n Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023, the Oak Lake and Area Lions Club held their annual all you can eat Manitoba pickerel fish fry at the Oak Lake Community Hall.

From 4:30 to 7pm, anyone could head down to the hall to enjoy pickerel fillets, French fries, baked potatoes, coleslaw, buns, and Randy’s Famous Baked Beans. For the fish there

was homemade tartar sauce. To finish this delicious meal, dessert was vanilla ice cream with caramel or chocolate sauce.

The place was packed with over 300 people who came out to enjoy this meal and help raise money for this fundraiser in support of Lions Club for their many projects that better the community and surrounding area. There was a 50/50 draw.

So many Lions Club members and volunteers worked hard to make this event a success. Even the president of the Club was busy serving the pickerel to the eager crowd.

n Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Winnipeg the Rivers Police Chief, Lon Schwartz received the award and medals for excellence in law enforcement from the minister of Justice and Attorney General of Manitoba, Matt Wiebe.

During the banquet, the award and medals were presented to Lon for his exceptional contributions made for the betterment of his community and Manitoba Law Enforcement.

Ingredients: 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces 1/4 c all-purpose flour 1 large bay leaf 1/2 tsp salt 1 clove minced garlic 1/2 tsp ground black pepper 1 tsp ground paprika 1-1/2 c beef broth 1 pkg brown gravy 4 med sliced carrots 1 stalk chopped celery 3 med diced potatoes 1 med chopped onion Directions: 1) Gather ingredients.

2) Place meat in slow cooker.

3) Mix flour, salt, and pepper together in a small bowl. Pour over meat and stir until meat is coated.

4) Add beef broth, carrots, potatoes, onion, celery, gravy powder, paprika, garlic, and bay leave; stir to combine.

5) Cover, and cook until beef is tender enough to cut with a spoon, on Low for 8 to 12 hours, or on High for 4 to 6 hours.

6) Serve hot and enjoy!

Justice Minister Matt Wiebe issues statement on MPI’s strike settlement

strike at MPI. The mandate we gave to MPI has allowed parties to come together at the negotiating table and settle the strike.

MPI’s bargaining team reached a deal that was fair, measured, and reasonable for these hardworking people while also demonstrating responsibility to Manitoba ratepayers.

The deal includes general wage increases of three per cent in the first year, and three per cent, 2.9 per cent, and 2.8 per cent in the second, third, and fourth years. Also included in the deal is a $1,800 signing bonus, in addition to retention adjustment percentages for years three and four and two-week lump sum pay for striking workers in consideration of the government’s transition period where bargaining could not take place.

L

ike many of you, I saw the accounts of an airstrike that severely damaged a hospital in Gaza and killed many who were either in or near the building. Thumbnail images of the victims’ families affected me deeply. I felt no anger to anyone-just a deep sense of sadness that this conf lict could have gotten so out of hand so quickly.

The reactions from those involved in the conf lict were as expected. Hamas blamed the Israeli Air Force. Israeli spokespeople said: “We didn’t do it.” Independent new media on the scene said: “We know what happened. But it’s too soon to say who did it or why.”

Scenes like the one I’ve just described highlight the other victims of war. On November 11th, we honor those killed in action for their sacrifices; and we should. We pray for an end to war and for peace to come to our world; and we should. But how often do we think of and pray for the other victims? Their sacrifices were (and are) as real as those of the military personnel who lost their lives while in active combat. Who are they; and why do I believe we should include them in our Remembrance Day prayers?

Topping my list are the families of the military personnel killed in action. Theirs is a grief that may never end. They will never forget the day when, either in person, by telegram or by mail, they learned that a family member had been killed in action overseas. They will relive that day every year, as they join us in two minutes of silence on November 11th.

Next on my list are the casualties’ comrades in arms. They will go through the rest of their lives wondering why their buddies were killed but they were spared. I doubt that they will ever get a satisfactory answer to those questions.

Then I think about the civilian casualties. They did nothing to deserve the fate they experienced.

They just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught in the crossfire.

Their families and the communities in which they live will bury their dead and support each other in their mutual grief. But they will never get over the anger they feel toward those who started the war that produced their pain and loss.

