Media planting day held at Rivers Ag Society grounds By Ken Waddell Banner Staff

E

veryone talks about grassroots involvement but Rivers has gone deeper than that, with tree roots. Billed as a media planting day, Friday, Sept. 23 saw a huge crowd of school students and community members gather to celebrate a major milestone for Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee (RTSRC). Land has been levelled and prepped for planting lilac trees in the shape of a train and a train’s cow catcher to create a labyrinth at the entrance to Rivers Ag Society grounds; an RV park is also planned. Prior to the official ceremonies, Rivers and Area Lions Club served ham-

burgers, hotdogs, cookies and drinks to community members and students from both schools. At the ceremony RTSRC chair Donna Morken chair said, “Today we are here to showcase our heritage while building on our community. Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee is an example of community heritage as it relates to economic and community development. Formed in 2006 the mission statement of the committee was to the “restoration, renovation and rejuvenation of the train station.” Continued on page 6
