Fire department business By Richard Brown Chief There have been lots of changes within Rivers/Daly Fire Department. Last September Dennis Jahns stepped down as our fire chief after years. ennis was very active in the rural fire service starting in irtle bac in the late s. e left irtle to ta e on a job here in ivers and he started with our department and EMS before he even purchased a house! ennis too on the role of training officer then moved up to fire chief in . Dennis trained several members of our community as well as a member of South Central utual id istrict. e than Dennis for all the years and effort put into our community. He is still a member of the fire and emergency medical services in town. n ept. ivers Daly Fire Department members too a vote and was elected to serve as chief. To get full certification it is a requisite to have completed Hazardous Material Operations which is another hour course. ll fire members need a Class driver s licence and air bra es. Currently we have members trained in evel four with evel with ha mat ops with vehicle e trica tion eight with water rescue and

we have si members trained in pump operations. e are also luc y to have nine medically-trained EMR/PCPs in our department who also staff our ambulance. All members have ncident Command and first aid/ CPR. We have two training meeting nights the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. We practise various s ills from firefighting and water rescue to vehicle e trication and snowmobile rescue. We are hoping to run a course for traffic control and a joint course with innedosa for water rescue. Currently we have one member in the full Level 1 course and five will be ta ing an entry level firefighting course starting in pril with three members from hitehead ire epartment. am a certified emergency service instructor and am teaching evel . will also be teaching the entry level firefighter course for the first time in pril. Rivers/Daly Fire Department recently applied for and subse uently received smo e detectors with a 10-year battery life. The fire department will come and install the smo e detector free of charge. Anyone who is in need of smo e detectors for your house please contact ichard rown at or obbie rown at . lease remember that you need a wor ing smo e alarm in every bedroom as well as on every oor in your house. o far in we have re sponded to nine calls including: two motor vehicle collisions one mutual aid with apid City fire three fire alarms two vehicle fires one was a train and one was mutual aid for Rapid City and one structure fire in which we called Whitehead for mutual aid. ast year the department responded to calls including eight fire company alarms seven grass fires five motor vehicle colli sions two hydro incidents five vehicle machine fires and five structure fires. f anyone has any uestions or concerns please feel free to contact me fire Chief ichard rown .
