n Oct 5, the Haller Haunted Forest opened for its first night in 2023. This haunting was started by Irene Fidler four years ago. This year it ran Oct 5, 6 and 7 and will be running Oct 12, 13 and 14 from 7 to 9:30pm.

Irene decided to extend her hours due to all the amazing visitors she received her first weekend open. The forest is not recommended for children under twelve years old.

The Haller Haunted Forest is located about ten miles east of Rivers on highway 25 and 1/2 mile north on road 110W or three miles east of highway 270 or two miles west of highway 10.

The cost of attending is $8 per person with proceeds going to Westman Dreams for Kids. Irene wanted it to be affordable but also be able to make money for the charity.

scare people. I have gone to lots of haunted houses, etc and I am very hard to scare. My goal is to scare the pants off of people in a way that I would like to be scared,” says Irene.

She started small four years ago with her daughter. Last year, Irene solely took over as her daughter had to bow out.

She moved it to its present location and expanded it.

“I funded it by myself, but I did get some wonderful donations of supplies this year of tin, metal, lumber, outside hand wash station for the porta potty, gravel for an approach and some body parts,” says Irene. A full list is posted at the forest entrance of everyone who donated and helped. She wants to say a huge thank you to the volunteers who are willing to suffer the cold for about three hours to work the gate and dress up to scare the guests. None of this would be possible without them.

Space will be limited on Friday Oct. 12 as the Manitoba 4-H will be bring 60 4-H members from across the province to the haunted forest at 8pm.

Butternut Squash Soup This is a thick, rich butternut squash soup with tons of f lavour. Something I whipped up off the top of my head, with things I had on hand. Super easy, quick, and a great way to use squash. An instant hit at my house.

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons butter 1 small onion, chopped 1 stalk celery, chopped 1 medium carrot, chopped 2 medium potatoes, cubed 1 medium butternut squash - peeled, seeded, and cubed 1 (32 f luid ounce) container chicken stock salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Directions: 1) Gather all ingredients.

2) Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat, and cook onion, celery, carrot, potatoes, and squash until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Pour in enough chicken stock to cover vegetables.

3) Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low, cover pot, and simmer until all vegetables are tender, about 40 minutes.

4) Transfer soup to a blender and p r o c e s s u nt i l smooth. Return to the pot and mix in any remaining stock to reach desired con s i s t enc y.

Season with salt and pepper.

5) Serve hot and enjoy!

Isaac the Ox is Oak Lake’s most famous resident. He can be found in the heart of Oak Lake next to his Red River cart. Isaac has also helped many motorcycle club members earn a patch for visiting 20 monuments.

In 1988, the Oak Lake Lions Club commissioned the building of a statue to be the official town mascot - an ox pulling a Red River cart, an important symbol of pioneer settlement.

uring the summer months, the highway between McBride and Prince George, BC takes travelers through some of the most beautiful country in the world. It also allows them to see how nature renews itself following a wildfire or other natural disaster.

I lived in Prince George for four years and drove that route at least six times a year. I will never forget one scene from those trips. I first passed it one year after it had been infested with a beetle that laid its eggs in the bark of spruce trees. There was only one way to keep the infestation from destroying the whole forest; and that was to cut down every tree in the infested area. Forestry officials determined the extent of the infestation and the work began. In a very short time, not one tree of any kind was left standing.

But now the real work began. The area was tilled.

A grid was laid out and crews of summer workers planted seedlings to replace the trees that were cut down. Later that year, as I drove by that site, I saw a hillside covered with brilliant pink flowers. In a few weeks, the flowers were replaced with huge fluffy heads that looked like dandelions; only a dozen times larger. These plants, I would soon learn, were called fireweed.

When I first saw these plants, I wondered why they hadn’t been sprayed. I couldn’t understand what useful purpose these “weeds,” as I called them, could serve.

I was quickly shown the error in my thoughts. These plants, I learned, were nature’s way of protecting tree seedlings during their initial growing stages. They helped trap and hold the moisture. They protected the seedlings from the hot summer sun. And, being legumes, they took harmful elements from the air and converted them into nutrients that helped the seedlings grow into healthy trees. Once the seedlings were big enough to survive on their own, the fireweed stopped growing. Its seeds lay dormant in the place where they fell; waiting until those trees were either harvested for lumber or destroyed in a wildfire, after which they would sprout and grow to protect a new batch of seedlings.

But this Alberta farm boy had much more to learn about BC forests and forestry. One of the first things I learned was that forest fires, like those that have swept through parts of BC this year, aren’t all bad.

