Master Anglers at annual derby By Hall Sveistrup A total of 38 adult fishing enthusiasts and 11 children aged 12-and-under (who were admitted for free) converged on Jake Fast Park on Saturday, June 20 for the second annual summer fishing derby which was hosted by Rivers and Area Game and Fish Association on Lake Wahtopanah. The 49 competitive fishers hooked a total of 37 fish comprised of 16 walleye, 12 northern pike, three perch and six rock bass. A cash prize of $200 was awarded for the longest fish in each of the four categories; this is the summary of winners: walleye, Perry White, Brandon, 73.7 centimetres (large enough for a Master Angler Award); northern pike, Ian Straker, Minnedosa, 81 centimetres; perch, Trevor Johnston, Rivers, 22.3 centimetres; rock bass, Roger Beaudin, Rivers, 27.5 centimetres (also large enough for a Master Angler Award). Troy White of Brandon (Perry White’s son) pocketed $135 in a 50/50 draw. Winners of a special raffle for two portable filleting tables were Donna Falkevitch of Rivers and Ian Straker; a Cabela’s cargo bag was won by Josh Haisell of Winnipeg. The two filleting stations were donated by association members Richard English. Each competitor’s number was drawn for a prize from a collection of eye-catching items, donated by Rivers and Brandon businesses. The tournament concluded with a delicious supper of cheeseburgers, potato salad and baked beans
Perry White, winner of the largest walleye, holds high his first Master Angler catch; the fish measured 29.5 inches.

t was 19 years ago that Jeff Maxwell began his teaching career in Oak River; in 1999 he accepted a position at Elton Collegiate in Forrest. In those 16 years he has coached both male and female sports, primarily varsity volleyball, basketball and track and field. He has led the Sabres to multiple high school provincial champions and claimed many wins for both boys’ and girls’ teams. All 16 of his girls’ basketball teams have attended provincial competition and for the past 15 consecutive years, Sabres volleyball teams have been at provincials with boys winning four titles and girls winning six AA championships. Besides school sport, Jeff also coaches community sports, including the Westman girl’s volleyball team, which won gold medals at Manitoba Winter Games in Portage la Prairie in 2010. For this outstanding “track” record, Jeff was recognized by Manitoba High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) with the Grey Cup Legacy Coach of the Year Award. He was presented this plaque at the MHSAA annual meeting in Gimli on June 16. Jeff lives in Forrest with his wife Michelle and daughters Charley and Georgia-Rae.

ivers Police Service chief Bruce Klassen was contacted by a couple in Rivers who received a suspicious phone call. The retired RCMP officers knew protocol so ignored the telephone scam and instead, alerted the local department of this matter. “Someone claiming to be with a police service in Ontario calls and says there’s a warrant out for your arrest. To get this arrest warrant off the books, they want money,” says Klassen. “I called our local RCMP and they’ve had 10 such calls in the rural area here so we need to put something in the paper about this.” Klassen confirms any police officer will have access to all arrest warrants so if you have any doubt about whether one may be issued for you, please call Rivers Police Service (204-328-7430) or contact an enforcement office near you.
Because July 1 is a Wednesday (regular design day), please note the early deadline for the July 3 issue:
