The past, a good place to visit, poor place to live

O

ur knowledge of history, or more precisely, our lack of knowledge, has come around to bite us big time.

Take Bishop Grandin Boulevard in Winnipeg. I have studied a lot of history, ever since my school days in the 1950s and ‘60s. I can actually remember well over 60 years of history. That’s what happens when you get older. That said, I hardly knew Bishop Grandin existed before the south Winnipeg highway was named after him. A quick check on Wikipedia shows, “Venerable VitalJustin Grandin (8 Feb. 1829 - 3 June 1902) was a Roman Catholic priest and bishop that dedicated his life in the defense of the rights of native North Americans[1]. He served the Church in the western parts of what is now Canada both before and after Confederation. He is also the namesake or cofounder of various small communities and neighbourhoods in the Province of Alberta, Canada– especially those of francophone residents.”

He felt that the traditional lifestyle of Canada’s Indigenous people was going to end in extinction. He promoted residential schools. Whether his inten-

tions were honourable or not, many aspects of the residential schools idea became a disaster.

As we go through an ongoing review of our past mistakes, I am appalled by people who hate studying history but are shocked when their lack of knowledge of that same history ambushes them. I like history and studying history is to know what shaped our country and why we do the things we do.

We need to study our history and, more importantly, learn from our history. If we don’t, we will keep on tearing huge holes in our social fabric as we repeat the mistakes of the past. There are realities that we need to recognize.

All our past leaders had good points and bad. Some of the bad stuff was intentional. Some was by accident or f lowed out of ignorance. Those realities applied to all leaders, at all levels and in all groups.

We need to study our history with a view to learning from it. Here’s some examples. Our first prime minister, John A. Macdonald, was an ambitious visionary. Without his vision and drive, we would all be deciding today if we were Democrats or Republicans.

Ken Waddell Check it out, it’s true. We almost didn’t make it as a country. Macdonald was an alcoholic. It’s been joked that if his statues drank as much as he did, they would fall over on their own. In the course of his very long political career, he also did some very sketchy things.

Look it up.

His most famous successor, Wilfred Laurier, was far from perfect. Louis Riel was a great visionary, a man of strong Catholic Christian faith. He did great things and some bad stuff too.

You can review the whole history of Canada and not one person, not one, is totally pure. Whether it be motives or actions, there were f laws. I face my own f laws every day, it’s a struggle. A country is no different.

God gives us a new day every morning and we need to both examine and honour our past, as individuals and as a nation. In so doing, we will learn from the past so we have a better future together. We need to engage with each other, learn from each other. Bickering, yelling, burning churches, tearing down people or statues only hinders us as we proceed.

Let’s learn from our past, the good and bad, and then live abundantly in the present so that we can have a future.

Climate Clip #6 part 2

On Saturday night, June 19th, I tuned into the BBC to watch a program called “Rising Tides” in order to learn how to escape from a flooding car. Before I could learn about the car I had to endure a lecture about how climate change might be responsible for the eroding beaches of eastern Australia with the result that many houses were toppling onto the beaches. Then the camera panned over the area the host was discussing – so interesting.

There were million dollar houses, built cheek by jowl, sliding off their foundations onto the beaches just as the host had said.

But what he did not say was that they were built on sand cliffs!

There was no rock, no clay support, just cliffs of sand which were yielding to the pounding of the surf. Had the BBC forgotten the power of water? Or the properties of sand It reminded me of a vacation taken in the Barbados many decades ago. The south side of the island where the resorts were had a calm, turquoise sea which was like swimming in a bath tub. But when I was taken to the eastern shore away from the towns I saw another side of the Atlantic ocean.

From a high cliff one could see a beautiful sandy beach cove with the eastern Atlantic pounding the shore. First thought was to slide down and play in the surf but then the sound of the water hit me – it was thundering. As I looked more carefully the waves were high, moving very fast and piling up and over each other – what power!

Same island, same week, same weather – hot, sunny, azure blue skies – very different water action. So there were forces at work there that produced different results in the same small part of the world.

