E’ una certezza questo poliedrico River Film Festival, che ogni anni riesce a stupire per la varietà e qualità delle sue proposte cinematografiche. In un’epoca nella quale la fruizione della “settima arte” si sposta sempre di più dalla dimensione collettiva della sala cinematografica allo schermo TV di casa, attraverso le nuove piattaforme di distribuzione in rete di contenuti multimediali, ritrovarsi davanti all’iconico schermo galleggiante sul Piovego ci riconcilia con il senso più vero del cinema.

River Film Festival esplora le nuove tendenze, fiuta i mutamenti sociali, portando sullo schermo le opere cinematografiche che meglio le rappresentano. Non poteva mancare una sezione dedicata alla virtual reality, che in un momento nel quale scopriamo anche con qualche brivido gli enormi potenziali dell’intelligenza artificiale, è certamente un campo di enorme interesse. Ma allo stesso tempo possiamo riflettere sulla voce del cinema iraniano, attivo nonostante tutto, così come sull’identità fluida e in continuo cambiamento. Come non potevano mancare, anche queste ulteriori novità, una sezione dedicata alla narrazione delle tematiche ambientali e una dedicata ai diritti umani, in questo momento terribilmente messi in discussione in troppi luoghi del mondo.

Il fil rouge che unisce temi e rappresentazioni cinematografiche così diverse è la curiosità e la voglia di scoperta che ha sempre contraddistinto il River Film Festival, abbinate alla assoluta qualità delle opere scelte. Sono certo che anche quest’anno la risposta del pubblico sarà significativa a conferma del grande successo della manifestazione.

It is a certainty this multifaceted River Film Festival, which every year manages to amaze with the variety and quality of its film proposals. In an era in which the enjoyment of the ‘seventh art’ increasingly shifts from the collective dimension of the movie theatre to the TV screen at home, through the new platforms for the online distribution of multimedia content, finding oneself in front of the iconic screen floating on the Piovego reconnects us with the truest sense of cinema. River Film Festival explores new trends, sniffs out social changes, bringing to the screen the cinematic works that best represent them. It could not miss a section devoted to virtual reality, which at a time when we are also discovering with some trepidation the enormous potential of artificial intelligence, is certainly a field of enormous interest. But at the same time, we can reflect on the voice of Iranian cinema, active despite everything, as well as its fluid and ever-changing identity. Just as these further innovations could not fail to include a section devoted to the narration of environmental issues and one dedicated to human rights, at the moment terribly called into question in too many places in the world. The fil rouge that unites such diverse themes and cinematic representations is the curiosity and desire for discovery that has always distinguished the River Film Festival, combined with the absolute quality of the works chosen. I am certain that this year too the response from the public will be significant, confirming the great success of the event.

Il River Film Festival di Padova giunge alla sua 17° edizione con un ricco e rinnovato palinsesto di eventi e proiezioni dedicati alle nuove tendenze del cortometraggio internazionale: l’ormai iconico schermo galleggiante sulle acque del fiume Piovego proietterà un’accurata selezione di produzioni selezionate attraverso un accurato lavoro di scouting all’interno dell’audiovisivo contemporaneo. Un caleidoscopio di estetiche, scuole e stili, che ben rappresentano la varietà del nuovo panorama cinematografico mondiale, interrogano le più svariate forme di rappresentazione cinematografica in un denso cartellone di appuntamenti fruibili gratuitamente dalla città.

Il concorso si articola in dieci categorie: Virtual Reality, la più coinvolgente ed innovativa tecnologia cinematografica del momento (la sezione VR sarà ospitata all’interno del cinquecentesco Propileo di Porta Venezia); Sguardi italiani, un viaggio nelle nuove tendenze del cinema corto nazionale; Orizzonti internazionali, una miriade di sguardi autoriali intrisi di sensibilità estetica e consapevolezza narrativa capaci di trascinare lo spettatore dentro ed oltre le immagini con un focus speciale sul cinema iraniano; Scuole di cinema, un’attenta selezione di opere prodotte da alcune delle università più rinomate al mondo suddivise in due sotto-sezioni dedicate all’animazione e alla finzione; Animazione, una polifonia di linguaggi e tecniche animate dalla stop-motion all’animazione disegnata, dalla computer grafica al rendering digitale; Queer Shorts, una riflessione sul tema dell’identità queer, intesa come identità fluida in continuo mutamento; Documentari, suggestivi documenti di vita creati attraverso un’esaltante polifonia di poetiche narrative ed estetiche; Cambiamenti Climatici, una nuova sezione volta a promuovere la cultura ambientale e sensibilizzare il pubblico sul tema del cambiamento climatico attraverso la cultura cinematografica; Diritti Umani, un’ulteriore novità che arricchisce il palinsesto del festival con una line-up dedicata ai diritti umani, con particolare attenzione alla tematica dei diritti della donna; Production in Focus, una selezione di cortometraggi prodotti dalle case di produzione francesi Novanima e Miyu che apre le porte del festival al mercato cinematografico. Il festival sarà inaugurato da un evento di grande attrattiva: la presentazione del documentario sulla beat generation “The beat bomb” di Ferdinando Vicentini Orgnani, accompagnato da uno straordinario concerto di Paolo Fresu. Vi aspettiamo numerosi a questa nuova edizione del RiFF, un festival resistente che mette al centro del suo programma la volontà di trasmettere la ricchezza polisemica del fare cinema e l’unicità della settima arte in quanto esperienza culturale e veicolo di conoscenza.

