Thirty-three young aspiring fishers, accompanied by a parent(s) or guardian, thronged Lake Wahtopanah on Monday, Feb. 20. The occasion was the third annual Learn to Fish event hosted by Rivers & Area Game & Fish Association. Upon registration, each youth received a goody bag containing a homemade wooden fishing apparatus created by member Ross Taylor and equipped with fishing line, a bobber, a brightly-coloured jig head, a peel-and-stick measuring tape and a Get Hooked informational booklet. The majority of those contents were supplied by marine biologist and association member Bruno Bruederlin of Fisheries Branch of Water Stewardship Services of Manitoba. Fish bait, in the form of frozen minnows, was supplied by the association. The proud captor of a northern pike, the only fish caught, was five-year-old Carter Lelond of Rivers. Using that pike, and a previously-caught walleye, Craig Lelond (Carter’s dad) performed a fish filleting demonstration before a captive audience of youngsters and adults. The event concluded with a free lunch of hot dogs, hot chocolate and homemade cucumber pickles, served by member and resident chef Richard English. Homemade cookies put a finishing touch on a delicious lunch. The goal of this Louis Riel Day outing was the introduction of the sport of fishing as a healthy family-oriented outdoor winter activity.
A filleting demonstration was of keen interest to all who attended the Learn to Fish event on Feb. 20.

Rapid City 4-H Beef Club held its monthly meeting on Feb. 14 at leader Lesley Hedley’s home. President Wyatt Inglis called the meeting to order. Thijs VandeLangemheen started the club pledge. Secretary Brooklyn Hedley asked the roll call then gave minutes from last meeting. James Reid gave the treasurer’s report. Under old business we learned we can put a new sign, to replace the old one, on the same place; we
will do this later on this year. Thijs gave a report on the Wheat King game held Feb 10; Enns Bros supported all 4-H clubs by providing tickets for the game. A new speech night will be Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the fire hall in Rapid City. Jolie Bootsman and Chelsey Horn will be our judges. District communications will be held March 10 at Minnedosa Collegiate; if anyone wishes to go, names have to be in by Feb. 27. Our club will hold the next meeting on March 11 in conjunction with our weigh day at Hedley’s. We will have a potluck lunch afterwards. The scale will be booked and picked up the same day. continued on page 3 CANADA

Last week five-and-a-half-year-old Sawyer Puhach was frontpage news for winning the junior division at Rapid City’s family fishing derby and today, five-year-old Carter Lelond graces this page as being the only person lucky enough to catch a fish at Rivers’ Learn to Fish event.