Finally, I think of those who lost jobs and possessions when their homes and the places they worked were bombed. I think of those whose crops were f lattened by tanks; whose fields were dotted with huge craters caused by bombs and who lost access to sources of food, clothing and medical care when roads and railroads were destroyed.

What took minutes to destroy can take decades to fully restore (if it ever is).

I include in this final category those who must clean up after the battles are over-those who collect destroyed tanks, trucks and other hardware; those who clean up areas where oil, gasoline or anti-freeze have been spilled; and those with the most dangerous job of all-sweeping areas for land mines and unexploded armaments. We may never know how many people lost their lives while doing these and other similar risky jobs.

This year, my Remembrance Day prayers will include these people-the other victims of war. I hope you will also offer prayers for them. If we, through our prayers, can prevent even one war with its accompanying loss of life and civilian tragedy, our prayers will not have been in vain. We will have accomplished much.

I just want to cry!

A

s Remembrance Day arrives again this weekend, my mind is filled with a mixture of memories and thoughts for the future.

In my childhood days, there were no direct memories of WWII as I was not born until 1948. Yes, I am a baby boomer. I do have very early memories of my brother serving in the Korean War and I did have the honour of touring Korea for two weeks several years ago. It gave me a great personal satisfaction that I stood on the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea and phoned my brother to let him know I was there and that the Korean men with me wanted to extend their thanks through me for his fighting to free South Korea. I also told those men that as a child I, along with thousands of other Canadian kids, had little pink cardboard coin boxes where we put in pennies, nickels and dimes to send to people in need including Korean children.

Two of the men shed a few tears as they said they remembered that missionary money being used in Korea to send Canadian dried milk powder and as little kids, that was all their parents had at times to send to school for them to eat.

I came across a quote from Hawkeye in the M.A.S.H TV series. It goes like this Hawkeye- “War isn’t hell. War is war and Hell is hell and of the two, war is a lot worse” Father Francis John Patrick Mulcahy- “How do you figure that.

Hawkeye?”

Hawkeye- “Easy Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?

Mulcahy- “Sinners, I believe Hawkeye- “Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. But war is chock full of them. Little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.”

Now that is quite a quote but it does contain a lot of truth.

At the present time there are twelve or fourteen wars going on in the world. Men, women and children are being killed by the dozens every day in conflicts around the world.

The difference between ancient wars and current wars is that we see more of what is happening and we see it before the governments can gloss over the tragedies and atrocities.

a surprise party for her put on by her husband. They have three kids and with a good sized crew of their friends in attendance, there were 14 kids under the age of 10 in the house.

As I sat back and listened to the joy and laughter of all the kids and the banter of the parents, as one little boy crawled up on the couch to play with his car with me, I almost broke down and cried. The only thing that stopped me was that it would have been too hard to explain and I didn’t want to interrupt the flow of pure joy in that home. I wanted to cry out for all the people who are suffering from war and destruction today and who haven’t much hope of celebrating a birthday party even if they will make it to their next birthday.

I wanted to cry, but I also wanted to scream at all “the brass” in the world, both in the past, present and future who have caused or will cause so much harm, a WWII veteran friend of mine says, “It’s stupid arrogance” when he he speaks of the decisions to inflict war on others.

Note I say inflict war. I blame invading countries as they never seem to understand that old hurts and old wars and old and almost forgotten national boundaries shouldn’t matter. On the current war situations I am most familiar with, namely Gaza and Ukraine, the lines are fairly clear.

Hamas has been invading Israel with terrorist attacks for 75 years and Russia has been stupidly trying to re-establish an old empire of the past.

Enough already, be it Gaza or Ukraine or any other war-torn county in the world. People, families, food production and economic activity are

far more important.

I know I am on a bit of a rant, but hasn’t the United Nations failed us all? They go on and on about a somewhat elusive climate change theory, hoodwinking us all and leading us along a path of unreachable goals, all the while they can’t put their foot down on aggressor countries. To me, the United Nations seems like a colossal waste of money if they can’t rein in invading countries.

I guess we have to look a bit closer at the ‘brass’, Hawkeye talked about.

I think he meant military leaders and they are to blame along with their bosses, the politicians.

The excuse is they all get swept up in some form of extremism.