The Padua River Film Festival reaches its 17th edition with a rich and renewed programme of events and screenings dedicated to new trends in international short films: the now iconic screen floating on the waters of the Piovego River will screen a careful selection of productions selected through an accurate scouting process within the contemporary audiovisual scene. A kaleidoscope of aesthetics, schools, and styles, well representing the variety of the new world cinema scene, will interrogate the most varied forms of cinematographic representation in a dense programme of appointments that can be enjoyed free of charge by the city. The competition is divided into ten categories: Virtual Reality, the most engaging and innovative film technology of the moment (the VR section will be hosted inside the 16th century Propileo di Porta Venezia); Italian Gazes, a journey into the new trends of national short films; International Horizons, a myriad of auteur looks imbued with aesthetic sensitivity and narrative awareness capable of drawing the spectator into and beyond the images with a special focus on Iranian cinema; Film Schools, a careful selection of works produced by some of the world’s most renowned universities divided into two sub-sections devoted to animation and fiction; Animation, a polyphony of languages and techniques from stop-motion to drawn animation, from computer graphics to digital rendering; Queer Shorts, a reflection on the theme of queer identity, understood as a fluid identity in continual change; Documentaries, evocative documents of life created through an exhilarating polyphony of narrative and aesthetic poetics; Climate Change, a new section aimed at promoting environmental culture and raising public awareness on the theme of climate change through film culture; Human Rights, a further novelty that enriches the festival schedule with a line-up dedicated to human rights, with a particular focus on the issue of women’s rights; Production in Focus, a selection of short films produced by the French production companies Novanima and Miyu that opens the festival doors to the film market. The festival will be opened by a highly attractive event: the presentation of the documentary on the beat generation “The beat bomb” by Ferdinando Vicentini Orgnani, accompanied by an extraordinary concert by Paolo Fresu. We look forward to seeing you at this new edition of RiFF, a resistant festival that places at the centre of its programme the desire to convey the polysemic richness of filmmaking and the uniqueness of the seventh art as a cultural experience and vehicle of knowledge.

Massimo Casula

Massimo Casula è un ingegnere ed imprenditore. Nel 2013 fonda la Zena Film con la quale produce diversi lavori di finzione, documentario e animazione, con importante collaborazioni nazionali ed internazionali. Nel 2017 il corto sperimentale di animazione “Nausicaa, L’altra Odissea” di Bepi Vigna apre la 32° Settimana Internazionale della Critica al Festival di Venezia, riscuotendo grande successo di critica. Da qualche anno ha portato la Zena Film ad ampliare le sue coproduzioni in altri paesi europei, collaborando con registi e produzioni di fama.

Massimo Casula is an engineer and entrepreneur. In 2013 he founded Zena Film with which he produces several fiction, documentary, and animation works, with important national and international collaborations. In 2017, the experimental animation short “Nausicaa, The Other Odyssey” by Bepi Vigna opened the 32nd International Film Critics’ Week at the Venice Film Festival, gaining great critical acclaim. In recent years, Zena Film has expanded its co-productions to other European countries, collaborating with renowned directors and productions.

Alessandra Cattoi

Alessandra Cattoi è la direttrice della Fondazione Museo Civico di Rovereto e del RAM Film Festival di Rovereto. Per molti anni si è occupata di comunicazione e di divulgazione scientifica nel campo della medicina e delle biotecnologie, collaborando con l’agenzia giornalistica Ansa, il quotidiano il Sole 24 Ore e il settimanale l’Espresso. Porta con sé anche un ampio bagaglio di competenze a livello istituzionale, avendo lavorato per sette anni al Senato della Repubblica e, successivamente, avendo ricoperto il ruolo di assessora nella giunta comunale di Roma, un’esperienza che le ha permesso di consolidare le sue capacità gestionali e amministrative. Tra le numerose deleghe assegnatele vanno ricordate quelle ai Servizi scolastici, alle Politiche Comunitarie e ai Grandi eventi.

Alessandra Cattoi is the director of the Civic Museum Foundation of Rovereto and of the RAM Film Festival of Rovereto. For many years she has been involved in scientific communication and dissemination in the fields of medicine and biotechnology, collaborating with the news agency Ansa, the daily newspaper il Sole 24 Ore and the weekly magazine l’Espresso. She also brings with her a wide range of skills at an institutional level, having worked for seven years in the Senate of the Italian Republic and, subsequently, having held the role of councilor in the municipal council of Rome, an experience that has allowed her to consolidate her managerial and administrative skills. Among the numerous powers assigned to her, we should mention those for school services, community policies and major events.

Laura Cavanna

Laura Cavanna è un architetto italiano con una grossa passione per l’arte. Attualmente vive a Hong Kong dove, oltre ad avere uno studio di design, lavora come docente di arte e design per l’Universita’ HSUHK. Ha lavorato in molti paesi per vari tipi di agenzie e istituti, imparando ad apprezzare e adattarsi a diverse estetiche, preferenze e culture. Attraverso il suo lavoro ha avuto l’opportunità di lavorare con colleghi internazionali, ha gestito e creato team promuovendo innovazione e pensiero creativo. Attraverso l’esperienza che ha maturato nel suo percorso professionale, è arrivata a comprendere il ruolo fondamentale dell’istruzione e ha acquisito una significativa esperienza nell’insegnamento di arte e design.

