Captain Underpants comes to Oak River

Oak River School held its Terry Fox Run on Thursday, Sept. 28. Principal Kendra Walker challenged our 25 kindergarten-Grade 6 students to raise more money this year than in previous years. If students raised $900, they would receive freezies; if they raised $1,000 there would be a pyjama day; if they raised $1,100 they would have a movie and popcorn afternoon; if they raised $1,200 Kendra agreed to dress up for a whole day as whatever was voted upon by the students; if they raised $1,300 the entire school would have a pizza lunch.

Students far surpassed the $1,300 goal with a whopping $2,106 raised for Terry Fox Foundation. That is more money raised than any other year that we can

see. Because our students far exceeded all goals, they were entitled to all “rewards.” On Thursday, Oct. 5 Captain Underpants (AKA principal Kendra) led the charge as our pj-clad kids walked to Oak River Co-op (1,1) -1- 06 - FEb 26/16.indd 16-02-22 2:29 PM

for freezies. School staff and students also enjoyed a pizza dinner and then watched a movie and ate popcorn in the gymnasium. Great job kids!

4-H Young Horse Development Project (YHDP) was held Sept. 4 in Brandon. This project provides a venue for senior 4-H members to demonstrate their knowledge gained through the 4-H equine program, as well as to showcase the stock being bred and raised on Manitoba’s equine ranches. Each year, interested senior 4-H members apply; upon selection, members are given a list of participating Manitoba ranchers from whom they may purchase a weanling. Prices are pre-set and ranchers receive half of the purchase price; the balance is placed in that year’s Project Enhancement Fund.

YHDP involves a two-year commitment and teaches 4-H members valuable life skills about taking responsibility, setting goals and applying the knowledge gained. Members raise and train their horses with the objective of presenting them as a yearling “in hand”and as a two-year-old “under saddle.” Members

65 years ago, Oct. 16, 1952 FO Leonard Halpin and passenger FO C. Leake escaped injured after the car he was driving was badly smashed when he hit a loaded gravel truck. The John Patterson truck from Oak River was slightly damaged on the bridge east of Rivers, which is designed for one vehicle only. Rivers Service Station, G. E. Jelliff Blacksmith Shop and Dawson-Evans Drycleaners were each broken into last week and more than $42 stolen. The local election on Tuesday was a non-event as all were acclaimed in Town of Rivers, RM of Daly and Rivers Consolidated School District. Mrs. M. Wiltsey of Rivers harvested a 12-pound turnip this week; the garden at 776 Third Avenue obviously has excellent soil. Joyce Poersch married Bert Reinsch last weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Durrant had a boy on Oct. 10; S. Sgt. and Mrs. Douglas Morrow had a girl Oct. 14.

here are many myths out there and unfortunately, they often generate a movement with steadfast followers.

Myth #1: Tommy Douglas was the father of Canadian Medicare.

No, he wasn’t. Matt Anderson, from Bulyea, Saskatchewan, was the father of medicare. Canadian medicare did have its Canadian start in Saskatchewan in 1938 and was adopted by Douglas some 20 years later.

Myth #2: Medicare covers all medical costs and situations.

No, even Tommy Douglas’ adoption of medicare didn’t cover all medical costs, far from it. And no, today, far from all medical costs are covered by Canadian medicare.

Myth #3: If the government pays for it, it is free.

No, if the government pays for it, it is not free, it comes from all our pockets and often at a much higher rate than if the service was delivered by a private person or company.

Myth #4: Governments have cut expenses to the bone and can’t cut any more.

No, Governments haven’t cut to the bone yet and likely never will. In the province of Manitoba, where there are 14,000 provincial civil servants on the public payroll, plus workers at Crown corporations, plus health care workers, plus workers at all levels of education, from day care to university.

A government will likely never get enough sympathy or votes to actually cut expenses to the bone.

Myth #5: You have to have a university degree to________!

You fill in the blank. The list now includes a dizzying array of jobs from day care worker, to teacher, to accountant and the list goes on.

Ken Waddell bit too much at the alter of education. Many people today have invested huge amounts of money into 20 per cent of the cost of a university degree and while education is light to carry around, it may not have equipped them to get a meaningful job. And please note, I said 20 per cent of the cost.

Our tax dollars have paid for 80 per cent of every university degree out there, whether it resulted in a good job or not.

Myth #6: The housing crisis will be solved if we have more public housing.

No, it won’t. The housing industry has been geared to building bigger and more expensive houses because that is where the profits are. The real need is for modest and affordable housing. A tour of any town or city in Canada will show that housing growth has largely been in the “mortgage heights” sections of town.

There is no real way of curbing the material, labour and land resources going into expensive high end housing and directing it to more affordable housing. Well, there may be a way, but it would mean putting punitive taxes on the higher end housing or putting huge incentives on lower end housing so builders could actually make a profit on so-called affordable housing.

Myth #7: The government has control of housing regulations.

Partly true, but not totally true.

The government makes rules about zoning and building codes liberally across the industry, but they do little to enforce housing rules, especially in existing housing. There is almost no control on over-crowding, illegal renovations and safety violations in housing, be it public or private. A town or city cannot even conduct random fire inspections on housing, which seems ridiculous, given that many communities suffer from some over-crowding and some run down housing stock.

Myth #8: If we only had a higher minimum wage, poor people and students would be better off.

No, raising the minimum wage destroys jobs. Employers cut back on hours of operation and employee’s hours. Employers are very reluctant to hire green student workers as they can hire an experienced adult for the same wages. Minimum wages need to rise slowly and there needs to be a student, entry level wage rate.

The overall answer: If we can bust some of the myths about public spending, perhaps we will achieve greater economic growth.

The only way to make real progress is to apply the truth to any problem.

hen you think about all of the businesses that meet your daily needs– your hardware store, your grocery store, your mechanic shop, your restaurant or your hair dresser, chances are almost all of MY them are small b u s i n e s s e s . PERSPECTIVE Each day, millions of small business owners wake up and get Kate to work, doing JacKman-atKinson the heavy lifting of driving Canada’s economy. They are important to their customers and their employees, but most of them work away in relative obscurity; they don’t get the national attention, or government dollars, of their big business cousins. Their importance is vastly underestimated.

A small business is one with fewer than 100 employees and there are more than 1.3 million of them in Canada. In fact, about 98 per cent of Canada’s businesses fall into this category.

Only 1.8 per cent of Canadian businesses have between 100 and 499 employees and the tiny remainder (0.3 per cent), have more than 500 employees.

In rural communities in particular, it’s impossible to overstate the importance of the entrepreneur— if it weren’t for small businesses, we would have almost no local businesses.

Small businesses dominate the industries that keep rural communities viable. For example, Statistics Canada reports that of the 47,397 businesses in the agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting sector, 47,121 of them are small.

It isn’t just that small businesses supply us with the products and services we need, they also provide jobs to ourselves, our friends and our neighbours. Out of every 10 Canadians working in the private sector, nine of them work for a small or medium sized business. If we want to talk about employment growth and opportunities for Canadians, small businesses play a key role and will continue to do so going forward.

Not only are small businesses the backbone of Canadian employment, they will be vital to our future. The output of small and medium businesses account for 41 per cent of Canada’s gross domestic product and as larger operations tend to plateau into a static and stable status, it’s the smaller operations that are, in general, providing faster-paced growth.

Whether driven by need or desire, entrepreneurs are passionate about their creation and moving it forward. It’s that passion which drives them to innovate and their more flexible nature allows this to happen. In an uncertain business climate, characterized by rapid change, we need to be encouraging and supporting those businesses that can better adapt and meet the changing needs of consumers. Those nimble structures are only going to become more important.

Entrepreneurs and their work needs to be better recognized and celebrated. Small Business Week, which takes place Oct 15 to 21, is one way to not only recognize the contributions of small businesses, but also provide some education and networking opportunities for their owners. Talking to others with similar experiences can help entrepreneurs overcome the challenges they are facing or see opportunities that could be developed and help their business grow. In other words, it can help them take their business to the next level, something that’s in everyone’s best interest.

Next week, as you go about your daily business, be sure to think about the entrepreneurs who have made this possible. Even if for a week a year, it’s time to really celebrate the small businesses that make our communities whole.

Answering Powell’s points

arry Powell’s letter requesting “ further explanation” of opinions expressed in “A Christian Response to Natural Disaster” raised some very valid points.

He concluded his letter by asking if I would respond to his questions in a future column.

Well, here goes. It may take two or three columns, but I will do my best to answer them.

First, he asked why I didn’t make any reference to climate change in the column. Because I get very angry with people who use natural disasters like hurricanes, or horrible tragedies like the Las Vegas shooting as springboards from which to launch a verbal or written tirade on their favorite political or social issue. So I am not about to do something that angers me when I see someone else doing it.

My focus was on the victims. My inspiration was those who responded like one firm in Quebec did recently. They collected large amounts of lumber and other emergency supplies, packed them in shipping containers and sent them

I wanted to encourage my readers to do what they could to help the victims of these disasters; and I hope I was able to do that.

