Keep it polite

very so often, a comment or a letter comes along that’s a bit discouraging. We have received a lot of letters lately and most have been very well thought out and reasonably well composed. In addition, we also get a large number of submitted columns.

We don’t have room for many submitted pieces but we try our very best. We have to make decisions, right or wrong, we have to make decisons.

So the discouraging letter that came along made my task easier this week.

First of all, the letter was not local, it wasn’t even from Manitoba. Second, the writer decided to call me some derogatory names and that’s fine, but when people choose to use disparaging names and comments, it masks over whatever the message may have been. The writer was trying to make the point that they disagree with my stand on an issue but instead of elaborating their views, it was pretty much buried under insults against my character and methods.

There’s another writer who occasionally takes exception to what I say but he always masks over his views with his hatred for me or people who think like I do. He doesn’t even ask that we publish his letters and we willingly oblige.

There’s another writer who is always condemning a particular ag industry.

He throws out claims about the industry but rarely backs them up with facts or studies.

Every industry has its downside and every industry causes some damage to the environment. There should be no tolerance for willful ignorance or willful damage. But to hear some critics, one would assume, for example, that hogs and oil are dirty industries, while ignoring that spent wind turbines can’t yet be recycled and are being cut up and buried in landfills. Overall solutions need to be looked at for every industrial endeavour, in fact every human endeavour, and make sure we know the consequences from start to finish.

In contrast to the above three writers mentioned, people say, “That Leonard Paramour guy, he really gives you a hard time. Why do you publish his stuff, anyway? He really doesn’t like you.”

That perception, as some people are surprised to find out, is totally wrong.

Leonard and I agree on many things.

We have known each other and have been friends for the best part of 50 years.

And, no, we don’t agree on every item, but we do both staunchly defend the idea

Ken Waddell that opinions are opinions and they need to be expressed. I have no intention of squelching opinions, but when people don’t, or won’t, be reasonably nice about it as per the examples above, those insult wrapped opinions aren’t likely to see the light of day in the paper.

Lately, people have taken to phoning our politicians, and worse yet, their staff and expressing hatred and vitriol to towards them. I have said it before, that’s not acceptable. I slipped up earlier this year and spoke inappropriately in the presence of a hospital staff person. I felt badly and went back later in the day and apologized. They graciously accepted my apology and for that, I was thankful.

Anyway, this morning I was doing some math and this column is one of about 1,650 I have written. I have likely annoyed everybody somewhere at some

point in time. If I have slipped into the insult mode, I apologize.

The point is, if we don’t have vigorous and active discussion, we won’t make any progress at all. We are making progress for sure. The world is a better place to live, grow and thrive, at least from a prosperity and health point of view than it was 50 years ago. Certainly it is better than 100 or 200 years ago. It has been said that life in the 1800s and early 1900s was cruel, brutish and short. We have made progress and one of the key factors in that progress is having vigorous and active discussion. And it’s a whole lot better when we leave the personal insults out of it.

The environment from a Christian’s view

With millions of followers, environmentalism has, in my view, become a new religion. One of it’s most recent and well known proponents is a young Swede by the name of Greta Thunberg, whom, several years ago at the age of 15, gained national notoriety by going on strike outside the Swedish Parliament. Greta’s mission was to condemn those who abused and polluted the earth, and for her crusade on climate change, she was named Time magazine’s person of the year in 2019.

Though not as visible nowadays, the cause goes on, and incredible as it sounds, people have even started blaming climate change for criminal activity. With that in mind, I thought I would throw in my two cents starting with the first verse of the Bible: •Genesis 1:1 - “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

After describing the order of creation in six days, chapter one ends with God declaring that everything He made was very good; and indeed it was. Chapter two reveals the paradise He created called the Garden of Eden. It was here that He placed Adam and Eve to subdue the earth and have dominion over all living things. But everything went awry in chapter three when they disobeyed God, leading to their banishment from the garden and a curse put upon the earth.

Since then, the entire creation has been groaning for redemption. (Romans 8:18-23). The Bible also says everything belongs to God: •Psalm 24:1 - “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.

