Con l’estate tornano i molti appuntamenti culturali che animano le serate della nostra città con proposte diverse ma sempre di indubbio interesse. Tra gli appuntamenti irrinunciabili si segnala il River Film Festival, attivo da oltre un decennio, che anche grazie alle sue aperture internazionali ha costruito nel tempo uno spazio di incontro importante per la qualità del suo programma, e per il confronto di idee, storie, esperienze. Non poco aggiunge lo scenario unico della scalinata cinquecentesca di Porta Portello, dove la manifestazione si svolge. Anche a questa nuova edizione va l’augurio di una numerosa, attenta partecipazione del pubblico.

With the summer, the many cultural events that enliven the evenings of our city return with different but always interesting proposals. Among the unmissable events is the River Film Festival, active for over a decade, which also thanks to its international openings has built over time an important meeting space for the quality of its program, and for the comparison of ideas, stories, experiences. The unique setting of the sixteenth-century Porta Portello staircase, where the event takes place, adds a suggestive charm. We also hope for large, attentive public participation in this new edition.

For eighteen years the RiFF has welcomed artists from every corner of the world, who with their imagination interpret the world of yesterday, today and tomorrow, in one of the most evocative places of our city, a crossroads of exchanges and knowledge. Upon returning to their countries of origin they bring with them an experience lived in a city of art - the painted city, a UNESCO site due to the extent and importance of its frescoes - whose beauty should be a monitor against the barbarism of destruction that passes through our time. We hope that watching a film, listening to a poem, and the notes of music can contribute to the knowledge and respect of cultures and peoples who have the sacrosanct right to live in PEACE!

Come ogni anno, ritorna il River International Film Festival di Padova dedicato al cinema corto indipendente internazionale. Nella suggestiva cornice di Porta Portello, sul nostro schermo galleggiante ancorato alle acque del fiume Piovego, proiettiamo un’accurata selezione di opere realizzate dai nuovi talenti del panorama audiovisivo contemporaneo, con particolare attenzione alle cinematografie emergenti e alle tematiche di carattere socio-ambientale. Il caleidoscopio di estetiche, scuole e stili che caratterizza la nostra programmazione rispecchia i valori fondamentali del festival: creatività, libertà, dialogo, inclusione e internazionalismo. Il palinsesto del 2024 si articola in due macro-sezioni: gli eventi speciali di apertura e la competizione ufficiale.

Gli eventi speciali di apertura sono molteplici e dettano i tracciati di nuove reti partenariali: la serata di apertura realizzata in collaborazione con Medici Senza Frontiere; l’evento Volonté30, che celebra il trentennale della morte del grande attore Gian Maria Volonté; il focus dedicato ai documentari prodotti dagli studenti del DAMS dell’Università di Padova; la prima edizione di Il RiFF incontra i festival veneti, un format volto a dare spazio ai programmi dei festival regionali dedicati al cinema corto; tre talk realizzati in collaborazione con la Biblioteca Civica della città.

La selezione in concorso ospita otto categorie premiate con i Golden River Awards da una prestigiosa giuria internazionale: Sguardi italiani, un viaggio nelle nuove tendenze del cinema corto nazionale; Orizzonti internazionali, un programma che traccia nuove rotte nelle geografie audiovisive dei vari continenti; Scuole di cinema, un’attenta scelta di opere prodotte da alcune delle università più prestigiose al mondo; Animazione, una polifonia di linguaggi e tecniche animate dalla stop-motion all’animazione disegnata, dalla computer grafica al rendering digitale; Queer Shorts, una riflessione sul tema dell’identità queer, intesa come identità fluida in continuo mutamento; Documentari, suggestivi documenti di vita creati attraverso un’esaltante polifonia di poetiche narrative ed estetiche; Antropocene (clima e diritti umani), una sezione volta a promuovere la cultura socio-ambientale attraverso la cultura cinematografica; Theme in focus, una sezione che pone di anno in anno l’attenzione su un tema diverso ispirato ad eventi e celebrazioni particolari. Al giudizio del pubblico sono affidate le sezioni VR Experience e World in focus: Palestina, un affondo tematico più che mai urgente realizzato in collaborazione con NAZRA – Palestine Short Film Festival. Auspico che questo nuovo mandato artistico possa concorrere a trasformare il RiFF in un laboratorio di grande vitalità proiettato verso il futuro dell’immagine in movimento

As every year, the River International Film celebrates the international independent short cinema. In the suggestive location of Porta Portello, on our floating screen anchored to the waters of the Piovego River, we project a careful selection of works created by new talents on the contemporary audiovisual scene, with particular attention to emerging cinematography and socio-environmental themes. The kaleidoscope of aesthetics, schools and styles that characterises our programming reflects the fundamental values of the festival: creativity, freedom, dialogue, inclusion and internationalism. The 2024 schedule is divided into two macro-sections: the special opening events and the official competition.