They release tree seeds from the covers that protect them and removing the thick layer of thatch that has covered the ground so that the seeds can fall to the ground and begin to grow. I was quite impressed by what I heard.

These processes have been with us since the beginning of time. They are God’s way of helping nature renew itself-of helping it bounce back after natural disasters. In a perfect world, such things wouldn’t exist. But ours is not a perfect world. Fires, f loods, droughts, famines and disease-these are common to life in all parts of our world.

We try to control them; but quickly discover that we can’t. All we can do is sit quietly and watch in amazement as the earth renews itself-something I did many times while on the road between McBride, BC and Prince George-and something I continue to do whenever I see the new life that comes when an abundant rain ends a lengthy dry spell.

God has built this resilience into his creation. It is one of His many blessings-blessings I am counting during this Thanksgiving season.

Beware of the elites

A

fter the Oct. 3 Manitoba election, there were some very happy people and some not so happy. In fact, a fair amount has been reported about how the Progressive Conservative Party, how it fared so badly and why.

To understand why the PCs lost the election and why there has been so much criticism of the PC leader, the party management and the campaign, one has to go back to at least 1983. In that era, the once very strong PC party lost to the NDP lead by Howard Pawley. The PC Party lead by Sterling Lyon had been defeated and a leadership race was set in place. In those days, the leadership was decided by a delegate convention and the candidate who got the most delegates from the 57 constituencies became the leader.

Gary Filmon of Winnipeg won out over two rural candidates, Clayton Manness and Brian Ransom.

I can’t speak for earlier leadership races, but the party took a long time to solidify behind Filmon. Eventually it did and he ended up serving a long time as premier.

W hen Filmon resig ned, the ever elusive party elite, gathered behind Stu Murray of Winnipeg and Murray was acclaimed. He never became premier. I was at the convention where Murray was voted out by the delegates and the wheels came off of what was left of the PC bus. The PC elite decided that a young, bright lawyer named Hugh McFadyen should be leader.

He won by a lot of votes. He was opposed by Ron Schuler and (full disclosure here) by myself, Ken Waddell.

Right in the Centre Ken Waddell elections, both losses, where he only got about 20 seats, nine short of a majority. He resigned on election night.

The party toyed around with a leadership race for about a year but the only candidate who came forward was Brian Pallister. The PC elite didn’t like it, but Pallister had a lot of grassroots support, had experience as both an MLA and MP and he was acclaimed. He won two elections and then resigned after being deemed as unapproachable and autocratic.

The PC elite decided that long time MLA and cabinet minisister, Heather Stefanson would make a good leader. Their plans were almost upended by former MP Shelly Glover, who only fell short by a few votes from upsetting the apple cart.

Stefanson prevailed by a few votes and served as premier.

The PC Party’s problem is that the PC elite still rules the roost.

So, what’s the problem with that?

The problem is that when the PC elite get their way, they almost always fail. The only leader that became premier in an election was Pallister and he certainly wasn’t wanted by the PC elite. They hated him really, because he was a strong leader. Too strong actually in the

end.

The PC Party’s problem is that while they call themselves a grassroots party, they have let the grassroots shrivel and die. The PC elite make sure of that by assuring that the party process doesn’t thrive.

Here’s how it’s supposed to work. There are supposed to be 57 constituency boards of about 10 people, a mix of men, women and youth. There is supposed to be a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.There are supposed to be regional chairs who sit on the provincial board. There is supposed to be a party president and executive.

Many of those offices go unfilled.

To say the local and provincial boards and HQ staffing have been weak to non-existent would be an understatement.

The PC party structure needs to be re-activated from the grassroots up. If the party structure had been stronger, maybe the the last three leadership races would have been more robust and maybe the party structure could have avoided some of the bone-headed mistakes, especially those of the most recent election.

alking calmly down the street with Arie, my dog of choice, we were startled by a quick movement in the pile of dead leaves that lined the street. Darting out, at us, was a little brown squirrel. It saw the dog, mistook my leg as a safe tree, and hurtled toward me. I eeeked! I am not an eeeeeker, but the thought of a squirrel climbing leg to who knows where caused an involuntary outburst; enough of an outburst for the woodland creature to re-assess its own safety and scurry to a real tree. Much to my relief.

