Curling passes — Christmas presents

By Allison Pomeroy Secretary As you may or may not be aware, Rivers Curling Club is very busy these days planning and preparing to host the Canola Growers junior men’s and ladies’ curling provincials Jan. 6-10. If you were wondering why our rings are green and yellow… now you know! Canola Growers are the major sponsor for this event and those are their colours.

Thirty-two teams will descend on our town to play their hearts out on the ice to hopefully achieve the chance to play at the national event Jan. 23-31

in Stratford, Ont. Some teams that have already qualified are: ladies: Kristy Watling, East St. Paul; Christine Mackay, Fort Rouge; Rebecca Lamb, Stonewall; Abby Ackland, Fort Rouge; men: JT Ryan, Assiniboine Memorial; Matt Dunstone, Granite ; Hayden Forrester, Fort Rouge; as well as current World Junior Champion Braden Calvert, Deer Lodge.

This event marks the first time it will be held on arena ice.

Riverdale Community Centre is going to be one busy place! You surely will want to come down

to join the experience.

Weekly passes are now available at three Rivers businesses (Tempo, Super Thrifty and WayMor) as well as from Dianne Kowalchuk (204-328-7690).

These would make great stocking stuffers! Day passes will also be available and evening draws can be bought at the door.

like this to be a community event, not just a curling event.

We are looking for time keepers, ice crew, door/bar/kitchen workers, set up/take down, banquet, etc.

Ken Tait, manager of Rivers North American Lumber, has been receiving favourable remarks on the new appearance of a long narrow shed used to house new lumber.

Weather had caused the wood roofing to turn black. Steve van der Wal and his fellow carpenters changed the colour by using bright blue metal. Steve was surprised that the wood, although discoloured, was quite firm.

A couple coats of paint on the west exterior wall will make the building look like new.

Library archives are growing

By Sherri Dziver Librarian Last year Prairie Crocus Regional Library was the recipient of a grant from Rivers & Area Community Foundation to begin an archival materials project. The goal of this project is to organize and preserve the history of Rivers and our community. To this end, a room in the library (upstairs) has been reserved as the place where our history will be preserved, organized and available for the public to view. Some work has been done, but it is an ongoing process. Over the years the library has collected many documents, photos and historical material. A few examples of material being archived are the collections of the Canadian Air Force Base Rivers, Oo-Za-We-Kwun Centre Inc., history of town businesses, police department, RM of Daly, Wheatland history, Heritage Resource Collection, Darryl Harris collection, RCI yearbook collection, and many more. It will continue to grow over time as more documents/history are added.

Archives are meant to be places to store one-of-akind material that can be used for historical and re-

search purposes. For most small communities, having archival material is just a dream, but through the generosity of Rivers & Area Community Foundation, we are making this a reality. The archives will only be able to accept text documents, photos, forms of media slides, CDs or DVDs. Since we have a limited space to organize and store, it will be necessary to review material to ensure it meets with our criteria. If you have material you would like to discuss, please contact Sherri Dziver at 204-328-7613 or email pcrl@mts.net. Material will have to be reviewed by appointment only please.

Financially, the archives will be under the umbrella of the library, but no operational funds of the library will be used for the project. It will be an independent operation, and therefore, fundraising is necessary to ensure its ongoing process — we will graciously accept any cash donations toward the project. We hope you will take the opportunity to come visit and see some of the work being done.

By Warren Smallwood Publicity The Nov. 9 meeting of Rivers Legion was called to order by Comrade Darryl Childerhose at 1930 hours; 12 members were present. Much of the meeting was taken up with a final review of the Remembrance Day services. Besides the main service on Nov. 11, a number of members will be involved in three services on Nov. 10. The Rivers Collegiate service is at 10:30 a.m., Riverdale Personal Care Home at 1 p.m. and the final one is at Rivers Elementary School at 2:20 p.m.

Last year the main service could not be held at the high school because

of renovations to the gym floor. Being back there this year makes things less hectic since a lot of the set up is done for the collegiate service the day before. The gym also has better accessibility for seniors and easy use of PowerPoint projection on the stage.

Other business included a report that the Halloween party was a success. All those present thought the band, Plan B, was very good.

