Co-op celebrates silver anniversary

o-operatives celebrate their unique business model by hosting Coop Week in mid-October of each year. The village of Oak River, with a population of 125, boasts two co-operatives: Vanguard Credit Union and Kenton/Oak River Co-op. These businesses worked together to provide a free luncheon to their customers on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Barbecued pork on a bun, pickles and cheese were served to nearly 100 people who attended the party at OakDale Senior Home.

Dessert was a decorated cake, made to recognize the 25th year of operation of Oak River Coop.

When Ron’s Lucky Dollar store closed, “concerned community members approached the board of directors of Kenton Co-op about the possibility of opening a branch store in Oak River,” states History of Blanshard, Volume IV. “Several meetings were held with the board and Oak River community. The final decision was made to undertake this project and on Sept. 21, 1990, our store was officially open for business at 29 North Railway Street.”

The building was previously home to a variety store and before that, a restaurant. It’s use for the last quarter-century has been selling groceries, including produce, once-weekly delivery from Country Crocus Bakery in Hamiota and twice-weekly farm supplies from Kenton Co-op, if they have been ordered in ad-

vance. The store regularly stocks baler twine and salt blocks, but other hardware comes from the parent store when general manager Ed Alexander makes his visits to Oak River.

Ed officially welcomed everyone to the lunch and acknowledged the community’s support throughout the years. He presented Shelley Ramsey a

bouquet of flowers and a gift certificate in recognition of her 25 years of service with the company, the last 19 as manager. Wendy Peters received a verbal bouquet for her 19 years of employment there.

Oak River’s first manager was Roxanne Turnbull, who served in that capacity for six years before working alongside her

husband as administrator of Mr. T’s Services.

Oak River Co-op has 28by 58 feet of display space as well as a receiving/storage area and office. It is open Monday and Wednesday 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Oak River’s first board representative, Dick Heapy, was asked to cut the cake. He was joined by current board rep Diane Kuculym, past rep Pat Greenaway, Kenton rep Bob Good and board president Robert Alexander. Ninety-six people signed the guest book.

Help us scare hunger!

By Sharlette Paddock Secretary At the Oct. 14 meeting of Riverdale Harvest we learned the food bank handed out 12 family hampers, which included 27 children under 18, one couple hamper and seven single hampers in September. We have seen our regular food donations from the church and business hampers significantly supplemented by a couple of donations. One came through the annual home and craft sale in Rivers on Sept. 19. Deerboine Colony graciously donated large amounts of beets, carrots and gourds —we are happy to report all found good homes! We also received more than 300 pounds of potatoes, onions, carrots, parsnips and cabbage from the fundraiser sale From Farm to School that high school students did this month. Last year people graciously purchased bags intending for them to come to us and they ended up at Winnipeg Harvest; we definitely received the produce this year!

Looking forward to the next couple of months, Rivers Collegiate students will once again support us. We Scare Hunger food drive will be coming to your door on Halloween asking for a donation that will go to our local food bank. Any non-perishable food item would be gladly accepted. We currently are low on macaroni and cheese, soups, peanut butter and canned veggies. However, other items are always needed, such as canned fruit, canned meat, canned beans, cereal and crackers. We will appreciate your generosity as these kids come to your doors! That is our “challenge” for

this month.

For November our challenge is to give things towards Christmas baking. You could include a family favourite recipe and one or more items that are called for by your recipe. Items could be anything non-perishable: flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, chocolate chips, etc. or you could donate a pre-packaged Christmas treat. Unfortunately we are unable to give away homemade treats, but we will gladly accept other items including our regular necessities. A Christmas bazaar being planned for Nov. 21 will have a collection basket for food donations for Riverdale Harvest as well.

If you or someone you know is in need of a food hamper, please call Sharlette at 204-328-7341 and make an appointment to pick up a hamper. Normally, we have appointments on Mondays and Thursdays.

65 years ago, Oct. 26, 1950 Friday’s election saw G. L Davies elected as Daly’s reeve; he had 241 votes while E. C. Smith had 147. Both men live on the same section in Ward 1, which also had an election for councillor; W. E. Smith won with 68 votes, defeating H. A. Watts’ 43.

