Approximately 160 students from grades 1 through 6 participated in the walk/run which began with a lap around the field north of the school and continued south down Main Street, west on 2nd Avenue, past the high school on Dominion St., then east on 5th, where they turned past the hospital, then onto 6th Ave. where

they made their way back to the school grounds.

The walk/run took students approximately 45 minutes to complete. This year’s school run was led by sisters Emma, Jalyn and Kiera Johnston who carried the Terry Fox f lag and were all running for their Uncle Bryce who has been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma since January.

Prior to the run date, students collected donations for the Terry Fox Foundation that will go towards cancer research. continued on page 2

If their goal was met, students would have the chance to throw a pie in the face of staff members. Students at RES surpassed their goal and raised the amazing

amount of $4308 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Ms. Jermey, Mr. Kinney, Miss Rapsky, Mr. Martin, Mr. Lamb, and Mr. Wieler all happily volunteered, and each received a whipped cream pie in the face thrown by a student whose name was randomly drawn. Students were beyond excited and the gym was loud with cheering. Congratulations to students on a job well done!

Talented and passionate about singing? The Western Manitoba Youth Choir has been busy preparing for their 42nd season. Under the direction of Blair Chapman (Neepawa) and Roberta Velarde (Winnipeg) accompanied by Danielle Guina (Brandon), 53 talented choristers gathered at scenic Camp Wannakumbac for two weekends of rehearsals. On the 14th of October, the choir will be boarding a bus and starting their tour of communities in the Westman area!

FAITHFULLY YOURS Neil Strohschein Counting our blessings, Part I

I

n my 72 years on this planet, I have lived in seven different communities in three different Canadian provinces. My travels have taken me to two more provinces and six of the United States. But while traveling can be a lot of fun, it’s always nice to return home.

For the past 27 years, home has been the Town of Neepawa. I moved here in 1996. I fell in love with the community and its people; and I’ve never felt the urge to leave. This is where I live. This is where I work. This is where I will spend my declining years. This is probably where I will die and where what is left of me after I die will be buried.

So, why do I love this community so much? What drew me here and what keeps me here? The most obvious reason, for me at least, is the sheer beauty of the world right around my home. If I get tired of the scenery in one place, I can jump in my car, drive one hour in any direction and feel as though I have emerged in a different world.

If I want to relax beside a quiet stream I can do thatsuch streams are plentiful in this area. I can dip my toes in cold lake water if I desire. At this time of year, a country drive will treat me to an awesome display of fall colorssomething no artist anywhere on earth can ever hope to duplicate. This part of Canada has an abundance of

nature trails for hiking in the summer and cross-country skiing in winter. And we are less than an hour away from a national park that showcases one of the most unique eco-systems in the world.

But for this “farm boy,” nothing beats regular drives along Highway 5, 10 or 16; just to see how each year’s crops are growing or watch different pieces of farm equipment at work in the fields. Given the wide variety of crops grown in this area, I am sure to see pieces of equipment I never saw while growing up in Alberta on my family’s mixed farm.

In my lifetime, we have seen many advances in our knowledge and understanding of the world God has entrusted to our care. Modern science enables us to test the soil, determine its nutritional needs and blend fertilizers that will supply nutrients that are lacking. Modern technology enables applicators to vary the amount of fertilizer applied to different parts of a specific field; thus ensuring that no overfertilization takes place. These advances, along with numerous others, enable us to produce enough food to feed ourselves and hundreds of others; while doing all we can to care for that part of God’s world entrusted to us.

Have we grown in our appreciation for, respect for and care of this part of our world? I would argue that we have.

Have we learned all we can learn about our world and how to care for it? No. Will we learn more in the future?

Yes, we will. Will we use that knowledge to become better stewards of what we have? I hope and pray that we will.

We have been richly blessed with the beauty of nature and the fertility of the soil around us. These blessings are not to be taken for granted. I hope we will take time this weekend to thank God for what he has given us, and resolve to be better stewards of these gifts. Happy Thanksgiving!

W Disappointment abounds

W

hen the Oct. 3 Manitoba election dust settled there were some happy people but there were a lot of disappointed ones as well. Likely more disappointed people than happy ones.

The good news is there is a way to turn that disappointment around and it covers every voter and every party. The bad news, it requires more work than most people are willing to perform.