I was surprised by my reaction and spent some time ref lecting on what startles me, and under what condition. I don’t like mice. I can set a snap trap and release the victim when needed. I could pursue one around a confined space if necessary. I really don’t like snakes, I mean, I really don’t like snakes. I have maintained that I am not afraid of them, just don’t like being spooked by their sinuous movements, usually unannounced. I had to put that theory down the day Arie picked up the dried up carcass of a snake on one of our walks. The command ‘drop it’, had no effect, no matter the pitch or volume of the command. What to do? She was not putting it down, and I was not going to go home with it! After a desperate standoff on Railway Street, I remembered the doggie drop bag in my pocket. It was still unused - not that that would have been the determining factor in my decision! - I placed the bag over my hand and firmly tugged the scaly specimen out of her mouth, and won the prize to the distance for a toss of a snake skin! So, it wasn’t the movement that disturbed me, or even a live snake that upset me; it was the very idea of a snake that freaked me out.

It’s a very natural reaction to let out a squeal, or a squeak or a full blown yell when startled. It’s just not something I do very often. I’ll admit when I eeked for that squirrel, I did a quick shoulder check to see if there were any witnesses. You know that feeling, missed a step and almost fell; Did anyone see that? Or drop a piece of food in a public place and try to nonchalantly keep walking. There are all kinds of situations when we hope desperately that no one really saw what happened.

The incident did bring to mind the evening that we moved into the big house on the acreage east of town.

I had left the patio doors open as I carried load after endless into the house. On one of these trips I walked into a closed door. Ed explained, too quietly, that the light had attracted insects and a rather large one had got into the house. A rather large insect? It was a bloody big bat!! I eeked proper that time! If their f light is by sonar, I disturbed its f light pattern for a significant amount of time. Yep, there’s a time and a place for a good, loud, EEEK.

13.2.3 CULV ERT R EQUEST (DISCUSSION) Councillor Campbell reported that a citizen requested a culvert be installed (with approved provincial licensing) at the intersection of Elton Road and Humesville Road. Elton to apply for the licence and supply the culvert and the work to be the cost of the citizen and completed by Bluestar Construction. Council had no concerns with this

request.

13.2.4 C U LV E RT & DITCH CLE A N OUT REQUEST (DISCUSSION) Councillor Campbell reported that a citizen requested to replace a culvert and perform a ditch clean out (with approved provincial licensing) on Road 63N between Roads 107W and 108W Elton to apply for the licence and supply culvert and the work to be the cost of the citizen and completed by Bluestar Construction. Council had no concerns with this request.

Councillor Waldner returned to the Council Chambers.

13.3 WARD 3 - ROD PATERSON WARD 4 - Councillor Pankratz reported that gravelling is complete other than spot gravelling and Road 72N (Machinery Road) low level crossing road work was coordinated

by Minto-Odanah and will be a 50/50 cost share with Elton.

WARD 6 - Councillor Bromley reported beaver concerns in Ward 6 to be addressed.

Police and an auxiliary constable attended the breakfast program at the elementary school to assist staff and spend time with the youth.

Calls for Service.

Police received a report that a neighbor, chased a dog out of their yard with a stick. The owner was spoken to, they did not notice a small area of the fence that the dog could escape. Police would like to remind dog owners that there is a Municipal By-Law forbidding dogs to be at large.

Police received a report of an intrusion alarm at the Riverdale Municipal Office. Police attended and found everything was secure. The alarm was deemed to be false.

A report was received of a black Kia car came in and a lone male appeared to be looking around the club house and looking into the windows. The male saw the complainant and left. Police made extensive patrols for the vehicle with negative results. The license plate provided did not belong to any registered vehicles.

Police attended a motor vehicle collision at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Quebec Street in Rivers, one of the drivers was treated on scene by Riverdale – Daly Fire Department for minor injuries. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The scene was cleared with the assistance of the fire department.

The matter remains under investigation.

Police were called to report a dog had attacked a female and her dog. Police confirmed there were no injuries, the matter is still under investigation.

A female attended Rivers Police Service and advised police she was unable to vote as her identity had been used at a polling station in Winnipeg. Police contacted Elections Manitoba and are awaiting further correspondence.

Police received a report of civil matter in Bradwardine, involving the repair of a motorized vehicle. The caller was advised that the matter was civil at this time and not a police matter.

Police received a report of an assault at a residence in Rivers. When police attended the victim refused to provide police with any information. The victim was transported to another family member’s residence for the night.

Police received a report of a Mischief by driving on a resident’s lawn in Rural Riverdale. Police investigation revealed a building was being moved onto a property in the area, however no tire tracks were located on the complainant’s property.

