Laura Gill RCC Riverdale Recreation Commission received a grant from Healthy Together Now (PMH) to construct a Crokicurl Rink for the Riverdale Community! This very Canadian game was the brainchild of Public City Architecture in Winnipeg, MB and was first introduced in Manitoba (and the world) in 2016 at the Forks.

Essentially, Crokicurl is a combination of curling, and the board game crokinole played outdoors on an ice surface. You can play in teams, or individually. The game is played on a largescale crokinole rink, with the objective of pushing custom made curling rocks to the button. Your opponent is tasked with the same objective and can try to knock its opposing team’s rock away from the centre button. or a number of reasons, I held off writing this column until Wednesday morning, which is really pushing the patience of our staff. The paper gets sent to print on Wednesday and we can’t be late. Printing presses are like trains, they are supposed to run on schedule.

I was hoping that we would have heard some better C-19 restrictions news two weeks ago and certainly by yesterday (Tuesday). The little that came out yesterday was, well, little. By the time you read this, we may know if barbers, hair dressers and some other small businesses can open up.

For the most part, the government has done a good job of handling C-19, albeit some of the actions have been missing and some have been misguided.

I guess that’s part of the learning curve.

If we are faced with another pandemic, and we likely will be, we should learn from this recent experience and past experiences. Certainly, we should be willing to move mountains to take better care of care home residents. At some point, the care home residents who died should likely have been hospitalized. I would like to know how many care home residents died in their rooms without the benefit of hospital care.

That, of course, raises the question of hospital and intensive care capacity

(ICU). Perhaps we need to be able to be prepared to quickly ramp up ICU and isolation capacity. There is a lesson to be learned from the tuberculosis pandemic, which went on for decades.

Sanitariums were set up and they were, for their day, a case study in isolation and personal care. The sanitariums were all shuttered and so was the mental hospital in Brandon. Probably other facilities could have been kept in emergency reserve. Perhaps we should be carefully mothballing facilities so we can have ICU and isolation facilities.

Several hospitals set up whole f loors for C-19, such as St. Boniface and Brandon. I know from personal experience, because I spent four days in each hospital and there were C-19 f loors in both places. Would it not be a good idea to have a dedicated pandemic facility in place? It is certainly feasible, but whether it’s affordable is another question. It’s worth a look, as the hundreds of millions of dollars that have been thrown at this pandemic has shown there’s no shortage of money if the need is great enough. It would seem that an isolation ICU would make sense.

As far as business closures are concerned, the often quoted irony of being able to buy pot but not get a hair cut or being able to have 250 people in Costco or Walmart but nobody in the

Ken Waddell dress shop has been a logistical and political disaster. The whole question of essential retail and non-essential retail has been a nightmare to defend and enforce. Quite simply, it shouldn’t have happened. And as to Walmart and Costco, had they been shut down, they would have hired the best lawyers and taken the government to court. The local barber can’t afford to do that.

People, and rightly so, compare the C-19 lockdowns, the stay-at-home rules and gathering limits to the WWII bombing of London. Our sacrifice is small compared to that situation.

I say, wear a mask when you go into a public place, wash your hands (Grandma told you that), use hand sanitizer, get lots of rest. That’s all good stuff. I think a lot of the spike in C-19 through November and December in Manitoba came from people not wearing masks when they went into groups of people.

We will be sorting through this process for years. One problem is the collateral damage will be very hard to measure. I am convinced that two people I know from a care home died of confusion and loneliness when their family or close friends couldn’t come and see them any more. Also remember that we have about 132 care homes in Manitoba and 80 or more did not get C-19. Some got it and recovery was full.

I sympathize with the government, but I do know this for sure. Governments, and Manitoba is really bad for this, don’t listen to their MLAs. That’s just plain wrong. The MLAs take all the crap, but it’s pretty hard to shoulder that responsibility when the premier and the officials aren’t listening. Quite frankly, I am not sure they are listening all that much to local care home staff either.

The message is simple, listen more.

The names of Jesus Christ - part three

This week brings to an end the names of Christ I wanted to share with you, and my list is far from being complete.

He is, after all, the Unnameable and Eternal One, whose glory and greatness defy description and definition.

Living Water: John 4:13,14 - “Jesus answered, “‘Everyone who drinks...water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” Just as life on earth cannot survive without water, we cannot have eternal life without Jesus Christ.

