An Update from Riverdale Municipality

Mayor Lamb and six Councillors were sworn in on 1 November forming a new Riverdale Municipality Council. Since then, the Mayor shared, “I had the privilege to lay a wreath on behalf of all three governments at the Remembrance Day service organized by the Legion. I also enjoyed participating

in the Christmas Parade riding in the fire truck. After the parade, I was given a tour of the fire department which gave me a better appreciation for their service, dedication and hard work they do for our communities.”

“I heard the idea at a meeting in Brandon. St. Augustine School had tried Fill a Canoe in conjunction with the 10-day Festival du Voyaguer in Winnipeg in February. It was very successful and whenever I hear food bank, my ears always perk up!”

She then brought the suggestion to Riverdale Harvest, which supported the idea and asked her to present the promo -

Context and capacity

As the calendar turned to another year I reflected on a few things. For example, this column is well over number 1,750. Seems like a lot of writing and hopefully a few words or phrases put on this page since October 1989 have been helpful to some people.

My wife and I moved to Neepawa in January 1971. We were just kids and had a kid. Another one came along late in 1971. Two boys and now the family has grown to a daughter-in-law, four grandkids, a grandson-in-law and three great grandsons. We were all able to be together on Christmas Eve and it was nice. A special spot in the day was when the 1 1/2 year old great grandson decided that he should climb up on the couch and show me what he was viewing on his child-sized tablet and I showed him some train videos on my I-phone. I don’t think I understood a babbled word he said but it was a special moment that I am not likely to forget.

I was talking to the 1971 version son this week and I said if he learned anything from me it should be that a degree of skepticism is important. Not cynicism but being a skeptic is OK. Every situation, story or legend needs to be questioned with a view about context and capacity. News coverage, or what mainstream media call news coverage, needs to examined with skepticism, evaluated and then the truth comes a little closer.

Let’s digress for a minute. This column is not news even though it resides in a

newspaper. It’s a column, an opinion piece, some would call it an editorial but it is not news. News appears on other pages and may be about the local council, a local sports team, a new construction project or, in some cases, a story about a disaster.

The problem we have today is that much of what is called news coverage is actually a mishmash of news mixed with bias and opinion. It’s hard to sort it out and keep the pieces separated. It’s almost impossible to separate as many, many news reporters put a large dose of their opinions in with the news. That’s just plain wrong and it’s why, in this newspaper, news is on the news

RIGHT IN THE CENTRE

have a full knowledge of conditions over the decades.

Just this week, reports of flooding in California were prominent in the news and there was legitimate grief over a couple of

droughts have caused the dry rivers and empty reservoirs. That could well be, but there’s another side of the story. Those now dry rivers and empty reservoirs have been drawn upon by millions more people and perhaps millions more acres of irrigation than they were ever designed for. The population of California in 1960 was approximately 15,700,000. In 2020 was 39,700,00. Do you think the additional 24 million people might be using a bit more water than was used in 1960?

pages and columns, editorials and letters to the editor are on the opinion pages.

Now, what about context and capacity? Often you will hear a newscast or read a news story that says road conditions are dangerous. During winter in Manitoba, that’s often the case. If a reporter says the “conditions are the worst I have ever seen”, that context is OK, as they are attaching the context to their personal experience. But if they say the “conditions are the worst ever,” that’s not OK, as they don’t

deaths. The deaths, as are all accidental deaths, were indeed sad. But context is important, as likely dozens of people die every day in California and never make the news.

Also, perhaps I missed the details, but the rain, snow and run-off in California will be doing some good to alleviate the endless stories about dry rivers and empty reservoirs in that state.

Then there’s capacity. We have been told for years that climate change and

It doesn’t matter what the news story or opinion piece is about, always view the context and the capacity with skepticism. I used to say to only believe half of what you see and none of what your hear.

That might be a bit too skeptical, but the point is evaluate everything. It will serve you well in wading through all the information that is headed your way.

Disclaimer: The views expressed in this column are the writer’s personal views and are not to be taken as being the view of the Banner staff.

Where do we begin?

Iwish media news reporters and analysts would stop trying to be mind readers-especially when it comes to guessing why some prominent government leaders make decisions or take aggressive actions that defy all forms of reason and logic.

The latest victim of these “mind readers” is Russian President Vladimir Putin. Now let me make one thing perfectly clear. I do not condone Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Nor do I support the on-going war that is being waged there.

But I have very little time for stories like the one I read online last week; in which a “senior Danish official” alleged that Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine was due to drugs he is taking to fight a supposed case of cancer. Those drugs, this official speculates, brought on feelings of omnipotence and grandeur (also known as megalomania) and impaired Putin’s ability to make wise decisions.

Now I have one question for this official-how do you know that this is so? The truth is that only two people (Putin and God) know why Putin verbally attacked Ukraine and its President and why he followed those verbal attacks with an armed invasion.

You and I cannot read minds. Nor does any one of us have a direct pipeline to God so that we can

ask and he will tell us why certain people do what they do. God is the only one who knows what goes on in a person’s mind. And he is the only one who knows how many of our thoughts have been turned into actions-whether good or bad.

One day every person who has ever lived on this earth will stand before God. He will look us in the eye and ask the same question he asked our first parents: “What have you done?” (Genesis 3:13) He will expect honest answers (because he already knows them) and we will be judged according to our words and deeds.