Approximately one-third of voters marked ballots. Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Murray had a boy Oct. 20; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Lowe had a girl Oct. 20; Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Brown had a boy Oct. 11. The snack bar, closed for a year, is being enlarged and renovated; the heating system in the gymnasium has been installed so jogging and volleyball are now held there.

Rivers and District Figure Skating Club was pleased at its registration night on Oct. 15 when 52 skaters joined; the number is “considerably” more than last year. Stepping up

n the news business, we often see people’s disengagement with their greater community. It can get depressing when it seems as though people just don’t care– they don’t care about organizations or events, they don’t care about politics, policies or elections. They read the stories, but they don’t step up.

But this week was MY different.

PERSPECTIVE T h i s week, we saw the people of the Neeate pawa area actually acKman tKinson get out and show support for what they feel is important.

It started last week with an AGM. On Oct. 14, over 50 people showed up at the AGM for Neepawa’s community access TV station, NACTV. NACTV provides hours of programming chronicling the Neepawa area. On NACTV, you can see things like council meetings, hockey games and interviews with local individuals. Because of the work of dedicated volunteers, the station broadcasts local events, meetings and sports across Canada, through cable and satellite broadcasting. NACTV puts Neepawa out into the greater world. It’s a community asset and something about which we should be proud, after all, we are one of the few communities to still have such a station.

The station relies on volunteers and of the people who came to the AGM, all but about three had volunteered with the station during the last year. Almost all of them were upset. They wanted to see changes in the organization’s board and the direction the station was taking. Some disagreed with the organization’s new bylaws and many worried that their voices weren’t being heard.

At the AGM, the volunteers took the opportunity to make sure that their voices were heard. After much debate, the evening ended with the election of five new members to the eight member board.

The change in board members has meant changes for the station, but most of the crowd seemed satisfied with the outcome and that their voices and concerns had been heard. There was a renewed interest in the station and its importance to the community.

There will be challenges going forward, change is always harder than the status quo, but the community stepped up and used its collective voice to say, and get, what it wanted.

This week, we also saw local voters step in the federal election. In the federal riding of Dauphin-Swan RiverNeepawa, voters headed to the polls to cast their ballots and make their voices heard.

Incumbent Conservative candidate Robert Sopuck was reelected, but the election was closer than it has been in previous years. We know that we are a diverse riding and it’s encouraging to see voters get out and have their say, even if they are in the minority.

What’s most exciting is that voter turn out was especially strong, with just over 65 per cent of registered voters casting their ballot. This is 10 per cent more than the 55 per cent who voted in the 2011 general election.

Nationally, the turn out was 68 per cent and to see strong turn out in our riding, one that isn’t generally considered close, is a great testament to the region’s voters and their commitment to making their voice heard. Across social media, I saw many people proudly proclaiming that they had voted. Some were voting for the first time ever. As a democracy, this is very important.

It’s our citizens and volunteers who determine what kind of community we will live in. I hope this is a sign of a changing tide.

Looking ahead to many tomorrows

T

he two following quotes make an effective summary of what happened on Monday night. As a person dedicated to democracy, I can relate to both quotes listed below.

“We beat fear with hope. We beat cynicism with hard work. We beat negative, divisive politics with a positive vision that brings Canadians together,” Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said in his victory speech.

“We have built a Canada that is stronger than ever,” Harper added. “Our economy is growing and new jobs are being created, the budget is balanced and federal taxes are at their lowest in 50 years.” - Prime Minister Stephen Harper I say “dedicated to democracy”, having run in more than a dozen elections or nomination races between the age of 20 and a couple of years ago. I have worked on many election campaigns, my earliest being the PC Manitoba leadership race in the late 60s for George Johnson.

My personal political career cost me a lot of money over the years but gained me a lot of experience.

No regrets.

So what happened Monday night?

Harper, and the Conservatives should have won. They had a good, solid economic record.

They had done exactly what they said they would do, that is reduce the size of government and reduce the tax load. So what went wrong?