That being said, I need to answer his query about my personal views on climate change. My views are not defined by any faith community. I am familiar with the positions taken by some church denominations; but these views are “my” views—and come from more than 40 years of listening to comments, personal observation and reflection.

The “facts” of climate change cannot be disputed. Global warming is a problem that we’ve known about for years but have not significantly addressed until recently. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (www.epa. gov) has an excellent series

of articles documenting the types of greenhouse gasses being emitted into the atmosphere, their sources and what can be done to reduce them. The writers of these articles present the facts in a fair and unbiased manner; using the best scientific research and the most current data available.

But agencies like the EPA (and its Canadian equivalent) are severely limited in what they can do to address environmental issues because the policies they enforce are enacted by politicians. And politicians often appear to pay more attention to popularity polls and pressure groups than they do to those who have sound data to share and practical solutions to offer.

I am all for measures that will help us reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

But I don’t expect to see any significant reductions from the transportation

and agricultural sectors (the two biggest sources of them, according to the EPA) any time soon; at least not in rural Canada.

Our existence is directly linked to fossil fuels. We do not have access to public transportation. Many of us must drive to work and drive as part of our work. Over 90 per cent of the goods in Manitoba are transported by truck. Our farm equipment runs on diesel fuel.

Many of our homes are heated by oil, propane or natural gas. Few affordable alternatives are available to us.

I am prepared to be part of a transition to a renewable energy economy. But this transition must be a just transition—one that does not impose excessive restrictions or high taxes on those whose livelihoods depend on fossil fuels without first offering them alternatives that they can afford.

Science is leading the way. Government, industry and the general public must follow.

Much delight in the everyday

ooking for an easy read before drifting off to sleep, I selected “Roughing It in the Bush”,

by Susanne Moodie. The opening page is simply titled – Advertisement– and it explains that “Though known as an authoress in Canada, and a member of a family which has enriched English literature with works of very high popularity”, the writer is still resident in the far-west of Canada.

The book was first published in 1852, and recounts the trials and testing that gentry from England suffered in settling Canada.

It is well written and certainly thought provoking.

So much of today is taken for granted. Cholera was sweeping the settlements, discrimination was open; serving persons did not sit and eat with the family, even in a small log home. And travel was tedious. Whether by land or by sea.

HOMEBODIES Rita FRiesen educated, accustomed to fine dining, music, poetry and writing. To travel with a babe into the unknown to be a just and loyal wife was her call. One paragraph half way through the book was marked, and so it was here that I began to read.

The theory is that if I like the middle and the end of a book, it is worth reading all through. I borrowed the book from my daughter for it met my criteria.

“We found that manual toil, however distasteful to those unaccustomed to it, was not after all such a dreadful hardship; that the wilderness was not without its rose, the hard face of poverty without its smile.

If we occasionally suffered

severe pain, we as often experienced great pleasure, and I have contemplated a well-hoed ridge of potatoes on that bush farm, with as much delight as in years long past I had experienced in examining a fine painting in some well-appointed drawing-room.”

I have a deep appreciation for manual toil. It has provided me with ample time for deep contemplation.

Whether punching down bread dough, shoveling the eye-watering chicken manure, chopping wood or stacking bales, my thoughts were free to wander and explore life.

As a child, I worked with my father and it was common to work hard, stop and

I worked side by side with my partner for 40 years.

There was satisfaction with crops grown and harvested, homes purchased and inhabited, families raised.

Used some of my problem solving and walking softly skills! And learned more about myself in the process. I have worked with youth– my children and others. There is satisfaction with the use of gentle words and leading by example. More use of early lessons and more learning about myself!

I understand the beauty in a job well done. I appreciate the beauty of a great work of art. There is as much delight in the everyday as anywhere.

It is indeed, in the eye of the beholder.

Observation

By Addy Oberlin here can I go for a holiday? Where is it safe?

A nice warm part of this world to relax would be great, but is it safe there? Even staying at home can be risky. How can we know we are safe when we stay at home and hide in our familiar surroundings?

Before I think any further the hymn by Ira D. Sankey comes to mind “ The Lord’s our Rock, in Him we hide, A Shelter in the time of storm.” There are many storms in the world.

It does not matter where we go, but anywhere with Jesus we can safely go. When we know Jesus in a personal way and he is our Rock, it does not matter where we go, or if we stay home, because we know that we are on the Lord’s side and He will take care of us. Then we can be assured that in the end we will be “Safe in the Arms of Jesus” by Fanny Crosby.

