Rivers tops 2017 Carberry TOC

By Gladwyn Scott Sparked by two goals from Ryland Taylor and a three point performance from captain Gabriel Wanbadiska, Rivers Jets defeated Gimli Vikings 6-2 in the final of the 2017 Carberry Bantam A Tournament of Champions, Jan. 5-8. The tournament all-star team was selected by Carberry Plainsmen seniors; Sloan Stanick from Rivers was chosen most valuable player.

Rivers reached the finals with play-off wins over Elkhorn (3-2) and Russell (6-1). Rivers outshot Gimli 43 to 12 in the final game. In the consolation finals of the 12-team affair, Carman downed Carberry Plainsmen 4-2.

The well organized tournament was carried out by Carberry Minor Hockey, especially the bantam parents. Opening ceremonies included words of welcome from Ian Dyck (president of Carberry Minor Hockey) and Stuart Olmstead, mayor of Carberry. This marked Carberry’s 34th edition of the Bantam Tournament of Champions, which started in 1983.

Rivers Jets have now qualified for competition in the Brandon Tournament of Champions competition next month; good luck to them.

By Kenzie McNish This fall Rivers Minor Hockey (RMH) was again the lucky recipient of a grant from Rivers & Area Community Foundation (RACF); the 2016 donation was for $1,000. The money was used to purchase a set of jerseys for our first ever all-girls atom team.

The 2016/17 season is a big one for RMH. We had just over 100 players aged five to 18 register, giving us two squirt, two novice, two atom, one peewee, one bantam and one midget team.

Each team has two ice times per week at Riverdale Community Centre; game schedules can be found on www.riversjets. com or www.riversrink.ca. The goal of our association is to provide a fun and respectful atmosphere for our players. We promote teamwork, sportsmanship, respect and competition within a safe environment, in addition to a healthy lifestyle.

RACF grants have helped RMH purchase uniforms for many of our teams over the years. The new uniforms look great and the kids have never been more proud to represent their team and community when they step on the ice wearing them. Rivers Jets sends a big bouquet to Rivers Area Community Foundation!

Riverdale rink review

Riverdale Community Centre, Oct. 11: April Toews, representing Razzamatazz Dance Club, was welcomed to the rink board. An ice resurfacer quote for new tires with studs was tabled; the board needs to consider finding a better solution for the flooring before replacing the tires. The studs will keep breaking off if the flooring issue in the back isn’t fixed. If the elevator continues to be an issue, we have been told it is now fixed so we must look at upgrading/changing our current lift system and there are no available grants for handi-cap accessibility. The annual Derek Laxdal Hockey Camp profited $1,400. For next year, if we are within our hydro reading or have solid bookings, another camp may be run in the rink to create a more sustainable month. Flooring will be put down in the bathrooms. “Stock the Kitchen” was suggested by community members; the kitchen does not have enough supplies for a rental. Until we have a commercial dishwasher and proper storage, we cannot purchase more supplies; however, it was agreed to but a coffee percolator for the canteen. Rivers Jets senior men’s hockey team will be changed $95 per hour. The skating ice was ready to go Oct. 4. The curling rink contract starts Oct. 15; Allison Pomeroy will oversee bookings for that ice. Barb Plewes was hired to manage the canteen at a rate of $550 per month, September-April. Other discussion included tournament fees, website fixes updating rental fees for all users of facility), pricing out another C-Can for storage, which is now limited because the back area has been turned into the dance room. We agreed to purchase 100 pucks for the season; 20-25 pucks will be kept in a cool area out of public eye.

Four resumes were received for the third-hand winter position; the hiring process was discussed. Brian Mitchell’s Workers Compensation Board claim was discussed. The TV in the main area was discussed as were rubberized mats in dance area. Jamie McFadden will fix the black PVC “learn to skate” bars and return them to the rink.

The board decided to purchase disposable canteen supplies from German Pavilion for the kitchen.

