last winter seemed longer and colder than ever, meaning the prospect of summer is that little bit more exciting this year. with bright blue skies and sunshine on the horizon, there’s no time like the present to get working on that summer wardrobe. kicking things off for womenswear we have trends/pg 06, the edit of the looks that matter at river island this summer, which leads nicely on to celeb style/pg 14 where you’ll find further inspiration for the season ahead. on our radar/pg 20 gives you an insight into what we’re excited about at river island hQ, including noteworthy happenings and launches you’ll want to look out for. styling the season/pg 24 comes courtesy of harper’s Bazaar’s Carmen Borgonovo and 5inchandup blogger sandra hagelstam; both will be sharing their tips to help you make summer a chic affair. next up is block party/pg 26, our key story for summer which showcases the clashing colour brights you need in your wardrobe. And a blast from the past comes via river island’s predecessor, chelsea girl/pg 36 which has been re-launched for 2011. Moving on to menswear we start with to summerise/pg 55, featuring an edit of what you’ll need for holidays, festivals and everything in between. following on from this there’s ways to wear/pg 51, which focuses on our outdoor world trend. our editorial feature into the blue/pg 49 encourages a clean, fresh approach to summer, before blogger 00o00 lets you in on his style tips/pg 43 for finishing off your summer look. speaking of finishing off, we close this issue with a celeb who gets our best dressed/pg 42 vote: tinie tempah. this is summer at river island. dive on in… 03

student shop-ins:

The Fashion Editors of the UK press have seen their fair share of bags, it’s safe to say. With a wealth of bag knowledge under their belts, it would be interesting to see what their perfect bags would look like, right?

Fancy getting 20% off your new summer wardrobe? Of course you do. On the 9th and 10th May, over 40 River Island stores across the UK will be holding Student Shop-Ins, where for one night only students will get 20% off absolutely everything in store.

Enter “Bag me a River”, a range of bags created by Fashion Editors for the River Island summer collection. Catherine Nieto from Grazia, Sinead O’Connell from You and Lynne McKenna from Fabulous all created bags with the help of the in-house River Island design team.

Visit styleinsider.riverisland.com for store locations and further details. Student ID is required to gain entry.

“I wanted to create a bag that was both structured and simple but also fun... that’s where the colour and leopard print came in” said Catherine, who is a self-confessed across-the-body bag addict; Sinead’s bag, the “Frankie” which is named after her beloved dog, was inspired by a school satchel she once had; and Lynne’s bag? “The motivation behind my design was the River Island girl who needs a bag that’s big enough to hold all that she needs.” Its official girls, you’re an inspiring bunch.

“I have been wearing feather necklaces with everything lately. I usually go for rings and bangles but I love the way these look when they blend in with my hair.”

“I spotted the amazing feather maxi at the River Island bloggers event a few months back and knew from that moment that I needed it in my summer wardrobe. A flowy skirt is the perfect eye-catcher, especially when worn during the day time with a simple t-shirt.”

“Cropped palazzo trousers make a good alternative to a calf-length skirt. Try them with a romantic shirt and some clashing chunky boots to tie the look together.”

Chelsea Girl was a high street favourite throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s before evolving into the River Island that you know and love today. Drawing from our fashion heritage, archive favourites have had a design update to form a vintage-inspired collection.

36

Taking its name from the teens who spent their days on London’s uber cool King’s Road in the 60s, Chelsea Girl lead with a fusion between fashion and popular culture to become the UK’s first fashion boutique chain. Fast forward to 2011 and Chelsea Girl is being recreated, bringing more than a hint of nostalgia to this season at River Island. With paisley prints, retro denim and geometric patterns overtly suggesting a bohemian feel, it’s fair to say the new Chelsea Girl collection has more than a hint of 70s influence. Details that are synonymous with styles from the past, such as trouser cuts and the iconic heart logo, add an authenticity to the new range.

PHOTOGRAPHS: NICK HADDOW, HAIR: KEN O’ROURKE AT STREETERS, MAKE-UP: TANIA COURTNEY, MODEL: STACY AT PREMIER

Chelsea Girl is something that’s not only close to the heart of River Island, but also to the original ‘Chelsea girls’ who treasure the memories of shopping at the store in their youth. Paying homage to the original collection and capturing the spirit of the brand with the new range was vital, so now a new generation gets to experience all Chelsea Girl has to offer.

The new Chelsea Girl range was designed by National College of Art & Design graduate, Lucy Moller. Lucy joined the team after winning a design room internship at River Island in 2006 and created the Chelsea Girl pieces with guidance from River Island’s Brand Director, Farida Kaikobad, who worked on original Chelsea Girl designs in the 80s. Lucy and Farida used original Chelsea Girl pieces as the inspiration for the new collection. Find out more about some of their favourites below.

1.

“This red geometric print gypsy top was another great find from my mum’s attic. It’s cropped with balloon sleeves and features one of our signature original Chelsea Girl prints.”

2. 3. “My mum kept a few of her original Chelsea Girl pieces from the 70s which I reproduced for the new collection. I found some ginger suede hotpants with whipstitching up the sides in her attic, which we copied exactly for the range.”

4.

Farida bad o k i a K “Lucy found an original purple print Chelsea Girl dress on eBay, which she reinvented for the new range as a playsuit. The fabric and print is exactly the same as the original dress. It is a great piece circa 1980.”

“I love our super high waisted red cotton flares. Lucy recreated these directly from one of our designs. They are definitely an iconic piece from the collection.”