Deuteronomy 33:27 tells us that “God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” We need to put our trust in God.

Working together

In the words of Henry Ford, "Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success." I am always grateful that I get to work for an organization where one of its guiding principles is to promote collaboration throughout the cereals value chain.

In such a diverse industry, there are bound to be differences of opinion, values and agendas, yet I have had opportunities to see a room full of people put those personal opinions aside in order to benefit the whole. It is important to keep in mind in all of our opportunities to collaborate, what defines success and what we can think about during our next opportunity to work together.

I believe that a major part of collaborative success would have an environment focused on alignment, removing roadblocks and increasing productivity. This can be achieved if each individual and organization is accountable, organized, motivated, engaged and is focused on achieving the best result for the industry as a whole. This does not mean that you have to agree with everyone all the time, but it does mean that you have to listen to the ideas of others. It truly is about having a valuable conversation.

Just as it is important to listen, it is equally as important to check if what we are sharing is of value. Sometimes, it is easy to get off track, or into the weeds on issues that can touch on something that we are passionate about.

It is important to always make sure that what we share is bringing insight and value to the goal of improving the profitability of the value chain and not just aimed at winning an argument or supporting our personal philosophical outlook. Communicating clearly is a major part of what will help define success.

It is also important to note that not all collaborative processes can be successful. If the goal isn’t right, or the collaborative group is not individually ready to communicate together, then the collaboration has already failed. This is not necessarily a bad thing, it can allow for us to rethink our goals and make sure that we have the right people around the table who are motivated to move the process along.

I am part of the grain industry. There are quite a few producer and industry organizations serving this part of agriculture. The whole industry will benefit if we step out of our silos to cooperate on issues like market development, food safety, promoting international trade, sustainability and public trust, science based regulations, market concerns with pesticide residues and many more.

I don’t think we serve our members well if we isolate ourselves within our individual organizations. And we need to recognize that effective collaboration will sometimes require a bit of compromise.

Minnedosa’s primary care centre breaks ground

Physicians, contractors, committee members and representatives from local municipalities gather on Oct. 3 to break ground for construction of the new Dr. Ajai Khandelwal Primary Care Centre, to be built just west of Minnedosa District Health Centre.

By Chantelle Parrott Economic Development Officer The Dr. Ajai Khandelwal Primary Care Centre Committee reached a decision to proceed with fall construction of a new medical clinic facility in Minnedosa.

The non-profit charitable organization has raised more than $1.75 million to date, having received significant support from the communities, businesses, organizations and individuals in Minnedosa and surrounding municipalities. Total projected cost of the 5,036 square foot facility is $2,113,000.

After consultation with the project manager, T. L. Penner Construction and their architects, the committee unanimously decided to proceed with construction of the building and its functional aspects; work is slated to begin in the coming weeks. Travis Penner says, “There are a few preliminary things that need to be done, some surveying, line locating, that sort of thing. According to Gord Lane, committee chairman, “The committee’s decision to start at this time is to preserve the current pricing for material and trades and to complete the project as soon as possible to secure additional doctors.” Completion of construction ensures the ability of Minnedosa Medical Group to provide uninterrupted and improved clinic services to the area, as well as the ability to recruit and retain additional doctors.

Reinforcing that, Minto-Odanah councillor Monty Peckover states the new clinic is a benefit to the region as “it is part of our long-term strategy to recruit doctors into the community.”

In an effort to reduce immediate costs, some features have been held back for tender in the spring, including paving, landscaping and a basement suite which will be completed as funds allow.

“It’s a project that’s been a long time coming and I’m just so glad to see a start,”

says Minto-Odanah reeve Jim Andersen. “The municipality is quite pleased to put money towards it because it is something the region in general really needs.”

Harrison-Park councillor Bruce Dalgarno thinks, “It’s fantastic for the area.

The opportunity for the community and surrounding area to come together to put up a clinic for the Minnedosa area, it’s been a long time coming and we are certainly happy to be a part of it.”

$604,000, while individual donors and families have contributed an additional $340,000, to the total $1,754,000 raised.

Obituary HELEN CLARIDGE Helen Irene Claridge (nee Memoe) of Rapid City, Manitoba passed away October 5, 2017 at Minnedosa Hospital at the age of 100 years. She was born in Brandon, Vermont, June 16, 2017 and married Len Claridge in 1940. They relocated to Montreal, Quebec where their first two children, David and Linda, were born — 1942 and 1947 respectively. Sadly, David passed away from polio in 1949. The birth of their third child, Brian, in 1950 was a blessing from God. After spending many years at home, Helen returned to secretarial work at Steinburg’s in the 1960s. She and Len had an active life volunteering in church and choirs, extensive travelling, entertaining friends and family and many rounds of golf. These activities continued upon their retirement to B.C. in 1980. They both took great joy in their only grandchild, Christianne, with many trips between B.C. and Manitoba.