The Legion bonspiel was changed to Nov. 28 from Nov. 21. A $100 donation was approved for the RCI Rams volleyball tournament.

The latest Legion magazine has an insert called Last Post. This feature is printed twice a year; it lists veterans who have died in the last year. The listing is reserved for ordinary and life members of Royal Canadian Legion at the time of their death, and Canadian war veterans (Second World War, Korean War, Gulf War, Afghanistan) who were not Legion members at the time of their death.

Names can be submitted for Last Post through your local legion. A complete database of all names is available at legionmagazine.com. Only those reported within a year of

Rivers Legion believes in recycling. This was very evident when nominations were made for some executive positions; each was acclaimed, but there are changes. There were seven executive positions up for grabs, so it was impossible to have an even number of males and females; however, we did come close. More news will be available next month.

65 years ago, Nov. 16, 1950 Rev. Harry Dodd announced his resignation from Rivers Daly and Pettapiece United Churches last Tuesday though he is being very generous; he won’t quit until June. 30, giving the boards ample time to find a successor. Mr. and Mrs. James Bromley celebrated their 50th anniversary on Nov. 13.

Rita Common married George Wright last weekend. Mr. and Mrs. M. Klwalchuk had twin boys on Nov. 3; Cpl. and Mrs. James Flaherty had a boy Nov. 10; Pte. and Mrs. David Williams had a boy Nov. 11.

55 years ago, Nov. 10, 1960 St. Thomas’ Anglican Church in Rapid City was filled to capacity last Sunday afternoon for their 80th anniversary. A special event at the service was the baptism of a fifth-generation connected to the church, Victor Burstal; his mother Shirley Haslen and great-grandmother Mrs. George Haslen were also baptized there as infants and his great-greatgrandparents Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Preistley were the first couple married in that church, on June 17, 1882.

Bradwardine Curling Club members have decided to dig a new well from inside the rink; works bees are being held every day until the job is completed. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Collister had a boy Nov. 5. Carmin Henry married Melvin Grasby on Nov. 5. Lorne McTavish of Cardale district flew from Winnipeg to Germany on Sunday; he was given the week-long vacation for selling the most tractors in 12 months.

45 years ago, Nov. 12, 1970 John Ruml accepted management duties at Beaubier Gordon Hotel in Brandon on Nov. 9, so his brother Jim Ruml, is succeeding him as manager of Gordon Alexandra Hotel in Rivers.

The light beacon at Rivers’ airbase control tower was turned off on Oct. 15 for the first time in more than 30 years as it became an uncontrolled aerodrome. Mr. and Mrs. James McGean had a boy Oct. 18; Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Peters had a girl Oct. 23; Mr. and Mrs. Dave Rush had a boy Oct. 24.

Forman Motors, Rivers and was given last week. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dyck had a girl Nov. 11. Eileen Gullickson married Tim Hillier on Nov. 6. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Lawrence celebrated their 45th anniversary on the weekend. Rivers Collegiate held a special Remembrance Day Service on Nov. 9 when they showed Battle of Britain, a film which explains the battle and resulting establishments of Canadian Forces Bases (CFB); the school chose to show this film to celebrate the 50th anniversary of CFB Rivers.

15 years ago, Nov. 11, 2000 Winter came with a vengeance on Nov. 5 and after three full days of snow, more than a foot had fallen and high winds on Wednesday whipped drifts into peaks of more than two feet. The storm disrupted power in Rivers, a number of hydro pole arms snapped from the weight of lines and sparks arced across Hwy. 25 near Larry Fast’s farm two miles east of Rivers. Rolling River School Division buses were cancelled Monday and Tuesday and Forrest also had no bus runs on Wednesday as well. An icy road on the hill at Don Mitchell’s one mile east of Rivers was to blame for a two-truck collision; Jeffery Christie was unharmed and Zbigniew Gniteckie (both of Rivers) suffered minor injuries. A group of 18 seniors travelled to Brandon’s Ag Ex last Thursday for card games; Mary Griffiths and Ellen Kitzler came home with a fourth-place win in crib. John Fast retired as public works foreman, Town of Rivers, on Oct. 31, after 12 years of service; a retirement party held in his honour was attended by 175 people. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Nicolajsen had a girl Oct. 27. Mr. and Mrs. Graeme Shaw celebrated their 50th anniversary on Nov. 10.