If we want to know who’s to blame for the problems our world is facing, all we need to do is look in a mirror; and we will see the image of someone who is at least partly responsible for them. It doesn’t really matter where we live. We are all trying, each in our own way, to learn how to survive and thrive in a hostile world.

Your daily challenges will differ from mine. But when dealing with them, we have only two options from which to choose. One is to try to solve them in our own way-using our own ideas, wisdom, resources and methods; even if that means we must engage in a little trickery and deceit at times.

Or we can seek the help of the one who created us, who placed us on this planet at this time in history and decided that we should live in this part of the world; surrounded by the beauty of nature and the abundant resources that exist above, on and beneath the surface of this part of the earth. Knowing that we would never survive on our own, God gave us an Operator’s Manual for Life. It never needs updating because the issues it addresses are the same as they were when its first words were put on paper.

God never intended that this manual (which goes by its familiar name-the Holy Bible) should sit on a shelf somewhere gathering dust. He asks us to read it and live by its teachings. If we want to change society, that is where we need to begin.

Home Bodies

It is not often that I am in the ‘in’ thing, the talked about thinking. There is a movement that I have become aware of – the woke movement. It’s a noun. Talking with my sister, I plainly asked her what this is. She sent me a list- Ten Symptoms of woke mind virus. 1. You read books, and don’t burn them. 2. You embrace science. 3. You are willing to change your mind when new information becomes available. 4. You understand that most issues aren’t black and white. 5. You believe in true equality for all people. 6. You like to share. 7. You embrace cooperation. 8. You respect others’ rights. 9. You believe culture and the arts has value. 10. You care for the planet and all of its life. Speaking with her children, they concluded it could be summed up as a definition of a decent human being! We did agree that number three can be challenging, and should be. I want to know from where this new information come, who found it, who said it, who backs it- that sort of important details. The topic has caused me to wonder how we, as a people, have moved so far from these basic concepts that being decent is radical. The topic built, for me, on my recent concerns that the general population has appeared to have lost a servant/serving heart. I

know the career choices out there are endless today compared to the ones open for us/me when I completed high school back in the early sixties. Then, out of our class of twelve, three went into nursing, two into teaching and several others went to university and I have lost track of what they achieved. Granted, to obtain a teaching certificate then required one year of normal school- that changed to two years shortly after- and to become an RN required two intensive years, usually at the Grace Hospital or the St. Boniface. And, in my opinion, that produced incredibly talented and gifted and dedicated, teachers and nurses. And then there is the career of spiritual ministry. Only one of my classmates went directly to a ministerial college, some have chosen ministry as a second career. Again, in my opinion, these careers require a serving/ servant heart.

Back to being woke….on social media one individual expressed concern that her health care would probably be given my a woke person. My question is –how that that be concerning!!!I want someone with these values to provide care for me, physically, mentally and spiritually. For me having these values is a positive game changer, not a concern. There are now mugs available with woke slogans. One I appreciate “ woke. Noun. 1. Alert to prejudice and injustice. 2. Not a prick.” I would like to order a dozen of these, please. How times have changed, in my lifetime. There used to be deep conversations around what makes a good person better, and how to help others deal with trauma and distress to become a better person. Now, we scrutinise good people? Again, it’s not often I am ‘in’, but by golly, I’m proud to be woke!

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful the passing of our Mom on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at the Rivers Personal Care Home. Katherine was predeceased by her husband Abe, in 2008; two infant siblings Katherine and Kane, brothers George and Dietrich, sister Anne and her parents George and Anna Klassen. Mom was born in Russia in 1925 and was only a year old when her family immigrated to Canada. They settled into farm life in the Plum Coulee and Myrtle area settling in Rivers in 1940. Katherine married Abe Wiebe in 1946, a marriage that lasted 62 years. In 1958 Mom decided to work outside the home, first cleaning houses and moving on to work in the dry cleaning business and from there she worked at Gilchrist’s Drug Store. She was employed by Canada Post for a few years but when work was no longer available in Rivers she went back to working in the Drugstore. Then in her early 50’s she decided to start her own painting business, retiring at 65. It was great to see the local businesses get together and celebrate the year they have come through and the anticipation of the year to come. It was a perfect evening

twice about saving your life and looking out for one another.”

Currently, Council and Administration are wrapping up finances for the year and will soon start the process of budgeting for 2023.

The Mayor shared, “we

will ensure to be diligent and fiscally responsible as we make sound decisions together, spending your tax dollars. As we use our resources wisely, we welcome community suggestions. In my opinion, in order for a community to

thrive, we need to be in unison with one another. Looking out for one another and working together will help achieve our success. Remember when one group in our community succeeds, we all succeed; when one group fails, we all fail. We are all in this together!”

The Riverdale Council meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of the month

with exception of July and August where they meet once per month, in the Municipal boardroom. This is an open meeting for all to attend with the exception of any incamera requirements during the meeting.

The Rural Municipality of Elton filed an Environment Act Proposal to expand and continue operating the existing Forrest wastewater treatment lagoon located at SW 31-11-18 WPM in the community of Forrest. The expansion includes construction of a new secondary cell to the east of the existing lagoon cells. The accumulated sludge will be removed and injected into the surrounding agricultural fields.