Sometimes it’s communism, often it’s religion and storing up old hurts both real and imagined.

The problem is usually based in some form of religion and that is any belief system where mankind is reaching out to God or trying to be God. Christianity isn’t supposed to be a religion as rather than mankind reaching out to God, Christianity is supposed to be God reaching out to mankind. The Christian church got that arrangement backwards many times in history and created a lot of wars themselves.

Can we ever put war away? I don’t know if we ever will but as we remember the sacrifices of so many people on Remembrance Day, let us hope and pray that we do.

A

single line from the ever-moving ‘In Flander’s Fields’ has me travelling back to Juno Beach and Omaha Beach in the summer of 2017. The stop was only for a few hours, crowded in between family time and tourist things. It was a welcome change of pace for me. Slowed me down, helped me re-assess life, my life, and what is of lasting importance.

I was certainly moved by the memorials that have been constructed, they are imaginative, moving and thought provoking. Sitting through visuals at the museum was thought provoking and made the scenes come alive. I walked the water’s edge in solitude and silence. Never truly alone, for I could feel the life forces that wandered there with me. It was a time for deep thinking.

Had I been an abled bodied individual in those war years, and I’m thinking the First and Second World Wars, would I have been willing to serve? Would I have been willing to see my partner or my child, or a class mate or a neighbour lad leave all that was familiar to take up arms and go to war? I was born in 1946, those conflicts were fresh and very real memories. We saw some of the effects in the lives of our community members. There was Mr. Carter, the owner of a small service station, who walked with difficulty, ankles almost crossed, because of the effects of time in the trenches. And there was the school bus driver, Mr. Kee, who served alongside his father. Mr. Kee, senior had served in the first world conflict, and could not stay home when his son enlisted for the second war. Knowing the dangers, knowing the horrors, he lied about his age so that he could serve with his son. The senior later lost first one leg, and then the other, also delayed effects of his service. And then there was a neighbour who stopped in when he should not have been driving, and with reserves lowered, sat at the kitchen table and wept over the sights he had seen and the deeds he had done.

I do know that my life is so much better for the fights that have been fought for freedom and liberty. I do know I appreciate those who served, those who serve, and those who wait while loved ones serve. I am privileged . I have had access to education, to recreation, and to procreation.

I have had the security of a roof over my head and food in my belly. And I wonder, why me?

These were some of the thoughts that I jotted down at the day’s end. These are some of the thoughts that I still embrace each year. I’m not one to buy souvenirs when I travel, however, I picked up a post card at Juno Beach. It depicts, in dark silhouette, armed and weary men, walking single file down rough hewn stairs, with the words ‘Dans Leurs Pas- They Walk With You’. May we never forget those who placed/place our safety and freedom above their own. Thank you for all defenders of what is right and good.

Police received a report of an ongoing issue involving a young driver operating their vehicle in a dangerous manner while departing the Rivers Collegiate. Charges are pending.

Halloween night was a calm night for police. All the ghouls and goblins were well behaved. Police attended the Monster Mash to hand out candy to the youth.

Rivers Police Cadets was held on Wednesday Night. There were 15 youth in attendance and a good time was had by all. A friendly reminder Cadets is every other Wednesday. Police will attempt to put something out on social media the day prior.

Police were dispatched to a 911 hang up. The dispatcher advised 911 had received 7 calls from the number. Police attended and learned a 10-year-old child had been making the calls. The child was spoken to about the importance of only using 911 in emergency situations as their calls could make the line busy for someone that requires legitimate assistance from Police/EMS/Fire.

During a routine patrol police stopped a vehicle travelling below the limit with a driver acting abnormally. Police found that the driver was suspended, and the vehicle did not have valid registration. A ticket was issued for operation of a motor vehicle while suspended. Discretion was used, no ticket was issued for not having valid registration and the vehicle was not towed.

Remembrance Day Services

During a routine traffic stop a driver was found to be unlawfully transporting cannabis. Police would like to remind the public that the regulations regarding the transportation of cannabis are the sane as the transportation of liquor. It must not be open and stored in a location that is not within easy access of the driver or passengers.