Laura Cavanna is an Italian architect with a strong focus for art. She is currently based in Hong Kong, and she has worked in many countries for various types of agencies and institutes, learning to appreciate and adapt to different aesthetics, preferences, and cultures. With each role she has also had the unique opportunity to work with other colleagues and have built and led teams where she drove innovation and creative thinking. Through the experience that she has gained in her career path, she has come to understand the fundamental role of education.

Laura Cesaro

Laura Cesaro è assegnista di ricerca presso l’Università degli Studi di Padova, dove insegna Teorie e tecniche delle comunicazioni di massa. I suoi interessi di ricerca riguardano gli studi sui festival cinematografici e il rapporto tra cinema e territorio. La sua indagine si concentra sulle prospettive visive legate alla mappatura del territorio, compresa la progettazione di modelli didattici ed educativi. È autrice di Geografie del controllo nella scena audiovisiva contemporanea (Bulzoni, 2022).

Laura Cesaro is a research fellow at the University of Padua, where she teaches Theories and techniques of mass communications. Her research interests concern studies on film festivals and the relationship between cinema and landscapes. Her investigation focuses on the visual perspectives related to the mapping of the landscape, including the design of teaching and educational models. She is the author of the book “Geographies of control in the contemporary audiovisual scene” (Bulzoni, 2022).

Marco Gatti

Laureato in Scienze della Comunicazione, autore di cortometraggi e video. Lavora tra Torino e Roma come assistente alla regia e montatore fino al 2010 per dedicarsi poi alla regia e all’organizzazione di eventi culturali. Dal 2014 collabora con l’Ufficio culturale dell’Ambasciata d’Italia a Bangkok. Direttore artistico di quattro edizioni dell’Italian Film Festival Bangkok e autore di campagne di comunicazione video per la Camera di Commercio italo-thailandese.

A graduate of Communication Sciences, Marco Gatti from Turin has been working as a video assistant, editor and assistant director in film and television productions since 2000. He has directed short fiction and institutional films with a social theme. His intent is anthropological research, the exploration of the imaginary and the discovery of traditional symbolism through the use of audiovisuals.

Nicola Mennuni

Nicola Mennuni è creativo, innovativo e appassionato nello svolgere il suo lavoro. Ha forti competenze di vendita, sviluppo del business, marketing, comunicazione e gestione delle persone grazie alla sua lunga esperienza in IBM. Nel 2016 ha lasciato IBM per iniziare l’attività di produttore cinematografico dove sta crescendo molto velocemente. Oltre a produrre con Nical Films e Hypatia Pictures, ha avviato co-produzioni sia nazionali che internazionali. Sta diventando punto di riferimento in Sardegna per le produzioni estere.

Nicola Mennuni is creative, innovative and passionate about doing his job. He has strong skills in sales, business development, marketing, communication and people management from his long experience at IBM. In 2016 he left IBM to start as a film producer where he is growing very fast. In addition to producing with Nical Films and Hypatia Pictures, he has started both national and international co-productions. He is becoming a reference point in Sardinia for foreign productions.

Alessandra Usai

Nata a Cagliari, ricercatrice, regista e documentarista. Laurea in Lettere e Filosofia con indirizzo specialistico in storia e critica del cinema. Dopo il laboratorio di critica cinematografica tenuto dal critico Morando Morandini, frequenta il corso specialistico di documentario presso la scuola civica di cinema di Milano. Nelle sue produzioni indipendenti ha sinora privilegiato contenuti di giustizia sociale e di uso sostenibile delle risorse.

Born in Cagliari, Italy, researcher, director, and documentary filmmaker. Degree in Literature and Philosophy with specialisation in film history and criticism. After the film criticism workshop held by film critic Morando Morandini, she attended the specialist documentary course at the Civic Film School in Milan. In her independent productions, he has so far favoured social justice and sustainable use of resources.

Paolo Fresu

Winner of a wide array of awards, professor, and director of various Italian and international institutions, Paolo Fresu has performed around the world with the most important names of Afro-American music over the past 30 years. He has participated in over 350 recordings, some as a leader, others as a sideman, and still other projects mixing ethnic, jazz, world music, contemporary, and ancient music. His unique trumpet sound is recognized as one of the most distinctive in the contemporary jazz scene.

Un documentario nato dall’incontro, avvenuto nel 2007, tra il regista con il poeta statunitense Lawrence Ferlinghetti, deceduto nel 2021. L’amicizia diventa una collaborazione tra Roma e San Francisco. Ferlinghetti è noto per essere stato l’editore della Beat Generation, nonché un catalizzatore capace di ideare e portare avanti con fermezza un progetto politico-culturale rigoroso. Il documentario è l’eredità della sua voce, quella della bomba Beat che si opponeva a “the military industrial complex”. In una delle sue poesie Ferlinghetti auspica che il potere delle parole dei poeti possa rispondere alle sfide di questi tempi così apocalittici.

