The Fr iends of R ivers Lake are thrilled to receive $2,500 from the Westoba Cred it Union Inspire Program to create a public boat launch at Daly Beach. Friends of Rivers Lake Vice President, Lorne Green recognizes the impact COVID-19 has had on the community of Rivers and the timeliness of this financial support.

“With a world full of restrictions, the great outdoors has become a safe zone for everyone,” said Green. “Lake activities have become popular and access to Rivers Lake provides for safe recreation for families of the Westman area.”

Things that must end, things that should never have been

ast week, there was a story out about a lady in a care home who, even though she had been vaccinated, said she and her fellow residents were still largely confined to their rooms. That doesn’t make any sense. If the C-19 vaccine doesn’t protect people, then why on earth is it being so heavily promoted? If it does protect people, then why would vaccinated care home residents be confined to their rooms?

We also hear a lot of prattling about how vaccinated people still must be careful about getting C-19 or spreading C-19, wear a mask etc. That’s utter nonsense. It needs to stop.

Among other things that must end, and should never have been, is the uneven restrictions on businesses. All, and I mean all, businesses should be allowed to be open at 50 per cent capacity. That’s the way it always should have been.

Look at last week’s ridiculous example from the Brandon vaccine centre. By the way, in person reports are that both the Brandon and Winnipeg centres are going fairly smoothly, in spite of daily stories in the Winnipeg Free Press about how bad things are going, but that I will deal with below. So at the vaccination centres, you make an appointment, you

line up, you answer questions, you wear a mask, you keep your distance, yada, yada. But, after you leave, you can go to Walmart or Costco and cram into a building with 100s of other people. It’s utter nonsense, that’s what it is.

Ok, I get the mask thing. Go into a business, wear a mask. It’s the right, respectful, sensible thing to do. But social distancing is highly overrated, especially for short encounters There is another thing that makes no sense. A church might have a C-19 allowable capacity of 100 or 200 or more.

But, for a funeral, they are restricted to 25. It makes no sense at all.

The problem is if you put bureaucrats in charge, you get a lot of rules. Some make sense and some do not.

Another thing that doesn’t make sense is the constant haranguing by the Winnipeg Free Press against our Manitoba government. Last week, they slammed Manitoba and Premier Pallister for doing a poor job with C-19.

The problem with that slam is that Manitoba did as well as, or better than, many other places. If we are going to blame a government for handling C-19 badly, let’s get the facts straight. The federal government didn’t get vaccines

RIGHT IN THE CENTRE

Ken Waddell soon enough, didn’t close airports soon enough, didn’t restrict travel soon enough. None of that was any province’s fault. Manitoba fell short, especially in protecting care home residents, but certainly no worse than any other province.

It’s a sad thing, but two of our province’s two daily newspapers, the Winnipeg Free Press and their sister paper, The Brandon Sun, have a major problem. They hate conservatives and they especially hate Premier Pallister.

Never mind that the majority of rural people always vote conservative and often the people of Winnipeg do as well.

The daily papers are on some kind of death wish to be opposed to all things conservative. I will be the first to admit that Pallister is a bit bristly. These papers make every attempt to tear down

our bristly premier and dream daily of their glory days when the Doer/NDP administration plied the daily writers with beer, burgers, big billboards and ads to prop up their indefensible editorial policy.

The dailies let Gary Doer get away with BiPole III, with a disastrous devolution of child welfare, with neglecting care homes, education and economic development. The dailies failed all Manitobans. Why? Because all their journalists have been trained to hate all things conservative at Canada’s journalism schools that have become so open-minded that their brains fell out.

When the insanity stops, we will all be better off.

Implications of the resurrection

With Easter still fresh in our minds, let’s look at the significance of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ and its implications for each one of us.

Death is not the end Since the beginning of time, we have wrestled with the question: is there life after death? We die and are buried, but what about our souls? Do they cease to exist or do they continue on in an afterlife?