Police were dispatched to a complaint of a person in a yellow sweater coming out of a ditch in the rural area. Police located the person on Highway 270. The person had become stranded in the area after taking

court date in the future.

Police were dispatched to a complaint of a youth having a mental health crisis who was destroying their room. The youth also threatened people in the residence before leaving on foot. Police were unable to locate the youth and received a call later advising the youth had returned home. Police spoke to all parties involved; family agreed to have the youth access mental health services on their own without police intervention.

A male accused of assault in September was located and arrested. The male was released with conditions to have no contact with the victim and provided a court date in the future.

Police were dispatched to a report of a youth threatening family members. Police learned the youth was holding a knife while making the threats. The youth was arrested for Uttering Threats and Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose. The youth was released into the care of Child and Family Services and given a court date in the future.

A complaint was received in Wheatland regarding a male having caused a disturbance the night prior to the report. Police did not receive a call while the offence was taking place. Police received a walk-in complaint of a stolen vehicle. The vehicle went missing from a residence in Rivers at approximately 8 am. The keys had been left in the vehicle. With the assistance of OnStar, the vehicle was located and recovered in Rural Riverdale. Police have no suspects currently and the matter remains under investigation.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, ‘Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention’ serves to remind people to stay alert and use caution when cooking to reduce the risk of kitchen fires.

The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner urges all Manitobans to check their kitchens for fire hazards and use safe

cooking practices.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, and unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fire deaths.

Some key cooking safety tips include: • watch what you heat – set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

• turn pot handles to the back of the stove.

• always keep a lid nearby when cooking and if a small grease fire starts, slide a lid over the pan and turn off the element.

• keep a three-foot childfree zone around the stove, oven and other appliances that could get hot.

Safety might not be the first thing people think of as the holiday season approaches. Faith, celebrations, decorations, and holiday dinners all come to mind when considering the holiday season. But that doesn’t mean safety should be left out of holiday planning.

Fire safety bears special consideration during the holiday season, when the prevalence of fire hazards like Christmas trees, holiday lighting displays and other decorative items increase the risk for home fires. Such tragedies can be averted with a few simple safety measures.

• Tend to your tree. Live Christmas trees are awe-inspiring, but they also pose a significant fire risk. The National Fire Protection Association urges celebrants to purchase only healthy trees with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Such trees are less likely to dry out, especially when well-watered throughout the season. Dry trees can catch fire more easily than healthy trees if embers from nearby fireplaces or candles drift in their direction.

• Recognize that location matters when decorating. The NFPA notes that Christmas trees should always be placed at least three feet away from any heat source, including fireplaces, space heaters, heat vents, candles, and even overhead lights.

If decorating with candles, never place them on the tree or on tables where other flammable decorations have already been placed. Chanukah menorahs should never be placed near curtains or other decorations.

• Turn off all lights and extinguish all lit decorative items when leaving the home or going to bed. Lit candles and menorahs should never be left unattended. The NFPA recommends turning tree lights and exterior decorative lights off when leaving the home or going to bed.

• Utilize a fire screen on fireplaces. Embers can catch on trees, decorations, or anything else that’s flammable if they escape the fireplace. Fire screens prevent that from happening by ensuring embers from burning logs stay in the fireplace. Like candles and menorahs, fires burning in a fireplace should never be left unattended. Make sure all embers have been extinguished before leaving the home or going to bed.

• Keep discarded trees away from your home. A 2014 analysis from the NFPA found that none of the ten days with the largest share of Christmas tree fires were before Christmas.

Dried out trees still pose a fire risk even after they’ve been removed from a home. When discarding a tree at the end of the holiday season, place it at the curb or keep it a safe distance away from your home and garage until you can.

Fire safety measures are an important component of the holiday season that can prevent this joyous time of year from turning tragic.

How to keep pets from causing home fires Pets can be excitable.

Though dogs anxious to get outdoors and play with their owners may be the first image of excited pets to come to mind, cats also can be compelled to move quickly when they hear sudden, loud noises or if they’re startled by visitors.

Excited pets can pose a safety hazard in homes where open flames are commonplace. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association estimates that around 1,000 home fires each year are started by pets. Pet owners can implement strategies recommended by the American Kennel Club and ADT Security Services to reduce the risk of fire in their homes. * Be especially careful around and mindful of open flames. Pets can easily tip over candles and gain access to fireplaces when open flames are burning. Extinguish such flames whenever leaving a room or ask someone to come in and look after pets so they are not left unattended around flames.