The dominion man was to have over the earth was delegated by God; we are entrusted with the earth and are responsible for how we use it. We have been

given the right to farm the land, mine for resources, cut down trees and use animals for work and food.

God has given us all things to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17); but we are to do so in a responsible way by being good stewards. We were given a great privilege when God placed us on this beautiful planet.

In the Old Testament, the Israelites were commanded to enjoy but not abuse the land He had given them as an inheritance. In fact, after six years of working the land, they were to let it rest on the seventh (Leviticus 25:1-7). Fields were not to be planted and vineyards were not to be pruned or harvested; only what the land produced naturally was to be eaten.

Foreigners and the poor alike were also allowed to partake of any food produced during this time. But the Israelites didn’t heed the command which resulted in dire consequences. Abuse of the land has been ongoing for centuries and the main reason is greed. Deforestation is occurring on a massive scale and farmland is being over cultivated all for monetary gain, both of which have immediate and long term effects. Lands that are stripped of vegetation can no longer act as sponges to absorb water, resulting in f looding.

I know many share my love for nature, but there are some who take it to the next level and let it become all consuming; literally a source of idolatry. Those who believe that God is in everything and everything is God belong to a group called pantheists, but may also identify with the New Age movement. The Bible says there is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9), and the worship of nature is most certainly nothing new. In the Old Testament the Israelites, who were to worship God alone, adopted the practice of idolatry

from neighbouring cultures. Imagine, God’s chosen people worshipping the sun, moon and stars along with trees. God addressed the insanity regarding a tree in Isaiah: •Isaiah 44:15-17 - “He will take some of it and warm himself. He kindles it and bakes bread then he makes a god and worships it. He makes a carved image and falls down to it. He burns half of it in the fire and warms himself. And the rest of it he makes a god, prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god.”

I know this may sound like nonsense, but there are millions who continue to bow down before images or statues that can do absolutely nothing. They, along with all of us, need to know that it is God alone who gives life; more specifically through His son, Jesus Christ.

•John 1:3,4 - “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.

In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.”

Of course I care about the environment, but more importantly, I care more about where people are going to spend eternity. I want you to be in Heaven when your time is done here on earth and there is only one way that can happen - by putting your trust, faith, hope, life and love in Jesus Christ. I beg you, do it before it’s too late.

hose days last week took me back, way back, to when I was but a youth. The memory crystalized when I was working in the mid afternoon shade, not in the sun, but in the shade. The task was not arduous, however, the sweat dripping down my forehead was causing my eyes to burn. It was sweat, no lady-like perspiration or breaking bead, plain, eye-burning sweat. I was working outside by choice, getting some jobs done so the evening would be free to be enjoyed.

The memory was of work performed by duty– baling.

Square bales, hard lifting, heavy, steady work. My father did custom baling, a faithful 8N tractor, and a not so faithful Massey baler. We took turns driving the tractor and manning the sledge– a contraption of two planks co-joined front and back on which a series of bales would be stacked before, with a firm heel and a heave, the stack would slide off to rest in the field.

Repeat procedure, repeat all day. Some days it was too hot in mid-afternoon, the leaves would drop from the alfalfa, and they contained the best nutrients. So it was not for the humans that we paused, but for the product. Those days, the work would continue late into the night, a welcome relief, however, hand signals

from driver to sled runner were of no avail in the dark, and a loud ‘whoa’ would have stopped a horse, but not a hard of hearing tractor driver! Oh, the fun we had…I did get paid, a cent a bale. I don’t know what dad charged the farmers, but I am certain that he profited from my labour!

The memory f litted to the uniform. It was a time when we wore canvas sneakers for working. They wore thin. The clover stubble could penetrate and pierce a foot. It was a relief when a hole appeared, for that meant some ventilation. My feet frequently developed heart blisters on the soles. My jeans became very fashionable, delicately shredded denim, only this was not an asset. The mending was much appreciated, for the legs needed to be covered for protection from the stalks of that hardy clover, and from the crisp straw.

Hot, heavy work.

I do treasure the memories, for I learned a great deal by working, by working hard, and by working with my father. When it was side by side working, fencing or shearing for example, he took breaks to philosophise on history or current events. “What do you think?” required a mature answer. He wanted to know, and then enlighten, expand my thoughts. There was the satisfaction of a job well done. The finished project.