5 years ago, Nov. 12, 2010 There were three twovehicle accidents in Rivers in eight days, Oct. 28, 31 and Nov. 5; no significant injuries were reported and the guilty drivers have all been charged. Tri-Town Minor Hockey held its first breakfast club meeting on Nov. 3 in which 21 kids aged five to 17 came to Riverdale Community Gardens at 7:20 a.m. for hockey practice and then a pancakes and sausage breakfast, all before going to school; the free club will meet each Wednesday. Rivers Rams high school girls soccer team won the Zone 7 championship for the third consecutive year so travelled to Swan River for provincial play last month; ranked in eighth-place, they came home consolation champions.

On Nov. 7 police came to my home regarding Greenwood Cemetery; that day I found out about the surveillance camera(s) there. I have been caretaker at Greenwood for 40-plus years. In all my years there, I’ve never had any vandalism whatsoever, but when the uncle of the bully was buried there things changed. Bully cut fence, and ran into on occasion, to remove dirt. I told my boss, which he said I was to ignore, which I did.

After years of being tormented, I decided to resign as I felt I was one person who was not supported by the community.

If you go into any public stores they have a sign that informs you you are under surveillance cameras. Greenwood Cemetery has no such signs posted or advertised to let the public know about the cameras. I believe this is an invasion of my privacy, considering I was not aware of myself being filmed/photographed/videoed.

Any organization I belong to, the president/manager has to be accountable to the secretary-treasurer, therefore the board and general public is informed. This manager/ president of Greenwood Cemetery is great friends with Bully and is employed by him. I believe this incident that happened at Greenwood is retaliation for the letter I printed in Rivers Banner Oct. 23.

It’s hard to be a law-abiding citizen when for years, I’ve been harassed and pushed around by this bully, the community, and now the RCMP, with no results. How long would you walk away before you defend yourself?

Opening the doors would be nice

L

ate on Sunday, a story was gleefully written by the CBC that a lady had posted a Facebook message regarding her son, a scientist in the employ of the Canadian government. Basically, it said that with the election of the new federal Liberal government that government scientists (and by implication all government workers) would now be able to talk to the media about their work. I say, gleefully written, because the CBC will do anything they can to continue to paint the former Conservative government in bad light, but that’s another story Whether, the FB message is accurate or not, I have no way of knowing, but it could well be. It has little to do with the practises of federal Conservative government. It has a lot more to do with how governments, at all levels, operate these days. The cone of silence treatment of media is widespread and penetrates all levels of government and businesses for that matter.

There are two reasons. One is that governments (and businesses) have mistakenly adopted the idea that silence is better than information, that what information that is let out has to be very controlled. The second reason is that very few people and even fewer journalists actually check out what they are being told.

Whatever sounds good and fits the news flavour of the month for media becomes a big story.

Here are some examples of the first reason. Yes, the federal conservatives did control their message. They were following the Liberal Party of Canada and the Manitoba NDP who both do the same thing. The NDP have nearly two hundred paid communicators to put out their limited information messages.

Ken Waddell sessions in-camera, away from any public questioning. They are often tempted to put even petty stuff into those meetings so the public doesn’t get to know what’s going on. The regional health authorities are really bad, as basically only the RHA CEOs can speak to media or the public.

Ask them how many beds are being used at a local care home and you would think the local manager could tell you, but not usually. You have to get every bit of information from the head of the RHA. Seeing as there are about 4,000 RHA employees, it’s pretty much impossible to get information on local issues. Occasionally, they put out a press release but it’s rare and it’s never about anything bad unless they absolutely have to say something about a rural hospital emergency room closure or something of that nature.

It used to be that hospital administrators, government department heads and cabinet minsters used to be able to talk to the media. Not much any more. Why has this happened?

It’s because governments (and businesses) are very fearful of their message being twisted.

Instead of fighting misinformation or accusation with facts, they hide behind privacy laws, cabinet communications officers or occasionally their talking head CEOs.

As to the second reason, journalists and people in general, are only interested in the quick fix.

If it can’t be said in 140 characters on Twitter or in a 10 second sound bite, the story has a hard time finding the light of day.

