zabella, Kaiya, Siblings: Jim, Bill, Shirley, Linda, Gary, Tom (Shelly).

Kenneth enjoyed farming, it was his life! He grew up in the rivers area and worked on a farm as soon as he could.

He always had an ice cream treat in his freezer for every child that came to his house. He was also very proud of this children and even more proud of his grandchildren.

Kenneth spent many years hunting and fishing when he wasn’t teaching his nieces, nephews and children how to put a chicken to sleep.

The family invites you to attend a service on Saturday June 4/22 at 1:30pm at the Rivers Anglican Church. A private interment will be held at the rivers cemetery, tea to follow.

A little slice of paradise

Sarah Plosker Rivers Banner Sitting in Donna and Tad Hoyak’s backyard, you can feel all your stress slip away. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the garden is starting to wake up from the long winter. Tad was a welder for CN Rail and Donna owned and operated a restaurant in Alexander. Tad travelled a lot for work, so when they retired in 2004, he promised Donna he’d turn the backyard into a little slice of paradise so they wouldn’t need to travel during retirement.

Tad is a man of his word: the backyard is i ncred ible. Don n a i s or ig ina l ly from Nova Scotia, so he built a raised walkway to simulate a boat dock, and incorporated lobster cages into the garden. His fix-it mentality from his former job shows in many places in the garden, including a bird bath made out of an “upcycled” broken down car tire changer, and a raised garden bed made from their (now adult) children’s bed. He also built pergolas overlooking the pond that, you guessed it, he also built. In fact, the only thing in the backyard he didn’t build himself is the bridge that goes over the pond; that was from Kiwanis Park. When the park no longer needed it, Tad scooped it up.

The pond is home to Donna and Tad’s six Koi fish. Years ago, they had 30 Koi, but the fish were a lot younger and smaller then. Now, at around 10-15 years old, they are rather large—18-24” in length—so six is plenty for t he 1, 5 0 0 - g a l lon pond. Donna explained how in the winter, they move the fish to a shed that’s heated to a little above freezing, so the f ish hibernate for six months, not eating and barely moving. There are several different species of Koi in the pond, with one having come all the way from Saskatchewan.

There are so many bi rd s t hat frequent Donna and Tad’s backyard, it’s impossible to name them all. There are hummingbirds, goldfinch, redwings, robins, sparrows, buntings, orioles, doves, grosbeaks, crows, ravens, hawks, and more. They had a few falcons visit for five con sec ut ive su m mer s for their daily hunt, but t hey’ve stopped coming. One young falcon appeared once with a broken w ing, so Tad grabbed it, dropped it off with the authorities, and they were able to get the bird the medical attention it needed. The birds are a happy consequence of the beautiful garden; Donna and Tad didn’t set out to create a minibird sanctuary (though Donna is now an avid

bird photographer).

Donna and Tad host lots of family and friends who come for a v isit in their backyard just to relax and unwind.

Strangers and acquaintances have come to bird watch, and Donna and Tad often do garden tours in July/Aug. when the garden is in full bloom.

Their 50th anniversary was July 31, 2021 and they plan to renew their vows this coming July in front of friends and family in their backyard in a large celebration (which couldn’t happen last year).

Ta d w a s bor n a nd raised in R ivers. His mom was in the restaurant business for 43 years, even owning and operating her very own Hedy’s Cafeteria, a restaurant on Second Ave. beside the present-day Lee’s Restaurant. The building was owned by Tad’s dad, who ran it as a shoe shop until he retired, at which point they made the conversion from shoe shop to restaurant. Donna grew up at the Royal Canadian Air Force base CFB Rivers, 4km west of Rivers. She and Tad lived in Bradwardine for 13 years before moving back to R ivers. They have two children, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, all of whom live in Brandon.

They also have four furbabies (dogs).