Even candles on fireplace mantels pose a hazard as curious cats can leap onto mantelpieces and tip over the candles. * Cover stove knobs. Stove knobs are another potential fire hazard in homes with curious pets. Knob covers prevent pets from accidentally turning on burners when no one is looking. Pet owners who let their pets roam free around the house while they’re at work or out running errands should cover stove knobs before leaving their homes. * Purchase flameless candles. Flameless candles are a great option for pet owners whose pets are energetic or especially curious. Flameless candles are battery-powered and provide ambient light without an open flame. * Consider crating pets or limiting access to certain areas if animals are not yet house-trained. Puppies and kittens are especially curious and eager to explore their new surroundings. That makes it easy for them to find trouble even in areas where pet owners think there isn’t any. Confine pets to crates during times of day when you plan to light candles or the fireplace or install gates to keep them out of rooms where they can access open flames. * Exercise caution when using a grill and/or firepit. Charcoal grills and firepits are not indoors, but they can still pose a fire hazard outside.

If necessary, keep pets indoors when grilling or sitting around the firepit. If you want them to be outdoors at these times, prevent them from accessing areas where the grill and firepit are located.

Pets tend to be curious, and that curiosity can be dangerous around open flames. Some simple tips can reduce the risk of home fires caused by pets.

Respiratory virus update

Manitoba Health advises that the first shipments of updated COVID-19 and seasonal flu vaccines are now being sent throughout the province, beginning with high-priority locations such as personal care homes and hospitals. It is expected these vaccines will begin to be more widely available to members of the public in the next few weeks, though some sites may have stock earlier than others.

People can begin accessing the updated flu and COVID-19 vaccines as soon as they are available. The online vaccine finder at www.gov.mb.ca/covid19/vaccine. html#finder will be updated with new locations and clinic details as they are submitted to the province. There are many ways people can access their vaccines, either by booking directly with a pharmacy or medical clinic, using the online booking tool at https://patient.petal-health. com/login?groupId=6032, calling 1-844-MAN-VACC (1-844-626-8222) or by looking for upcoming community vaccine clinics.

An advertising campaign encouraging Manitobans to stay on track with their vaccinations will launch provincewide next week. Manitoba Health has also created a central online resource at www.manitoba.ca/protectMB to help people find information about COVID-19, seasonal flu and pneumococcal vaccines, including how to book.

The updated Moderna vaccine is currently being distributed to vaccine sites. More COVID-19 vaccines will continue to arrive over the coming weeks to ensure sufficient supply for all Manitobans who want to be immunized.

Vaccination against both COVID-19 and seasonal flu is particularly important for people at higher risk of severe outcomes including: • adults 65 years of age or older; • residents of long-term care homes or other congregate living settings; • individuals with underlying medical conditions that place them at higher risk; • individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding; • individuals in or from First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities; • members of racialized and other equity-deserving communities; and • people who provide essential community services.

People who have questions about COVID-19 or seasonal flu immunizations should speak with their health-care provider or call Health Links-Info Santé at 1-888-3159257 (toll-free) or 204-788-8200.

Public health officials would like to remind Manitobans it is safe and effective to receive more than one vaccine at a time.

There are many ways Manitobans can to protect themselves, their families and the community during the upcoming respiratory virus season including: • choosing to be immunized against COVID-19 and the flu; • staying home when you’re sick, until you feel better and no longer have a fever; • choosing to wear a mask as an extra layer of protection; • washing your hands or using hand sanitizer regularly; • covering your coughs and sneezes; and • regularly cleaning and disinfecting shared surfaces and objects.

Rapid tests and PCR testing are only recommended for

people who are at high risk for serious outcomes as they need to know if they have COVID-19 to receive treatment options such as antivirals. Treatment must be started within days of symptoms appearing, so it is important to know if you are eligible and seek testing and as soon as possible. For more information about accessing treatment, speak with your health-care provider or call Health Links-Info Santé.

Rapid test kits continue to be available at no cost at many locations across the province. For more information about testing, including an online map of locations where rapid tests may be available, visit: www.gov.mb.ca/covid19/testing.html.