Speculations abound on the issue, and the only sure way to know would be if somebody died and came back to life. Fortunately, the resurrection of Jesus Christ provides a resounding answer to the question.

For the Christian, there is indeed life after death and the fear of death has been eliminated. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the church in Corinth, said this: 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 - “...Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death is your victory?

Where O death is your sting? The sting of death is sin...but thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Bible says our souls will continue to exist in one of two places: heaven or hell. Where we spend eternity depends on our standing with Jesus Christ; is He Lord and Saviour or just an afterthought.

Christianity is the only true religion Many will say there are different paths to God, making all religions similar, so choose whichever one you want and all will be fine. But all is not well because the originators of all world religions are

dead and buried except Jesus Christ. There is no hope trusting in a corpse that offers no assurance of eternal life.

John 14:6 - “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father (God) except through me.”

Jesus Christ is the Son of God Prior to their death and burial, many religious leaders made remarkable claims that they had the means of eternal life. Jesus Christ also made similar claims: He has the right to forgive sins (Mark 2:10), He has the right to be worshipped (Luke 5:8), He has the right to pass judgement on believers and unbelievers (Matthew 25: 31-46), He is the light of the world, the bread of life, the resurrection and the life ( John 8:12, 6:48, 11:25). But the similarity ends with His resurrection as made clear by the Apostle Paul in His letter to the church in Rome: Romans 1:4 - “and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Due to His resurrection, Jesus Christ cannot be considered equal with Confucius, Buddha, Mohammed, Krishna, the Pope, or the Dalai Lama. They were and are only men subject to judgement by the eternal Son of God just as you and I will be. The Bible says men like these will be judged more harshly because they deceived many with their false beliefs ( James 3:1, Matthew 18:6).

Christ’s death on the cross atoned for our sins The New Testament declares the following: “there is no one righteous, no not one; all of us will be held accountable by God; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; the wages if sin is death (Romans 3:10,19,23; 6:23). Sin had to be dealt with before we could be reconciled to God and Jesus Christ came to give His life as a ransom (Matthew 20:28) as confirmed by the Apostle Peter: 1 Peter 3:18 - “For Christ suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.” Just before Jesus died, He cried out: “It is finished” ( John 19:30) declaring His atoning work had been completed; but was it? Indeed it was, for the resurrection was God’s vindication that Christ most assuredly achieved eternal life for those who place their trust and hope in Him. Romans 4:25 - “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.”

My friends, the Lord of Glory, Prince of Peace, and Author of Life, begs you come to Him for eternal life (Matthew 11:28-30). Please don’t disregard His words!

“I

want to know if you can be alone with yourself and truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.” The Invitation, Oriah.

Well, never before have I had as many opportunities to test this statement. The question, for me, is– what are empty moments?

Are they the long, rambling walks with my dogs? For that me I quite like. They pause to refresh their scent on so many rocks and trees, and I wait, indulgently smiling. We pause to speak to those who address us.

I hear the signs of spring, the sights and sounds of spring, I refresh my memories of springs past, planning for the spring arriving. These walks are a routine, but never routine. Each day there is a new gift awaiting my spirit and soul, deeper gifts than first glance and hearing ever anticipated. I like that me, but is it an empty moment?

Are they the moments, and hours, I lie awake, longing for sleep? As we check our wee ones, I check; hungry, no, thirsty, no, cold, no, need to use the bathroom, no.

Then there is no reason not to be asleep!! This me I don’t like as well. These moments are filled with rambling thoughts. The other night, I replayed, in detail, a conversation I had with a neighbour when I was 12.

Twelve! Let it go! My words had been impetuous, not unruly or rude, but not well thought out. I was a child, let it go. And then the wondering; do I fall asleep best lying on my back, my side? Arms under the blanket?

Just sleep already! No, if this is an empty moment, I don’t like the company I keep.

Are they the quiet moments listening to and sharing with a friend? Not empty as in no purpose, but without schedule, without interruptions. More like a wonderful, blank page in a book on which I may write, soon filled with warm images, soft laughter and elation and enlargement. The time to listen without an agenda, without needing to formulate a defence or rebuttal, does that make it an empty moment? For that me I appreciate and truly like.