With that baling, our finished product would be a stack 40 bales long and twelve or more high, gracefully tapered to shed moisture, and carefully formed to hold its shape. A thing of beauty. One strong memory that surfaced, with still a hint of rancour, was a summer night we were baling the back 40 and could see on the east horizon the fireworks concluding the Carman Fair. The sting? My sister and her beau were there, and I wasn’t!

W

hen I look out my window, I see some threatening cloud formations forming just west from my home. The hot spell we encountered has now passed and we are getting more seasonal temperatures.

The farmers were very happy with the rain we got and the hot weather warmed up the ground and the vegetable gardens are now thriving.

Even though nature is following its course, it seems that the world is in a terrific amount of turmoil. However, when I search the Bible, there were many times of fierce battles and many lives were lost. When I read the Book of Ester, I noticed that they were trying the eliminate the Jewish people. However, God took action and they were spared.

I remember that in WWII, we saw the same thing.

However, God preserved the Jewish generation and even today, God is listening if we seek Him. When humbling ourselves and turning from the wicked ways, God will hear and will forgive and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Let us seek God in prayer this week.

The diamonds are there to be used and we want them used, but honestly anyone who thinks it's fun to damage things is nothing but a loser. So I hope you had fun.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am pretty level-headed most of the time, but I am mad, and I am not letting the 24-hour rule filter this. There are so many volunteers that have done so many great things out there, but it amazing how certain individuals are wired.

In the past few weeks, someone has driven a bike on Tempo Field, as well as drove around the barricade by the shale pile, where we are trying to get the grass ready to build another small diamond for tee-ball kids.

All I ask is you respect the ballpark, I referred to it in a conversation this week as my third child, and that is how I feel about So like I said, I hope you had fun, now I will glow clean up your fun.

Climate clip #3 Meet the grads

Climate changes with or without man's help. Over thousands of years records have been kept through oral history, written letters and histories and in modern times with sophisticated thermometers and satellite readings.

To show this interesting fact we will be looking at the last 4000 years and learn that temperatures are not static, in fact they are quite erratic. What is interesting to learn is that warm periods coincided with societal advances and cold ages coincided with societal regression. Have a look at the following information.

2000 BC – the Bronze Age - COLD – Both the Indian Harappa civilization and the 14th Egyptian dynasty collapse – called the Egyptian Dark Age. 1500 BC -the Minoan period – WARM - Wheel invented, writing developed, metal smelting, wine making.

Storms lessened, mountain passes opened up increasing trade. Large cities developed, Greek and Egyptian cultures begin. More food grown, less hunger.

1000 BC – the Greek Dark Ages – COLD - Mycenaean civilization, Hittite empire, Egypt under pharoah Takeloth all collapse. Droughts in the Americas, India, Europe, Africa, China. Shang dynasty falls, Yellow River freezes; tree line of the Alps moved lower, European temperatures dropped 1–2 degrees Cent., Crop failures,a mere existence. Europe depopulates - called the “Hallstatt Disaster”.

300 BC – the Roman period - WARM – Ch'in unifies China, Roman empire flourishes, roads built throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, trade expanded, olives and grapes grow in England. Advances in math, philosophy, arts, agriculture. Expansion of society across Europe and Asia. Climate hotter than our present one leading to plenty of food across the globe.

500 AD – the Dark Ages – COLD - Migration of Goths, Huns, Vandals south.

Roman empire breaks apart, great violence. Over Europe extreme cold, crop failures, starvation, 1/3 of European population dies in 784. Black Plague killed leaving Europe in a rural/peasant existence.

People merely survived, and civilization stagnated.

1000 AD – the Medieval period – WARM - the Great

Awakening. Warm temperatures saw enough comfort and crop success to foster an intellectual renaissance, to see universities founded, the Magna Carta signed.

Vikings settled in Greenland and Newfoundland. Great cathedrals were built, trade developed across continents using oceans previously frozen, society thrived.

1250 - 1850 AD – the Little Ice Age – EXTREME COLD - severe hardship especially in northern latitudes.