All Manitoba parties elect leaders, nominees, boards and delegates.

The NDP holds leadership conventions and delegates are elected. well, at least two-thirds are elected. About one third of the delegates are appointed to spots designated for union reps. I have attended an NDP convention as a reporter and it is quite the process to observe. Independent candidates can vote however they wish but the union delegates tend to be clumped into voting blocks as per the wishes of the union leadership. While the New Democratic Party obviously claims to be “democratic”, the assigned union delegate system erodes that premise considerably.

Aside from that one difference, most political parties have local electoral district boards. They all maintain a membership list and when the time comes for electing delegates to annual meetings, or policy meetings or leadership conventions, the local board tries to get a slate of delegates to attend to represent the views of the local electoral district or constituency.

The titles local electoral district, constituency or riding are pretty much interchangeable. In the Banner coverage area the local electoral districts are Agassiz, Riding Mountain and Spruce Woods.

most closely espouses their views. If a person is willing to be a member, they will likely get an opportunity, if they wish to become a board member and a delegate to a provincial convention.

There’s lots of opportunity, as many board and delegate positions are left unfilled. It has long been that way.

It is at the board level that policies can be brought forward and then moved on to the provincial meetings.

That’s how it’s done and those who are skilled and willing get to bring their policies to the forefront.

The bottom line is if you aren’t happy with the Oct. 3 results, you can change things for next time.

The mistake that many people make is to join a party that will never form government. New parties have a hard go. There has not been many new parties form government. In the 1940s, in Manitoba the conservatives and the few progressives that were left standing became the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba. The New Democratic Party was formed nationally in 1961 by the amalgamation of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC). The NDP

name came to prominence in some provinces after that.

In Manitoba, there are many people labouring away in the Keystone, the Green and the Liberal parties and largely to no avail. The common theme is that a lot of caring, intelligent people have mostly wasted their time at politics when they could have applied their talents within a party that had a chance to form government.

The same premise holds for Manitoba’s two main parties. Neither party has properly developed their structure to best employ the talents of Manitobans.

When membership lists dwindle and when board positions are left unfilled and when provincial conventions aren’t filled up, Manitobans sell themselves short.

So if you were disappointed with the results of Tuesday’s vote, the above steps need to be taken to make Manitoba’s political scene more vibrant and effective.

e all know that some days it is a whole lot easier to give thanks. There are some days all the positive thinking one can drum up isn’t quite enough. That doesn’t mean I/we should give up, or not even try! Most days it is super easy for me to be grateful.

I took a day trip last week. Travelling down to Carman I choose Highway One. It was horrendously busy. I could not enjoy the fall colours, or observe the progress of the prairie harvest. I am familiar with road construction, and have adapted to the round about at Portage. The traffic was dense and intense. Coming home I chose the roads less travelled, heading west of Carman, stopping at the Graysville Mennonite Church cemetery and paying my respect to family and friends; parents, nephew, neighbours and class mates. It was a beautiful fall day and spending time there was easy. I continued through the Pembina Hills, out to Notre Dame and over to Holland. I continued past Austin and north to Gladstone. I enjoyed every minute of this slightly longer drive, admiring the rolling acres, the ravines and valleys, taking in the beauty of the fall colours and open to each vista. It was worth every extra minute on the road.

The time in Carman was equally enjoyable. I had high tea with a niece, catching up on the past few years, sharing joys and sorrows. The time spent with her flew by and the next scheduled family event was a lunch with the last of Ed’s brothers and sisters. The last of the Friesens is 92, in good health, lives alone, and a few years ago bought himself a red Mustang convertible, that he drives on sunny days. This time together also sped by, once again getting caught up with family events, sharing memories, honest feelings, and emotions. It is a wonder that we can continue to learn and grow, long past the age of wanting to learn and grow! The last family member I spent time with was my youngest sister. We went for a walk to the nearby park, sat long on a picnic bench, and here, too, caught up with family events, and shared open and honest feelings, emotions and memories. Before heading back we shared coffee and cookies. Chocolate chip cookies baked by her daughter, my niece. Perhaps it was the walk and the fresh air that influenced my decision but they were the best cookies ever! And I have met a great many chocolate chip cookies!

It was an ordinary day. It was an extraordinary ordinary day. At every turn I had opportunity to be thankful.