Supports and resources continue to be available for people with long COVID. If you continue to have COVID-19 symptoms, including fatigue, shortness of breath or brain fog, more than three months after being sick, visit https:// sharedhealthmb.ca/long-covid for more information or contact your health-care provider. It is important to note PCR or rapid tests results are not required for a person to be diagnosed with long COVID or to be referred for follow-up care.

any legal proceedings against them and any support pay ment s in arrears. MLAs owning a private corporation must provide detailed informat ion about it including a statement of its activities and sources of income, the names and addresses of any other people with an interest in it and all real property owned by it.

All disclosure is done on l i ne. M L A s mu s t complete the disclosure process within 90 days of assuming office. Once their disclosure statement has been accepted by the ethics commissioner (for merly ca lled t he

con f l ic t of i nt ere s t commissioner), it will be posted on a new website, www.ethicsmanitoba.ca.

Essay-writing tips for students

Submitted Metro Creative Students face several challenges during their academic careers. Those challenges are unique to each student, as some excel in certain subjects that their classmates find difficult, and vice versa. At some point in their academic careers, students will be asked to write an essay. University applications typically feature student essay portions, but essays are even incorporated into elementary school curricula.

Indeed, students of all ages are periodically asked to write essays, which underscores how useful some basic essay-writing tips can be. 1) Identify the assignment.

Essays run the gamut from personal essays to papers on historical figures to precis on texts. Before students

can write an effective, engrossing essay, they must first identify what’s being asked of them.

Does the instructor want students to argue a point?

Is the idea to examine a meaningful personal experience? Is the essay like a book report? Once t he ball get s rolling and writing begins, it’s easy to lose track of the assignment. But an effective essay must follow the guidelines set forth in the assignment. Once students gain a firm grasp of what the instructor is looking for, they can then identify what their point of view or argument will be. This can require some research and should conclude with a thesis statement that will determine the rest of the essay. 3) Write an outline. Outlines can help frame the essay and keep writers on track. An outline also serves as a time for writers to determine what to keep and what to omit from an essay. Longer essays typically require ample research, and it’s unlikely that all that research will make it into the final essay. Writing an outline provides a chance to narrow the scope of the essay and cut it down, which should prove useful when sitting down to begin writing the composition. 4) Engage readers early.

An engaging question or assertion at the beginning of an essay will entice readers to want to continue reading.

The question should be one writers can answer while an assertion should be supported throughout the rest of the essay. But some engaging prose in the opening paragraphs can draw readers in and set the stage for a well-written essay. 5) Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence. Topic sentences are like outlines because they establish the structure of a paragraph.

Each new paragraph should include its own topic sentence. If a new topic needs to be addressed, then do so in a new paragraph. Paragraphs should flow into each other, but writers should avoid introducing more than one topic in a single paragraph. 6) Write a strong conclusion. The thesis statement will help to define the introductory paragraph, and it also can be utilized to establish the conclusion. Revisit the thesis in the conclusion and show how the points made throughout the body of the essay support that thesis. Conclude the essay with a statement t h at h i gh l i ght s t he significance of the point the essay attempted to make. Students of all ages write essays. Some basic writing tips can help students master those assignments.

Golf Course gets a new bathroom / canteen

Didn’t it seem like the clubhouse might be a little too far for a bathroom break on the R iverdale Golf Course hole #5. Well problem is solved. On the October long weekend, a group of men who love t he game of golf, took time out of their business turkey cooking schedule to go down to the course and start construction on the new bathroom / canteen being built on hole #5.

The team was all made up of volunteers. The materials were delivered on Saturday, Oct. 7, bright and early by the Rivers Home Hardware. There was a generator on site and the volunteers brought their own tools. Can’t wait to see the finished building!

Elton boy’s varsity volleyball On Friday, August 6 the boys traveled to Russell to participate in the Beef and Barley tournament. They started the day off slow with the a two set loss to Goose Lake High School out of Roblin. They then had a two set victory over Hamiota and Rossburn.

That set them up for a rematch against Goose Lake. They won the first set 25 -20.

Lost the second set 21-25. And then had a very disappointing third set loss.

The team will be practising Tuesday and Thursday to try to improve in some areas so they can try to win their first tournament of the year at home Oct 13 and 14 at Forrest Elementary School Gymnasium.

Elton Sabres SV Volleyball Girls The Rivers Rams SV Girls volleyball team played at the Viking Classic on Oct. 6 and 7. They were in Pool 1 and lost their first two games in the Round Robin.

They headed into the quarter finals in fourth place. They defeated the River East Kodiaks to be able to compete in the semi-finals. They lost in the semi-finals against the Daniel McIntyre Maroons, but they put up a good fight with a very tight score, 2516, 25-20 for the Maroons.