Dec. 13: Donna Morken, Lorrie Dyer and Michelle McFadden approached the board for approval to apply for a Manitoba Community Services Council MCSC grant. This grant can be applied to for items such as but not limited to technology, recreation/arts/child care equipment, furnishings, appliances, vehicles and program costs. They would like to use this grant to apply for kitchen supplies, appliances, office furniture and equipment. This was something Donna started when Navi Gill was managing the facility; she feels now is the time to complete it. The board’s biggest issue is storage. It was asked that dimensions be taken of the kitchen, so we know we will be able to fit the new equipment into the space we have. They think we will be able to make enough storage in the kitchen, if it organized properly. Price of the kitchen would have to increase for cost recovery. Costs associated with this project also need to be accounted for and fundraised: electrical, plumbing, shelving, maintenance, etc. A unanimous motion allowed them to proceed with applying for the MSCS grant, as long as the kitchen will be able to fit appliances/supplies. Riverdale Community Centre will purchase trim from North American Lumber but Razzmatazz will be responsible to install it in their dance room. It was questioned what the benefit is to having a contract with Cimco and how much the board is saving in the long run. Manager Laura Gillingham will ask the Cimco representative these questions when she sits down with him to review renewing the contract. After collecting resumes and interviewing candidates, no suitable applicant was found for the third-hand job position; it was decided to make it a full-time position. November rentals were noted as: Redfern’s Hall, once Behlen Lounge, none curling lounge, none; skating arena “busy.” The amount of equipment Rivers Collegiate’s Hockey Skills Academy is storing here is getting out of control: two closets and part of one storage room. The board is requesting they greatly reduce that amount of equipment as we do not have the room for it, and we do not want to be liable if something were to happen to it. Over the holiday break, all hockey bags will be removed. It has been suggested we look into purchasing a new boot holder for the skate sharpening; the one we currently use is not functioning properly.

105 years ago, 1912 The temperature this morning was -52F; it has been -25F to -50F for nearly three consecutive weeks.

75 years ago, 1942 Eleven rinks participated in the Red Cross bonspiel in Rivers. Mrs. Dutka’s cat caught a gopher on Christmas day.

65 years ago, Jan. 10, 1952 Joe Bailey, Lorne Forman and T. Smith killed three elk north of Elphinstone last week; the trio created quite a stir in town when they returned with the buck and two does to their respective homes in the Rivers district. Rivers Fire Department has become its own entity, detached from Rivers Town Council. Rather than firemen being paid per call, as was the case under council rule, the municipality will now pay the brigade $30 per call, which they will deposit in their own bank account. Last month was the coldest December on record in the 13 years of reporting at Rivers Meteorological Station. The average temperature was .06F compared to the 13-year average of 8.1F; the coldest day was Dec. 18 when the mercury dipped to -30F. At the annual meeting of Bradwardine Community Club last week, members agreed to lay hardwood on the hall floor. Mr. and Mrs. M. Klywak had a boy Dec. 17; Mr. and Mrs. K. 35 years ago, Jan. 13, 1982 While Keith Lamb opened Cross Town Drive Inn last October, after it had been closed for two

years, it wasn’t until Jan. 8 that the coffee shop attached there was opened; Rita Schenk has leased the restaurant side. When a Co-op truck was filling the gasoline tanks at Cross Town Drive Inn on Jan. 8, fumes from the gas outlet ignited though the fire department was called, the driver had the flames extinguished by the time members arrived. Mr. and Mrs. Brent McCannell had a boy Dec. 29; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Johnson had a boy Dec. 31.

25 years ago, Jan. 15, 1992 Rivers Town Police are investigating eight break-ins in Jan. 11 which netted thieves more than $1,000. Forman Motors suffered the most loss with both safes opened by a cutting torch and contents (approximately $1,000) removed. Other businesses affected were Rivers Inn vendor, till float of $50 stolen; Rivers Inn Restaurant, pocket change from the register; Sears, pocket change; there were entered with nothing stolen: Form Motors muffler shop, Rivers Home Bakery, Chicken Jack’s Family Restaurant, RM of Daly office, Rivers Legion an attempted entry. Results of the Jan. 8 byelection to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Stephen Moncrief as Rivers councillor are:

15 years ago, Jan. 12, 2002 Rivers made national news on Jan. 7 when a 5.5-hour standoff ended peacefully. Michael Roy,

33, was drunk and suicidal but at 3:35 p.m. he exited his 312 Fourth Avenue house and police seized the .303-calibre high-powered rifle. The last stand-off in Rivers was eight years ago when a bill from provincial police (Winnipeg’s Emergency Response Team was deployed) was waived in lieu of services Rivers provides to RCMP; Mayor Roy Stevenson hopes the same will happen in this case. he tide is turning and I hope it’s a sign of good things to come for rural businesses. After a decade of “more” and “bigger”, we are starting to see a real appreciation for “small”.