Journalists tend to be in such a rush to get their message out as quickly as possible and with as little work as possible they end up grabbing onto any scrap of information. They slap on a headline, wrap it in some old, previously published information and call it a story. Job done, let’s move on! As Conrad Black said many years ago, journalists are lazy. He’s correct, journalists are often very lazy.

News organizations including TV channels, newspaper groups and radio stations want to fill space or air time as cheaply as possible. With all those characteristics wrapped together, you get shallow, quick news stories lacking both substance and accuracy.

Maybe the new federal Liberal government will open up the veils of secrecy that have enveloped governments at all levels.

Hopefully that will happen but journalists have to do their job too. It’s called thinking, analyzing, questioning – all old time reporting tools that have mostly disappeared in a world of quick fix news shrouded in bias and political correctness.

’ll be honest, I don’t really like the idea of the government knowing that much about me. Though neither myself, nor anyone that I know, have ever faced hardship at the hands of government, I still feel uneasy.

Despite this sense of uneasiness, I am happy to hear that the mandatory long form census will be returning next year. A day after taking office, the Liberal government announced that the long form census would be MY returning for PERSPECTIVE 2016.

Even though I don’t really like sharing personal information, I acate cept that this acKman tKinson information is needed to provide an accurate picture of Canada and Canadians.

For the 2011 census, the mandatory long form census was replaced with the National Household Survey (NHS). The major difference was that the NHS was voluntary and this had a profound impact on the data collected. While the 2006 mandatory census had a response rate of 93.5 per cent, the response rate to the NHS was just 68.6 per cent.

The problem with such a low response rate is that for many smaller communities, the results don’t meet the threshold for reliability and therefore, can’t be used. While Stats Can has short form census data about the people in these communities, there is nothing beyond this basic information. There is no information about characteristics such as country of birth, Aboriginal identity, mobility, level of education, income or how much they spend on shelter. We know nothing about their work: whether they are employed or not, how many hours they work, whether they own a business, their occupation or the industry in which they are employed.

Nationally, the low response rate has meant that there is no NHS data for 20 per cent of the country’s 4,556 census subdivisions. This means that not only do local governments and organizations not have this information to better serve the needs of their communities’ residents, but information from these communities isn’t aggregated into national data on employment, poverty or divorce.

Close to home, there is no data available about the RM of Rosedale. In other communities, while they have NHS data reported, the non-response rate is close to 50 per cent, the cut off at which the data is considered useless and not reported.

For example, the RM of Elton had a non-response rate of 48.3 per cent while the RM of Woodworth had a non-response rate of 46.8 per cent.

Ending the long form census was supposed to save money, but instead, the NHS cost $22 million more than the long form census. Because fewer Canadians responded to the NHS, it had to be sent to more households to get statistically significant data.

While the long form census was sent to one in five households, the NHS was sent to about one in three households.

A voluntary census also tends to skew the data, as certain groups, such as the very wealthy, the very poor, Aboriginals, immigrants and rural Canadians, tend to have lower response rates. The problem is that we are trying to help many of these Canadians through programs and policies, but don’t have accurate data about them.

The lower response rate also leads to questionable data when communities are undergoing rapid change, as ours has been.

Many in Neepawa questioned the 2011 population and immigration numbers, feeling they were too low. The NHS showed that Neepawa was home to 3,400 residents, 185 of whom had immigrated to Neepawa between 2006 and 2011.

Even for communities with enough NHS data to publish results, the changing nature of some communities means that the data provides misleading results.

Realistically, “the government” already knows a great deal about me: Vital Statistics knows my age, where I was born and parents’ names; Revenue Canada knows now much I make; Citizenship and Immigration knows when I last left the country and for how long; my municipality knows where I live, how long I’ve lived there and approximately how much my home is worth and CSIS might be watching my Facebook page and know what I ate for breakfast. Helping Stats Canada aggregate this information into one source is the price we have to pay if we want an accurate picture of the needs and challenges facing Canadians.

Lessons... Part Four

T

his past year the world celebrated two significant anniversaries. May 8 was the 70th anniversary of Victory NEIL STROHSCHEIN in Europe Day. On May 8, 1945, officials from the German government signed the document signifying their country’s unconditional surrender to the Allied armies; the war in Europe was finally over. Sept. 2 was the 70th anniversary of Victory in Japan Day. On Sept. 2, 1945 representatives of the Imperial government of Japan boarded USS Missouri and signed the document signifying their country’s unconditional surrender, ending the war in the Pacific.