It is a documentary born from a meeting in 2007 between the director and the American poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who died in 2021. The friendship became a collaboration between Rome and San Francisco. Ferlinghetti is known to have been the editor of the Beat Generation, as well as a catalyst capable of conceiving and firmly pursuing a rigorous political-cultural project. The documentary is the legacy of his voice, that of the Beat bombshell opposing “the military industrial complex”. In one of his poems, Ferlinghetti hopes that the power of poets’ words can respond to the challenges of these apocalyptic times.

His graduation short film at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia represented Italy at the Students Oscar and received several recognitions. His main efforts as writer-director: Mare Largofiction - 1998 / Ilaria Alpi - Il più crudele dei giorni - fiction - 2003 / 68’ - L’utopia della realtà - doc - 2008 / Zulu meets Jazz - doc - 2009 / Un minuto de silencio - doc - 2013 / Vinodentro - fiction - 2014. Co-writer of Children‘s Story Fassbinder Prize European Oscar 2004. He produced several films and documentaries, including Viva Zapatero (Venice Film Festival 2005) winner Nastro D’argento and Draquila – l’Italia che trema 2010.

Ferruccio Brugnaro

Since the early 1950s, he has been a worker in Porto Marghera. His activity as a writer began in 1965 when he distributed mimeographs of poetry, stories and thoughts in the neighbourhoods and schools frequented by workers in struggle. Part of his civil commitment is archived at the Marghera Local History Documentation Centre. A poet of the Beat Generation, his publications are translated into many languages. Some of his poems can be found in the Orgosolo murals.

Il River Film Festival riconferma la sua attenzione nei confronti della virtual reality con una selezione di opere capaci di condurre lo spettatore in un viaggio al confine tra realtà virtuale e virtualità reale. Diversi ed attuali i temi affrontati nelle opere in concorso: i conflitti sociali che minacciano la democrazia, l’emergenza climatica, la disabilità, la violenza sui minori. La sezione VR sarà ospitata all’interno del cinquecentesco Propileo di Porta Venezia, sito di interesse storico-artistico che rappresenta il simbolo identitario del quartiere Portello.

The River Film Festival reconfirms its focus on virtual reality with a selection of works capable of taking the spectator on a journey on the borderline between virtual reality and real virtuality. Various and topical themes are addressed in the works in competition: social conflicts that threaten democracy, the climate emergency, disability, and violence against minors. The VR section will be hosted inside the 16th-century Propileo di Porta Venezia, a site of historical and artistic interest that represents the Portello district’s identity symbol.

HUMANINSPIREDTECHNOLOGY ResearchCentre

Lo Human Inspired Technologies Research Centre (HIT) è stato fondato nel 2013 presso l’Università degli Studi di Padova. HIT lavora in una prospettiva «user-centric» nella ricerca e nel design-sviluppo-valutazione delle nuove tecnologie, combinando in una logica interdisciplinare le conoscenze sulle persone (neuroscienze cognitive, scienze psicologiche e sociali, fisiologia...) le loro espressioni (design, arte e cultura, architettura...), e le loro regole (diritto, scienze politiche...) con le competenze tecniche e scientifiche sulle tecnologie (computer science, ingegneria elettronica e informatica, bioingegneria...).

I membri del centro HIT hanno fondato e supportano la Scuola di Dottorato «Brain, Mind and Computer Science - BMCS» e sono impegnati in numerosi progetti di ricerca e sviluppo internazionali, nazionali e regionali collaborando con alcune delle più importanti accademie e imprese nel mondo. Oltre alla sede storica in via Luzzatti 4 - nel cuore della zona universitaria - e la sede amministrativa in via Venezia 8 (presso il Dipartimento di Psicologia Generale), HIT ha aperto nel 2019 una nuova sede nella Zona Industriale di Padova, in Galleria Spagna 35, nell’intenzione di avvicinarsi alle imprese della zona e collaborare con loro allo sviluppo tecnico ed economico del territorio.

The Human inspired Technologies Research Centre (HIT) was founded in 2013 at the University of Padua. In questa installazione interattiva il visitatore naviga attraverso la loro storia facendo delle scelte nel disegno della trama: resteranno insieme o si allontaneranno?

A man and a woman deal differently with their childhood events when they engage in a relationship with each other. In this interactive installation the visitor navigates through their story by making choices: will they stay together, or will they drift apart? It’s up to the visitor.

Animator and VR director at Studio APVIS. He started as a 2d animator and expanded these skills with 3d animation, large scale video mapping projects and augmented reality artworks. Since 2014 he has been creating a diverse range of experiences for this new virtual world.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was established in 1875 after the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals legally intervened on behalf of a child named Mary Ellen Wilson, severely abused by her guardians. The story of the first child protection case in USA.

Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology, where she teaches interdisciplinary courses that explore the intersections of the arts, technology, and music. She holds a BFA in Photography from Art Center College of Design and an MFA in Digital Arts from University of California.

Laila, a hearing-impaired university student, will guide the viewer into a slice of her life, sharing the practical and emotional difficulties linked to her condition through a path of enhancement of sound, meant in all its forms, and through the meeting with Fabio, university fellow-student.

Two guys, 26 and 25 years old, from Avellino and Florence. They met at the Turin Polytechnic, attending the Cinema and Media Engineering courses.