Well, they didn’t sound nice, they sounded mean. I took it as firm, but the Canadian public took it as mean. I hope those same people are on the front lines when we have to stare the Islam extremist Sharia law straight in their covered faces as, assuredly, that day is coming.

Canadians may well appreciate firm when that happens. Trudeau, the elder, faced down terrorists, hopefully, Trudeau, the younger will muster the courage to do so when it comes.

And I hope Trudeau and all his supporters are there standing up for the rights of all faiths when the politically correct folks in

So that’s the losers’ side. What about the winners?

Justin Trudeau overcame an overworked campaign ploy by the Conservatives that said he wasn’t ready. Of course that was true, he wasn’t ready and maybe he still isn’t ready but he got off his backside and proved that he looked ready. He showed his father’s backbone and denied the odds, faced the people and without saying his father’s famous words “ Just watch me,” he demonstrated them.

Obviously, I didn’t vote Liberal.

My wife worked for the CPC campaign and on a local basis, it was very successful. You can see the full results in this issue of The Banner. We are Conservatives, but not blindly so. We are Conservatives because in most elections, they portray the values that most clearly represent our own. We make a logical choice each and every election. I stand by our choice this time as well.

That said, Justin Trudeau is a very nice man in public. Who knows what anyone is like privately, but I have met Trudeau and he was gracious. When he was here in Neepawa during his leadership race, he was apologetic to me when one of his supporters publicly attacked me in a very personal and unfortunate way. He obviously has a very nice family. He cares deeply about his task, otherwise he wouldn’t have launched into this whole political thing. He has some good people with him.

However, if he does what he has promised, we will be in for a tough time. He says he will legalize marijuana, that’s a big mistake on many fronts. By ac-

tions, if not in actual words, he has intimated he will legalize some other things that will harm our society. He’s going to send money to foreign countries to fund abortion. May God have mercy on him and us. Abortion is a procedure that should only be performed in the rarest of circumstances.

He’s going to raise taxes on the rich to tap into that mystical pot of money whereby one percent of the population will somehow finance the needs of the 99 per cent. It’s a hair-brained scheme.

I doubt that Trudeau will ever ask me, but I mentioned experience, my experience, and this is what I would suggest he do.

Canada should have a flat tax for all. There should be personal flat tax and a corporate flat tax. The personal tax exemption should be on a per adult and per child basis and it should be at least as high as the poverty level. It’s particularly stupid and cruel that we tax people on their income when their incomes are below the poverty level. There should be no taxpayer money going to corporations except perhaps for technology or research tax credits. GST and PST should be harmonized. Government needs to be more transparent and easier to understand.

You will notice that I didn’t lay any of Trudeau’s father’s legacy at his feet. For now at least, I will take him at his word that he is different than his dad. I hope so, as his dad did a pile of damage to Canada, but I forgive him for that and I will give Justin the benefit of the doubt. He is a man of many words and I will hold him to his word.

God bless Canada, God save the Queen and may God bless our new prime minister.

Lessons we must never forget, Part One

y the time you read this column, the 2015 federal election will be over. The attack ads will have disappeared (praise God!). The signs will be picked up and the voters, having exercised their democratic right, will now revert to doing what they do best—critiquing the governin power and wondering NEIL STROHSCHEIN ment what they were thinking (or if they were thinking) when they enacted the laws they did.

These are rights we often take for granted. This is especially true of those who (like me and my children) were born in the years following the Second World War. We did not live through the horror of two world wars. Nor were we around when some of the key human rights battles (like granting women the right to vote) were fought; therefore, we have very little understanding of the sacrifices people made so we could enjoy the freedoms we have in a democratic society.

Our understanding of these issues is based on the stories we have been told by others. Some are stories we have heard first hand — from grandparents, greatgrandparents or friends who lived through, and in some cases, fought, in a world war. We also have access to books and videos that show (at times in graphic detail) the terrible carnage inflicted on those who answered the call of king and country to fight against tyrants bent on world domination.