A search warrant was executed on rural property following an investigation into stolen property. Several items believed to be stolen where recovered. Be sure to check to keep an eye on our social media as we will be asking the public to assist in identifying the potential owners of the property.

Police issued a speeding ticket to a male driver for travelling at 70 Km/h in a posted 50 Km/h zone.

Winnipeg Police Service executed an arrest warrant on a female that was on conditions to reside in the are of the Riverdale RM.

Just in Case Workshop well received

The Rivers Legion was a busy place on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, as 48 people gathered to learn, listen and ask questions about the many details involved in getting one’s affairs in order, “Just in Case”. Using many true stories about people’s experiences, presenter and author of Just in Case, Elaine Lozkinski from Saskatoon carefully guided the group through ten areas of one’s final affairs.

This included information about writing of wills, roles of executors in a will, roll of power of attorney, recording of financial information, health care directives, choosing of a health proxy, estate information and transition, funeral/memorial arrangements, documentation of life history and events, role and choices of philanthropy and charitable donations, family information, pet care, housing, retirement plans and de-cluttering and the vital need to record and document online accounts and passwords.

All the information was somewhat overwhelming, but a workbook that was included with the workshop can be used to go back over the information. The workbook also includes worksheets where one can record decisions that have been made.

The presenter emphasized the need to seek out professional help from lawyers, financial/estate planning institutions, doctors, accountants, etc. in getting one’s affairs in order. The argument of not making these decisions because it costs too much, was quickly debunked by the presenter. Not having these affairs in order puts one estate in ‘intestate’, meaning that an independent group makes these decisions and divides property in a hierarchy of a series of relatives predetermined by the provincial courts. These kinds of situations usually do not end well.

The presenter frequently encouraged the workshop participants to have many conversations with family/ friends about one’s wishes and then to document decisions and let someone know where the documents are.

There should be no surprises at the time of illness or death.

By Patricia Hanbidge Let’s grow sprouts! Home-grown sprouts are a healthy addition to a salad, a sandwich or just about anything else. It is also a great way to get that gardening fix that we need in spite of cold outside conditions. Growing sprouts is inexpensive, nutritious and easy. One could go so far to say that pound for pound, sprouts are perhaps the most nutritious food there is from the dollar value perspective. Sprouts are the most concentrated and truly natural sources of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids known. Better yet, they can be grown indoors in any climate and are ready to eat in only a few days. These tiny, easy-to-digest plants are at their peak of nutritional value, as the seed releases all of its stored nutrients in a burst of vitality in the journey to becoming a full sized plant.

You could look at sprouts as a powerful battery of nutrients that can rival citrus fruits in vitamin C and beef in protein and actually surpass almost any other known food source in completeness!

The challenge of growing sprouts is pretty low. It is easy for almost anyone who wishes to enjoy fresh and natural food year round. You just need to attend to your babies twice each day.

There are many sources for the seeds that are suitable for sprouters. You may purchase sprout seeds in healthfood stores, specialty shops and many other mail-order houses and shops.

A basic sprouting system is simply any receptacle that is large enough to hold the finished sprouts, but not made of wood or metal. Since the sprouting container must be kept covered, anything that comes with its own lid is a good choice. I simply use canning jars of various sizes

depending on the amount of seed I am sprouting. However, you can also purchase a little grow unit from many of our seed supply houses, including Mumm’s.

The instructions for growing are simple. Simply find a jar or other receptacle, a bit of fine netting, a rubber band, clean fresh water and of course some seeds to germinate.

If you have chosen to sprout in a jar you can soak the seed in the same jar. If not, any sterile container will do. Use about one cup of water to every tablespoon of seed. Soak the seeds for a short time to get that germination started and then rinse and drain your seeds two to three times daily. I like to invert the jar on an angle in a small bowl to allow the excess water to drain. Last but not least, enjoy!

Drain and allow to dry for a few hours and store in the fridge until consumed.

Kenton Community Enterprises (KCE), a group that oversees the operation of the Kenton rink, Memorial hall, ball park, campground, and bandstand/park area, has recently received a sizeable donation.

We would like to send a heartfelt thank-you to the Morton Family of Hamiota for their donation which will be used to help purchase a new tractor. This will be used at the rink as well as on the nature trail and in the campground area.

