By Bruce Klassen Chief

On Saturday, Sept. 30 Rivers Police Service received information of a possible marijuana grow operation. Through cooperation with Brandon Police Service and Rivers Police, a

search warrant was executed on Tuesday, Oct. 3 in the 700 block of Fifth Avenue in Rivers. A substantial number of plants and a quantity of marijuana were

seized, along with equipment used in growing marijuana. Value of the seizure is believed to be worth in excess of $60,000. A male in his 40s has been

charged with cultivation and production of marijuana, contrary to section 7(1) Controlled Substances and Distribution Act and possession for the purpose

of trafficking marijuana, contrary to section 5(1) Controlled Substances and Distribution Act. The male is expected to appear in court sometime in early December.

anada Post’s local area supervisor was in Rivers on Tuesday, Oct. 3 to inform employees of the month-long promotion of Canada Post’s Children’s Foundation. Paul Greer brought a jar filled with jelly beans and related promotional material for the raffle, explaining the process to postmaster Terry Nolin. When he said there was another reason for his visit and he opened a box containing a silver watch, Terry was definitely surprised. “I had no idea it had been that long, I guess I didn’t think of it,” she laughs. “I must say, when I started, I didn’t expect to be a postmaster, but you never know what’s going to happen. When I started, it was one day a week; who knew?” Of her 25 years of service to the corporation, more than half that time has been spent in Rivers. She began parttime in Redvers, Sask. in 1992, where she remained until accepting a full-time position in Glenavon, Sask. in 2000. She moved here in September 2004, following a “promotion to Rivers” in which she succeeded retiring postmaster Ken Wells. Besides the Rideau-brand silver watch which bears the logo and “25 years” on the face, Terry is “eligible to join The Heritage Club, which offers group discounts on trips and other benefits,” says Paul. “There’s a brochure here, she can read all about it and decide whether or not to join.” Terry laughed at that suggestion, claiming it made her sound too old. Congratulations on the honour Terry, and thank-you for your excellent customer service to Rivers Banner and our readership. To mark her years of service with Canada Post, Paul Greer presents Terry Nolin a silver watch. Photo by Sheila Runions