In 2020 a group of Kiriri indigenous people in north eastern Brazil opened a cassava production facility with support from the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). It was an important step in their journey to reclaim their lands and rebuild their traditional way of life.

The second section of the competition outlines a pathway into the new trends of Italian short films, constituting an opportunity for visibility for national works of high artistic quality that are often excluded from the main channels of film distribution. With this focus, the River Film Festival aims to create a bridge between the public and the expressive possibilities of contemporary Italian short films capable of offering a polyphony of narratives and stylistic approaches of great vitality in the proposed program schedule.

In una Napoli noir, una ragazza orientale lavora come cameriera in un ristorante giapponese, vestita e truccata da Geisha, per un proprietario misterioso. Le loro vite sono legate da un origami gru e da una leggenda, secondo cui al completamento del millesimo origami un desiderio può diventare realtà: il desiderio di libertà tanto anelato dalla giovane ragazza.

In a Naples with a noir atmosphere, an oriental girl works as a waitress in a Japanese restaurant, dressed and made up as a Geisha, for a mysterious owner. Their lives are linked by an origami crane and a legend, according to which upon completion of the thousandth origami a wish can become reality: the young girl’s longing for freedom.

Director and photographer. In 2020 he made his first short film “L’ultimo giorno d’estate”. In 2022 he founded the Nuovo Tango group engaged in cinema, theater and photography.

Born in 1986, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Napels, in the Cinema-Photography and Television course. In 2018 he enters the documentary course FILMAP - Atelier di cinema del reale. He is currently a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples.

Carlo is a boy from Taranto, who is seriously ill. He is very passionate about Jesus. Ugo is in his forties, atheist, and communist, and with economic problems, he decides to take part in a mysterious casting. That’s how Ugo, plays the role of the biggest superhero of all time: Super Jesus.

Miya is an artist who reassembles ceramics with the old Japanese technique of Kintsugi, fixing the shards with fine gold as “a metaphor for struggles of existence, which make people and better, while they overcome suffering”. Miya and her husband, Jin, move to Italy; guests in one house built next to an old abandoned mill. At night, they are awakened by a loud splash of water.

Un denso tessuto di narrazioni interroga le forme di rappresentazione dei generi dramma, commedia, thriller e fantascienza, che si fondono in un programma di quattro giornate arricchito da un focus sul cinema iraniano dal titolo “Woman, Life, Freedom”.

INTERNATIONAL HORIZONS

Through a kaleidoscope of languages and authorial approaches that well represent the expressive richness of contemporary short films, the “short” universe that RiFF proposes in this section brings together twenty-six works from numerous countries around the world. A dense fabric of narratives interrogates the forms of representation of the drama, comedy, thriller, and science fiction genres, which come together in a four-day program enriched by a focus on Iranian cinema entitled “Woman, Life, Freedom”.

Fariba Karimi was born in Tabriz-Iran (1981). He has been living and working in Rome since 2009. She trained at the Tehran Art High School and graduated in Painting in 2006 from the University of Art in Tehran. He graduated in Painting in 2014 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Since 2003, she has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions and various art events in Iran, Italy and abroad.

Daniil, insegnante georgiano, parte dalla sua famiglia per quello che dovrebbe essere solo un lavoro stagionale a Praga. Trova lavoro presso i braccianti ucraini controllati da un boss russo, Sergei, e diventa un ingranaggio della macchina che sfrutta gli immigrati clandestini. Il ritorno a casa di Daniil diventa incerto, mentre viene spinto nella nuova e strana realtà dell’Occidente.

Daniil, Georgian teacher, departs from his family for what should be only a seasonal job in Prague. He finds a job with Ukrainian laborers controlled by a Russian boss Sergei and becomes a cog in the machinery that takes advantage of illegal immigrants. Daniil‘s return home becomes uncertain, as he‘s driven into the strange new reality in the West.

Martin is currently developing his debut feature film ‘Three Weeks Under the Sea’, which has been part of TorinoFilmLab development programme. Short films ‘The Celebration’, ‘The Lion, the Antelope and the Beautiful Blonde’ have been screened internationally, including 40th Montreal World Film Festival and 32nd WFF Warsaw.

After studying graphic design and working at Greenpeace, she decided to study animation at the Film and TV School of The Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU). She graduated with Carp Xmass as her final project.

Il linguaggio animato ha sempre avuto uno spazio privilegiato all’interno della programmazione del River Film Festival e questa 17° edizione conferma l’attenzione verso tale genere filmico. Alternando stop-motion ad animazione disegnata, a computer grafica e rendering digitale, la selezione proposta costruisce un mosaico di narrazioni e linguaggi visuali che spesso non si offrono come approdi di senso immediato, ma attivano un concatenamento di suggestioni capace di aprire momenti di lirica sospensione nel tessuto visivo e lasciare negli occhi dello spettatore echi sottili di significati.

ANIMATION

Animated language has always had a privileged space within the River Film Festival’s programming and this 17th edition confirms the attention paid to this filmic genre. Alternating between stop-motion and drawn animation, computer graphics and digital rendering, the proposed selection builds a mosaic of narratives and visual languages that often do not offer themselves as landing places of immediate meaning, but activate a chain of suggestions capable of opening moments of lyrical suspension in the visual fabric and leaving subtle echoes of meanings in the spectator’s eyes.

