Media planting day held at Rivers Ag Society grounds

E

veryone talks about grassroots involvement but Rivers has gone deeper than that, with tree roots. Billed as a media planting day, Friday, Sept. 23 saw a huge crowd of school students and community members gather to celebrate a major milestone for Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee (RTSRC). Land has been levelled and prepped for planting lilac trees in the shape of a train and a train’s cow catcher to create a labyrinth at the entrance to Rivers Ag Society grounds; an RV park is also planned.

Prior to the official ceremonies, Rivers and Area Lions Club served ham-

burgers, hotdogs, cookies and drinks to community members and students from both schools.

At the ceremony RTSRC chair Donna Morken chair said, “Today we are here to showcase our heritage while building on our community. Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee is an example of community heritage as it relates to economic and community development.

Formed in 2006 the mission statement of the committee was to the “restoration, renovation and rejuvenation of the train station.”

n the United States, there’s a powerful debate raging over minimum wage. Across the country, low-wage workers are protesting, demanding the minimum wage be increased to $15/ hour. Currently, for states that have a minimum wage, the rates are between $5.15 and $10.50 an hour. We are seeing the same debate in Canada, although not to the same extent.

It’s not hard to see their motivation, the US economy has seen recessions and a decline in well- MY paying middle PERSPECTIVE class jobs. This might not be a problem if it weren’t set against the backdrop of large corporate profits.

According to Forbes, the 10 most profitable companies in the US made $210 billion in 2015 alone. Included in that top 10, among Apple and oil and gas giant Exxon Mobil, is minimum-wage employer Walmart. It’s hard when you struggle to put food on the table and gas in your car to see your employer post a $19.2 billion profit.

To their credit, Walmart has moved to offer better compensation, now paying at least $2.75 over minimum wage. While Walmart is the largest, the Forbes top 500 list is full of employers whose staff aren’t making much over minimum wage. It’s hard not to feel for the little guy.

The problem is that while these large businesses do employ a lot of people, the majority of businesses are in fact small. In the US, the Small Business Administration says that 99.7 per cent of the country’s businesses are small and in Canada, the statistics are the same. While Walmart, or Home Depot, or McDonald’s may be among the most profitable companies in the US, that’s not the case for most of the smaller businesses paying minimum wage.

The challenges facing low-income workers are real and should be addressed, but a higher minimum wage isn’t the answer. No matter how much proponents say it won’t happen, a rise in the minimum wage can only mean one of two things: a rise in prices for all goods, including the necessities purchased by minimum wage earners, or a decrease in the number of jobs. The decrease in jobs can happen in one of two ways; first, some employees will be let go and the work will be spread among the remaining staff; second, human jobs will be replaced by automation and self serve, something we are already seeing at retailers and fast food restaurants.

The statistics back this up. In 2008, an extensive study of decades worth of minimum wage research found a one to two per cent decrease in employment for teenagers or very low skilled workers for each 10 per cent increase in minimum wage. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office did their own calculation and found that an increase in the federal minimum wage, from its current rate of $7.25 an hour to $10.10 an hour, would result in the loss of about 500,000 jobs. The same trends are true in Canada as well.

Perhaps we could justify the job losses for these workers if overall, low wage earners would be helped from poverty, but the statistics show that the relationship between minimum wages and poverty is actually quite weak. Work done by researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland found that higher minimum wages can actually increase poverty. In March 2016, Statistics Canada released their own report about minimum wage in Canada and the report noted that there is no consensus about how the minimum wage affects poverty and inequality, but added that the association with employment is well-documented – an increase in the minimum wage seems to be associated with a decrease in employment among teenagers, the group most likely to be paid at this hourly rate.

The issue of poverty reduction and the ability of working people to earn a living wage are extremely important to our society, but an across the board raise in minimum wage isn’t the answer. Fewer jobs and further erosion in purchasing power isn’t the answer.

Despite this, it’s clear that governments like these policies, they shift the responsibility to private entities and while some of them can absorb the costs, many of them aren’t so fortunate.