Are they the moments when my home is empty of other people? In the past year, I have said more often than I can count or remember– I appreciate and am grateful for the reality that I love my home, the safety, the structure, the comfort. There may be pots in the sink, there may be dust bunnies hiding too many places and there may be too many projects on the go, thankfully these “things” don’t displace the peace and calm. There are days when music fills my home, days when silence, a comfortable, welcoming silence, fills my home. There are days when technology dominates my time and days when social media, news media, outside opinions have no place or space in my home. If these be empty moments, I like that me as well.

Over the decades, I have sought professional guidance in making sense of my life experiences, liking myself, accepting myself. Most times, in the empty moments, I like myself!

E

very day we can listen or watch the news of the day. Some might be good, others bad or devastating and then someone will tell you that it is all fake. I guess we have to choose what we believe or not. We all have our own opinion.

At Easter, I received a lily with beautiful white f lowers. When I looked at one of the f lowers after it had just opened, I found it looking so delicate and pure. So white, so very special.

It made me think of Jesus. How He is so pure, so without sin and so special. He is there waiting for us to come to Him, to repent and be saved and become a follower of Jesus, wanting to do the things that are pleasing to Him and be blessed. Jesus spreads the Good News, which we find in the Bible and I believe it is the Truth and should be spread every day.

Jesus tells us in Luke 11:28 “Blessed rather are those who hear the Word of God and obey it.”

Let’s listen or watch the Good News each day.

Advocacy in health care is needed Dear Ken and Christine, Writing to let you know my thoughts and prayers are with you. Also writing to let you know you’ve done it again– written a column which I can support and underscore.

I know, for a fact, that if Gaile (my wife) and Kelly and Jared (my sons) had not been by my side, as my advocates, after my accident more than three years ago now, I would be dead. Their insistence on various actions needed to not just keep me alive, but also to help set me on the road to recovery, have given me another opportunity to experience all this amazing world has to offer.

Yes, our medical system and its professionals are amazing. However, there’s only so much it can do if the patient is unable to speak for himself. At various stages along the way, Gaile has challenged a diagnosis and has forced the medical profession to consider “other options”.

Following my accident, it was assumed that I would not walk again and decisions were made accordingly.

These were challenged and– with the amazing restorative powers of physiotherapy– I am walking again (I do keep my cane nearby for those times when I feel unsteady).

One of the real obstacles in the recovery process has been the ageism that seems to permeate all aspects of our culture. For me, the real bright spot in my recovery was the young physiotherapist who NEVER allowed me to use my age as a reason for not trying a particular exercise. Her persistent belief in me and my abilities were crucial in getting me out of my wheelchair and onto the exercise equipment!

And my advocates always kept researching what else might serve as a suitable torture in getting me back into that zone that is called “normal”.

Again. Thoughts are with you. Hope you are soon back where you would rather be! Stay safe!

It’s not all the government’s fault

O f t en , I t h i n k t he most common fear isn't public speaking or the fear of heights, f lying, f inding a hair in your chocolate pudding. From observation, I'd say the most common fear is being accountable for your actions' consequences.

Bl a m i ng t he gover nment, corporations and circumstances created by lifestyle choices has become a national pastime. This contact blaming says much about our wanting to avoid the fact at any given moment, a person is the sum of their choices.

Lately, it seems it's our political leaders who're at fault for COVID, and now it's variant, to keep rolling along. It's easier to use the government as a scapegoat instead of taking responsibility for your own actions or looking at your family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours' behav iour and calling them out if necessary.

This "I'm not responsible for my community, my countr y, how I'm leaving the planet for future generations," or such egocent r ic at t itude is why Doug Ford's Whac-A-Mole lockdowns continue.

At this point, there's not one person over the age of six who doesn't know what they need to do to stem the spreading of COVID, which for those who need a reminder are: When in public, which should be minimal (going to and from work, only purchasing essential

items), properly wear a facemask.