These variances of surf power are not new. There was a small coastal village in Israel called Tel Hreiz that waged a multi year war against the sea’s incursion by piling huge boulders up one on top of the other to make the world’s oldest sea wall. Tel Hreiz was 2.5 meters above sea level at the time. Archaeologists estimate

that time at 7000 years ago, at the end of the ice age. That sea level was rising at the rate of 4 mm/year because of the glaciation melt that we discussed in Part 1. Fighting the ocean’s tidal and coastal waves is not a new phenomena. Funny, despite all that historians have learned, we cannot seem to learn from the past.

Here are some of the things that affect the cycle of rising and falling sea levels other than glacier melt.

Floods, seasonal sea level variations, storm surges, winds – for example west blowing equatorial trade winds can pile up an extra foot of water in the western Pacific compared to the eastern Pacific (think of that BBC show above), multi-decade oscillations such as the El Nino Southern oscillation, ocean current shifts, tectonic events like undersea volcanoes and earthquakes, subsidence and uplifts. Is the ocean rising or is the land sinking? Fresh water fluxes and pumping ground water cause soil compaction resulting in sinking land. Isostatic rebound in North America is tipping the north eastern coast of the States into the sea (see definition in Climate Clip #6, part 1).

Following are the results of some interesting studies: 2006 Larsen and Clark studied sea level over a period of many years showing no acceleration of sea level rise in response to increased temperatures or CO2 emissions.

2007 Holgate, using accurate world wide coastal tidal gauges, showed the rate of sea level rise to be cyclical but decreasing over the last century.

2011 Houston and Dean, using tidal gauges from 1930-2010, showed a balance between cycles of sea level rise and fall with an average of minus 0.0014 mm/year.

2013 Scafetta studied long term world wide tidal gauges representing all the world’s oceans. The rate of sea level rise was characterized by significant oscillation over decades at 110 year intervals.

So all the rise and fall of the sea is due to natural oscillations

of the climate system.

I said in Part 1 that there was encouraging news about coastal areas and low level islands that have supposedly been in danger of disappearing. The Australian government has been monitoring sea levels on the Pacific islands such as the Maldives, and Tuvalu since 1992 with sophisticated instruments. Except for a 1998 cyclone there has been no change at Tuvalu between 1994 and 2009.

In 2015 Kench et al. studied sea levels near 29 islands of the Funafuti Atoll. No islands were lost to sea level rise. Instead the majority have a 7.3% increase in net island area over the past century. There is no evidence of heightened erosion.

These low lying islands have the capacity to grow vertically when storm events bring extra water breaking over the top of the islands. This sounds counter intuitive – however, the ocean brings sediment from the reefs and beaches over the island surface and it settles, compacts and raises the height of islands like the Maldives. There is documented evidence of an increase of 0.3m in parts of the Maldives and Tuvalu as well as on other Pacific islands. Cause to rejoice, not mourn.

Local sea level rise and fall depends on local geology, the amount of ground water pumping in coastal areas and the cycle of weather patterns. It has nothing to do with CO2 emissions or increasing air temperatures.

Isn’t it strange that Obama, Kerry, Gates, Gore et al. have purchased multi million dollar seashore estates?

Will Durant once said, “Civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice.”

But let’s not be rational thinking individuals – let’s panic – much more useful politically.

Until a stray appeared on a day when our youngest was home alone. When she called, checking in, she mentioned that the dog looked hungry. Asked what she found to feed him, she sheepishly admitted she thawed a pound of hamburger, and ‘he really liked it!’

Joe Joe stayed. Joe loved truck rides, willing to stand on the roof of the truck for the perfect view of what lay ahead. He also has a penchant for porcupines… knew the drill, open the car door and head for the vet. We had to be rather careful with him, one quill seemed to have snuck under the skin of his nose and headed to the brain. A jar to the head caused seizures, and being a car chasers, there were some close calls.

Joe could tell time, waited for the school bus and his playmate every school day. Joe made the move from the farm to the acreage along with Flintstone, a border collie we inherited. They were great companions, learning to cross the highway by going through the culvert. There was the night the coyotes called him down the trail and he never returned. Good dog, life well lived and well loved.