A lot has changed in the years since the Second World War ended. We have reduced the size of our armed forces, consolidated military bases and spent more time quibbling over the cost of new machines than making

absolutely certain that when they are deployed, our soldiers, sailors and fliers have the training and equipment they need to safely complete their missions.

And then, when they come home, those who need help dealing with the physical injuries and emotional trauma suffered while on duty often do not get the help they need. Aging veterans, especially those living in remote communities, no longer have convenient access to Veterans’ Affairs case workers. Their offices have been consolidated and regionalized. The personalized service they once received is no longer available. Is it any wonder then, that so many of those who put their lives on the line for Canada and Canadians feel let down and abandoned?

As for me, I cannot visit a cemetery, tour the Legion section of that cemetery and look at the rows of identical grave markers, each of which identifies the final resting place of a Canadian veteran, without wondering what they might say to our leaders and to us if they could comment on the way we appear to be treating our military personnel and our veterans. Their voices are silenced forever. But, so far at least, mine isn’t. So beginning today and for the next five weeks, I want to share some principles that, in my view, guided our ancestors as they fought in two world wars, waded through the quagmire of the Great Depression and dealt with the numerous social, political and economic challenges we have faced since then.

I leave you today with these words of wisdom. They are one of many variations of an original quote attributed to Spanish philosopher George Santayana. “Those who will not learn from their past will be condemned to repeat it.” Next week, I will share the first of five lessons we can learn from our country’s past — lessons we must never forget.

Animated conversation leads to research

A

s we drove along the country roads, the topic drifted and shifted. Several times one of our party of four would say, “Google that.” We all vowed to do just that when we arrived home. Afraid that I would forget the topics covered, I asked a passenger to jot down some of RITA FRIESEN the titles. We started with “rub elbows with”; one reader in the group said it was the same as hobnob. So hobnob was the hit word: “In the 18th century, drinkers would toast each other alternately with the word ‘hob or nob’ or ‘hob and nob,’ probably meaning to ‘give or take,’ or ‘have or have not.’ Toasting each other in this way was to ‘to drink hob or nob,’ or from the 19th century, to simply hobnob,” at times crossing social barriers, a fellowship of the bar.

Then we discussed the difference between flotsam and jetsam. Flotsam, apparently, is debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard, often the result of a shipwreck or accident. Jetsam, on the other hand, is debris that has been deliberately thrown overboard by a crew of a ship in distress to lighten a load. There are different salvage rights on these two, but I gave up on my research at this point and moved on to “die with your boots on.”

We use the term now in reference to one who dies while working — the dream of many a cowboy or farmer.

No rusting out, let me go with my boots on. Research showed the term really originated from frontier towns in the 19th century American West. Another source says the phrase originally alluded to soldiers who died on active duty. The Oxford Dictionary of Idioms says: “Die with your boots on was apparently first used in the late 19th century of deaths of cowboys and others in the American West who were killed in gun battles or hanged.” Cassell’s Dictionary of Slang adds that from

the late 17th century until the early 19th century the expression meant “to be hanged.”

Hence our next subject of interest was Boot Hill.

Again, back in the 19th century it was a common name for the burial ground of gunfighters, or those who “died with their boots on.”

Those were some of the items under discussion. Not surprising considering that in the car were two scholars, a young person filled with trivia and an oldster. We were pretty crack on with our assumptions and so, it was my futile attempt to upstage the youngsters and prove them in error on some point, that led to my research. The conversation was animated and often jocular. Not a bad way to pass the time driving Manitoba roads after dark!

It was not easy who to pick from the five candidates. They all have their good points and their faults. However the waiting is over and we can now rest for approximately four years before we go through this all over again.

The thought occurred to me that when we choose an earthly ruler we have to make, sometimes difficult, choices. However when it comes to a heavenly ruler, the choice is much smaller and more distinct. We can either choose to serve God or the devil, either the perfect Creator or the destructor. I believe it makes the decision much easier. The Lord God tells us in Joshua 24:15, “Choose you this day whom ye will serve…”

When we choose to serve our King of Kings and Lord of Lords, we need to decide only once because Christ shed His blood on the cross and did it once for all.

Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 6:2, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” No waiting required or necessary.

