Derby delights dads… and more By Hall Sveistrup Numerous fathers, several with youngsters in tow, celebrated Father’s Day by participating in the third annual catch-and-release fish derby on June 19. It was held on Lake Wahtopanah and hosted by Rivers & Area Game & Fish Association. Sixty adults and 18 youngster 15-and-under took part in the event, which was staged at Jake Fast Park. The 78 anglers hooked 40 fish, comprised of 20 walleye, 12 northern pike, five rock bass and three perch. A cash prize of $200 for the longest fish was awarded in each category. This year cash prizes were sponsored by Super Thrifty Pharmacy, M&M Drilling, Cardale Tech Corp, Gill’s Plumbing & Heating. Mike Perrault of Rivers snagged a 43.6-centimetre walleye; Shelley Moore of Brandon hooked a 77.5-centimetre pike; Angela and Tony Pryne of McAuley caught a 20.9-centimetre bass; Debbie Coords of Rivers had a 22-centimetre perch. Other donors of prizes drawn at random by adult participants were English Farms, Mobile 1 Marine, Luke’s Town Services, Cabela’s, Denray Tire, Sea Foam, Budweiser and Jake Fast Park. Every youth participant received a prize. The other of their prize selection was determined by drawing a pre-assigned number; all youth prizes were donated by the estates of Gordon Bagshaw and Harold Beswitherick. Winners of three special raffles were: Rod Rose, Chimo Resort, back pack; Roger Beaudin, Chimo Resort, fire pit; Lionel Ogg, Brandon, $100 gift certificate. Sheldon Dyck of Gladstone went home $85 richer, courtesy of a 50/50 draw. A barbecue and condiment table served as a canteen. The food service was manned solely by past-president Dave Falkevitch, who served a delicious menu of breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, smokies, burgers, hot and cold drinks.

Saskatchewan success moves to Manitoba

By Sheila Runions Banner Staff im Richardson may be new to the area, having bought a farm between Rivers and Alexander in January 2016, but she’s not new to the world of horses. She moved here to “start a new chapter in my life and see what adventures are ahead” and during her move, she brought along her businesses. Lucky Break Ranch and Tack was a very successful operation in Saskatchewan and because of her three-decade “passion” about horses she knew she had to maintain that part of her old chapter in her new steps of life’s journey. “My horses are my passion. I don’t think of them as livestock, they are my family; each and everyone of them hold a very special place in my heart. I’d be lost without them. I have my horses, mini ponies, mini donkeys and my two goofy llamas.” Through Equine Connections, she received her certification as an Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) Facilitator; this EAL designation is the second most-recognized horse certification in the world. continued on page 2