The Black Death in 1348 and Great Famine 1315-1321 killed multitudes, glaciers advanced destroying settlements; the Baltic Sea and Thames river froze over. Persecution of Jews and witches rose dramatically.

50,000 witches were burned by 1600 and tens of thousands of Jews were massacred - 'they' needed to blame 'someone' after all. There was continual war around the globe. From 1777-1778 George Washington's army suffered through the severe cold at Valley Forge with many soldiers dying from disease, exposure and starvation.

1850 AD – present – Modern period – WARM - Great advances in food production, technology, science, medicine, exploration, transportation,energy development. Average life expectancy doubled There is a very interesting chart and article by meteorologists Randy Mann and Cliff Harris, updated January 10, 2021 in which he makes a good case for the following premise.”Whenever Solar radiation has dramatically decreased and major Volcanic activity has increased global temperatures have dropped.”

They contend that there have been 78 major temperature swings in the last 4,500 years including 2 since 1970 that have affected earth's climate because of these two natural factors.

The temperature cycles show that man-caused global warming (anthropogenic global warming) is not the issue, but learning how the earth works is. The data is the same for both sides. It is how the data is interpreted that makes a difference in ones outlook.

Professor Wolfgang Behringer (professor at the University of Saarland in Saarbrucken) from his book “A Cultural History of Climate” stated: “...cooling has always resulted in major social upheavals, whereas warming has sometimes led to a blossoming of culture. If we can learn anything from the history of culture, it is that, even if humans were 'children of the Ice Age; civilization was a product of climatic warming.”

“The future is hard to foresee. Serious scientists should refrain from slipping into the role of Nostradamus. Computer simulations cannot be better than the premises that guided the input of data: they show what is expected to happen not the actual future.* The history of the sciences is also a history of false theories and wrong predictions.” * We used to call this garbage in; garbage out Psalm 147:8 – “Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who provides rain for the earth, Who makes grass to grow on the mountains.”

It is loopholes such as this in our judicial system that got me wondering how could someone be repeatedly convicted of heinous crimes against children and continue to get out of prison only to reoffend again? Was the public notified when he was released? Or was he simply able to walk out the prison doors, return to daily life and find his next victim? With his past offences, why was he not designated a Dangerous Offender long before he abducted Zach?

The designation “dangerous offender” is reserved for Canada’s most v iolent criminals and sexual predators. Crown attorneys can seek the designation during sentencing and must show that there is a high risk that the criminal will commit violent or sexual offences in the future. I think it is so important for more designations to be given to more dangerous offenders like Peter Whitmore, and for the public to be more aware that people like him are out there.

I decided to tr y to lobby the government to change the dangerous offender designation. But how does one go about lobbying the government in the first place? How do I write a legal petition?

What are the rules and regulations? How old do you have to be to create a petition to lobby the government? How should I word it? Those were just a few of dozens of questions I needed answers to.

My first step was to find out what the process is to write and file a petition and decide whether or not I should create a paper or electronic petition, how many signatures I need etc. I

also learned that there is no age limit on how old you must be to write a petition.

My petition was online for 90 days, and on the day that it closed I had received 1,396 signatures from all across Canada. I had received support from every single province and territory. I was overwhelmed with gratitude for every person who took the time to show their support for my petition. Not only for the support of the people who signed my petition but the many newspapers and news outlets that took an interest in and covered my story. I was interviewed by local reporters, Provincial reports and even was interviewed live on the CTV National News.

It is still hard to believe the support I received.

Although I am grateful for all the media interest in my petition, what is truly remarkable to me is the number of child sexual abuse survivors who reached out to me to thank me for giving a voice to the subject and lobbying for change. That makes me feel extremely proud!

When I received the response to my petition on Dec. 11, 2020, I was more than disappointed.

They gave a rather token political response. Their response was basically that there is already a section of the code that deals with Sexual Interference, missing the intent behind the proposed amendment completely.

“Although I was disappointed in their decision not to make an amendment to that portion of the criminal code, I believe that all the attention that my petition got across Canada started a much-needed dialogue about child sexual abuse.

4-H BENEFICIAL Beyond her years, the 17-year-old daughter of David and Val, has been involved with 4-H for 11 years, and has found the youth movement has indeed impacted her life.