Thankful for the love extended and received, for the care and support expressed and enacted, for the love and laughter shared. The thankfulness for the ordinary continued with my arrival home. My granddaughter had let Arie, my lovely and loving young dog, out twice during the day, so there were no messes or puddles, just vigorous rejoicing at my return. A long, slow, rejuvenating walk completed a day; a day filled with introspection, appreciation, conversations with intent and content, and thankfulness.

• A curfew and conditions check on a prolific offender found that they were absent from their residence in contravention of their courtimposed conditions. Charges are pending.

• Assistance was provided to the RCMP who were in search of an armed person in a mental health crisis. Though they were believed to be in the Riverdale area, they were not located in our community.

• Police worked with Manitoba Conservation in a joint forces’ operation enforcing safe and lawful hunting practices.

• Police worked in conjunction with the RCMP to address a concern of domestic conflict. One of the parties was taken to Brandon Hospital for a mental health assessment.

• Police are investigating theft of construction materials from a trailer that was parked on Main Street.

• Police were called to attend the Teen Challenge facility to assist with a client that was not complying with the rule of the treatment program. They were removed from the facility and taken to a safe location in Brandon.

• A complaint was received of a stray dog which was running at large was in contravention of the bylaw. The matter was resolved without charges.

• Police attended to a domestic conflict. The matter as investigated, and no offences had occurred. The situation was de-escalated, and cooler heads prevailed.

• Police were called to investigate a broken window at the Credit Union . Entry was not made but the window required replacement. A likely suspect has been established and investigation continues.

• Police attended the junction of Highway 25 and 2nd Avenue to assist the Ambulance who had located an intoxicated male who had sustained injuries consistent with an assault. The male was taken to hospital and treated. The man declined police assistance and the matter will not be pursued further.

• Police assisted a man in locating a family member who had left Rivers and was in Brandon.

• Police received a complaint wherein a vehicle owner had sold a vehicle many years ago but did not remove the license plate. The license plate was found to be on a vehicle that was recently charged with a Highway Traffic Act offence. The matter was resolved but

police would like to remind everyone selling a vehicle to remove their license plates and, if they are not being transferred to another vehicle, return them to MPI. • At the request of family Police conducted a well-being check in a Rivers resident. All was well.

• A motorist was served a ticket for travelling well above the speed limit in a 100 km/h zone.

• Police are investigating a matter of assault and utter threats stemming from an incident between 2 adult males. Police are investigating and charges are pending.

• A motorist was served a ticket for travelling more than 130 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

• Police were called to a local business regarding a purchase wherein the customers payment did not process. The matter was found to not be criminal in nature and police involvement was no longer required.

• Police facilitated a planning meeting for the re-formation of the Rivers Youth Hub. Some of the initial stakeholders met and discussed strategy to address the needs of youth in the community. The Rivers Youth Hub will work to identify and deal with trending issues in the community and identify and address the needs of specific young people by getting the applicable agencies involved to address their issues and concerns.

Mandatory alcohol screening explained Lon Schwartz (Chief of Police) Rivers Police Service If you have been reading the Rivers Banner over the past several months, you have likely noticed that every week the police are dealing with one or more people who have been caught driving while under the influence of alcohol. Impaired driving has been a problem on Canadian roads for decades and despite awareness and enforcement campaigns to curb this behavior, it continues. In recent years there have been changes made to the laws so that police are not required to establish reasonable/ probable grounds to demand a breath sample, they can now obtain one under the provisions of Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS).

What is Mandatory Alcohol Screening?

MAS authorizes law enforcement officers to demand that a driver provide a roadside breath sample on an approved screening device, whether or not they suspect that the driver has recently consumed alcohol. This would only be done after the person has been lawfully stopped, under common or provincial law. For instance, under provincial highway traffic acts, law enforcement can stop drivers at random to check license validity, vehicle fitness and sobriety.

Why is mandatory alcohol screening needed?

Research indicates that up to 50% of drivers with a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit may not be detected at roadside check stops. MAS is a proven traffic safety measure that deters and better detects alcohol-impaired drivers.

In addition, in jurisdictions where mandatory alcohol screening was enacted, rates of impaired driving and subsequently fatal road accidents were significantly reduced.

For example, authorities in Ireland credit MAS with reducing the number of people killed on Irish roads by almost a quarter (23%) in the first year

following its enactment in 2006 and almost 40% over the first four years.