In the land occupied with the sprayers army, no one has the right to grow any kind of plants. So many of the people do not even know how dose a plant grows or look like, until one day one of the soldiers finds a seed buried deep down in the dust and his curiosity is just the beginning of something revolutionary.

She has animated on Prince Ki-Ki-do, Weasel, Špela Čadež’s OITNB Netflix commission and Somewhere Else. She is the co-creator of two site-specific projects selected for Animafest Animation goes MSU and cofounder of OCTOPICS production studio. The Legend of Goldhorn is her debut shortfilm.

We are in the middle of August, in an apartment on the Roman outskirts. Tommaso is a teenager and he is subjected to the spite of his elder brother Leonardo, who calls him “Pelorosso” because of his auburn hair. If he wants his brother to stop teasing him, Tommaso will have to cut himself hair.

He was born in Milan, in 1997. His debut short film “August in Fur” won the Best Director award at Visioni Italiane 2022. He is the president of DestinationFilm, with which he produces and directs short films and music videos.

In 1860, Walt Whitman published the poem ‘Once I Passed Through a Populous City’, an account of a romantic relationship with an unknown woman. In 1925, the original handwritten copy of the poem was discovered, in which Whitman writes about an affair with a man in an anonymous city, which may have been his first physical experience of love.

Balanced between documentary reality and filmic fiction, the selected works are driven by an authorial logic that creates evocative documents of life through an exhilarating polyphony of gazes that become a poetic feeling, the possible way to investigate and narrate the possible declinations of delicate social issues, such as gender identity, immigration, the condition of women, and climate change. Once upon a time, Sudan promised to be one of the most successful African states. However, after 20 years of civil war, more than 2 million deaths, and 5 million refugees, Sudan was torn apart by foreign peace brokers into two Sudans. Since 2011, a new border line marks the birth of the newly independent Republic of South Sudan. But freedom fighters and their families in the Nuba mountains and Blue Nile, found themselves stranded on the north side of the border, and at the mercy of their traditional enemies. Rotting 2022 is the story of one of the worst consequences of the 2005 “Death by Peace” Comprehensive Peace Agreement. This is a documentary film about leprosy. It is not only about the rotting flesh of the lepers living on the top of the highest Nuba mountains but also the rotting of ethical values at the heart of Europe and the whole world. Rotting 2022 is an appeal to our common humanity: we implore the World Health Organisation to fulfill their mission, and to help these people immediately!

Tomo Križnar è un attivista per la pace, noto per aver fornito videocamere nel Kordofan meridionale ai civili di etnia nuba per aiutarli a raccogliere le prove dei crimini di guerra commessi dall’esercito del Nord Sudan contro di loro. Ha scritto diversi libri. E’ stato inviato speciale dell’allora presidente sloveno Janez Drnovšek per il Darfur.

Tomo Križnar is a peace activist, known for providing video cameras in South Kordofan to ethnic Nuba civilians to help them collect evidence of war crimes committed by the North Sudanese army against them. He has written several books. He was a special envoy of then Slovenian President Janez Drnovšek for Darfur.

Since she was a child, Vale has always been pugnacious, up to when she had to fight for the right to assisted suicide for her life long partner, who became blind and quadriplegic after a car accident. Now, as she approaches the ring for her last boxing match, all of her fights blur into one another.

Teresa Sala is a filmmaker. She mainly deals with documentaries, but also explores commercials, videodance, videoperformance.

Stefano Zoja is a filmmaker and journalist. He directed or contributed to many independent documentaries, selected internationally.

La proiezione dei corti in concorso sarà aperta da due eventi speciali: una tavola rotonda presso l’Orto Botanico di Padova dove rinomati esperti del settore condurranno il pubblico verso riflessioni sul delicato equilibrio tra uomo e ambiente e sul rapporto tra clima e comportamenti sociali; la proiezione del lungometraggio “Dar Fur – War for water” del regista sloveno e attivista per i diritti umani Tomo Križnar.

In 2023 RiFF presents a new thematic window dedicated to the issue of climate change with the aim of promoting environmental culture through cinema. The screening of the short films in competition will be opened by two special events: a round table at the Botanical Garden of Padua where renowned experts in the field will lead the audience towards reflections on the delicate balance between man and the environment and on the relationship between climate and social behaviour; the screening of the feature film ‘Dar Fur - War for water’ by Slovenian director and human rights activist Tomo Križnar.

Nell’animazione giapponese, la rappresentazione della fede shintoista e la rappresentazione della natura sono spesso intrecciate. Questo può essere visto nel modo in cui gli elementi naturali siano usati come simboli nelle cerimonie shintoiste e come i personaggi spesso interagiscono con la natura per ottenere potere spirituale o purificarsi. Questa rappresentazione della natura come essere vivente senziente e pullulante di spiriti è un tema comune non solo negli anime ma anche in altre espressioni dell’arte contemporanea giapponese. La presentazione illustrerà sia l’ethos ecologico di acclamati registi cinematografici come Hayao Miyazaki e Makoto Shinkai, ma anche di Media Artist contemporanei indipendenti quali Masaru Tabei, Hisako Kroiden Yamakawa e Takahiro Hayakawa.