Practice social distancing.

Wash your hands frequently.

It doesn't get simpler than this!

Undeniably if everyone did these three simple actions, we wouldn't be near the current infection levels we're now seeing.

I wouldn't go as far as stating COVID would be eradicated by now (that would be too ambitious), but it wou ld’ve been mitigated.

How can I be so certain?

W h i le t a k i n g h i g h school biology, I learned how viruses spread and therefore adjusted my actions accordingly.

Since I've been practicing t he ab ove -ment ione d COVID safety protocols, I haven't had a cold or the f lu. You may have had the same experience. I can't recall a December, January, or February when I wasn't literally knocked down by a bad cold. This year nothing!

Government policies deeming what businesses are essential and can be open and which businesses must be closed don' t s pread v i r uses.

People choosing to ignore COVID safety protocols, going to malls, gathering socially, and not wearing a facemask are how COVID is spreading.

Just because the government allows you to do somet h ing doesn't mean you should. Still, for many, the prevailing logic is: If the government

allows me to do it, then it must be okay.

A sense of entitlement has many not thinking in terms of what's right, but in terms of "what's allowed."

Because using the government as a scapegoat absolves the individual from being responsible for their actions, this logic isn't uncommon. Do these same people say the government allowing the sale of foods that are high in trans fat is the cause of so many people being obese? They log ically know people choosing to eat such foods is what creates obesity. The same goes with the selling of cigarettes—choosing to smoke is the cause of lung cancer, not the freedom to buy cigarettes.

Does the governement need to be our nanny?

You don't need the government to tell you to do what you know is right, but I could be wrong on this assumption. Maybe t he gover n ment does need to be our nanny and impose draconian measures. Should martial law, restricting movements and imposing curfews, as was done in Quebec (9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. across the province) back in January, have been done in late-March 2020?

Obviously, educating how to be COVID safe and expect ing people to make choices in their best health interest and those around them hasn't worked. The foundation for maturity is understanding your actions have consequences to you

and those around you.

However small they may be, our actions have farreaching ripple effects, wh ich we often don't see. The rapid spread of COVID over a country as vast as Canada shows how interconnected we are and part of a community that extends well beyond our respective geography.

I nstead of com ing together to fight a common enemy, COV I D, many are spinning this pandemic into narrat ives to fur t her t heir political or social agenda.

Counterproductive division exists between those who are either COVID deniers, who simply don't care about the risks or who've turned wearing a mask and social distancing into a freedom issue versus those who are doing their best to mitigate the spreading of the virus, which thankfully is the majority.

Then there are those who evangelize the narrat ive that lockdowns and the COVID safety protocols I mentioned don't work. As proof, they point out, the number of COVID cases is increasing, not decreasing.

P rev ious lockdow ns haven't worked because there hasn't been 100 per

cent compliance. This 3rd lockdown won't work without 100 per cent compliance! Not following the government's lockdown guidelines and then claiming lockdowns don't work is the equivalent to saying a person not wearing a seatbelt who dies in a car accident proves seatbelts don't work. Of course, lockdowns don't work if you don't follow ba s ic C OV I D s a fet y protocols.

I'd go as far as stating if Ontarians had followed the 1st lockdown restrictions, Ontario probably wou ld n' t ne e d a 3r d lockdown. Blaming the government while not taking personal accountability—how's that working out so far?

Acknowledge individual behaviour Not everything is the government's fault. The gover nment isn't preventing anyone from diligently practicing COVID safety protocols or forcing anyone to go out for nonessential items. Re: Virden Empire Advance, March 19, 2021. Letter writer, Cam Dahl, General Manager, of Manitoba Pork, voices concern about the threat of disease outbreaks to the Manitoba hog industry. He tells readers, that legislation is a necessary step for those who trespass onto farm operations. (Ag-gag, Bill 62) However, he does not tell us, how often trespassing has been committed on factory farms, nor how often speculative intrusions culminated to infect the pigs with disease.