A pluralistic problem I

will be the first to admit that I am not a huge fan of public inquiries into contemporary social, political or economic issues.

They are costly, they take a lot of time and they rarely achieve the outcome those who ask for them hope to see.

Some inquiries, however, are absolutely necessary — and the recently announced inquiry into Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women (MMAW) is one of them. The issue is not going away any time soon and in this case, the costs associated with the inquiry will be money well spent.

What has happened so far? The commissioners have been appointed. Consultations have taken place.

The federal government, provincial governments and other interested parties have agreed to the Terms of Reference and have pledged their full cooperation with the inquiry. From this point on, the commissioners are in charge of organizing the inquiry, setting up an office, hiring staff, etc. — all of which must be done before public hearings can begin.

FAITHFULLY YOURS neil stRohschein about a public inquiry is that it gets all parties with vested interests in a specific issue in the same room at the same time. It forces them to listen to each other. And since testimony is given under oath, the submissions made can be questioned by the commissioners themselves, by commission counsel or by counsel for groups given “intervenor status” with the inquiry (the police, First Nations groups, governments, etc.).

Whatever the outcome of the inquiry, one thing that will emerge is that this issue is not nearly as “black and white” as some people would have us believe. It is a complex issue — one for which all who will testify at this inquiry must accept their fair share of responsibility.

But while the focus will be on the missing and murdered aboriginal women, the

inquiry should help Canadians deal with another, equally important issue.

We are no longer a country with just three dominant cultures (English, French, First Nation). We have become a pluralistic society, with people from every race, culture and creed on earth who proudly call Canada their home. Those who immigrated to this country brought their cultures and faith traditions with them.

They were welcomed with open arms, but the adjustment to life in Canada has not been easy for the immigrants or for those in whose communities they settled.

Different cultures have different values. Different religions have different rules. When the values and rules followed by one group clash with those followed by others, tension and conflict result. They are often followed by charges of bias, prejudice and racism — all

of which are promptly denied. But the denials do little to alleviate the tension and mistrust caused by the accusations.

Public hearings in the MMAW inquiry will begin soon. They will receive extensive media coverage.

All Canadians need to follow these hearings closely.

Listen to what the witnesses will share. Put yourself in their shoes. Try to feel the pain of those seeking justice. Ask yourself, “If I was in their position, if I had experienced what they have, would I feel any differently?”

But don’t stop there. As you hear the stories and read the reports of the hearings, look at your own life.

Examine your own attitudes towards those of different races, cultures or religions.

Check your own heart and change your own attitudes before pointing fingers at others and demanding changes from them. We have all contributed to the entrenchment of the attitudes that will be revealed in the coming inquiry. We must all work together to get rid of them.

very once in a while, a verse from the King James version of the bible says what I see more succinctly than any other version. Possibly because it is the first version from which I learned, possibly because I appreciate good poetry. As I walked this morning, dogs at leash, of course, the voice in my head comforted me with the words of Psalm 121, ‘I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.’ Much of my studying now seeks the words from the New International version, but this morning the translation doesn’t capture the depth of the moving of my spirit by the Spirit. ‘I lift my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and

Rita FRiesen earth.’ Perhaps the opening phrase – I will – meets my need this morning. Looking upward is a choice. A decision, a will. As I mature, and hopefully get wiser, I recognize more and more that attitude is a choice.

I will. I will be thankful, I will give thanks, I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. No question about it, my help comes from the Lord which made heaven and earth. I like the use of the word ‘which’ in there as well. Interesting, not ‘who’ but ‘which’.

all is here. Each night I take in the geraniums from my deck, in case we get some frost over night and each morning I put them out again because the weather has been so nice during the day.

A flock of geese honked their way over the other day and I am so amazed how they stay in their formation.

to live inside my head, doesn’t it? It is a routine walk to exercise the dogs and get me up and out and moving. It took a moment to stop and look around me to once again see the beauty of this earth. With fall comes further vistas.

The leaves are thinning and my world looks different.