Japanese Media Art - the ecological ethos of Japanese authors contemporary Japanese authors. In Japanese animation, the representation of the Shinto faith and the representation of nature are often intertwined. This can be seen in the way natural elements are used as symbols in Shinto ceremonies and how characters often interact with nature to gain spiritual power or purify themselves. This representation of nature as a sentient living being teeming with spirits is a common theme not only in anime but also in other expressions of contemporary Japanese art. The presentation will illustrate both the ecological ethos of acclaimed film directors such as Hayao Miyazaki and Makoto Shinkai, but also of contemporary independent media artists such as Masaru Tabei, Hisako Kroiden Yamakawa, and Takahiro Hayakawa.

Mauro Arrighi is an Italian Media Artist who currently teaches at Hang Seng University in Hong Kong. From 2001 to 2017, Arrighi taught at the Academies of Fine Arts in Venice, Bologna and Verona. He has also performed and exhibited at, among other venues, the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, the International Biennials of Art and Architecture in Venice, the New Media Fest in Cologne, the Video and New Media Art Festival in Ljubljana and the Netherlands Media Art Institute.

The report discusses the main critical issues and provides some indications of how innovative ideas and projects such as “Glocalism” and “Social Ecology” attempt to propose possible alternative solutions.

Martino Seniga, giornalista esperto di politica internazionale e sostenibilità ambientale, ha lavorato come inviato e caporedattore per la Rai ed Euronews. Autore e ideatore di numerosi programmi e format televisivi ha realizzato reportage su tematiche ambientali nelle principali aree geopolitiche del mondo.

Martino Seniga, a journalist expert in international politics and environmental sustainability, has worked as correspondent and editor-in-chief for RAI and Euronews. L’utilizzo dello Spazio, iniziato con il lancio del primo satellite artificiale Sputnik-1 nel 1957, ha subito negli ultimi 65 anni una crescita enorme. Con l’incremento di lanci spaziali, di satelliti artificiali messi in orbita attorno alla Terra e di detriti spaziali sempre più numerosi si aumenta anche la preoccupazione relativa alle conseguenze dei rischi legati all’impossibilità attuale di interrompere lo sfruttamento di servizi satellitari o di tenere la situazione sotto controllo.

Sergei Schmalz, 45 anni, è un astronomo russo naturalizzato tedesco, originario di Krasnojarsk. Dal 2017 lavora all’osservatorio astronomico di Castelgrande (Pz), dove è responsabile della Stazione dei Detriti Spaziali, gestita dall’azienda di ingegneria aerospaziale GAUSS Srl di Roma e dall’Istituto Keldysh di Matematica Applicata di Mosca. In precedenza ha lavorato all’Istituto di Astrofisica di Potsdam. Nel giugno 2022 ha ricevuto la cittadinanza onoraria del Comune di Castelgrande.

Sergei Schmalz, 45, is a naturalised German Russian astronomer from Krasnoyarsk. Since 2017, he has been working at the Castelgrande Astronomical Observatory (Pz), where he is in charge of the Space Debris Station, operated by the aerospace engineering company GAUSS Srl in Rome and the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics in Moscow. He previously worked at the Institute of Astrophysics in Potsdam. In June 2022, he received honorary citizenship of the Municipality of Castelgrande.

Ora attivo nel Comitato Acqua Bene Comune di Padova e nel Comitato No Quarta Linea Inceneritore di Padova.

Gianni Sbrogiò, a former metalworker in Porto Marghera in the 1960s and 1970s, then worked in an organic certification body. The changing climate: effects on environmental matrices. How to oppose it? The rapidly changing climate overwhelms the natural biorhythms of living beings already penalised by increased pollution in all environmental matrices. Marina Lecis will assess the impacts on ecosystems unfortunately tampered with and sometimes even destroyed by human intervention in response to selfish economic and political interests. She will present some emergency cases on which she is working in synergy with lawyer Destro, committees, and other figures in the area because unity has always made a difference.

Ufficialmente la guerra nel Darfur inizia nel 2003. Tuttavia, la ribellione del Darfur al governo centrale del Sudan risale all’inizio della sua indipendenza dall’impero Britannico, nel 1956. I cambiamenti climatici stanno mettendo a serio rischio le coltivazioni nel Sahel, compromettendo le possibilità di sopravvivenza. Si calcola che i 50 milioni di africani che vivono nel Sahel si preparano ad emigrare in Europa. L’Europa non è preparata a questa evenienza.

Officially, the war in Darfur began in 2003. However, Darfur’s rebellion against Sudan’s central government dates back to the beginning of its independence from the British Empire in 1956. The clash between indigenous Africans and migrant Arab tribes over access to water - which has become increasingly rare due to climate change - began in 1980. The government of Sudan arms the nomadic Arab tribes to conduct ethnic cleansing in Darfur. The Janjaweed (Devils on horseback), assault, loot, burn, kill and kidnap in their constant raids on African villages... It is in our days the news of the arrest warrant, issued by the International Court in The Hague, against Omar Al Bashir, the president of Sudan, for war crimes in Darfur. Climate change is seriously threatening crops in the Sahel, jeopardising their chances of survival. It is estimated that the 50 million Africans living in the Sahel are preparing to migrate to Europe - which is not prepared for this.