Shortly after Len’s passing in 2001 she relocated, for the final time, to live with Linda and Ron on their farm near Rapid City, to be closer to her great-grandchildren Joshua and Naomi.

Helen was predeceased by her husband Leonard, her eldest son David, her sister Viola and her brother Carlton. Surviving are her daughter Linda (Ron) Rioux of Rapid City, son, Brian (Lynn) Claridge of Chilliwack, B.C., granddaughter Christianne (Kevin) Klassen and great-grandchildren Joshua and Naomi Klassen of Brandon, Manitoba.

Helen will be buried with her husband Len and son David at Mount Royal Cemetery on October 17, 2017 with Ron and Christianne in attendance. A memorial service will be held October 21, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at Evangel Worship Centre, 355 Third Avenue, Rapid City with Pastor Cliff Paul officiating. In lieu of flowers, Helen requested donations be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Continued from page 2 In 2017 four members exhibited “in hand.” They were evaluated on the elements of basic showmanship skills, conditioning of the horses and their abilities to teach horses to work on a longe line and to load into a trailer. One of the four to be showcased was an animal that originally came from the Kevin and Julie Bridgeman farm near Birtle. Kevin had his start on the family ranch northwest of Rapid City; KJ5 Ranch was owned by Ken and Janie Bridgeman, who had five children.

Two 4-H members presented their two-year-old horses under saddle. Each horse and rider was scored based on their individual performance over a predetermined horsemanship pattern. Keegan Burt, formerly of Oak River/Cardale area, was one participant. The other member showed a horse bought from Kirk and Gail Bridgeman (Kevin’s older brother), who still ranch in the Moline district northwest of Rapid City.

Michelle Larsen is a Grade 12 student at Ashern; the 17-yearold is a member of Interlake Trailblazers and has been involved with horses since age seven. Michelle presented her quarter horse gelding, Lenas Driftin Leo, bought from Bridgeman Land & Livestock.

“What I like most about him is that he’s easy to train, very laid back. I chose him because he really stuck out with his buckskin colouring. I knew he was the one by his conformation and build. I plan to keep him – give him time off to grow and become a barrel or working cow horse. What I have learned from this project is that it takes lots of time and patience working with a young horse.”

Kirk and Gail have been equine ranchers for 36 years. They are second generation equine ranchers; Kirk’s late parents were pioneers in the business.

Gail says, “We farm about 2,200 acres of grain, hay and pasture and have about 30 commercial cow/calf pairs. Our breeding operation consists of approximately 120 mares and 10 stallions. Quarter horses make up 75 per cent and Appaloosas make up 25 per cent of our herd. We have been offering weanlings to 4-H members in YHDP since the beginning (20 years ago) and have had two weanlings chosen as project horses for 2017. We like to see kids raise a foal. We hope they get some knowledge and satisfaction from it; we feel they are the future of the horse industry.

Legion A Ladies Auxiliary

The regular monthly meeting of Rivers Legion Ladies Auxiliary was held Monday, Oct. 2 in the upper hall; 16 members attended. Reports and minutes were read and adopted.

There were no requests for donations this month.

We received a Canada 150 grant for the canteen; new flooring will be installed as well as two new stools purchased.

A Remembrance Day luncheon will be held next month, immediately following the Nov. 11 service at Rivers Collegiate. Members are reminded to bring two items for the bake table, as well as an item for the mystery table.

The next regular meeting of the auxiliary will be held Nov. 6 in the upper hall at 7 p.m.

On Friday, Oct. 6 Art and Marilyn Halliday were harvesting their garden at 900 Willow Drive in Rivers when they unearthed this specimen which contained 16 different fingers. It was an excellent conversation piece during the Thanksgiving weekend.

Rivers United Church’s fall thrift sale was bigger and better than ever this year! A large amount of household donations definitely contributed to the success. The set-up, sale and clean-up are huge undertakings; Lynn Madden and her crew are to be congratulated on a job very well done. Conveners Jocelyn Beever, Pat Dyck and Dianne Kowalchuk are busy finalizing plans for our fall supper to be held in Rivers Legion Hall, Sunday, Oct. 15. October’s church council meeting will be held Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. Committees are reminded to have a representative attend.