Diseases, for instance like Swine Flu, H1N1, SARS, and the PED virus, that have affected Manitoba pigs during the past two decades. Therefore, I suggest that his expressions are based on conjecture, rather than any proven facts!

Perhaps, we should compare the number of times that "trespassing" has been committed "from a factory farm" with the number of odour complaints from neighbours, which could be construed as evidence of "trespass" owing to the particulates causing the odour.

As a rural resident in Manitoba, I appreciate much of proposed trespassing legislation, which has been a long time coming. However, it doesn't fully explain why bio-security is suddenly so critical, especially when factory hog barn establishments have been in Manitoba for 25 years. Yes, bringing disease issues onto properties might be a concern if it wasn't for the fact that hog barns and the huge lagoons of feces are perfect mediums for deceases to proliferate within the premises.

Factory-style hog barns that are dominating the hog industry now are a far cry from the family farms that many of the public still envision. The pigs are never outside, but are constantly confined in large facilities with slatted f loors, through which their urine and feces fall to the pits below. The toxic fumes, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emanating from the pits will suffocate the animals in a matter of minutes if the ventilation systems fail. The imminent danger of ag-gag legislation being passed in this province means these Manitoba pigs will have no one advocating for their welfare.

There will be no way for Canadian consumers and export customers to know of the inhumane conditions these pigs endure. Instead, the general public will be at the mercy of the industry's secretive treatment of farm animals.

Nature did not intend for animals to live by the thousands, crammed together inside buildings, raised on pharmaceutical products, with no access to the outdoors for grass, sunlight or the clean healthy scent of fresh air. The industrial production of farm animals is a grim saga of pollution, health risks and animal misery.

The raising of animals in such a manner is toxic to the planet and to humans.

Provincial officials that claim they learned from SARS (2002-2004) obviously missed some of the most important details. Covid 19, like SARS is a zoonosis disease. It originates from animals , animals, such as hogs.

Do ethics matter? In this dismal fashion of raising animals,...apparently not!

Last year in North America, there were over 3,400 collisions with trains, resulting in over 2,200 serious injuries or fatalities. Rail safety is a core value at CN and CN Police wants to be a part of the effort to minimize the risk of accidents related to the act of trespassing on railway property.

CN Police officers want pedestrians to stay safe when near railway tracks or property, it is important to remember that the only safe and legal place to cross train tracks is at a railway crossing. Railway yards, train tracks, tunnels and bridges are private property. Walking or biking along railway

tracks or taking a shortcut across tracks is dangerous and illegal, and trespassers could face a fine or worst it could cost them their life.

CN Police will be on patrol throughout the province and want to send a strong safety reminder not to trespass on railway tracks or property.

Evelyn Madeline Bridgeman BRIDGEMAN: Evelyn Madeline Bridgeman (nee Wingert) passed peacefully with family by her side on March 28, 2021 at the age of 91 years.

Mom was born in Alameda, SK on March 15, 1930. She grew up in various Manitoba locations before settling in Alexander, MB. In 1950, Mom was the second oldest of 10 when the family called she was always available in time of need. Mom went into training as a psychiatric nurse at the Brandon Mental Health Centre graduating in 1952 where she worked for many years.

Mom met Dad, her husband Earl Bridgeman at a dance in Brandon and were married on September 17, 1953. They built their first house on 1024 3rd St. N. where they resided until 2000. They then moved to Monterey Estates where they enjoyed the small community setting. They were always attending potlucks and events there. They moved to Victoria Landing in 2007 where they enjoyed their later years.

After her retirement Evelyn and Earl enjoyed square dancing with Shilo and Circle 8 square dance clubs. She belonged to the Canadian Order of Foresters and volunteered at Fairview Home.

Evelyn and Earl made use of their retirement years travelling and enjoying many bus tours from Europe and England to all parts of Canada and Alaska.