As I stand in awe I can see the colours of autumn on the hillside. Golden stubble contrasting with the green of the meadows and hayfields. In the morning it is common, no, never common, but frequent, to see the mountains kissed with

a mist, a veil, hiding the beauty, leaving me wanting more. Restful for the eyes and soul, I am reminded again how, when coming home from away, when I see the gentle curve of the mountains edge, my heart is at home. I have seen far away places, world renowned attractions and they were good, but seeing my mountains brings me home, in every sense of the word.

A bit of a ramble of thoughts, inviting you to see our world anew. The beauty of a sun reddened apple, the last rose of season, the rich brown of the ripened weeds in the ditch, the call of the crow, the ‘V’ of geese, all wondrous in themselves. The sound of the wind in the drying leaves, the rhythmic beat of wings of a low flying raven.

Make it a choice. I will lift up my eyes.

If the leader swings to the right or to the left they all follow in unison. Are they honking out of protest, or do they just say amen and completely trust their leader?

It is an amazing sight to see them fly over, going south and they know that there is their destination.

Do we sometimes protest what our Leader, God, decides for our life or do we say amen and completely trust Him? “When we commit our way to the Lord and trust in Him, He shall bring it to pass.” - Psalm 37.

When the Lord God is our Leader we have nothing to fear. He will take us to our Heavenly destination.

Reasons to belong to Kin Belonging to a service club is so much more than volunteering. Yes, that is part of it. There will be times that you are giving up an evening, a weekend, a day, to roll up your sleeves and help out for the greater good.

Let’s face it, we are not all selfless, pitching in makes us feel good. However, belonging to a service group like the Neepawa Kin Club is so much more than being just a volunteer.

Kin Canada is in its 96th year of existence. It was founded in February 1920 by Hal Rogers, who was looking to fill the gap of fellowship he had felt during the war. So he started a club. A Kinsmen Club. It was for young men to get together, to meet new people, to have some fun, and to serve the community’s greatest need.

Those basic things haven’t changed in the organization.

Belonging to a Service Club does create fellowship, build social networks, allow us to fundraise and do service work in order to serve our community’s greatest need, as well as having some fun while doing it.

People join Kin for a number of reasons. My reason was because I was new to town, and wanted to be able to expand my network by making connections on a different level than through work. I joined in November 2004. I’ve been an extremely active member within the club, the Association and our community.

I had one of my best years in Kin last year. I was Governor for District 2. This meant that I was the leader of a great team of people, tasked to help support and guide the 45 clubs across Manitoba and North-Western Ontario. I travelled to club meetings, events, service projects, and toured our National President to the vast majority of our clubs in the District. I was privileged to see the hard work our clubs do to impact the communities.

Many communities wouldn’t have parks, swimming pools, halls, hockey teams, even arenas if it wasn’t for the work of service groups like KIN Canada working hard in their communities. We wouldn’t have raised over $90,556 in District 2 for Cystic Fibrosis, and $495,267 to go back into communities in District 2. Beyond the fundraising and projects, I was even more at awe to see what Kin can do for individual members.

Belonging to a Kin, Kinsmen or Kinette Club can provide so much more than an opportunity to volunteer. Being members in an Association like Kin Canada gives you a chance to tap into an organization that is passionate about developing strong leadership skills in its members. To give them chances to go outside of their clubs and communities for professional and personal development skills, to further their networks, to impact the lives of their members, which will in turn, will impact their communities.

At the National Convention in Edmonton this year, Kin Canada announced a couple of exciting projects that definitely will add value to being a member. The announcement of a partnership with Toastmasters was particularly exciting. There has always been great support for public speaking in Kin. In fact, Kin members can participate in a Speakers Contest that sees winners from Clubs go on to Zones, District and National Competitions. The partnership with Toastmasters will allow clubs to host an accredited Toastmasters Speachcraft course through Kin for members interested in further developing their public speaking skills.

Also at the convention, the launch of KIN-U was announced. KIN-U will be an opportunity for members to take professional and personal development training through on-line modules and self-guided practice.

