Saw-whet, say-what?

By Sheila Runions Banner Staff he ornell ab o rnithology website describes a northern saw whet owl as a tiny owl with a catlike ace, oversi ed head and bright yellow eyes, practically bursting with attitude here mice and other small mammals are concerned, this fierce, silent owl is anything but cute ne o the most common owls in orests across northern orth merica, saw whets are highly nocturnal and seldom seen Their high pitched too too too call is a common evening sound in evergreen mountain orests rom anuary through ay This little guy was noticed one day last week by ray ouglas, soundly sleeping in a tree on his arm ive miles west o ivers ray guesses the bird s body was appro imately si inches high it is the first time he and wi e arry have seen the owl any place around here The bird matches another description on the ornell s site which says, uring daylight, they roost in dense vegetation, typically ust above eye level and near the trunk in evergreen trees uick check in their bird book and the ouglases identified it as a northern saw whet owl, based on its si e, roosting description and markings It is presumed he pu ed his eathers to be insulated rom the cold
