A room full of big ideas By Vern May Minnedosa & District Community Development Corporation A lively group convened Thursday, Oct. 22 in Minnedosa for an entrepreneurship event intended to inspire interest in new rural enterprise. What’s the Big Idea? was jointly presented by Minnedosa and Neepawa but drew interest from a wide radius including pitches from Oakburn, Rapid City and Riding Mountain, in addition to the host locales. The day opened with a modified trade show component, encouraging a dialogue between emerging merchants and industry partners. Government and private service agencies were on

hand to engage in conversation with the entrepreneurs to share information on their services and propose avenues for support. Patrons were also treated to presentations of local success stories from recently established entrepreneurs Nikita Shaurette (Shuttle Bug Group Charters & Tours, Onanole) and Paul Laliberte (Liberty Physiotherapy, Minnedosa). The showcase of the event was the “Pitch Parlour,” a Dragon’s Den-style pitch competition which pitted the area’s big ideas against each other for a slate of cash awards and incentives. In

all, $3,700 was awarded in seven award categories. Two Rapid City pitches came away with awards. Lisa Ballegeer, who operates Innovative Hearing Technologies, proposed to expand her business with the development of a mobile hearing aid testing trailer to increase the convenience to clients across the region. She was granted a $500 award. Doug and Hali Finlay of Oakview Equipment pitched a proposal to open an MTZ tractor dealership near Rapid City and were also awarded $500 to support their endeavour. The day’s big winner was

Marlies Soltys, who proposed the development of a local art gallery and multi-use arts and culture space in Minnedosa. Soltys, currently employed at Minnedosa Collegiate, has developed a home-based business, Minnedosa Mosaics, a developer of tile work for original art as well as home renovation projects. Soltys took home three awards, including the best pitch of the day. Other proposals which received the nod came from Darryn Cameron of Neepawa who is hoping to launch a retail business for his furniture refinishing and home

décor operations, and Joyce Dumaske of Riding Mountain won an award for the best idea for a proposed business to assist new international residents get oriented in the community and assist in the cultural transition to create a successful start in their new home. Attendees including current business owners, municipal councils/officials, service club members as well as a number of business development professionals and financiers. Feedback from the event was encouraging enough that plans to make this an annual event are currently being discussed.