As outlined in the Bill’s accompanying Charter Statement, the legislation is consistent with the Constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Are field sobriety tests mandatory in Canada?

You do not have a legal right to refuse one or more of these tests. If you do refuse to take a field sobriety test, the police officer can charge you with failing to comply with an officer’s demand. Essential gear for first-time Perfect Thanksgiving hosts Pumpkin Pie

Hosting Thanksgiving is a large undertaking that can put some hosts under pressure. Unlike some other holidays that are less food-focused, Thanksgiving is largely about the meal. Leaving hungry is never an option on Thanksgiving.

Individuals who are new to Thanksgiving hosting may be at a loss as to where to start with their preparation. There are certain must-haves hosts should familiarize themselves with. Many of these essentials revolve around tools for cooking in the kitchen and serving guests.

1) Large roasting pan: You’ll need somewhere to oven-roast the turkey. If you plan to host Thanksgiving year after year, investing in a quality roasting pan will help deliver even cooking temperatures to the food.

2) Wire rack: The turkey is placed upon a rack inside of the roasting pan so that it will not swim in the juices and cause a soggy bottom during cooking.

3) Food thermometer: Ensuring the turkey and other foods are cooked to the correct internal temperature is essential. Turkey is done when the temperature reads 170 F in the breast and 180 F in the thigh. If stuffed, the stuffing should register 165 F, according to Butterball.

4) Coordinated casserole dishes: Casserole dishes can hold all of the sides served with the turkey, including stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, green beans, and more.

5) Service for eight or more: Thanksgiving draws a crowd, so take inventory of silverware, dishes, wine glasses, and any other table needs to ensure that you can accommodate all of the guests.

6) Turkey serving platter: When the turkey is ready, it can be placed on an attractive serving platter for your photos, after which you slice and then return the sliced poultry to the serving platter for dining.

6) Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F and continue baking until a knife inserted 1 inch from the crust comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes.

October 6 marks the beginning of Operation Impact 2023, a national public awareness campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world. By promoting safe driving behaviours, we hope to help prevent collisions, save lives, and reduce injuries on our roads.

From October 6 to 9, 2023, police across the country will be focused

on behaviours that put drivers, passengers, and other road users at risk: impaired driving due to alcohol, drugs, or fatigue, as well as aggressive driving, distracted dr iv ing, a nd dr iv ing without a seat belt.

This year’s campaign theme emphasizes the accountability and the role each driver must play to support traffic safety on the streets and highways in their community.

“Leave sooner, drive slower, live longer,” said

Chief Lon Schwartz.

Motor vehicle collisions kill about 2,000 C a nad ia ns, ser iously injure another 10,000 people, and injure about 165,000 citizens in this country each year.

It is not a coincidence that the timing of this campaign to achieve safer streets and highways takes place during this long weekend. More people are travelling, and collisions are therefore more frequent.

Mashed Potatoes with Fried Mushroom, Bacon, and Onion

A new twist on an old classic! Taking mushrooms, onions, and bacon, and incorporating them into good old fashion mashed potatoes.

Prep time: 20 mins Cook time: 30 mins Ingredients: 6 Potatoes, peeled and quartered 5 slices bacon 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 6 medium mushrooms, sliced 1 medium onion, sliced 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons ranch dressing Directions: 1) Add potatoes to a large pot of water and bring to a boil. Cook until the potatoes are soft, about 20 minutes.

2) Meanwhile, place the bacon slices in a large skillet over medium heat, and cook until crisp. Remove to paper towels.

3) Wipe out the skillet, return to stove, and pour in vegetable oil. Stir in mushrooms and onion and cook until onion is soft and translucent.

4) When the potatoes are done, drain water, and place potatoes in a large bowl. Mash in butter and ranch dressing. With a potato masher or electric mixer, continue to mash until the potatoes are smooth. Stir in the mushrooms, onions, and crumbled bacon.

Slow Cooker Stuffing

This crockpot stuffing is an easy way to make extra stuffing for a large crowd and it frees up stove space because it cooks in a slow cooker. This recipe is designed for use in a standard 4-quart slow cooker and is very tasty and moist.