These courses are developed so members can use them to further develop skills, but also to be able to show their employers the type of development training they have taken. Members can now use their time in KIN to further develop skills and enhance their resume.

November 2016 marks the 40th Anniversary of Kin in Neepawa. The Neepawa Kin Club currently has 6 members and we are looking for men and women over 19, who are interested in giving back to their community and investing in themselves, to join our club. ‘Look to the future’ Continued from page 1 This will be accomplished through making the station a viable property for heritage preservation and economic development. Our goal is to ensure the area has an opportunity to connect with the past while creating a vision for the future.

Further to this, we always made a pledge that we would be sustainable and continue that work for the restoration of the station.

To that end, we are beginning today with the first step toward building one of the sustainability projects for the station, but for the community as well. We have made many partnerships along the way and today is a perfect example of this.

“In 2015 RTSRC applied to CN Eco-connexions from the Ground Up granting program to begin a sustainability project. There were 92 applications received across Canada; 31 projects were picked to receive funding.

Of that, four projects were chosen as “super” projects across Canada. Edmonton, Hamilton, Sackville and yes, Rivers! This CN program administered through Communities in Bloom is providing the committee $25,000 to get this project underway.

“Another first for our committee is that we are the first to use QR codes on our display signage that can be accessed by your phone and take you to the two websites involved (cn. ca and riversdalyheritage. ca). We felt that having

representatives from all of our community to assist in the planting will ensure that we have a vision for the future. It is fitting that it is National Forest Week as we start this project.”

A number of dignitaries brought greetings including MP for Dauphin-Swan River–Neepawa Robert Sopuck, MLA for Riding Mountain Greg Nesbitt and Riverdale Municipality Mayor Todd Gill. CN Police Cst. Joe Jardine spoke on behalf of CN; CN families from the community were recognized including Myrtle Wooldridge, Heather Lamb, Marlene Hayhurst, Shirley Kamula and Irwin Walker.

Communities in Bloom national president and founder Raymond Carriere complimented the community on their efforts to date and wished everyone well for the future of the project.

Morken extended thanks to RTSRC for all the work done behind the scenes “in keeping our heritage alive but at the same time, having a vision for the future. Thank you to Riverdale Municipality and all their employees for working as a partner in this project. To CN and Communities In Bloom for the financial support for this project, Rivers and Area Lions Club for making us hotdogs and hamburgers, to Rolling River School Division superintendent Mary-Anne Ploshynsky with Rivers Collegiate and Rivers Elementary schools and to everyone who came

from the community to participate.”

Morken explained that RTSRC is comprised of many people, not just the ones who regularly attend meetings but those who assist many other ways. For example, Aeleen Sclater, a local artist whose idea and design for the locolabyrinth began in 2006, who was in attendance.

Rev. Glenna Beauchamp offered a blessing for the trees and then the assembled students, assisted by older community members, planted 235 little leaf lilacs in the designed labyrinth pattern. White spruce seedlings courtesy of Tree Canada and little chocolate trains were handed out to everyone in attendance.

Morken closed her remarks by saying,“Let them look to the past, but let them also look to the future; let them look to the

land of their ancestors, but let them look also to the land of their children.”

Morken added in an interview this week with Rivers Banner that, “At the same time as this was going on, through Rivers & Area Community Foundation and in partnership with Tree Canada we had another 92,000 jack pine seedlings planted here.

They just finished up Saturday so we are really working at greening our community.”

By Tony Eu Banner Staff ith the second annual What’s The Big Idea? event coming up, it’s the perfect time to check in with winners from last year and see where they are now. One such winner was Lisa Ballegeer of Rapid City; she is the owner and operator of Innovative Hearing Technology, a mobile hearing centre. Her pitch won $500 which was used to help with the daily cost of business. Ballegeer says business was going very well, adding that if she was working somewhere else, as a more typical hearing centre, she’d probably earn around the same amount.

“I’ve acquired more locations that I go to on a regular basis [since the event]. I’ve definitely acquired more people, more interest, with the fact that I can actually go to them.”