The Second World War was by far the costliest war we have ever fought. More than 60 million people — military and civilian — lost their lives, six million of which were Jewish people who died in the death camps. Billions of dollars were spent and it would take years of work and billions more to bury the dead, clean up the mess and rebuild the infrastructure destroyed in the war.

After 70 years, it’s helpful to look back and ask ourselves: “What have we learned from that history?” Or perhaps we should be asking: “Have we learned anything from those years?” We are still going to war. The killing hasn’t stopped. And it’s all because we haven’t learned the one lesson that we should have learned. The lesson: it only takes one spark to start a major fire.

The spark that started the first war was a trigger, attached to a gun in the hand of an assassin who took the lives of

two members of Austria’s royal family.

Austria and Germany vowed to get even with those who committed this act. But to do so, they had to invade Serbia. And when they did, the First World War was officially under way.

The spark that triggered the second war was the Treaty of Versailles, which ended the first war. When a young Adolf Hitler read the terms of the treaty, his anger could not be contained. He vowed to get even with those he called “traitors who, by ending the war and signing the treaty, had stabbed the German people in the back.” The fire his anger ignited spread throughout Europe, Asia and into North Africa. By the time hostilities finally ceased, every nation on earth had been drawn into the battle. One spark triggered an inferno that engulfed the entire world.

The same thing can (and does) happen in our world. One misspoken word is all it takes to start a dispute. Left unresolved, the dispute can become an argument. If others get involved and take sides, the dispute can divide families and even countries. In extreme cases, that minor dispute can become a raging inferno that triggers another major war.

If we want to end war in our world, we need to attack it at its roots. We need to start treating one another with respect, loving them as God has loved us; accepting them as God has accepted us and forgiving them as God has forgiven us.

Differences between people will always happen. Disagreements will be common.

But in an atmosphere of mutual respect, those disagreements can be worked out; they don’t have to escalate into open conflict that divides communities. By learning to work together we can avoid conflict and build a safe world.

Why do I not sleep?

t’s strange how a topic that never received much attention — or not much of my attention — is about RITA FRIESEN sleep patterns. It may have been the setting of the clocks. It may have been random acts of trivia that struck; what I read and what I heard got me thinking. Never a safe thing!

One article told me that way back when, before electrical lights and “light pollution,” people went to bed when it was dark. They would sleep for several hours, get up and eat, or if you lived in Europe, visit your neighbours, share a cup of something hot around the hearth fire, and head back to bed until morning light. Sum total of a night’s sleep was usually eight hours.

There was a period of time when I followed a pattern similar to that. Slight variation, but sleep from midnight until two, wake steaming hot, attempt to cool down, struggle to reclaim sleep, and rest from five to seven. I did not get up and get to work or go visiting; I was irate and ugly. The middle of the night deserves

sleep, and menopause was robbing me!

Sleep deprivation can cause irritability, and fatigue can cause one to resent the job.

Did you know: “The effects of chronic sleep deprivation include elevated blood pressure and blood glucose levels, depression of the immune system, increased risk of ulcers and heart disease, memory loss and heightened appetite. Every nuclear accident in the world has happened on the night shift. So did the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989.”

You would think that with the symptom of increased appetite, and that can only be followed by a weight gain, that I would be hooked on sleep. All the stats are convincing. If only I didn’t love the late night quietness so much! That’s a strange one as well. Now my days are quiet, so why do I long for the silence of the midnight hour? No matter my intent, by the time I have played the last game of Scrabble, solitaire and Spider Solitaire, it is very late! It is my custom to read for at least a little while before lights out. I puzzle myself. What would I do if the power went out, ending electronic entertainment, restricting reading to a flickering candle light? I would probably go to bed, perchance to sleep.

Cops corner Beef bits

By Bruce Klassen Chief Rivers Police Service had 57 calls in October; eight of them were in the Criminal Code category. There were two thefts under $5,000 (24 to date in 2015), three properties damaged (13), one fraud (22) and two various other crimes such as breaches, public mischief, harassing phone calls, etc. (19).

