Three weeks and $300,000+ By Sheila Runions Banner Staff

n 1956 Wes Williams moved a building from Oak River to the west end of the 600 block of Hwy. 25 in Rivers, to augment his service station there. Several ownership and management changes ensued until 1979 when it sat empty for two years before Keith and Marg Lamb purchased the property, which is now called Tempo Place Emporium. After 34 years of business there, the couple has invested approximately $340,000 in upgrades in the last three weeks. Work began on Monday, July 13 and is scheduled to be completed today, Friday, Aug. 7. Upgrades were necessary to meet government standards of above-ground storage; the new 75,000-litre tank sits east of the convenience store. Removed were three underground tanks which also had a total storage capacity of 75,000 litres. Tempo had two pumps, each with two hoses for a maximum of four filling stations with premium, mid-grade, regular gas or diesel. The new digital pumps come with four nozzles so a maximum of eight vehicles can top up their tanks with all four kinds of fuel. The filling station area has new concrete and the propane filling station is also getting a facelift. Rumours that upgrades were done so they could more easily sell the property are just that — rumours. Keith says, “It is not for sale! Our son Vaughn is managing all operations,” which would include the gas bar, convenience store, restaurant and storage space. Keith also says, “Thanks to all our loyal customers for sticking with us through all of this. Better days are ahead!”

It looked like an explosion occurred at Tempo Place Emporium but it was a planned excavation as crews dug up 25-year-old underground gas tanks.

This picture taken Aug. 5 shows the new pumps are nearly ready for service, from the brand new above-ground tank, shown in background beside the store. The fence in the top photo was still around the work area so when the fence comes down, the pumps are ready.