She outfitted a trailer with all the necessary equipment to provide a mobile hearing testing station. The trailer is pulled by her company truck; advertising on the sides of each further promote her business, which is somewhat unique when compared to other companies one must visit.

I’m trying to make people more aware that this is pretty important and I’m coming to you because this is how much more I feel it’s important.”

Doug and Hali Finlay, owners of Oakview Equipment, also won a $500 award last year. The couple used the money to cover the registration costs of becoming an MTZ dealership. New tractors and associated parts arrived to their home-based business (two miles west of Rapid City on Hwy. 24) in June and while there haven’t been any purchases yet, there has been a lot of interest in them.

The couple offers some advice to future business owners and entrepreneurs, saying, “One of the biggest things is having confidence in yourself and what you’re trying to do.”

As for their thoughts on What’s The Big Idea? Finlays say, “It’s a great idea for new businesses starting up. It’s a place where you can go and all kinds of resources are there. There’s also the guidance for what needs to be done when starting a business.”

s previously reported, Neepawa and Minnedosa’s entrepreneurial event, What’s The Big Idea?, is back for Round 2. Following the success of last year, 2016 marks the second year this annual event will be happening. Organized by the economic development officers from Neepawa and Minnedosa, this year’s event will be Thursday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s going to be held at ArtsForward, previously the Viscount Cultural Centre, at 293 Mountain Avenue in Neepawa.

“What’s The Big Idea? is an entrepreneur event,” says Marilyn Crewe, economic development officer (EDO) for Neepawa. “It’s about supporting entrepreneurs, supporting people

Minnedosa’s EDO Vern May mentions a unique challenge is that a lot of the time when entrepreneurs get into the business world, they feel like they’re on their own.

“I think it’s kind of a really exciting opportunity for business. It’s almost like themselves against the world. With this event we’ve kind of done some legwork on the community side to get the towns and the RMs involved. When they have a stake in the success of some of these businesses, there’s almost like built-in support from the first day that they open. I think that could be a tremendous boost to a small business owner.

As you know, when you get into business, you’re really sticking your neck way out there.”

At the event individuals will pitch their business idea to a panel of business experts. This panel will judge the pitch and the idea and then distribute awards.

Each award or incentive has a set of criteria attached to it. For example, some awards are community based; to receive them

the idea must benefit that specific region. The event really is about bringing entrepreneurs together to improve their ideas and get a foot in the door of the business world, so to speak.

“It’s a chance for people with a business idea to actually take it out of their head and write it down on paper,” Crewe explains.

“Often people spend their lives, ‘If nothing else mattered I would do this thing,’ and what we find is that if people have the chance to start to solidify a business plan, be able to demonstrate that business idea in some way or other and then actually talk to our pitching parlour team and pitch their business idea, it actually turns it from this idea to something solid and tangible.”

May thinks the goal is, “First of all, to let people know that in rural Manitoba, we’re open for business. It sounds a little bit cliché, but to let them know that rural Manitoba is excited about growth and it’s something we’re interested in; it’s not, ‘Well, we already have a gas station and a grocery store, we’re all set, what else could we need?’We’re now seeing a lot of exciting possibilities, even through some of our home-based and online businesses, that a generation ago weren’t

even possible; we couldn’t even imagine these things as businesses, let alone an opportunity in rural Manitoba.”

As for what kinds of pitches they’re looking for, Crewe says, “We have two kinds of options for this. What we’re looking for is a business plan. We need someone with a new business idea, or someone who’s already in business but maybe they’re looking to change their business plan, maybe add a new division to their business or start to test out a new market. So, a new business plan or a change in an existing business plan.”

What that business plan is, though, is completely up to the individual.

“We could talk about some of the hottest trends in business overall, but that wasn’t what we saw last year,” notes May. “What we saw were some creative new ideas that we couldn’t have predicted and the businesses that opened as a result have been excitingly successful.”

Thinking about pitching an idea but have no idea where to start?

“We don’t just say come and show up. Entrepreneurs can come in ahead of time; we’ll help them with their pitch, the kinds of things the judges are going to be looking for,” Crewe says.