Flintstone was with us for several years. He hated thunderstorms, could break down a door to get into the house. Gentle through and through, loyal to his first family and accepting of us as caregivers. Flintstone knew when it was Friday and the kids were coming out. One day, when he was old, he had an episode and we called a vet to help him across the river. It was an honour to dig his grave.

Henry Hoover did not suffer long. One morning, I knew it was his time to leave. His eyes were clear, and his message was as well. And this time, I cried, I cried ugly.

ost of you know how important my dogs are to me, how they enrich my life with unreserved love and affection, how their needs prompt me to be more active and alert than I may otherwise be. Henry Hoover and Miss Daisy were littermates, just turning 12 years old. It has been Miss Daisy that has needed the most care, has the most tummy troubles, has most food reactions, is the more reserved and is also the louder one. She joined our home months later than her brother and bonded with Ed, tolerated the rest of us. It was Hoover that needed to say goodbye.

I have had other dogs, farm dogs, dogs that I loved fiercely. You know that farm dogs have a job to do, and you know that they don’t live forever. Bo Jangles was an inside/outside dog, loved fig newton cookies and jelly beans– except for black ones. He had a repertoire of tricks and at the crinkle of a cookie or candy wrapper, he spun through them all and waited for a reward. His death was unwarranted, his body found in a far field in spring with a wire twisted around his neck. He did not deserve that, he never wandered or intruded, was kind and gentle.

Determined not to have another dog, we resisted.

I

t has been a week that will be remembered in history. Temperatures soared into the 40C in the western part of Canada and many people, especially the elderly, succumbed to the effects of the heat. The thought occurred what would happen if I would fall asleep in my chair and not wake up. It would be ok because I am ready to meet my Creator.

But we survived. The birds are coming out of their hiding places and are singing their songs in the trees. A fresh breeze is coming in through my open windows.

Another thought comes to mind where a whole town burned to the ground because of wildfires.

Not everyone has been accounted for.

Many people are still missing in Florida where part of an apartment complex collapsed.

We never know when it is our turn to meet our Creator. Are we ready? Have we settled our accounts here on earth with Jesus, family and friends?

Jesus tells us several stories in Luke 12 that we need to be ready to meet Him. He could come back at any time or could call us Home when not expected.

We need to be ready.

Manitoba COVID-19 milestone achieved restrictions to change in the near future Manitoba has achieved its second holiday vaccine milestone of the ‘4-3-2-One Great Summer’ reopening path nearly a month ahead of schedule, meaning more than 75 per cent of eligible Manitobans have received at least one dose and more than 50 per cent of people have received both vaccine doses, Premier Brian Pallister announced today, noting provincewide efforts to tackle vaccine hesitancy and encourage Manitobans to roll up their sleeves continue.

“Once again Manitobans have responded in record numbers to do their part to roll up their sleeve and get vaccinated,” said Pallister. “As we look forward to regaining more of our freedoms this summer as more and more Manitobans get fully vaccinated, the race against COVID is not over yet. We all have a part to play, and to anyone who still needs their first or second dose, I want you to know that we still need you in this monumental, provincewide effort.”

Public health officials have recommended that at least

one incubation period should pass between changing public health orders. As a result, the premier noted new public health orders are expected next week to reflect the immunization milestones achieved, and the state of COVID-19 in Manitoba at that time.

To help reduce barriers and support even more Manitobans to get their first or second dose of the vaccine, every super site in the province will be offering only walk-ins on Wednesday, July 14. More than 20,000 vaccines will be available including approximately 8,000 Pfizer vaccines earmarked for young people aged 12 to 17. There will be Moderna and Pfizer vaccines available at every super site.

“Our government has spared no effort to bolster vaccine availability and accessibility, and to give Manitobans the information and support they need to roll up their sleeve – not once, but twice – and get fully vaccinated,” said Pallister.

Chamber collects and dispenses cash

If you follow the Rivers and District Chamber of Commerce Facebook, Instagram or Twitter accounts, you will know we have been busy! The July 1-4 weekend we focused our attention on a virtual auction, the intent of which was to raise $1,000 to support our new scholarship. Online bids were accepted for items donated by nine of our 43 members. We were thrilled to exceed our goal, thanks to the generous shoppers in our district!

