Rivers hosts provincial bonspiel S

By Sheila Runions and Donna Morken ixteen senior women rinks were in Rivers March 9-11 to compete in the four-pool Golden Gals provincial curling event. They travelled from Flin Flon, Winnipeg, Swan River, Brandon, Virden, Beausejour, Argyle, Dauphin, Morden, Hamiota, Springfield, Stonewall and Manitou. Other than an opening-day fall which necessitated a trip to Brandon Regional Health Centre where the participant was later released, the event was considered successful by both curlers and spectators. Following registration was practice time, a skills competition and then the first draw. Play began on Monday morning with two draws that day and four draws on Tuesday. Round robin games concluded Tuesday evening so semi-final play could begin on Wednesday morning and afternoon. The final game was between Pat McCaughan of Winnipeg and Joyce McDougall of Brandon who curled in Riverdale Community Centre (RCC) Wednesday evening; McDougall was crowned champion. A ceremonial rink threw the opening rock on March 9; members were Zach and Donna Veitch, Brendan and Beth English. Donna is a life member of Rivers Curling Club and has been curling for more than 60 years. She threw the rock to skip Beth, who has curled for more than 50 years. Sweepers were Beth’s grandson Brendan and Donna’s great-grandson Zach, both of whom are members of the junior curling league in Rivers. This foursome was witnessed by approximately 20 locals as well as all curlers and their small entourage of fans. Local curlers Norman Short, Grant Gill, John Christiansen, Al Morken and Dennis Veitch acted as umpires for the event. Opening ceremonies were held in the Redfern Community Hall at RCC. All teams lined up in the curling lounge with 12 of the 35 junior curlers of the club holding placards with their team name in front of each team. Junior curlers were Brendan English, Emma Roulette, Zach and Layton Veitch, Jase and Owen Wareham, Emma Miskulin, Makayla Bartlett, Megan Hubbard, Nathan Branconier, Connor Dawson, Makenna Scott, Samuel, Simon, Larissa and Nathan Krahn. Piper Jamie McFadden played the bagpipes leading the teams into the hall and then Leslie McFadden, Tara Bray, Donna Falkevitch and Karen Davies sang O Canada a cappella. Greetings were brought to all teams from Mayor Todd Gill, curling club president Norman Short and Golden Gals provincial president Lynda Draper, as well as local co-chairs Maxine Veitch and Donna Morken. Life members of the Ladies Curling Club (Donna Veitch, Doreen Bate, Phyllis Leslie and JoAnn Brandon, representing her mother Marg Taylor) were recognized, with JoAnn saying grace. Entertainment was organized by curling club member Cheri Whelpton bringing back the “Rivers Curling Club ladies of 1965” portrayed by Donna Falkevitch, Lori Kiesman, Pat Dyck and Lorrie Dyer singing curling songs from that era. Cheri then told the Top 10 things to do in a bonspiel. The meal was served by curling club ladies and then everyone was off for a good night’s sleep to begin the rest of the round robin on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. A curling quilt made by club members was raffled off and won by Pam Gourlay, daughter of Gerry and Darlene Gourlay who are building a new home on Seventh Avenue, who donated the quilt back to the club so it can remain on display there. Admission was free so several people took the opportunity to watch the games and renew old friendships.
