Lamb climbs hockey ladder By Sheila Runions Banner Staff
W
hen Riley Lamb was a toddler, he expressed an interest in being a goalie, so parents Vaughn and Sharon Lamb registered him with Tri-Town Minor Hockey League at age three. Now 17 years old, he has spent the last 10 years playing with not only Rivers minor league but also high school, regional and extended season teams; there have been years when he’s been on three teams at one time. Of his 15 years in hockey, he’s been the goalie for local teams as well as Foxwarren Falcons, Minnedosa Bombers, Rivers-Elton Rage, Sask-Toba Rangers, Man-Sask Wolf Pack, Yellowhead Bobcats, and now Yellowhead Chiefs. He was also on Waywayseecappo Wolverines alternate player list in the 2014-15 season and was called upon in the final month to be dressed and ready to play in case their regular goalie was benched with his recurring injury. Two years ago he was named the all-star goalie of Manitoba’s high school hockey league and last year (his first year with Yellowhead Chiefs) he was the AAA Rookie of the Year. This season he has been player of the week, goalie of the month and two weeks ago, was named by Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey as the Team 1 all-star goalie. The citation for player of the week on Oct. 25 says, “Two victories, including a shutout, resulted in the nod as player of the week for Riley.” In early November he was chosen as goaltender of the month (October) for saving nearly 95 per cent of all shots on goal he was subjected to in eight games. When he was named an all-star, league commissioner Greg Thompson attended the Jan. 22 pre-game ceremony to present Riley his certificate and a golf bag; Thompson mentioned, “It is a great honour to be recognized by opposing coaches.” There are 12 teams in Manitoba’s AAA midget hockey league — a total of 24 goalies. Coaches from all those teams vote on players to confer the title of all-star, so to be selected as the best of 24 in all of Manitoba is high praise indeed. The Rivers netminder was the only Chief named to the Team 1 all-star roster (there were two all-star teams) and it was due in part to his remarkable statistics; Riley leads the league in stats. Chiefs play 44 games in a season, which will end next month and then it’s time for playoffs; Chiefs have won 23 games, lost seven and tied five, putting them in third place in the league. To date (Jan. 26) Riley has played 21 of their 33 games and only four have been Chief loses. Of those 17 victories, Riley has had four shutouts (no goals by the opposing team). He has saved 94.3 per cent of the 718 shots on goal — a mere 41 have slipped past him and into the net. To break this down even further, he misses 1.71 pucks per game; on average, opposing teams would have a final score of one or two goals. Although his position is goalie, Riley is also a “coach.” At the annual Derek Laxdal Hockey School in 2015 Riley was teaching younger youth the art of goaltending and as time permits, he works with young goalies in Rivers Minor Hockey. The Grade 12 student at Rivers Collegiate stands a half-inch shy of six feet tall and weighs 158 pounds. It is his dream to play this sport at an even higher level than AAA. Former TriTown coach Graham Common is to be credited for bringing this great news tip to the office. If you have similar exciting events to share, please notify us so stories can be written.
