Around the house With T. Waite
Sixteen teams of lady curlers rocked the house on and off the ice at the Battle of the Bands bonspiel held on Jan. 23-25 at Rivers Curling Club. Super Thrifty Spice Girls, with the help of some “old spice,” catered a theme-related banquet fit for the stars, including dishes such as Meatloaf, Jumbalaya, Korn and Bread. Life members Doreen Bate, Phyllis Leslie, Marg Taylor and Donna Veitch were honoured and Debbie Phythian delivered an emotional tribute in memory of Barb Punton. The Beatles, 3 Dog Night, ABBA, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Village People, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Jackson 5, Beach Boys, Black Eyed Peas, California Raisins, Elastic Band, Curl Girls and a mariachi band battled for hot prizes. A good time was had by all, including the judges! Congratulations to the winning curlers, pictured here; skips were Jen Treloar, Gail Bridgeman and Dayna Mayor. On March 3 and 4 Rivers Curling Club hosted a seniors’ open bonspiel; 14 teams
registered for this event. Every rink played four games and accumulated their points; 26 was the maximum number of points per game. Winners were Brian Donald of Brandon with 76 points, Barrett Nelson of Minnedosa also had 76 points (he won second place by a count back) and Walter Pickett of Brandon claimed third with 75 points. The bonspiel had some mighty fine curling when you consider the total points were 78 and our top three winners were within three points from perfect! The junior curling season has come to an end and we had a great year with a super group of kids who really improved their skills this winter. This year we had eight teams (some with five players) who curled each Tuesday night. This program is open to kids in Grades 4 to 8. March 10 was the trophy night and after a fun game, trophies were presented. First place was the Brendan English rink; Zach Veitch placed second and third was the rink of Haley Wakelam. Have a great summer everyone, and we hope to see you all around the house next season!
DD enforcement
By Bruce Klassen Chief of Police
Rivers Police Service has partnered with Manitoba Public Insurance and other police agencies throughout the province to conduct an enforcement program targeting distracted driving and other high risk driving behaviours. The enforcement program will run throughout April when there will be a ZERO tolerance for using a cell phone or other hand-operated electronic device while driving a vehicle. Persons found guilty will be subject to a $203.80 fine, plus demerits on their licence. Other high-risk driving behaviour includes: failure to wear a seat belt, speeding, imprudent driving and disobeying traffic control devices (not stopping at stop signs). The most important thing to think about when driving is driving! Each year, on average, 25 people are killed in Manitoba collisions linked to distracted driving. Another 800 people are injured on Manitoba roads due to distracted driving. You are four times more likely to be in a crash if you talk on your phone while driving and you are 23 times more likely to be in a crash if you text and drive.
Early deadline for Good Friday: Any copy (ads and news) for the Friday, April 3 edition must be received by 5 p.m. Monday, March 30.