Letters A bully never quits On Sept. 16, 2015 I went to Greenwood Cemetery with some friends. As soon as I drove by his lane, the bully comes up, right behind me, looking for conflict.

This was reported to RCMP that day, and on Sept. 18.

The bully knows I am a coward; for 20-plus years I didn’t do anything. When I had enough, I put up signs on my property letting the public know. Bully became a saint and I became the criminal! How do you defend yourself?

I have no problem but the bully makes his point and leaves, no conflict was not his objective. The bully left and two minutes later, returned with his son and the whole process of conflict was started all over again.

Again on Oct. 18, 2015, Bully wanted trouble and tried to goad me into conflict; I cannot walk away. Bully knows no matter what he does, he gets no punishment.

I have a peace bond against Bully, but he laughs about it. Bully drove me out of Virden court room (there on peace bond). Court knows of this, they have him on tape! Think what Bully does when the RCMP are 50 feet away; how much worse when we’re 50 miles away from police? I live near Bully 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. I believe Bully broke the peace bond and my understanding of it. RCMP in Virden made a molehill into a mountain, which is now a volcano, getting ready to erupt.

Auxiliary assists Alzheimer’s

Seniors elect new executive

By Lynn Madden President Riverdale District Health Auxiliary was approached about working with Alzheimer Society for its annual Coffee Break. We talked to Shelly Brown about holding this in her restaurant, Shelly Mom’s Kitchen; she generously offered to donate $1 per cup of coffee sold. Five auxiliary members helped serve 160 cups of coffee between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19. A donation box was also set up and $128.20 was collected, which made a total of $288.20.

The day was fun and made successful by all those who supported the Coffee Break.

The Coffee Break fundraiser began as a grassroots initiative 20 years ago, as a way to raise funds to support the many essential programs such as respite care, support groups and counselling for families coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia. Today, Coffee Break events are nation-wide fundraisers for the society. They raise more than $1 million each year; Manitoba raised $69,000 in 2014 and their goal for 2015 is $70,000. We CAN make a difference just by going for coffee!

Auxiliary members came away with a greater appreciation of what being a waitress is! We really enjoyed our day of serving coffee and talking to people. We really appreciate Shelly and her staff for letting us have this event in the café; we hope to do another event like this next year.

Rivers 50+ Club held its monthly meeting on Oct. 15; president Ken Young welcomed 21 members and led the singing of O Canada.

Cassidy Davis sent us a thank-you card; she received our citizen award at the undergrad awards at Rivers Collegiate last month.

Discussion was held regarding the floor curling surface. Hugh Depencier offered to organize help with cleaning the floor surface and painting on new markers. The surface of curling rocks also need to be sanded.

Games reports were all positive. Crib is played on the first and third Mondays of the month; all other games are listed on the club calendar. Community members are welcome to attend any of our games.

An invitation was received from Oak Lake Seniors Club to a Halloween party on Oct. 29 from 1-4 p.m.; no interest was shown to accept. We also received a letter from Rapid City to join in their celebration of Valleyview Seniors Club’s 40th anniversary. They are celebrating on Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. with a game of military whist; several members planned to accept that invitation.

Ken brought up suggestions for new club activities which a member has requested. A trip to Brandon near Christmas is considered. Seventeen people were

in favour of holding a potluck lunch, followed by games; Caroline Wells will organize the event but no date was set.

Tuesday morning coffee will remain at 8:30 a.m., as determined by a show of hands.

Undergrad awards A few years ago Rivers Collegiate Institute began presenting its Grade 7-11 awards from the previous school term in the new school year. This change has two benefits: to motivate students to perform well in the coming year and to make June less busy for staff who are working overtime with grades and graduation.

Winter walking program returns

By Maggie Smallwood We all know the beautiful fall weather we have been enjoying is not going to last forever. Sooner or later, Old Man Winter will return and many of us will be tempted to stay indoors as much as possible until spring. Our daily walks become a bit of a bother, but we still need to stay active.