Lord: Acts 10:36 - “You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” Throughout the New Testament, Jesus is called Lord. Some say that being called Lord is no sign of Christ’s preeminence, as many have been given the name. But the Bible says He is The Lord of All, and He was given the title by God Himself. Acts 2:36 - “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

Lord of Lords: Revelation 19:16 - “On His robe and on His thigh He has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” Upon His second coming, Jesus Christ returns as both King and Lord to pass judgement on those who did not call upon His name.

Master: John 13:13 “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.” Jesus is to be our Master, and He says we cannot serve two of them - Matthew 6:24.

The Messiah: Matthew 1:1 - “This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”

Messiah is the Hebrew word for anointed one and Christ is the Greek word for the same. The Old Testament prophesied that God’s Messiah would come to offer salvation to sinners, and we’re all sinners.

The Prince of Peace: Isaiah 9:6b - “And He will be called...Prince of Peace.” Isaiah made this prophecy concerning the coming Messiah in the 8th or 7th century BC. Jesus brings peace in three ways: 1) He gives us peace with God - Romans 5:1. 2) He gives us peace within ourselves - John 14:27. 3) He brings world peace when He sets up His earthly kingdom - Isaiah 2:4.

Our Redeemer: Galatians 3:13 - “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us…”

By taking the punishment of God for sin upon Himself on the cross, Christ redeems sinners and reconciles us to God. The Righteous One: 1 John 2:1b - “But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father - Jesus Christ the Righteous One.” Because He lived a holy and sinless life, Christ offers His righteousness to us if we call upon His name, confessing Him as Lord and Saviour.

Saviour: John 4:42 - “...now we have heard for ourselves and we know that this man really is the Saviour of the world.” What has Jesus Christ saved us from? He has saved us from our sins, which, if not forgiven, allows God’s wrath to remain on us.

Shepherd: John 10:11 - “I am the good shepherd who lays His life down for His sheep.” Shepherding has been

around for centuries and still commonly practiced in some cultures. A good shepherd did what was needed to protect his sheep. Jesus Christ sacrificed His life to give His sheep eternal life. Read John 10:25-29.

The Son of God: Matthew 14:32,33 - “And when they climbed into the boat the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’” Calling Himself the Son of God, Jesus claimed a divine relationship to God; that He and the Father were one - John 17: 20-22. The Jews accused Him of blasphemy, which was the reason they crucified Him. Truth: John 14:6 - “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way, the truth and the light…’” Jesus didn’t just speak words of truth - John 18:37; He is truth.

The Word: John 1:1,2,14 - “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”

If you noticed that most of the verses are from the Gospel of John, there’s a reason for that. John convinces us that Christ is not only the Son of God, but God the Son, whose divine and human natures were perfectly united into one person who was the prophesied Messiah and Saviour. By Rita Friesen What do you want to be when you grow up?

H

ow many times have we been asked that question– and not only back when we were children? And how many times have we asked that question? Truthfully, I don’t like being asked that, nor asking.

There was a time when there were not that many career possibilities for young women, especially rural ones. We could be a teacher, a nurse, a secretary or marry. Usually a classmate or neighbour. It was back in the early ‘60s when my formal schooling ended and I have not kept in touch with all that many of my classmates. Many went into education– both men and women, and several women entered the field of nursing.

One, I discovered, became an airline stewardess, and one male classmate went on to become an air space controller. What fostered those dreams for my very rural classmates? Where did that idea find strength and courage to grow?

I am thankful that today there is many fewer limits on the career choices for all people. With all the choices available, another challenge appears. What do I want to be when I grow up? I can be anything– that is what we tell children– and how do I know if I

will like that field when I have completed an arduous and expensive, journey? From too few options to too many in 60 years!

When folks are kind enough to inquire where I grew up, I am careful to state that my early years were in the Carman area, a small hamlet known to few as Graysville. I do not to assume that I have grown up! Grown old, yes, but grown up assumes wisdom, maturity and solidness. The other day, as the soup in my bowl dipped below the easy spooning line, I lifted the bowl and drank deeply. My partner raised his eyebrows. I simply said, that to remain young at heart and joyous, we should take moments to be childlike. The reply– it seems to be working. Yes! I want to continue to embrace each day, to savour the moment, to breath and be.

What do you want to be when you grow up? One of my granddaughters printed her answer: “‘Why I want to be a babysitter’ This is why! I will tell you. I am just writing down to my self why I want to be a babysitter. A lot of people say– oh those people just want money. Hey– that’s 1 reason but not all. number 2. So I can teach kids things like read, learn colors, numbers. I know that’s what teachers do but i was thinking that we teach people thing every day so why cant I just teach more so there more intelligent. number 3 so that the parents can get away/go hang like we know its not easy. number 4 so that I can have fun to. That’s why I want to Be A Babysitter.’”