After Dad’s passing in 2012, Mom continued to live at Victoria Landing attending the events and music that was offered. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and family and was blessed to enjoy her time with her great grandkids Obrey and Emery.

Mom truly enjoyed family gatherings catching up on all the family news and all the goodies that were brought.

Evelyn is survived by daughter Darcie (Corky) Glaseman, grandchildren Dustin (Elizabeth), Amanda (Corey), great grandchildren, Obrey and Emery; and daughter Michelle Huskilson, grandchildren Morgan (Ashley), Ty (Jennassa Muir) and their father Richard Huskilson. She is also survived by sisters: Leona Glennon (Gordon Garrett), Eileen Robertson, Nadine (Frederick) Kalinowsky, and sisters-in-law Lorraine, Betty and Millie Wingert; Ethel and Greta Bridgeman, and many nieces and nephews extended family and friends. Evelyn is predeceased by her loving husband J Earl Bridgeman; Mother and Father Mary and Joseph Wingert, five brothers and one sister and many in-laws and nephews.

A small family service will be held on April 6, 2021 at Rosewood Memorial Gardens with Rev. Doug Craig officiating. Pallbearers are her grandchildren; Dustin, Morgan, Amanda and Ty, niece Leita Kalinowsky and nephew Brent Robertson.

Proposed gravel pit regarded by various local representatives as unneeded

On Tuesday evening Apr. 6, a public hearing was held by the Riverdale Municipality council at RCC. The matter at hand, a proposed gravel pit at SW 11-12-21 (leased Crown Land just a few miles south of Rivers MB). The meeting was attended by many locals, as well as the council, CAO, media and two representatives from the applying company 10036519 Manitoba Ltd. a company under the same ownership as Western Asphalt. The hearing began with the two representatives from the proponent stating their intent for the land and preemptively addressing concerns that were brought to them before said hearing through various mediums.

The land is to be held under

a conditional use permit for aggregate mining through the Manitoba government, for the purpose of open pit aggregate mining. Topsoil is to be stripped and piled along the edge of the leased property or where there is considered to be no viable material below the surface.

Hauling of the material would go through existing roads despite a local objector who states that one of the proposed sections of road falls on private property and therefore cannot be used for the purpose.

The hours of the quarry for excavation would primarily be during the day with an exception for crushing purposes which would be limited in duration but would operate 24/hour/days. It is expected that the mine would be used to extract anywhere from 0-50,000

tonnes of material per year depending on demand.

This quarry would operate for anywhere from 10 to 20 years, with rehabilitation outlined by the Resource Development branch Rehabilitation Program.

Following the outline of the proposed action those opposed were called upon.

A number of people gave their reasoning for objecting to the new quarry, wildlife and habitat were among the main issues, the land the proposed to be used consists of a mixed of native prairie short and long grass ecosystems alongside a stretch of woodland. The ecosystems in question host a number of creatures including a herd of elk, white tail deer and recently mule deer, various other flora and fauna a commonly be found in these particular habitats.

Another objection, included during the hearing, had to do with both infrastructure and public safety as well as highway and traffic safety concerns. The proposed road (pictured) would place the loaded trucks (approximately 80,000lbs) at a major disadvantage in terms of sight lines for safe turning onto highway 25 due to the nature of the turn-off and the uphill battle a loaded semi-truck faces when attempting to accelerate up a hill with no approach or run-up. Local residents of the area surrounding that road and junction expressed concerns of grandchildren and children who play in the area on bikes, with anywhere from 1000-2000 trucks per year going by.

The effects of the weighted trucks on local roadways was brought to attention

and questioned as well. The land has a current lease for agricultural practices, specifically cattle farming by locals in the area, though it is understood that one parcel of land can hold two leases if they are not for the same purpose (in this instance one lease for mining and another for cattle).

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m. fol-

lowing clarifying questions, a decision was not made during this meeting. The subject of the mine will be discussed and investigated further by the council before a follow-up hearing occurs, only those in attendance for this initial meeting will be permitted to attend the second.