For several years Rivers Collegiate has graciously allowed hall-walking on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the winter months. This year the first session runs from Nov. 3 to Dec. 17, and the second starts on Jan. 5 until spring break at the end of March. For two hours (7-9 p.m.) anyone is welcome to walk the halls. A recreation director did some measuring in the past, and apparently four laps make one kilometre. For those who prefer pre-metric distances, 20 laps are the equivalent of three miles. A nice brisk pace will cover that in less than an hour and burn off more than 300 calories!

The even better news is that you can walk at your own pace, for as long as you want, in a comfortable building, without having to worry about slippery or uneven surfaces. The time passes quickly if you plug in your ear buds or bring a friend to chat with as you walk. Occasionally there are other activities in the school at the same time, but this has never been a problem.

There is a sign-in sheet for each evening, but otherwise nothing more is required.

Upgrade increases Internet speed

Press Release Westman Communications Group has completed a network upgrade for Rivers, which provides additional capacity to accommodate increasing Internet traffic and the expansion of high definition video offerings. Rivers is one of 12 communities in western Manitoba having their network upgraded as part of an 18-month plan to enable members to continue enjoying superior customer experience for Internet, video and home phone services.

“Westman spent $4 million over the last 18 months proactively upgrading our network,” says CEO/ president Dave Baxter.

“We are staying ahead of the curve with our upgrade program, to enable us to offer higher speeds to our members as their needs continue to evolve, especially for streaming high definition video”.

Upon the completion of this upgrade, Westman increased residential speeds in Rivers on Sept. 30.

The primary focus was an increase in upload speeds to better facilitate content creation, online gaming and video streaming. The resulting increases now enable Westman Internet subscribers to enjoy speeds that are up to 70 per cent faster than similarly priced services from other Internet providers in the community.

Legion Ladies Auxiliary

The regular monthly meeting of Rivers Legion Ladies Auxiliary was held Oct. 5; 14 members attended.

President Marlene Hayhurst gave out the undergraduate awards at Rivers Collegiate Institute. The recipient of the Legion Athletic Camp Award was Jordan MacLeod; the recipient of the math award (highest average) was Rachel Veitch. Congratulations to the winners.

A Remembrance Day luncheon will be held after the Nov. 11 service. The service is at Rivers Collegiate at 10:50 a.m. while the luncheon is in Rivers Legion upper hall, beginning at noon. There will be a bake table, penny raffle, cash draw and a fabulous lunch! Hope to see you all there.

The next meeting will be held Nov. 2; Mesdames Joan Boles and Jane Brown are on lunch.

Council clips RM of Oakview, Oct. 13: The Building Committee has met with two contractors at the municipal shed in Oak River; a quote is to be received to repair the north wall.

The new town foreman for Rapid City (Dennis Sinclair)started on Oct. 9. Recyclables have been removed from Rapid City and Oak River depots. The Rapid City landfill is to be pushed back as soon as possible. Drainage north of Rapid City’s fire hall was discussed. Since November 2014 Assiniboine River Basin Initiative has been working to establish an organization where stakeholders work together to achieve environmental, social and economic sustainability for all residents

through collaborative actions across the Assiniboine River Basin. Funding (50 cents per capita) for the organization for 2016 was discussed and an invitation to attend a conference in Brandon in November was received.

Staff Sergeant Bob Chabot was happy to report Oakview has very few calls for service. Rapid City Elementary Parent Group was given the information required to reduce the speed zone at Rapid City School. Council is not prepared to enter into a recycling contract with Westman Recycling at this time. An interim water rate increase will be asked of Public Utilities Board regarding Rapid City due

to water being purchased from Minto-Odanah and rates not increased to reflect that additional cost.

John Thompson, Gord Paddock, Larry Cardy and Gail Bridgeman were all re-appointed for twoyear terms as Oakview`s representatives to Little Saskatchewan River Conservation District’s subdistricts. Minister of Finance was paid $6,263.26 as Oakview’s contribution to Family Services and Consumer Affairs. Contec Projects Limited will supply a new pump at Rapid City lift station for $3,250.

Accounts of $487,178.53 and utility of $15,586.54 were passed for payment The next meeting is Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