Caldwell said experiences on various fronts, under the guidance of head leader, Candace Tolton, have brought about positivity from a club and personal level.

“Being involved has allowed myself to overcome shyness and increase my confidence, and hone my public speaking skills,” shared Caldwell, who enjoys farm life with her parents near Harding.

“4-H has also enabled myself to give back to my community in so many ways, and has opened doors to experience on a local, provincial and national level.”

She has been the recipi-

ent of the Jean Gompf Memorial Trophy f ive t i mes. T he t rophy is awarded to t he Kenton Kraftsmen member who goes the furthest at ‘speeches’, which is criteria of being involved in 4 -H. Caldwell was also the 4-H Gold Watch Award winner in 2020 and recent ly was t he recipient of the South Parkland Bursary.

Along with being one of six youth presently en rol led i n t he club, Caldwell is also the Junior Chair of the South Parkland Area Council and sits as a Youth Advisor on the 4-H Manitoba Provincial Board of Directors.

It can be said that Caldwell truly stands behind the 4-H slogan. The four H’s stand for “head, heart, hands and health” and as part of the 4-H pledge, members vow to use these four things for the betterment of “my club, my community, my country and my world.”

Based on her personal achievements and growth since the age of six, the words “my self ”, could easily be added to the slogan, as Caldwell is one of the most highly respected positive role models a club and community, could ask for. A role model who cherishes uplifting the 4-H Motto … “Learn To Do By Doing”.

Water safety tips for safe summer swimming from the Canadian Red Cross

June 5-12 is National Water Safety Week. The sun is shining, the heat is rising, and it’s time to enjoy all the fun that summer has to offer. But before taking the plunge at the lake or in your backyard pool, the Canadian Red Cross wants you to keep water safety at top of mind.

“Young children, between the ages of one and four, are particularly at risk of drowning,” explains Lynn Kolba, Canadian Red Cross swimming and water safety representative. “A high percentage of these water-related fatalities are preventable. The more aware we are of possible dangers around bodies of water, the better we can prepare, prevent, and enjoy.”

Keep these water safety tips in mind this summer.

1.Active supervision •The absence of adult supervision is a factor in most child drownings.

•Whether it’s a pool, the bathtub, a water park, or the beach, always watch children actively around water—even if they can swim.

•Consider requiring all nonswimmers to wear a lifejacket to keep them at the surface to assist you while supervising.

2.Backyard pools •Backyard pools are especially dangerous for small children.

Ensure adequate barriers are in place such as four-sided fencing (recommended at least 1.2 m in height, with gaps no

larger than 10 cm), along with a self-closing, self-latching gate.

•Empty portable toddler pools after each use.

3.Bathing children •When bathing infants or toddlers, an adult should always remain with the child.

Children should never be relied upon to supervise other children in the bath.

•When a child is in the bathtub, never leave to answer the phone or for any other momentary distraction.

4.Diving •Diving head-first into water should be avoided unless the individual is properly trained and is sure that the water is deep enough.

•Avoid diving in home pools and always enter the water feet-first.

5.Open water •Be cautious about swimming in currents.

•If you become caught in a river current roll onto your back and go downstream feetfirst to avoid hitting obstacles head-first. When you are out of the strongest part of the current, swim on a forward angle toward shore.

“Swimming and paddling to cool off from the heat are some of the great pleasures of summertime,” says Kolba.

“Understanding safety issues around water, preparing for possible emergencies, and remaining diligent when supervising children help can keep everyone swimming safely.”

New vaccine lottery to encourage immunizations for all eligible Manitobans

The Manitoba government is launching a new provincewide lottery that will award nearly $2 million in cash and scholarships this summer to encourage Manitobans to get fully vaccinated as soon as possible, Premier Brian Pallister announced today.

“Vaccination is the fastest way to overcome COVID-19 and safely restore our services and activities,” said Pallister. “Urgency is important. We need Manitobans to get vaccinated to protect each other and protect our hea lth-care system. The sooner we get vaccinated, the sooner we can get our lives back. This lottery gives Manitobans even more reasons to roll up their sleeves – not once, but twice.”