Since last year’s event, the two EDOs have made some changes for this year. Along with the actual pitches, there will be a Lunch and Learn. The lunch part is pretty clear, while the learning part is because this year, they’re bringing in a speaker to talk about how to use digital marketing to grow a business. As Crewe states, “This isn’t necessarily just targeted at those entrepreneurs that show up for the event; it might be something current business owners would be interested in joining as well.”

May remarks, “If anybody is curious — whether they’re looking to open a business now or maybe they’re in business — see the speakers we’ve got, come in for the event. It’s going to be applicable to a very wide audience,.

Whether you’re making a pitch or you just want to come out and see what’s happening, it’s going to be a very engaging day.”

Ride helps new group, open house coming soon

or three consecutive years Colin and Ann Hunter have organized a trail ride and donated the proceeds to local equine clubs. Year one was Rapid City Chutes ’n’ Boots 4-H Club, last year was Rapid City Rodeo Association and this year funds went to the newly-formed Little Saskatchewan River Pony Club.

Led by Andrea Kroeker, Lynne Miller and Leslee Brown, the group had nine members when it formed in February; it will soon have a membership of 10.

This group is a branch of Canadian Pony Club, an international organization which accepts members aged six to 25. Their objective is to teach members how to care for and ride horses, with a focus on the English disciplines of show jumping, dressage and cross country. The group also teaches stable management, which is primarily led by Lynne and Leslee; Andrea is responsible for the riding lessons.

Little Saskatchewan River Pony Club has participated in fun days, quizzes and

clinics in Brandon and will complete at regional events, which could result in the members travelling elsewhere in this country to compete in national events. If you would like to join the club but are horseless, worry not, for the women have a few extra equines, called school horses, which can be used by members.

The group is holding an open house on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Momentum Acres (the farm of Steve and Andrea Kroeker northeast of Rivers); a sign will be posted at the driveway during the 1-3 p.m. event.

Everyone is encouraged to come see some riding lessons in action and watch other demonstrations.

As for the trail ride on Sunday, Sept. 25, it was considered a successful fundraiser despite the cold, rainy and windy day. Only six people participated in the three-hour journey through bush on the Hunter farm to the eastern shore of Lake Wahtopanah and back, but 35 people had supper. The pork on a bun meal was prepared by the pony club, which also served Gene and

Dotty Hyndman pies for dessert. The final pie (saskatoon) was auctioned off; an additional $25 was raised for the club through this sale.

While on the trail ride, riders made pit stops to draw cards for a poker hand; winning the poker derby portion of the event was Katie Hunter, daughter of hosts Colin and Ann. Besides the six riders playing the card game, another 22 silent riders

sent sheets along for their chance to win the $70 pot.

The final attraction of the afternoon was a penny raffle, co-ordinated by Chutes ’n’ Boots. While ride/poker fees were not donated to this 4-H club, they were able to keep all raffle proceeds for themselves.

Harvest highlights

By Heather Gray Riverdale Harvest held its annual general meeting on Wednesday, Sept.14 at Prairie Crocus Regional Library. If you are interested in joining the board, there are positions that still need to be filled; we are always looking for new members.

Riverdale Harvest food bank operates out of the basement of Zion Church. If you are in need of a hamper, Thursday mornings between 9:30 and 11 a.m. is the time to come in and get a hamper. The food bank is always in need of school snacks, canned goods (soup, beans, fruit, meat, tuna, etc.), pastas, peanut butter, cereal, and rice.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it would be lovely to have donations of ham, turkey and related Thanksgiving trimmings. All donations are always welcomed.

Rivers Bigway Foods is organizing Riverdale Harvest a promotion. If you buy a $5 or $10 hamper, your name will be entered into a draw for a $100 gift card there. Hampers will be given to Riverdale Harvest.

Each local church, Rivers Super Thrifty and Rivers Bigway all have donation buckets; please use them during our food drive up until Thanksgiving.