In total to date there have been 88 Criminal Code cases in 2015 which include four sexual offences, four assaults, one other violent crime (extortion, threats, etc.) and one break and enter.

Five traffic statistics were logged in October, all in provincial charges — one suspended driving and four others, such as speeding, unregistered, no licence, etc.

There have been 93 traffic cases so far this year; one impaired driving, one driving without care/attention, two suspended driving, 69 other.

Liquor and Gaming Control Act and Intoxicated Persons Detention Act (IPDA) were barely used with only one case last month, that being IPDA/breach of peace. So far there have been 12 cases in this section of reporting, one each of possessing liquor in an unauthorized manner and possession by a minor/consuming liquor under age

18; the other 10 have been IPDA/breach of peace.

Rivers Police Service enforced bylaws four times and each time was in animal control. There have been 38 enforcements in 2015 with six being nuisance, 25 animal control, four burning and three traffic.

We continue to support other agencies and did so 30 per cent of the time last month. We assisted the public seven times, RCMP twice and other agencies once. In 10 months we have helped the public 37 times, other agencies 14 times, RCMP 43 times and provided finger prints (pardons)/ police reports five times.

As always, miscellaneous categories have the highest numbers. In October there were two calls relating to mental health (11 to date), two 9-1-1 calls (three), eight noisy parties/disturbances (36), one lost property (11), one trespass (one) and 15 miscellaneous (145), which includes unfounded complaints. There have been 249 miscellaneous cases in 2015; 17 community relations, two missing persons (both located), 12 alarms, one Child and Family Services and 10 found properties.

Obituary EDITH GILLETT (WIENS) Edith Irene Gillett (Wiens) nÊe Bell of Riverdale Municipality passed away peacefully at Hamiota District Health Centre on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at the age of 78 years. Edith was born on May 16, 1937 in Dauphin, Manitoba. Mom’s early life was spent growing up in Dauphin with her younger brother, Ken. She enjoyed curling and youth groups with the church. Her family later moved to Brandon where she completed her education at Brandon Collegiate.

She worked for a local lawyer for several years and then took time to raise her children and look after the farm. As the kids got older, she started working at Police and Fire Services at Oo-Za-We-Kwun Centre. When the training centre closed down, she became the secretary at the local high school.

She married Jack Wiens on February 25, 1956 and together they had four children, David, Cameron, Jo-Anne and Gerald. Between farming, hockey, music lessons and pipe band, life on the farm was very busy. She was also involved in the local hospital auxiliary, Beta Sigma Phi and activities within the district.

As the kids grew up, the travel bug hit. There were many trailer trips down south to warmer weather. After Dad’s passing in 1993, the travel bug continued. On one of her many trips she met her second husband, Tom Gillett; they were married on November 13, 1997.

For the next 18 years they continued to travel to many destinations, only to come home when the snow melted so they were able to golf in the summer.

Edith is survived by her husband Tom Gillett; brother Ken (Claire) Bell; niece Allison Bell; son David Wiens; daughter Jo-Anne (Vic) Davis, grandchildren Jenifer (Darren) Howarth, Catherine Davis, Robert Davis and Alex Davis; son Gerald (Shelley) Wiens, granddaughter Caitlin Wiens; great-grandchildren Brody Davis, Hailey Davis-Howarth and Mason Davis. She was predeceased by her parents William and Dorothy Bell, first husband Jack Wiens and son Cameron Wiens.

A memorial service was held on Friday, November 6, 2015 at Rivers United Church with a private family interment following. Honorary pallbearers were the grandchildren. MARY ROSS On Monday, November 2, 2015, Mary Isabel Ross, age 91 years, passed away peacefully at her residence in Riverdale Personal Care Home, Rivers, Manitoba. On January 24, 1924, in the farming community of Pambrun in southwestern Saskatchewan, Mary was the eldest of five children born to Alex and Hannah Ross. When Mary was 13 the family moved to western Manitoba where they resided on the Baily home farm, and then settled on the Airey farm northeast of Bradwardine. Mary and her parents moved to their home on Main Street in Rivers in 1968, where she resided until spring 2015 when she moved into the Riverdale PCH. In her early adult years Mary put her homemaking skills to use and worked on several farms in the community, including the Dyer and Wood farms. In 1952 her career with Manitoba Telephone System began in Oak River, where she worked as a telephone operator with her very good friend, Sadie Purdy. When the office in Oak River closed, Mary’s workplace changed to Brandon. After 32 years of dedicated service, Mary retired from her supervisory position with MTS in 1983.