Nel febbraio 2006 è diventato emissario speciale dell’ex presidente sloveno Janez Drnovsek nella provincia sudanese occidentale del Darfur. Nel 2008 il documentario “Dar Fur - War for Water” è stato il primo film sul Darfur che ha permesso al resto del mondo di farsi un’idea della mentalità dei ribelli in Darfur e degli eventi che hanno avuto luogo da febbraio a giugno 2006. Il suo documentario rivela che la guerra in Darfur è soprattutto - a causa dei cambiamenti climatici - una guerra per l’acqua.

She studied art and design at Estienne, La Sorbonne, and Jean Jaurès University. She received a Masters in Animation Creation and Development from the Institut Supérieur Couleur, Image, Design (ISCID.)

Nel 1983 fu arrestato l’ex capo della Gestapo, Klaus Barbie. Robert Badinter racconta il sentimento ambivalente che provò quando si rese conto che, abolendo la pena di morte due anni prima, aveva salvato la vita dell’uomo responsabile della deportazione di suo padre nel campo di sterminio di Sobibor. In 1983 the former head of the Gestapo, Klaus Barbie, was arrested. Robert Badinter recounts the ambivalent feeling he had when he realised that, by abolishing the death penalty two years earlier, he had saved the life of the man responsible for his father’s deportation to the Sobibor death camp.

Miyu Productions è una società di produzione audiovisiva fondata da Emmanuel-Alain Raynal nel 2009, specializzata in animazione che produce cortometraggi, lungometraggi e serie. Dal 2015 è co-diretta da Emmanuel-Alain Raynal e Pierre Baussaron. La società attualmente sviluppa e produce un portafoglio di circa quindici lungometraggi, unità televisive e serie e venti cortometraggi. Tra i lungometraggi, Willows Blind, Sleeping Woman, di Pierre Földes, adattato da diversi racconti di Haruki Murakami, è stato ultimato nella primavera del 2022.

Miyu Productions is an audiovisual production company founded by Emmanuel-Alain Raynal in 2009, specializing in animation which produces short films, feature films and series. Since 2015, it has been co-directed by Emmanuel-Alain Raynal and Pierre Baussaron. The company currently develops and produces a portfolio of approximately fifteen feature films, TV units and series, and twenty short films. Among the feature films, Willows Blind, Sleeping Woman, by Pierre Földes, adapted from several short stories by Haruki Murakami, has been finalized in spring 2022.

It is an animation close to the noir series of cinema, that pays tribute to Akira, A Clockwork Orange, or the Hotline Miami, from the use of the motorcycle as a means of transport for the protagonist to the biological manipulation to create assassins in laboratory, they are general references accompanied by numerous details.

Vivid colors, bold shading, and detailed linework are unmistakable key features of their works. Digital or analogue, there is something psychedelic and mystifying about every piece; distorting and mystifying foreign realities as characters expand and contract accordingly.

Per creare l’immagine per la musica di Pink Noise, il trio di registi offre un’interpretazione simbolica e poetica della vita che cresce nel grembo di una futura madre. Usano una tecnica innovativa chiamata “trasferimento neurale”, che strutta l’intelligenza artificiale per creare nuove immagini.

To create the image for the music of Pink Noise, the trio of directors delivers a symbolic and poetic interpretation of the life that grows in the womb of a future mother. They use an innovative technique called “neural transfer”, which uses artificial intelligence to create new images.

Their experiences led them to produce video loops and clips for the musicians of the Parisian electronic scene, and gradually they wanted to work on less “decorative” formats and start to make films, and write scenarios.

Artist and illustrator. She usually prefers smaller formats, and her drawings are made with a clear line style and no coloring. She also makes digitally colored engravings and watercolor illustrations. She creates children’s book as well as books for adults and fanzines.

If your girlfriend would tell you “My period hasn’t come yet,” or if your period hasn’t come, how would you feel and how would you behave? A handful of people, of different ages, boys and girls, react to those questions letting us discover their relationship to sex, parenthood, life, and society.

Japanese animator based in Tokyo. She graduated with a Bachelor of Graphic Design from Tama Art University. She is known for her distinct directorial personality in hand-drawn animation, with a very original artistic direction.

Un sopravvissuto all’Olocausto scrive, dopo la guerra, una lettera di ringraziamento a un maiale che gli ha salvato la vita. Dopo la sua testimonianza in classe, una giovane studentessa sogna una versione tragica della sua storia. Al di là della sua visione personale, il film esplora anche i temi del trauma collettivo, della vendetta, del male e della compassione.

A Holocaust survivor writes, after the war, a thank-you letter to a pig that saved his life. After his testimony in a classroom, a young student dreams a tragic version of his story. Beyond her vision, the film also explores the themes of collective trauma, vengeance, human evil, and compassion.

Independent animation filmmaker & visual artist. Graduated with honors from the ‘Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem’, ‘where she currently lectures at the Screen-Based Arts Department. In her animated works,Tal uses a unique technique she has developed, which combines drawing, photography, video, painting, and animation.

On foot (20 min): Continue along Via Nicolò Tommaseo and Via Venezia until Porta Portello. By Bus (10 min): Take line 10 and get off at the stop Tommaseo 114 (ang. via Venezia) and continue towards Via Venezia until Porta Portello.