Our 40 MLAs in the Progressive Conservative caucus are preparing to get back to business in the house on Monday, Oct. 3, to continue working for Manitobans through the fall by carrying forward several important pieces of legislation.

Introduced by our government this past spring before the legislative assembly began its summer break, these bills are designed to better protect vulnerable Manitobans and to improve the democratic process for elections as well as for workplace union certifications.

Led by Premier Brian Pallister, we are continuing to return integrity, accountability and transparency to the Manitoba legislature. Hand in hand with our open government initiative, we will move forward with changes to the Elections Act to set fixed dates for the beginning of general election campaigns and for six-month time limits for the calling of byelections. Our new government is also proceeding to abolish the “vote tax” subsidy for political parties and to restore Manitobans’ right to vote on major tax increases.

For workers across the province, our government is taking our Labour Relations Act amendments into second reading. When passed into law, they will make workplace

union certification by secret-ballot votes mandatory. This change will allow workers the freedom to participate and to make decisions on union certification without fear of intimidation by their colleagues or union groups.

We are, as well, pushing forward this fall with a law to better protect children at risk. Our proposed Protecting Children (Information Sharing) Act would allow Child and Family Services, police agencies and schools to improve their sharing of critical information when it’s in kids’ best interests.

These are just some of the measures our new government is moving ahead with over the next several weeks to continue toward our goal of making Manitoba the most improved province in Canada. The summer is over — it’s time to roll up our sleeves and go to work.

RUBY GOTTFRIED After a short but hardfought battle with cancer, Ruby Evelyn Gottfried passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the age of 82 years. Mom was predeceased by her husband, our father, Frank, in 2014. She is survived by her daughters Jane (Trevor) Kusmack and Nicole (Gil) Roth; sons Randy, Darrell (Di Di), Jody (Kelly) and Dale (Cheryl); 12 grandchildren, 10 greatgrandchildren, sisters Winnie Anderson, Marjorie Thompson and brother Vernie (Marion) Curle.

Mom enjoyed trying out new recipes, playing cards and beating people at Scrabble.

She enjoyed all sorts of crafts. She also enjoyed the many committees she was involved with. To Mom, family was everything.

She was the heart, soul, rock and glue.

A come and go tea will be held at Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 75, 622 Second Avenue in Rivers on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 2-4 p.m. At Mom’s request, there will be a private graveside service.

The family would like to thank Dr. Anita Vermaak for the wonderful and compassionate care you gave our Mom over the years.

ETHEL IRENE FORTUNE (NEE WYATT) Mum passed away peacefully at Shoal Lake-Strathclair Health Centre on August 26, 2016. She was born near Melita, Manitoba on March 17, 1929. When she was still very young, the family moved to Cardale, Manitoba, where she took all her schooling, enjoying many sports including baseball, skating, hockey and in particular, basketball. She went on to Normal School in Winnipeg and became a teacher, later teaching at Poplar Grove and Cardale schools.

On October 8, 1949 she married Kenneth James Fortune, also from the Cardale area. They built a house across the yard from his parents near the Cardale Lakes and lived there all their married life, raising four children. Mum made the house a true home.

She always had a big garden, which led to canning, pickling, freezing and making jams and jellies. In particular, she loved to bake desserts, cakes and sweet things — much to the delight of her children and later her grandchildren who would always argue over who got to take home any leftovers! She was an excellent seamstress, making grad dresses for the girls and even a wedding dress. She loved her flowers and the yard. A favourite place was the cabin at Salt Lake where she enjoyed the family gatherings and campfires, as well as water skiing. In later years Mum loved to watch the grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all their sports and would hate if she had to miss a game.

Community and church were a very important part of her life and she took pleasure in helping out at the rink and any other community functions. Throughout her life she participated in the work of the church as a Sunday school teacher, in the choir, UCW, on the church board and in many other positions. She instilled a strong sense of commitment to community in all her children.

Dad passed away in 1989 and her oldest daughter, Shirley, in 1995.

