A fresh face

By Sheila Runions Banner Staff n June 21 Riverdale Municipality accepted the tender of Horizon Builders Ltd. for exterior renovations to their office, at a cost of $75,203. (The project had been budgeted for in the 2016 financial plan.) Work began Aug. 2 when slats were affixed to some stucco areas so steel siding could be placed there. The makeover was planned because the front windows “were in need of replacement as there has been noticeable seepage causing further damage to the walls,” says Marci Quane, Riverdale’s assistant CAO. “Overhead doors for the fire department were not meeting the demand of the critical equipment used by fire and rescue.” When the larger fire department doors were installed, they came equipped with automatic openers; the old doors were opened by hand when members yanked a chain-fed pulley. Marci explains this feature was added, “for safety to our firefighters and to provide the most efficient service possible.” Some stucco patching was required during the window/door replacement

and following those touch-ups, the brown colour was painted grey or covered with blue tin. The sides of the building remain brown and “will be assessed and, as necessary, budgeted in the future.” On Tuesday, Oct. 12 Horizon employees were putting the new Riverdale sign in place and save for some “finishing touches such as lighting and the new electronic door access system to be adjusted,” the project is complete. Marci further explains why the process took so long — an early-August start, still not finished by mid-October. “The schedule was set up to allow all material (including windows and overhead doors) to be in stock before the majority of the work was to begin. The reason for this was to minimize the days that construction would interrupt access to the building, not just the municipal office but more importantly, the fire department. The overhead doors were not received until Aug. 30; the majority of that work was completed the beginning of September. Overall, the project seemed to stay on track; the weather played a role in the schedule but thankfully, there were only minimal delays.”
