The power of pies

By Sheila Runions Banner Staff iverdale Personal Care Home held its first ever pie auction on Saturday, March 18 and co-ordinator Wanda Lennox was astounded at the success. “I was kind of in a panic because of the storm the week I was going to start making pies with our residents,” says the activity director. “But in the end, it all worked out perfect. It was a really fun day and we raised $3,050.35! I couldn’t believe it; it was awesome.” Approximately 100 people came for the 75-minute afternoon event and 41 people, including residents, took bidding cards. The highest pie (saskatoon) sold for $80, then $70, $65 and several at lesser rates. A total of 75 pies were auctioned by Cliff Penno; 45 were made by residents — “We had an excellent teacher in Linda Klassen,” — and 30 were donated by residents’ families and businesses. All pies were homemade and all were of the dessert variety; no meat pies were provided, although two nine-by-13 slices were also auctioned. Residents, with staff supervision, worked four or five hours each day, March 9, 10, 13, 14, 15 and 16 making their contributions for their fundraiser. Richard Brown of Rivers was Cliff ’s assistant, displaying the pies. Janey Brown of Onanole acted as secretary and staff member April Peters volunteered on her day off to run the pie tables. “It was so successful we’re going to hold it next year for sure. Residents were bidding and buying and Gary Pomeroy and Norm Bridgeman sure added to the fun of the day with all their antics. Super Thrifty provided a lot of support for the event — I’m not sure Gary would like me to say how much he and son Gavin spent!”