Mum was a rock for us all to lean on at that time and all through our lives. The strength, courage and endurance of this little lady was an inspiration to us all. In 2010 she was in a serious car accident which no one expected her to survive, but she did. She continued to love and support us, bake goodies for us and be truly interested in all the happenings in the lives of her family and friends.

In 2011 Mum moved to Lilac Residence in Hamiota. She made many friends there, taking an interest in and participating in all the activities she could until her illness in January 2016.

Mum was predeceased by her husband Ken, daughter Shirley, son-in-law Arnold Rose, parents Tom and Lillian Wyatt, father- and mother-in-law Stan and Jean Fortune, brothers-in-law Graeme Shaw and Les Biccum, sister- and brother-in-law Irene and Rod Parker, and nephew Kerry Parker. She leaves to mourn her daughters Wendy Rose and Patti (Terry) McTavish, son Jim (Carol) Fortune, grandchildren Jason (Shauna) McTavish, Tara (Kevin) Pedersen, Tyler (Anne) McTavish, Ian Fortune (Melissa Chichlowski), Blair (Blair) Fortune; great-grandchildren Caitlin, Jana and Tristin McTavish, Lucas, Jorja and Josie Pedersen, Riley, Jax and Kaiden McTavish and Maxton Fortune, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews.

A celebration of Mum’s life was held at Cardale United Church August 30, 2016 with interment in Marney Cemetery. Minister was Rev. Doug Martindale. Pallbearers were grandchildren Jason, Tara, Tyler, Ian, Blair and great-grandson Lucas. Great-granddaughter Caitlin was soloist. Eulogy was given by grandsons Jason and Ian. We will miss Mum’s kindness, caring, thoughtfulness and unwavering belief that there is good in everyone. Pancakes from the principal L

By Sheila Runions Banner Staff ast week’s Rivers Banner announced a new principal at Rivers Elementary School. While he said he would “be busy flipping and serving pancakes,” the cooking duty was actually done by members of Rivers and Area Lions Club. However, Garnet Kinney, along with teacher Richard Graham, did serve the flapjacks. At the next station were volunteers Heather Carlisle and Craig Johnston who served sausages. Further down the line were teachers Bruce Helgeson and Mandy Johnston who were busy filling juice glasses or running to the start of the line to replenish plates and utensils. Six cases of sausages, totalling 1,000 links, were ordered by the school, which they served to nearly 300 people. The 75-minute supper was extended slightly because the line of people seemed to never end.

Garnet grew up in Brandon and graduated from Brandon University in 1995 with a bachelor of education. He began substitute teaching in the 1995/96 school term and became full-time the following season. In 2006 he began a two-year course with University of Gonzaga, Wash. from which he graduated in 2008 with a masters of arts in leadership and administration. In total, he has spent 18 years teaching in the Prairie provinces, with the last eight spent as a vice-principal in Saskatchewan. This is his first term as a principal, which he says has “always been a goal, it’s a natural progression. In eight years I learned lots about school administration and I was ready for a leadership opportunity. When I met with the trustees for the interview, this just felt right.”

So he packed up his family this summer and “moved back home” to Brandon, from where he commutes. He leads a staff of 24 and says they are “great! My role is about the kids and the staff; I want to build on what’s already happening here. Just look at them, everybody is pitching in with the supper; they are just great staff, they really are. I’m so proud of our staff in how they worked to make all of this happen. To be honest, I have been waiting for this [serving supper] all day. It’s been a really good turn out for our first event.”

The supper was free but a bowl was set out for donations, which will be used for the school’s daily breakfast program. Garnet says the Sept. 27 donations collected at the school’s annual open house and book fair were “generous and we then donated $100 to the Lions Club in recognition of all of the hard work and support they provided with the food preparation. A huge thank you to Michelle Maxwell and her foods and nutrition class at Rivers Collegiate; they helped out by pre-cooking the sausages for the supper.”

The breakfast program at Rivers Elementary School it open to all students, regardless of age or economic status.

As Garnet says, “Please emphasize that breakfast club is open to all students and everyone is welcome, and we would love to have volunteers help out in the mornings with the program.”
