n Monday, Nov. 23 both Rivers Jets squirt teams were treated to an unforgettable hockey practice at Riverdale Community Centre. In addition to their regular coaches Gerald Lepp and Trenton Therrien, four Brandon Wheat Kings players offered instruction that evening as well. Besides meeting some semi-professional players, they were given gifts. “Every kid at practice gets a ticket to an upcoming game and a special treat from the sponsors,” says Chris Falko, Wheat Kings’ community relations man. “The program is the McDonald’s and Canadian Tire Wheat Kings Minor Hockey Caravan. Four Wheat Kings travel to a rural hockey teams’ practice once a month to help the coaches out. The players relate the importance of working as a team, listening and hard work; they also signed autographs for anybody who wanted one. We make five trips a season, October-February. The treat for Rivers was a breakfast gift certificate from McDonald’s.” Tim McGauley, Reid Duke, Linden McCorrister and Stelio Mattheos mentored 40 kids aged four to seven; the program works with beginners (squirts) to teens (peewee). Teams/towns are chosen by Wheat Kings, based on submissions from coaches, the Wheaties schedule and the host town’s proximity to Brandon.
New money for station roof
By Jessie Bell
Six members of Rivers Train Station Restoration Project were overjoyed at the meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Chairperson Donna Morken told them the roofing project was a giant step closer to new shingles in the spring. As reported in last week’s Banner, a $50,000 grant will be received from The Burns Family Foundation. Because the money is coming through Rivers & Area Community Foundation, Thomas Sill Foundation is matching it at 50 per cent so there will be $75,000 to be used on the station roof. Also announced was a $6,000 donation from Partner for Growth through the planning and design company of Hilderman, Thomas, Frank and Cram of Winnipeg. Tenders will be let in the spring for roof repairs and application of good-quality asphalt shingles. Another order of 300 miniature steam engine-shaped chocolates has been received. These goodies are just in time for gift giving and may be purchased at Carol’s Time Again Treasures or Westoba Credit Union. The next meeting was set for Tuesday, March 29, in the same location as this meeting — Riverdale Municipality council chamber — at 7 p.m.