Kenton is also fortunate to have community members willing to volunteer their time to help develop other areas as well. One group in particular is working to convert the tennis court area into a place where pickleball, badminton, basketball, and road hockey can be played.

KCE continues to upgrade the beach and are hoping to have a new dock in place next summer. First, however, we have to get through the winter months.

Submitted Rivers Banner The Cross of Sacrifice was constructed in 1923 in memory of the men killed in W WI and later dedicated to the memory of the men killed in W WII. The Cross of Sacrifice was first placed in the Oak Lake Cemetery.

In the late 1930’s, the Cross was moved to the tow n pa rk . A not her level was added to the cross with the names of those killed in W WII. In 1972, the Cross was moved to its present location in the yard of the Legion Hall. The following is a list of the names that are engraved on the monument.

Private Charles Claudius Piault was from the Oak Lake District. He was a member for the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion. Though he hated war, felt the call to enlist in 1914. He was true to his convictions and had a high sense of duty. He wrote in a letter to a friend as he embarked for overseas, “I go willingly, but not gladly.” Following his term of active service, he was killed in action in France, August 18, 1918 and buried at the Monchy British Cemetery, Monchy-Le-Preux.

In Charles’ will he left a legacy to Oakwood School. With the efforts of the patriotic citizens in Oak Lake, the Oakwood Memorial Scholarship came to be in memory of those lost to war.

REMEMBRANCE DAY Alexander Picton Brereton was born in Oak River, MB on November 13, 1892. During the First World War he served with the 8th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force.

On 9 August 1918, near Warvillers in France, Corporal Brereton’s platoon suddenly came under fire from six German machine guns while in an exposed position. Brereton immediately charged one of the machine guns on his own, shooting one member of the crew, bayoneting another, and compelling nine other enemy soldiers to surrender. The rest of the platoon, inspired by his example, assaulted, and captured the five remaining machine gun positions. For his actions on this day, Corporal Brereton was awarded the Victoria Cross. Brereton died in Calgary, Alberta on 11 June 1976.

Jean A. (Houston) Daniel, from St. Francis, MB, moved to Kenton, MB, with her parents and family. Four of Jean’s brothers enlisted. In April 1943, Jean enlisted with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. Her areas of operation were Fort Osborne, Winnipeg, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and Kitchener, ON. She retired from service in March of 1946, returned to Kenton, and married Jim Daniel, an army veteran. Jim and Jean raised their family on a farm near Kenton.

Patrick Wells CD served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 37 years. His first posting was with the 1 Battalion PPCLI from 1972 to 1982. He was then transferred to the First Service Battalion until he retired from the regular force in 1993. He enlisted with the 26 Field Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery reserve unit in Brandon as part of the training cadre and finally retired to civilian life in 2009. During his regular force years he was posted to numerous locations overseas and in Canada. His favorite was in Cyprus. Like many soldiers Patrick faced many different situations, some good, some bad and some he can’t or won’t talk about. He is an honorable man who served his country well.

REMEMBRANCE DAY Albert “Bert” Kitchener Hunt – Bert was born on September 3, 1916, in Lenore, MB, the third of seven brothers and seven sisters. Bert farmed near Kenton before joining the Canadian Army, serving in Italy, France and Germany. He received war medals and stars, including the Volunteer, Defence, Italy, WWII, and Victory Europe. Corporal Hunt passed away from a stroke in 1973, leaving behind his wife Sylvia and four grown children.

YAD ECNARBMEMER Harold Earl “Timer” Hyndman was the youngest boy of six children was born in Oak River, MB, on Nov. 10 1925. When war broke out in Europe, his three older brothers enlisted. After his 18th birthday he went to Military Depot #10 in Winnipeg and signed up with the tank corps of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, 2nd Division. Timer approached a recruiter for the Royal Winnipeg Rifles (RWR) and was assured that he could be in Europe after only 6 weeks of Basic Training at Camp Shilo. After further training in England, his RWR troop ship was in the middle of the English Channel in May 1945 when V-Day was declared in Europe. The Royal Winnipeg Rifles were reassigned to be part of the Occupation Army and transferred to Norderney, one of the Frisian Islands in the North Sea off the German coast. He worked as a company Medic for another year when he was ordered back to Canada. He reported to Military District #10 in Winnipeg and was discharged in June 1946. Timer joined the Rapid City Legion Branch #49 in Rapid City in the summer of 1946, and has been a Legion member ever since, receiving his 75-Year pin in 2021.