Manitoba will hold two lottery draws over the summer. All Manitobans aged 12 and up who have received at least one dose of vaccine on or before Aug. 2 will be eligible for the first draw. All Manitobans aged 12 and up who have received two doses on or before Sept. 6 will be eligible for the second draw.

Each lottery draw will award: •Three prizes of $100,000 in the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (excluding Churchill); •A $100,000 prize in each of the remaining regional health authorities: Prairie Mountain Health, Souther n He a lt h – S a nt é Sud , Interlake–Eastern Regional Health Authority and Northern Regional Health Authority (including Churchill); and •10 draws for $25,000 scholarships for young people aged 12 to 17 across the province, for a total of $250,000.

All people who have been immunized with either a f irst or second dose are automatically eligible and will be entered into the lottery for a chance to win. A process has been put in place to ensure all information used for the purposes of the draw is protected and secure.

Each draw will be held once eligible immunizations administered as of the lottery deadlines have been entered in the provincial database.

Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries will be responsible for conducting the lotteries and a third-party auditor will prov ide addit ional oversight.

“Trust and accountability are an integral part of every lottery, and we will ensure that all Manitobans can have confidence in the fairness and integrity of this process,” said Manny Atwal, president and CEO, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. “As we have seen in other jurisdictions, lotteries can act as an incentive to encourage vaccination. We are proud of our role in the goal to get as many Manitobans immunized as quickly as possible.”

This includes setting out how Manitobans who were vaccinated outside of the province may ensure their e l i g ibi l it y by r e p or t i n g their vaccination to a public health off ice. Any Manitoban who wishes not to be part of the lottery may opt out via a simple process to be outlined in the near future.

The way I see it - As health care worms turn

Healthcare is the most important (and the most expensive) service provided by the Government of Manitoba. Numerous studies of Manitoba's health system have concluded that Manitoba's system is overly complex and, in many cases, acts as a barrier to effective and efficient delivery of services.

Regional health authorities were created in 1997 to better manage health care services closer to the patient.

The number and types of health care providers needed to provide care have changed over time - but the health care system has not modernized in response.

Between 2003 and 2016, health care funding rose by 97 per cent. These significant increases in health care funding have not resulted in significantly improved health outcomes, and Manitoba remains at or near the bottom of national rankings in a number of categories.

Today, we have eight independent health delivery organizations - the five regional health authorities, Diagnostic Services Manitoba (DSM), Cancer Care Manitoba (CCMB) and Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM).

Each of these organizations plans health services in relative isolation from one another, leading to duplicate services and inefficient service delivery while acting as an impediment to the development and implementation of a clinical services plan for all Manitobans.

Now is the time to align how health-care services meet the needs of Manitobans. These transformative changes will strengthen health care in Manitoba and build a sustainable system for the future.

Transformation Leadership Team A Transformation Leadership Team has been established, including representatives from across the health system. The team is prioritizing transformation initiatives and making recommendations on governance and policy development.

links to both rural and urban health organizations, as well as to strengthen knowledge across preventive, clinical and business health domains. The team's membership may evolve as the transformation progresses and as a governance model is finalized.

Winnipeg Regional Health Authority The elites listed above all have one common denominator; they are political animals appointed by fellow political animals further up the food chain. Criteria for appointment place connections to the front line staff who deliver services secondary to the ability to fit in with the organizational hierarchy.

That doomed Shared Health to failure.

Another critical factor is that governments cannot operate any essential service, particularly nothing as complex as health care. Governments have no skin in the game and are not accountable for their decisions.

Our health care system has collapsed under coronavirus pressure. That is what Shared Health was created to prevent.

The fail is staggering, and our government is whining for outside help instead of recognizing it has a massive health care problem on its hands and seeking solutions.

No one in government or on the list above will suffer any consequences from the failure.

We need to change our approach and allow private-sector delivery of health care services. Without another model for comparison, health care costs will continue to rise rapidly while service delivery remains mediocre.

The usual suspects will start ranting about the evils of a two-tiered health system and make spurious claims about private health care delivery.

They have won the debate so far, and thanks to the Shared Health initiative, we have a reformed public health care system that was dead on arrival and failed Manitobans in a time of dire need.

We need a fresh start.