I read an interesting article on SmallBusiness.com, called “Top Small Town and Rural Small Business Trends For 2017”. The post makes MY me excited for PERSPECTIVE our businesses and the communities they serve.

ATE Post author Becky McACKMAN TKINSON Cray points to three macro trends that are reshaping retail and how they will impact small businesses. The first is redefining geographic limits.

McCray explains that a century’s worth of developments have shortened the distance between small towns and big cities.

She added that innovations such as advanced automation in manufacturing and processing; self-driving vehicles; delivery drones; 3-D printing and augmented and virtual reality will reshape the cost of moving goods and connecting them to people.

Technological changes have already opened a lot of doors for small retailers. For example, rural residents can now work as part of the larger economy. This opens up more employment opportunities, making it easier for people to find jobs and live in rural communities, which is good news for area businesses. Technology has allowed rural businesses to sell far beyond their communities. Through websites or email lists, platforms such as Etsy, eBay, Amazon or through social media, rural businesses can become less dependant on walk in traffic from their own communities.

The second trend is being driven by customers. The last 50 years saw the dramatic growth of big box stores and malls, but consumer demands are starting to shift. Big box retail chains have grown and grown to the point that we are seeing faltering financials, store closures and corporate reorganization. Not only that, but consumers are becoming more alienated by the cold and impersonal shopping experience.

McCray points out that the shopping trends have diverged into two directions. The first is the infinite retailers, these are the companies that capture automatic re-orders of generic or known products. But the second category find shoppers wanting a shopping experience and a collection of curated products. This is the area in which small retailers shine, not only is the service able to be more personal, but so too is the merchandise, which has been tailored to a store’s customer base. The things that shoppers like about online shopping, such as consumer reviews and product recommendations can often be offered in person at a small-town store, giving shoppers added value.

The final factor in an increasing interest in simpler, more “rural” lifestyles. Terms such as “local” and “cozy” are becoming buzzwords and travel articles are advocating smaller towns as destinations. In a sterile and mass produced environment, people are looking for comfort, simplicity and something on a human scale.

Two years ago, Chain Store Age ran a story titled “Momand-Pops are cool again”. They noted that country wide, the number of retailers with less than 500 employees began to show meaningful growth for the first time in 25 years. They also pointed to a survey from the previous year, which found that more than a quarter of consumers were shopping more at neighbourhood stores than they were three years ago.

Close to half of the respondents also said that local stores accounted for at least half of their shopping trips.

At a time when even Amazon, the behemoth of online retailing, is opening brick and mortar stores, the pendulum for retail really seems to be shifting. Maybe we rural Manitobans are in fact trend setters!

Maybe we should look for the silver lining Observation

I

left Alberta (my home province) 20 years ago when I moved to Neepawa. I have now become thoroughly “Manitobaized” (my term meaning I think and act like most other Manitobans) and will probably die and be buried in this province. That being said, my roots are still in Alberta. I try to keep in regular contact with my brothers (one of whom took over our family’s farm) and read Facebook opinions posted by my cousins in response to actions by that province’s NDP government.

This week’s target of choice is the Carbon Tax that came into effect Jan. 1. It will likely add $200$300 to the amount an average Alberta family will pay to fill their car with fuel and heat their home for the coming year.

But, this assumes that the average Alberta family lives in a major city, can take public transportation to work or school and has only one car. Many don’t,

While some families will qualify for a carbon tax rebate, it will only offset part of the total, especially if one family member commutes to Edmonton, Calgary or Red Deer for work from their home in an outlying community.

Some commodities (most notably dyed farm fuels) will be exempt from the tax, but farmers will still pay higher rates for electricity, non-dyed fuel and the natural gas most use to heat their homes, dairy/hog barns and buildings used to service and repair farm equipment.

When the tax is added to the manufacturing and retailing sector, the annual cost to the average Alberta family could reach $600 or

more. So I am not surprised to see the degree of anxiety and anger that is being expressed by many Albertans, including members of my own family.

Well, we better get used to carbon taxes because in one form or another, they are going to be with us for the next few years. They have already created a huge cloud of uncertainty as no one (not even our leaders) really knows how these taxes will be applied or the impact they will have on the costs of the goods and services end users purchase. That cloud will hover over all of us for a long time because any new tax, once implemented, is highly unlikely to be repealed. Remember the GST? Remember who promised to repeal

e live in Manitoba. Most of us by choice.

