Jordan’s journey to provincials J
By Sheila Runions Banner Staff
ordan McLeod lives on the family acreage (Shane and Sarah, brothers Riley and Randy) eight miles southeast of Rivers. A 14-yearold Grade 9 student at Rivers Collegiate in the 2015-16 year, she was one of five girls from here who travelled to Minnedosa to be part of the Grade 9-12 divisional rugby team (there is no rugby team in Rivers). Practice began in January and games ended in early June. According to Sarah, “They had a great season, playing at divisionals and ending up third.” At a pay-to-play regional competition in Saskatoon in July, Jordan was selected to join Manitoba’s provincial under-18 rugby team. She had three six-hour practices (in Winnipeg, Portage
la Prairie and Brandon) with the team before their one and only competition at Prairie Provincials in Brandon. Manitoba won both its games so Jordan returned home on Aug. 14 with first place; congratulations! Her accomplishment is even more impressive when one considers that the first time she played this game was in January when she joined the team. She wanted to try the sport because her brothers play(ed) on the Elton Collegiate rugby team. Jordan, now 15, has signed up for a “7s” team — the version which saw Canadian women win bronze at the recent Olympics. Her next goal is to qualify for the provincial 7s team and travel to Las Vegas in winter 2017.
Hockey school donates thousands By Hall Sveistrup RCC Hockey Camp director Derek Laxdal and camp co-ordinators Don Marriott and Hall Sveistrup are happy to announce an addendum to the Aug. 12 report which appeared in Rivers Banner. The annual venture held at Riverdale Community Centre (RCC) generated $5,000 in ice rental and a donation of $8,750 to Rivers Recreation Facilities Review Committee (RRFRC). This brings the five-year total to $25,000 in
ice rental and $49,750 to RRFRC. The latter amount is designated for facility upgrades. As reported in the original article, the co-ordinating committee and instructional staff received numerous compliments on the quality of instruction. Eighty-one participants (up from the original number of 76) have registered for next year’s camp, which will be hosted July 31-Aug. 4.
August activity By Bruce Klassen Chief Rivers Police Service saw a total of 55 calls for service in August. We received another grant from Civil Forfeiture (Province of Manitoba) for $17,000! This money will be allocated towards putting a second computer in our second patrol car. We now have E-ticketing capability in one of the patrol cars, courtesy of a software donation through the Highways Compliance Department. And now, for our monthly statistics.
Only one Criminal Code case was opened out of 19 possible categories; we had another theft under $5,000 (now 19 in 2016). Two accidents were reported to police and there were 19 other Highway Traffic Act infractions, such as speeding, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without a licence, etc. The animal control bylaw was enforced four times, which leaves us with the ever-popular assistance and miscellaneous sections. continued on page 7

HELP (Helping Each Local Project) is hosting its second annual Christmas bazaar. Our very first event was last year’s bazaar in which proceeds were split between Riverdale Splashpark Committee and Riverdale Daycare Committee. This year’s event is Saturday, Nov. 19, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. in the upper hall of Rivers Legion. Nomination buckets are located at Westoba Credit Union and the waiting room of
Rivers Medical Centre. There is a list of nominees beside each bucket; we ask you to vote for your choice. We will be pulling the buckets in early October to tabulate the ballots and then announce which organization(s) will receive the monies raised from the bazaar. We anticipate and appreciate your support now and at the bazaar.