Now the spelling and punctuation isn’t all there, but the passion is! Whatever we find to do, may we do it with that same passion. Contented, joyful and useful– that’s what I want to be when I grow up.

T

he middle of January has passed. We are experiencing a bit more daylight and maybe some of you have already been looking through the seed catalogue to plan your spring garden.

However when I looked at some of the pictures from last week I saw that the streets in the Valley were worse than a skating rink. At first I thought it was water, but then realized it was all shining ice and for some it took a long time to get home. Others ended up in a ditch, not able to stay on the road.

It made me think of the road that we are traveling on in life. There is a wide road, which look very attractive but it is a dead end. In Matthew 7:13 and 14 Jesus tells us about the wide and narrow road.

The narrow road might have many obstacles, but when we come to the end and go through the gate we enter a place called Heaven. In Heaven there will not be any pain, sorrow or shedding of tears.

There is still room. Jesus told us in John 14:1 “My Father’s House has many rooms.”

T hat’s t he message government officials have preached for months, yet the COVID-19 situation has become more serious and grave as the death toll from the second wave shot up near the year’s end.

Some highly educated and experienced individuals didn’t heed the warnings. Several public figures and private citizens f louted the orders.

Some were apologetic, others were unashamed and defended their decisions.

Regardless of their reactions and motivations, the effect on Canadians remains the same.

It’s left some angry.

One Canadian mother was outraged to see some politicians jet off to sunny

vacations, after postponing her terminally ill son’s Make-A-Wish trip to Hawaii due to the pandemic.

Ot her Canad ians are confused. Many more feel betrayed, because they’ve made sacrifices for the greater good and they don’t feel those actions have been reciprocated.

Others are dismayed but understanding because, well, they’ve been skirting around the recommendations themselves.

After these emotions subside, lingering questions will remain: What goes into these types of decisions? How can we help people make decisions that benef it everyone? And, how do we expect the next generation to make ethical decisions if role models in their lives make unethical ones?

While it’s easy to say “X person did that because they’re self ish,” roll your eyes, and move on, that doesn’t serve any greater pur pose other

than blowing off some steam. It’s far more beneficial to imagine ways in which we can help each other make ethical decisions. A part of that is mentorship and speaking kindly and logically with others. Another part is educat ion, of fer ing courses that focus specifically on decision-making processes.

This type of course, one of which is already offered by the Better Business Bureau Foundation, will lay bare every step of ethical decision-making, and force people to confront the consequences of choices before they make them. It doesn’t allow people to ignore the elements with which they’re uncomfortable.

Additionally, obstructions like snowbanks can limit sightlines, making constant awareness of your surroundings more difficult. To counter this, slow down and emphasize seeing and being seen in your priorities. If you

can’t see around a corner, move slowly while covering the brakes. Be prepared to stop suddenly if another road user enters your field of vision suddenly.

Give yourself some time before leaving to check the weather conditions and consider canceling or delaying your trip if conditions appear to be worsening.

Should you be able to leave safely, clear your car of snow and ice before doing so — it’s more than a suggestion, it’s the law. Uncleared snow and ice can act as a projectile if it comes flying off your vehicle.

Winter tires The only thing between your vehicle and the road is your tires, making these a crucial consideration in your safety behind the wheel. During the winter months, the rubber compound in tires that are intended for the winter weather stays softer than other tires, improving trac-

tion and grip. They can also reduce braking distances by as much as 25 per cent.

According to a 2020 study done for the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada, 65 per cent of Canadian drivers are using winter tires. (This data does not include Quebec, where it is legally required.)

Winter tires wear out less in the winter weather than in the summer. All-season tires — the popular “alternative” option — sacrifice pliability and flexibility in the winter months. In a situation where a little extra grip is needed, winter tires will be able to provide it.

All-season tires will not.

Winter tires are absolutely a long-term safety investment and, while the hope is always that the extra safety features won’t be needed, you will be happy to have them when they are needed. Safety must be proactive, not reactive.

Winter tires should be installed when the weather drops below 7 degrees Celsius, as that is when they’re at their most effective. Be sure that your winter tires come as a matching set and have the three-peakmountain-and-snowf lake icon, designating that the tires meet standards to be classified as winter tires, stamped into the rubber.