Whenever folks meet, the common ground topic is our weather. Coffee talk equates weather.

One of my sisters has made her home in a warmer climate, parttime Australia, part-time Thailand. Okay, not only a warmer climate, but a much warmer climate!

She chooses it and loves her homes there. Our conversations frequently touch on the weather. She posts pictures of her: sunglasses, hat, light-coloured clothing with cute captions such as, “37 degrees in the shade, no wonder I look a tad frazzled.”

I cheerfully reply, “Only -18 and no wind, took the dogs for a long walk.” We are different in many ways.

My sister has friends all over the world and continues to follow life in Manitoba in pictorial form on Facebook. She asked me this week if Manitobans have become wimpy, all the posts about piles of snow, trenched

We reminisced about travelling from Graysville to Kane to visit grandparents and driving down a highway that was, simply put, a trench. and remained there to spring. Remember field roads? The shortest distance between two farms and smoother than the washboard roads!)

Our father drove school bus that year and like everyone else in the rural parts of our province, we got to school with real horse power – two horses and a wooden “van;” some had straw on the floor for some insulation and many had a small wood stove at the front. Talk about safety! It was not unusual for a van to slip off the

it if we voted them into power? Remember how quickly they reneged on that promise? Remember why? Personally, I believe carbon taxes will enjoy the same immunity once our leaders see how much revenue these levies will generate.

I think we need to start looking for a silver lining in this cloud—and I think I may have found one.

My silver lining is deeply rooted in my faith in a God who loves what He has created and who had promised to supply the food, drink, clothing and shelter all people on earth need. These new taxes will have an impact on us all.

They will limit our mobility and some of the choices we make. We will be forced to cut back in some areas and look for efficiencies in others. But in the process, we will learn to lean on each other more, as communities and families, and we will learn to trust God even more than we do today. And I see nothing wrong with that.

I pointed out that it was partially the timing of the storms that aggravated the people. One for Christmas, another for New Year’s and another one for good measure. I explained that the wonderful long, open, mild fall had lulled us. Perhaps this was a new normal.

Then I checked the stats.

Winnipeg had the most snow in December since 1908. They received 80 centimetres in that month alone, with the average annual snowfall being 114 centimetres.

Then I reflected on the fact that when we were kids, farm kids, our lifestyle was so very different.

Yes, we had to shovel to get into the barn and yes, we sat out three-day blizzards, but no one was desperately trying to get out and get to a job. That came later.

The long cold winter, the winter of the big snow, it was just the way it was.

“Ah,” said my sister, “lifestyles and expectations have changed.”

How is 2017 starting out for you? Just the same as 2016? Have you broken any resolutions yet or are you bravely trying to keep them?

Starting out the new year being quite ill was not a good start for me. My daughters had to come from Alberta to care for their “elderly” mother. What a blessing to see them! They tried to restore my dignity and help in a physical way. I will thank the Lord each day for my children and their concern for their mom. A doctor finally recognized my problem and with medication, I am on my way to get better, even though I’m still feeling weak.

Many children will understand the dilemma my girls have, to look after parents when they live far away from them. Just be ready to drop everything and get ready to be with them when needed. As Paul quotes us in Romans 15:13, many prayers are needed for our parents to give them peace and joy this coming year.

Recreation report

December was a quiet month program-wise at Riverdale Recreation Commission (RRC), but we are back in full swing for the start of 2017. While December was filled with many stick ‘n’ puck/public skate evenings and Christmas festivities, the remainder of the winter months will be well rounded with various activities in which fall community members can participate. In addition to weekly stick ‘n’ puck/public skate still being offered (tune into our arena calendar for dates), here is what we have in store for you for January.

RRC has teamed up with Rivers Elementary School’s breakfast club to open the gymnasium in the mornings to participate in low organized games that promote the learning of physical literacy. The gym will be opening on Jan. 16 and 18 at 8 a.m. for a trial period. This is a free drop-in program and if it is successful, will be running weekly.

Due to the high demand of the Art Night Out classes that Nicole Metzger puts on, we have added another night of painting this month — Jan. 20. This class still has available spots!

