It’s been a busy offseason for Comets festivities. One month after we hosted our third annual slow pitch tournament on Oct. 7, Comets hosted a Sud and Spud/ first ever team awards ceremony at Houstons in Brandon on Thursday, Nov. 3. More than 150 people purchased tickets to attend the event, which included a meal choice off Houstons menu, an alcoholic drink, optional 50/50 and draw prize tickets as well as a front row seat to watching the first ever team awards being handed out to Comets players. The four awards (top pitcher, top hitter, most improved player and most valuable player) were a combination of rewarding statistical achievement during the season and of team and executive voting based on opinion. After leading the Brandon Senior AA baseball league in several pitching categories, Ryan Shaw was awarded the top pitcher award. Shaw appeared in six regular season games compiling a 1.04 ERA with 42 strikeouts in his 33+ innings pitched. Unfortunately run support was Shaw’s nemesis as his 1-3-1 record was credited due to an offensive power outage in the tight games in which he pitched. After compiling a .438 batting average in the regular season of the 15 games in which he suited up, Michael McFadden was awarded the top hitter. The team pick for the Comets 2016 most valuable player resulted in a popular favourite as Michael McFadden collected his second award on the night. Comets often rode McFadden’s hot bat, outstanding defence and ability to pitch in pressure-packed games to a respectable 2016 season. Team voting results for the

most improved player were unanimous as Chris Hillis took home the award. Hillis consistently grew as a player as the season went on, adding timely hits and playing nearly every position except for first base in the regular season. Unfortunately, a severe ankle sprain in the regular season finale ended his year and put him on the shelf for the playoffs. Players weren’t the only winners on this night as a quartet of prizes were handed out. Donna

Falkevitch took home $420 in the 50/50 draw, while followup prize winners consisted of Karen Gerrard winning a free night’s stay at The Royal Oak Inn & Suites; Eleanor Madden and Hank Lemoine won team shirts to round out the night. The event was an overall great success and a tradition we look forward to continuing in 2017 and beyond. This Sud and Spud /awards wasn’t the only big news for Comets this week. They submit-

ted a grant application to Rivers & Area Community Foundation and were successful in their bid. The $2,000 grant will be put towards further upgrades to the Comets field. The team really appreciates foundation members for their careful consideration and support. One last thing to note: our team store has been re-opened, for a limited time only, to ensure pre-Christmas order completion. Check out our link (cometsbaseballxmas.itemorder.com) until

Nov. 17 to get your orders in to Brandon Source for Sports. For more updated information check out Rivers Comets Baseball Club on Facebook or on Twitter @riverscomets. Thank you all for the support this past year!