Car maintenance Lastly, make sure your car is winterized and ready for the season. This includes a fully charged battery, a full windshield washer fluid reservoir, a functional heater and defroster and windshield wipers that can withstand the ice and snow without leaving large streaks.

It’s also a great idea to keep a few extra items in your car, including an ice scraper, a spare jug of windshield washer f luid and an emergency survival kit. This should include a charged phone, water and non-perishable food, a flashlight, a blanket, warm clothes, jumper cables, a shovel, traction mats or sand, candles and a book of matches or a lighter.

The winter months can be a tricky time to navigate the roads but patience, calm, preparedness and awareness will go a long way toward ensuring a safe winter driving season.

The premier noted the recommendations considered feedback from Manitobans about restarting services and activities. More than 67,500 responses were filled out between Friday, Jan. 15 and Monday, Jan. 18. Preliminary findings included: • 85 per cent of respondents strongly or somewhat agreed public health should use a regional approach to orders and restrictions; • 85 per cent of respondents strongly or somewhat agreed it is important the province reopen gradually, preventing a yo-yo return to restrictions in future; and • 80 per cent of respondents strongly or somewhat agreed it is important the health-care system is stable and able to meet the demands of the pandemic before restrictions are eased.

In addition, respondents listed: • the ability to shop without limitations (74 per cent), the ability to visit a stylist or barber (70 per cent) and the ability to visit health professionals (72 per cent) as somewhat or very important;

• the ability to gather with people from outside my household (77 per cent) as somewhat or very important; • the ability to have more people attend a funeral than the current five-person limit followed, with 65 per cent indicating this was somewhat or very important; • the ability to have more than five people attend a wedding was more split, with 49 per cent identifying it as somewhat or very important, and 29 per cent identifying it as not or not at all important; and • the ability to attend, in person, the house of worship of their choice was identified as important far less often than the others, with only 29 per cent identifying it as somewhat or very important and 50 per cent identifying it as not or not at all important.

A full analysis of the survey is underway and will be posted on the EngageMB website once completed.

Roussin noted that final public health orders will be introduced later this week to replace public health orders expiring Jan. 22.

IRVINE ANDERSON Irvin passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at the Rivers Westwood Lodge Personal Care Home with his three sons that reside in Rivers by his side.

Irvin was predeceased by his loving wife Louise, his parents Earle and Jean Anderson, his in-laws Gordon Vivier and Beatrice (Bob) Ross, his brothers Rodney Bourassa and Kenny Anderson, his inlaws Norm Fowler, Frank and Isobel Vivier, Lloyd and Aileen Vivier, Tom Cullen, his son-in-law Clifford Lavallee, his nephews Bobby and Lloyd (Trapper) Vivier, his niece Rita Vivier and his granddaughter Dana Kelli Anderson.

He leaves to mourn his passing and cherish many wonderful memories; his loving children Stacey (Vince) Anderson, Bud (Trudi) Cindy Lavallee, Gerry (Laura), Brock (Shelley), Bea (Brad) Denby, Earle (Tanya), Lance (Pam), Ray and a special family member Johnny Shannacappo, 29 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren, his brothers Vern (Shirl) Jess (Myrt), Conrad (Rosemary), his sisters Marie Fowler, and Iris, his sister-in-law Susie Bourassa, his inlaws Rita Cullen and Peter (Shelley) Hardes as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Irvin and Louise were married and raised their family in Reedy Creek for over 50 years. They sold the family farm and moved to Rivers in October 2005.

Due to the current health restrictions, a private family service will be held at a later date.

A very special and heartfelt thank you goes out to Dr. Dhaliwal and Dr. Vermaak along with the nurses and support staff both at the Rivers Clinic and Rivers Westwood Lodge Personal Care Home. We would like to extend a special thank you to all of the home care workers that took such great care of Dad while he was still able to stay at home before moving to the care home.

We can not leave out the Brandon Regional Health Centre, they helped our sweet dad through some very difficult times.

Dad is back with Mom and they are hand in hand once again.

Jan. 11: RCMP responded to a report of a person walking along the highway in the RM of Oakview not dressed appropr iately for t he weather. Police located the individual, who was found to have an outstanding warrant. The person was arrested and released with a future court date. Police received a report of an abandoned vehicle in Neepawa. After investigation, it was determined

to be have been stolen out of Winnipeg. The vehicle was towed and the owner was to be contacted by Winnipeg Police Service.