Besides raising money, we also gave away some.

We prov ided $200 in Chamber Bucks for a Canada Day decorating competition. This was another online event in which votes were accepted between July 1-4; entries that received the most votes won respective “cash” prizes.

At our January meeting, President Michelle Budiwski asked members to consider a graduation scholarship; five months later, membership approved the conditions set by the committee (Lorne Green, Kim Richardson and Michelle). The scholarship will be available to youth who reside, attend school and/or are actively involved within Riverdale Municipality borders and who will be entering business-related post-secondary studies.

Applications will be accepted until July 31; the scholarship will be announced on Aug. 31. If you know someone under the age of 21 who would qualify for this scholarship, please contact us to ask for an application form. And now, on with all our winners/highest

What will it take?

There is no real debate on this issue. The hottest years on record have been in the last 15 years. The glaciers, Greenland, the Arctic and Antarctic are all melting, we can see it happening. The temperature is rising outside our doors, we have no rain.

Does this feel normal to you? What do you think is going on? If you put heat trapping gasses into the atmosphere, these gases will trap heat.

We are in big trouble and we need to act! We

all eat and that requires rain. The Western United St ates i s i n a severe drought, as are we, and drought leads to fires. Remember the fires in Australia last year following months of severe drought.

Heat warnings and drought have stretched across Western Canada and it is only June. It is time to declare a war effort, to end the destruction of our planet. We need to act NOW! The oft-overlooked key to workplace success

What sets you apart?

I n a rapid ly evolv ing workforce, this question is key. But for young people, whose skill sets are generally homogenous as they navigate similar high school courses and come out with the same high school d iplomas, what sets them apart from their peers are often their soft skills.

How well can they communicate to co-workers and bosses? How professional are they in their timeliness and appearance? How do they deal with conf lict? And what type of decision-makers are they?

That final question is perhaps the most important. The decisions they make in the course of a day have the power to inf luence almost every aspect of their work and env ironment. A nd it’s the decisions they make that will determine their communication, professionalism, and conf lict management.

Yet there is a gap, noted by those who study youth unemployment, between education and these skills needed in the workplace.

Yout h are often expected to pick up soft skills on their own, either through their family or extracurricular activities.

That isn’t always possible, nor is it comprehensive.

Yet developing these soft skills, and giving all youth equal opportunity to learn them, is necessary. That’s why the Better Business Bureau Foundation is working diligently to offer LIFT to teens and young adults across Manitoba. LIFT is a free educational program that teaches participants how to engage critical thinking skills to make ethical decisions that will help them, their workplaces and their communities succeed.

With Manitoba’s youth unemployment rate hovering around 13 per cent, these skills have become more important than ever.

Many youth missed opportunities to develop and practise them during the pandemic, when sports, clubs, and in-person classes were suspended. Many also missed out on the value of entry-level, first jobs as businesses across the country were forced to cut back.

The province continues to show strong immunization numbers, as compared to other Canadian jurisdictions. Per capita, Manitoba continues to be first in the country in the total number of doses administered and percentage of eligible people aged 12 or older who are immunized at 129,111 per 100,000 and 51.1 per cent, respectively.

Community-led partnerships are continuing to help support the ongoing success of the province’s immunization campaign, the premier noted.

Earlier this week, Vidir Solutions held an immunization clinic in Arborg for its employees, their families and community members.

It provided nearly 200 doses of vaccine including many first doses.

The company supported the clinic with planning, worked with the regional health authority to line up immunizers, found volunteers to support on-site logistics, provided movies for young people being immunized and partnered with a food truck to provide everyone who was immunized with a small meal

afterwards. The company also developed vaccination stickers in a number of languages, to represent the many languages spoken by people working in their facilities.

To achieve the Labour Day immunization targets as set out in the 4-3-2-One Great Summer Reopening Path, about 33,000 more first-dose and 100,000 second-dose immunizations must be given. These are in addition to the more than 180,000 vaccine appointments already booked in the weeks ahead.