Prep Time: 25 mins Ingredients: 1 cup butter 2 cups chopped celery 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1-1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 4-1/2 cups chicken broth, or as needed

Cook Time: 4hrs 50 mins 2 cups chopped onion 12 ounces sliced mushrooms 12 cups dry bread cubes 1-1/2 teaspoons dried sage 1 teaspoon dried thyme 2 large eggs, beaten

Directions: 1) Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir onion, celery, mushroom, and parsley in butter until slightly softened, 5 to 8 minutes.

2) Place bread cubes in a very large mixing bowl. Spoon cooked vegetables over bread cubes. Season with salt, sage, poultry seasoning, thyme, marjoram, and pepper. Pour in enough broth to moisten, then mix in eggs. Transfer mixture to a slow cooker.

3) Cover and cook on High for 45 minutes, then reduce heat to Low and cook for 4 to 8 hours.

Pumpkin and squash fall harvest Fresh Cranberry Sauce

For many of us, thanksgiving involves getting together with folks that you enjoy and eating a lot of food! In Canada it is timely as we have usually just finished or in the process of finishing the harvest of our gardens.

If we look at the roots of Thanksgiving, there are two different paths. In 1578, Sir Martin Frobisher and his crew had their first Thanksgiving meal on what would become Canadian soil. They had voyaged to Baffin Island and held a ceremony to thank God for their safe arrival. They enjoyed a lovely meal of salt beef served with rockhard crackers and mushy peas.

In Canada, we do have much reason to give thanks for as we do enjoy a land blessed with many natural wonders, clean air and fertile soil. Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday in 1879 and we have enjoyed an extra day to share that 142 million kilograms SUBMITTED PHOTO of turkey that is consumed. One last interesting trivia surrounding the venerable turkey is that fossils indicate that wild turkeys have roamed North America for more than 10 million years.

Now getting down to what we grow and harvest from the garden. Mashed potatoes served with large amounts of gravy are often an important part of the meal. Choosing potatoes with a higher starch content like russets or Yukon gold will give you the fluffiest, smoothest and most flavourful mash. Be careful to treat those swollen starch granules in your potatoes gently as well as too much vigour will give you a gluey, less appetizing addition to your meal.

Winter squash are always a favourite and colourful vegetable and can be served in many ways.

Simply wash the outer rind and chop the squash into appropriate sizes for baking. Add butter, salt and pepper to taste and cover to ensure the moisture stays in this yummy vegetable. Bake at 350°F. Thanksgiving would not be complete without pumpkin pie. Making a pumpkin pie from a real pumpkin will forever spoil you for making it by opening a can. A pumpkin that is 6 to 8 inches in diameter will give you enough pumpkin for a 10-inch deep dish pie. Cut the pumpkin in half, scoop out the seeds and then either bake, steam or microwave the pumpkin until it is soft. Discard excess moisture and puree the pumpkin until smooth. Now it is time to mix the pie ingredients together.

These ingredients will usually include some type of sweetener, some spices like cloves, ginger, cinnamon and maybe allspice, eggs, and evaporated milk. Bake the pie until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean and enjoy with whipped cream.

The only thing left is to harvest some materials from your garden to make an appropriate table centre for Thanksgiving.

Fresh cranberry sauce is a must for your Thanksgiving dinner. Made with just 3 ingredients, this easy cranberry sauce is perfect alongside turkey but it can also be used as filling for cranberry and cream cheese tarts or a tasty topping on bagels, cornbread, or cheesecake.

Cook time: 20 mins Ingredients: 1 cup water 1 cup white sugar 1 (12 ounce) package fresh cranberries

(you can use frozen too) Directions: 1) Gather all ingredients.

2) Bring water to a boil in a saucepan; add sugar and cook until sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes.

3) Stir cranberries into the saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, and simmer until cranberries have popped and sauce is chunky, about 10 minutes or longer for desired consistency. The longer you cook it, the less chunky it will be.

4) Pour sauce into a serving dish or jars and cover until ready to use; the pectin in the cranberries will make the cranberry sauce gel as it cools.

5) Mix cranberry sauce with a fork before serving on your thanksgiving turkey.

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends and reflect on one’s blessings. In 2023, Canadian Thanksgiving takes place on Oct. 9, while Americans celebrate on Nov. 23. Here are some interesting facts about the Thanksgiving celebration.

1. American Thanksgiving is largely modeled on a 17th century harvest feast shared by the English settlers and the Wampanoag tribe.

2. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October. It is based on European harvest festivals.

3. The National Turkey Federation says around 45 million turkeys will be eaten on Thanksgiving, which equates to about 720 million pounds of turkey being consumed (with the average turkey size being 16 pounds).

4. The Butterball hotline answers roughly 100,000 calls every year on its turkey question hotline.

5. In 1953, the Swanson company overestimated the number of frozen turkeys it would sell for the holiday season by 26 tons. Rather than waste the meat, Swanson sliced it up, repackaged it and created the first frozen TV dinners.

6. Thanksgiving in America may be older than many recognize. While Thanksgiving is largely tied to the 17th century settlers, the National Parks Service says in 1565 Spanish settlers in St. Augustine (now Florida) celebrated by having a meal to which they invited

the native Seloy tribe. The Spanish served pork stew, sea biscuits, red wine, and garbanzo beans. Some say the Seloy contributed turkey, venison and maize.

7. Thanksgiving didn’t become a civic holiday until Abraham Lincoln made it one after the Civil War tragedy. Declared a national holiday on October 20, 1864.

8. The Pilgrims did not refer to themselves as Pilgrims’. They used the word Separatists.

9. Grenada, Liberia, the Philippines, Saint Lucia, and the Netherlands celebrate their own versions of Thanksgiving.

10. Each year, the American president Pardons’ a turkey from slaughter on Thanksgiving.

This tradition dates back to when Abraham Lincoln’s son was upset that his family’s turkey that was going to be killed for Thanksgiving dinner.

11. According to the U.S. Calorie Control Council (CCC), an average American may consume 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day. 12. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual tradition. People line the parade route in New York City or tune in to watch the parade on television. It originated in 1924 and the famed balloons were added in 1927.

13. Apple pie is the pie of choice for Thanksgiving, even though pumpkin pie is prevalent this time of year.

Dig-nite your pass-ion for volleyball

Elton Sabres Boys Varsity Volleyball On Thursday, Sept. 28 the Elton boys’ varsity volleyball team travelled to Roblin. The first game was against Gilbert Plains. The boys won 25-12 and 25-13. The second game was against Goose Lake and the boys won in straight sets again. 25-11 and 25-22. The third game of the evening was against Morris. The boys won 25-11 and 25-20. The final game of the night was against landmark who are the defending provincial champions. They won the first set 25-23 but lost the second 21-25.

They finished second in their pool and found themselves playing MCBI from The Pas in their first playoff game.

They won 25-16 and 25-17. In the semi-finals they played Major Pratt. The boys won the first set 25-23, however Major Pratt battled back and won the last two sets in a very disappointing defeat.

On Tuesday, Oct. 3 Elton hosted a mini tournament with teams from their zone. The boys played well against

Gladstone and won 25-16 and 25-19. Rowen Welch, the teams Libero, made some incredible defensive plays.

Their final game of the night was against Neepawa.

They won the first set 25 points to 20. In the second set the boys were losing 15 to five and the coach had used both timeouts. However, the team was able to gain momentum from the service line with Cade Antholz leading the way and they had a great comeback win as Jack Hutton came up with a timely kill to win the set 26-24!

Friday, they travelled to Major Pratt in Russell looking for their first tourney win of the year.

Rivers Rams SV Volleyball Girls The Rivers Rams SV Girls volleyball team had a great start at the Prairie Mountain Invitational on Sept 29, and 30. They won five out eight games in the round robin and placed second in their pool.

They headed into the quarter finals ready to win. They defeated the Teulon Saints to be able to compete in the semi-finals. They lost in the semi-finals against the Prairie Mountain Predators, but they put up a good fight with a very tight score, 20-25, 25-19, 15-13 for the Predators.

Growing awareness and fostering support for Provincial programs is essential for Manitoba 4-H Council Inc. to maintain and expand the programming for all its’ members. To support both of those objectives, Manitoba 4-H Council will be hosting their First Annual Fundraising Dinner at the Dome Building on the Keystone Centre grounds in Brandon on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 in conjunction with the National 4-H initiative “Show Your 4-H Colours” day.

To pay tribute to Canada’s champions of the truth, News Media Canada has created its first-ever illustrated book entitled “Champions.” This book features the stories of notable Canadians from the news media industry who play an integral role in keeping newspapers alive - the most credible source of information that remains written by humans, for humans.