The Fallen in Afghanistan The war in Afghanistan (2001–2014) was Canada’s longest war and its first significant combat engagement since the Korean War (1950–1953). More than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces members served in the 12-year campaign. The war killed 165 Canadians — 158 soldiers and 7 civilians. Many Canadian veterans of the war in Afghanistan suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Dear Editor, I lost my right arm on October 18, 1944, while serving with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment in Italy. I was staked at a farmhouse that had a children’s treehouse located nearby. In the treehouse was a sniper who kept shooting at our boys. A tank then came which shot out shells, the shrapnel hitting my right arm.

When I returned home from the war, I joined The War Amps and have been a member ever since. This Association was started by First World War amputee veterans to help each other adapt to their new reality as amputees.

Having just recently turned 100, I am reflecting this Remembrance Day upon all those who served in my regiment and never returned home. Their absence weighs on me and it is essential that we keep their memory alive. I take comfort in knowing that The War Amps and its young members will continue to keep spreading the message long into the future.

The sacrifices of those who served (and continue to serve) deserve to be remembered and honoured. Each Remembrance Day serves as a poignant reminder of the t remendous price “A salute to those Remembering Our paid by these brave who served” individuals. Their Heroes selflessness and courage continue to resonate, and it is our duty to ensure that their legacy endures.

Call to Order. Chairperson Brent Fortune called the meeting to order at 1:30 pm in the Outreach Meeting Room of the Hamiota District Health Centre. Self introductions followed.

Adoption of Minutes The minutes of the October 17/22 annual meeting of the Hamiota District Health Centre Foundation Inc. were read by Bev Bennett.

Motion – Moved by, Murray Lockhart, seconded by LeeAnn Haggarty “That we approve the minutes of the October 17/22 Annual Public meeting of the Hamiota District Health Centre Foundation Inc. as circulated and read.” Carried Chairperson’s Report - Brent Fortune read his report which summarized activities and initiatives of the Foundation over the past year.

Presentation of Investment Portfolio - Vaughn Wilson read the letter regarding our investment portfolio as prepared by Kevin Brugger of Brugger Wealth Management. Some discussions followed regarding current term deposit interest rates available.

Financial Statements. - Vaughn Wilson reviewed a draft of the financial statements of the Hamiota District Health Centre Foundation Inc. for the period ending March 31,2023 from the Auditors reflected a surplus on operations of $12,781.

Election of Directors - Two positions are open for the Hamiota Municipality for the 2024/25 - 2026/27 (3-year term). By Manitoba Government Today, thousands of Manitoba young people will join parents, caregivers, and family members in their workplaces as they take part in Take Our Kids to Work Day, announced Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Nello Altomare.

“Take Our Kids to Work Day is a great opportunity for Grade 9 students in Manitoba to get first-hand experience in the working world,” said Altomare.

“For many young people, it is their first experience participating in the workforce. The hands-on experiences are so helpful as students begin planning their future careers.”

Each year, thousands of Manitoba students participate in Take Our Kids to Work Day. Students go to work with parents, caregivers, or other family members to learn about a wide range of professions including government, law enforcement, medical, manufacturing, technology, farming, trades and other services that contribute to Manitoba’s economy, noted the minister.

During Take Our Kids to Work Day, students participate in supervised activities that allow them to experience a real working environment while maintaining students’ safety. In the following days at school, students complete in-class assignments and discuss their experiences so their classmates can learn more about a wide range of careers.

“Parents and caregivers get to introduce their children to their colleagues,” said Altomare. “It’s a fun

Since it began in 1994, well over 200,000 Manitoba students have participated in Take Our Kids to Work Day. The Students Commission of Canada is

the national not-for profit sponsor for the 2023 Take Our Kids to Work Day. This year’s theme, ‘Everyone belongs here,’ echoes the diverse nature of Manitoba’s workforce, noted the minister.