Mary (Martha to many) had many varied interests and her seemingly endless energy propelled her through life. She had a true passion for gardening which she inherited from her father, and was an avid birdwatcher. Mary very much enjoyed and treasured the beauty of nature. She played several sports, including baseball as a young woman, and curling and golf well into her 80s. Mary was a talented baker and cook who enjoyed hosting family and friends. She also enjoyed travel, socializing with friends, playing cards/games, outings with ladies of the Red Hat Society and volunteer work within the community including Riverdale District Health Auxiliary and St. James’ Anglican Church. Faith was an important part of Mary’s life and she believed in actively living that faith. In retirement Mary had the time to take up painting and was quite an accomplished artist.

Remaining to cherish her memory are her brother Jim Ross of Calgary, Alberta, sister Shirley Hunt of Oak Lake, Manitoba and numerous nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and -nephews. Mary was predeceased by her parents Alex and Hannah Ross, brother Alan, sister Marjorie (McIntyre), sisters-in-law Cecelia Ross and Betty Ross and brothers-in-law, Gib McIntyre and Fred Hunt.

A ceremony to celebrate Mary’s life will be held Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. at St. James’ Anglican Church (Rivers) with Rev. Sally Carter officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church basement. A private family interment will take place at Ancrum Cemetery after the reception. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Mary may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street Brandon, MB R7A 2W8 or Riverdale Health Services District Foundation Inc., Box 222, Rivers, MB R0K1X0.

By Lorrie Dyer Our six-week session of yoga was very successful with two classes running on Wednesday evenings. It is possible that classes will be offered again soon.

The November board meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.

Our open trivia night is coming up on Friday, Nov. 20. For more information, please see the ad in this week’s Banner.

A reminder that Ten Thousand Villages will be selling their fair trade items to the public at Rivers United Church on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 12 noon. We encourage you to support artisans and farmers in underprivileged countries.

As well on Sunday, Nov. 22, all children and adults are invited to attend our Advent decorating evening which will take place from 4-6 p.m. Please bring a potluck item to share after we craft and decorate! Questions and RSVPs can be directed to Ashley Wood at 204-573-9451. This event is sure to ignite your Christmas spirit!

National Philanthropy Day is Nov. 15

The Winnipeg Foundation has issued a 24-hour Giving Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015 where for any gift made to Rivers and Area Community Foundation (RACF), Winnipeg will provide $1 for every $5 donated. All gifts will be placed in an unrestricted fund that addresses the needs of our community now and for the future. These gifts allow our foundation to help our community, no matter how much it changes or grows; check out just a few pictures from the many projects we’ve supported.

Donations for the Nov. 14, 2015 challenge can be made online and charitable tax receipts will be issued; to donate please visit www.endowmanitoba.ca.

Cheques can also be mailed to RACF, Box 714, Rivers, MB R0K 1X0 and, as always, charitable tax receipts will be provided.

RACF assisted Rivers Ag Society with washroom upgrades.

Rod and Shelley Foster, Gord and Michelle McFadden, John and Mavis MacLellan, Dave and Donna Falkevitch and Piet and Willie van Lankvelt celebrated their 35th anniversaries and donated money to RACF.

RACF donated toward playground equipment at Rivers Elementary School.

RACF was one of the grant providers present at the launch of Telehealth services at Riverdale Health Centre.

The Thomas Sill Foundation (Manitoba) is challenging all other community foundations, including RACF, from now until Sept. 16, 2016. For every $2 donated to RACF (until Sept. 16, 2016), Thomas Sill Foundation will give RACF $1; for example, a $1,000 donation to RACF means The Thomas Sill Foundation will give us $500!

Donations come in all sizes and forms, whether you donate something as a bequest, Christmas, birthday or anniversary present, all the money stays in our area for projects that help us all in one way or another. Over the last six years RACF has granted more than $79,000 to various community projects.