RRC received a grant from Assiniboine North Parent Child Coalition for Rock ‘n’ Read. This is a fun, interactive program for parents/guardians and children aged 18 months to six years. In this six-week course children and parents/guardians will sing, read and rhyme, creating a fun learning environment for all. This is a free program that will be starting Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Here is a little sneak peak at what is to come this winter season yet: women’s self defence classes, yoga, kids in the kitchen, PD days, drums alive and a spring registration evening. Stay tuned for more programs and information!

Rivers Curling Club has their men’s and woman’s curling bonspiels this month as well, so if you haven’t yet, and you would like to, make sure you get your rink in today!

At the beginning of the year we decided to support A Port in the Storm (APITS), a medical hospice for rural patients who require long-term health care in Winnipeg. Those Harding members, along with a handful of volunteers from the community, served a monthly Sunday supper. The suppers were very popular with many supporters coming from several surrounding communities. rofit from these suppers was donated to APITS administrative director Stacey Grochesky on Nov. 20 at a club-hosted “mini mall.” During further discussion with Stacey, the club made a decision to have this donation used for their new program of supporting a suite at the facility for a year. one complaint was filed with the Law nforcement Review Agency L RA the member was absolved of any wrong doing. Anyone who feels aggrieved by the conduct or service provided by a member of Rivers Police Service may make a complaint by contacting any police member or the L RA commissioner at 1-800-282-8069 or lera@gov.mb.ca/ justice/lera. The nature of the complaint determines whether R S or L RA will investigate it. All complaints outside the scope of the Law Enforcement Review Act are investigated by RPS. A number of police-initiated criminal cases and investigations were cleared, partly through working closely with Riverdale Justice Committee. This has been an effective case referral program.

To maintain traffic safety through community education and enforcement, a number of check stops were initiated and a number of impaired drivers were prosecuted. Information sharing and two-way communication to develop new programs with other police agencies is an ongoing process; a number of programs have been initiated. To update the technological needs of RPS, a Technology Master Plan was completed.

Building on 40 years

By Miranda Leybourne The City of Brandon is excitedly looking ahead to the 40th anniversary of Manitoba Ag Days, going so far as to officially proclaim Jan. 17-19 Manitoba Ag Days.

But it’s not just Brandonites who are gearing up for the big event — people from all over the province, country and even United States will be flocking to the Keystone Centre to take part in the historic event, including more than 550 exhibitors and 60 speakers. In addition, 17 new products will be marketed at the show, all revolving around the theme Agriculture — Think Global, Act Local.

Forty years ago the show started out as a one-room weed fair; it has grown into the nation’s largest indoor farm show, taking place in more than 19,000 square feet of space and expecting to attract upwards of 45,000 people.

“It’s certainly been a busy year for our general manager and her support staff,” explains Andrea Guthrie, Manitoba Ag Days media co-ordinator. “We start planning for the next show as soon as the current show ends, so as soon as last January’s show ended we started planning for this. It’s been a big task.”

To celebrate the 40th anniversary some special events have been planned, including a contest where exhibitors display old-fashioned items in their booths, with the top three winners set to receive a cash prize of $1,000, $500 and $250 respectively. They can also choose to donate their winnings to a local charity, in which chase Manitoba Ag Days has promised to match their contributions.

“We are also encouraging every patron to wear something nostalgic to the show. We will be handing out prizes to every patron we see participating in this years’ celebration, so be sure to dig through those closets!”

Another new aspect of this year’s show will be a competition where exhibitors are challenged to highlight a farm safety message in their booth. Guthrie says farm safety is of utmost importance to Manitoba Ag Days,

which is why they’ve worked with Canadian Agriculture Safety Association (CASA) to unveil their new grain entrapment/suffocation demo trailer, for which Manitoba Ag Days provided funding.

“We used to have a safety area, and this is the first year where we’ve expanded that. We wanted all our exhibitors to get involved in the safety message [as well]. It’s so important in our lives. Agriculture is such a big part of Manitoba and the prairie provinces. We’re not close to each other, but it’s a small, tight network of people. To kick off the year with a show is important, to celebrate our success and the importance of agriculture.

“We hope to continue to have the largest indoor agricultural show. Who knows where we will be in 40 years, but certainly we change the show to what is happening in the industry and what our patrons and exhibitors want.”

The show will include a 50/50 draw and a bonus draw for a trip to Las Vegas, an annual breakfast kickoff at Canad Inn’s Roadhouse on Jan. 17 starting at 7:30 a.m. and a social on Jan. 18 at Houston’s Country Roadhouse.