T

he Halloween two-person bonspiel kicked off the curling season for Oak River. On Nov. 3 to Nov 4, the Oak River Curling Club hosted the bonspiel and ended the event with fireworks at 7pm on Saturday. Everyone said the fireworks were the best ones yet. The fireworks were watched for miles around.

They had about 60 people at the event.

The winners of the bonspiel were Ashley Black and Cam Argue, second place went to Melody Stewart and Lindsey Jack, and third place went to Randy and Kahli Kuculym. They had 12 rinks in total and tons of fun.

Greg Black won for best Halloween costume. He was dressed as a masked wrestler.

It was a great way to start the local curling season and the curling club are all looking forward to doing it again next year.

Layne Anderson stood tall between the pipes making 41 saves including a penalty shot as the Jets came out of Neepawa with a 6-2-win. Jets now stand 3-0 for the season.

Jaxon Heeney continued his hot start with 2 goals and an assist. Joben Smith, Cam Ramsay, Riley Boles, and Brock Paddock added singles.

Josh Belcher helped with 3 assists.

The Jets return to home ice Saturday night at 7:30 when the Gladstone Lakers make their first ever visit to RCC.

Goal! Rivers Jets Lepp score 4th goal in the first period of first game in weekend tournament play.

Rivers MInor Hockey hosted their first tournament of the season from Nov 3 to 5 at the Riverdale Community Centre. Rivers has two U13 Jets teams that were playing in the tournament, Rivers Lepp and Rivers Basaraba. Rivers hosted teams from Elm Creek, Brandon, Neepawa, Reston, Souris and Roblin. The teams were split into two four team divisions and played three games each against the other teams in their divisions.

Neepawa and Rivers Lepp were both 2 and 0 heading into their Sunday afternoon match to determine who would win the A pool with Neepawa winning the game 3-1.

Reston defeated Souris on Sunday 5-4 to win the B Pool.

Rivers Minor Hockey teams also ran a Progressive 50/50 and raffle tables at each of their tournaments that work as a major fundraiser for both the individual teams and the Association.

It is the start of what will be a busy year for Rivers Minor Hockey that will end with the Under 11 Provincial Championships March 1 to 3.

The Sabres won their games against the Teulon Saints semi finals but were defeated by the Ste. Rose Celtics in the final games placing them second in the tournament. Go Rams!!

Elton Sabres JV Girls Volleyball The Elton Sabres JV Girls volleyball team played in the MacGregor JV Girls volleyball tournament on Nov. 4. They placed fourth in the round robin in pool two. The Sabres won their games against the Lac du Bonnet Chargers in the consolation finals but were defeated by the Landmark 96ers in the final games.

They defeated the Warren Wildcats in the consolation quarter finals and were defeated by the Gabrielle-Roy Les Roys in the semi-finals.

Hamiota/Shoal Lake (Co-op) JV Boys Volleyball The Hamiota/Shoal Lake (Co-op) JV Boys volleyball hosted the Hamiota Huskies J V Boys Tournament on Nov. 3 to 4.

They placed first in the round robin in pool one.

The Huskies won their games against the Souris Sabres in the quarter finals and defeated the Warren Wildcats Blue & Yellow in the semi finals. They headed to the play Carberry Cougars and lost in the finals. This lead them to play Goose Lake High School for a second chance at playing Carberry in the finals. With an extremely tight score of 26-24 and 22-25 Goose Lake High School defeated the Huskies.

Oak Lake Care Centre 3rd Annual “Jump into Christmas” Craft Sale

n Saturday, Nov. 4, from 10am to 3pm this season Christmas Craft Sales started. At the Oak Lake Community Hall and Ox Cart Station, 24 vendors set up their tables to get ready for the crowds to fulfill their Christmas shopping needs.

Close to 200 people came out to enjoy the sale.

Lunch was served at the Community Hall. Lunch was included in the table rental for all the vendors too. There was also a raffle table, door prize and 50/50 draw for those who wanted to participate.

Hats off to the organizers for all the hard work that went into the day to make such a wonderful craft sale. “I would say that this was likely one of the most successful sales we have had since I started organizing them,” say Bev Rousson, one of the organizers of the event. The event helps raise funds for the daycare in town.