The opening special events are numerous and dictate the paths of new partnership networks: the opening evening organized in collaboration with Medici Senza Frontiere; the Volonté30 event, which celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of the death of the great actor Gian Maria Volonté; the focus dedicated to documentaries produced by DAMS students of the University of Padua; the first edition of Il RiFF meets the Veneto Film Festivals, a format aimed at giving space to the programs of the regional festivals dedicated to short films; three talks created in collaboration with the city’s Civic Library.

The competition hosts eight categories awarded with the Golden River Awards by a prestigious international jury: Sguardi italiani, a journey into the new trends of national short cinema; International Horizons, a program that traces new routes in the audiovisual geographies of the various continents; Film schools, a careful selection of works produced by some of the most prestigious universities in the world; Animation, a polyphony of animated languages and techniques from stop-motion to drawn animation, from computer graphics to digital rendering; Queer Shorts, a reflection on the theme of queer identity, understood as a fluid identity in continuous change; Documentaries, evocative life documents created through an exhilarating polyphony of narrative and aesthetic poetics; Anthropocene (climate and human rights), a section aimed at raising public awareness on the topic of human rights and climate change through cinematographic culture; Theme in focus, a section that each year focuses on a different theme inspired by particular events and celebrations. The VR Experience and World in Focus: Palestine sections are awarded with the Audience Prize. The focus on Palestina is organized in collaboration with NAZRA – Palestine Short Film Festival. I hope that this new artistic mandate can help transform the RiFF into a laboratory of great vitality projected towards the future of the moving image.

Uli Gaulke – Presidente di Giuria / Jury President

Uli Gaulke è autore e regista di documentari pluripremiati. Con il suo primo film Havanna Mi Amor (2001) ha vinto il German Film Awards (Lola 2001) come miglior documentario. Il film è stato distribuito nei cinema di tutto il mondo ed è stato invitato alla Berlinale come film di apertura della sezione Forum, e a più di 30 altri festival come Cannes, AFI Fest Los Angeles, Miami IFF e Cinema du Reél, Parigi. Comrades In Dreams (2007) è stato nominato per il World Cinema Jury Prize for Documentary. Dopo aver distribuito Pink Taxi nel 2009, il suo film As Time Goes By In Shanghai (2013) è stato presentato in anteprima all’Hot Docs Toronto e ha vinto il Gran Premio della Giuria all’Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival 2014. Dal 2023 è Visiting Professor presso l’Academy of Film, School of Creative Arts presso l’Università Battista di Hong Kong e Professore a contratto presso l’Università di Hong Kong.

Uli Gaulke is a Berlin-based author and director of award-winning documentaries. Christine Hiu Ying Choy

La dottoressa Christine Hiu Ying Choy ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca presso la Scuola di giornalismo e comunicazione dell’Università cinese di Hong Kong. La sua ricerca si concentra su arte, inclusione culturale e benessere, nuovi media e industrie creative, minoranze sociali e gestione delle crisi. Christine è la ricercatrice titolare di due progetti di sovvenzione RGC in corso: (2022-2024) “Arte a casa: l’impatto dei nuovi media e della produzione culturale online sull’impegno artistico domestico” e (2024-2025) “Arte e ben-essere: l’impatto dell’impegno artistico sullo stress dei genitori e sul benessere mentale”. Christine ha ottenuto i Top Paper Awards presentati dalle principali conferenze accademiche cinesi. Ha ricevuto l’HSUHK Teaching Excellence Award 2020/21. I suoi lavori di ricerca sono stati pubblicati su varie riviste scientifiche. Ha lavorato, inoltre, come traduttrice freelance di sottotitoli cinematografici per il mercato di Hong Kong (tra i film: Yves Saint Laurent, Vampire Academy, The Last Exorcism 2, Sin City 2, Machete Kills).

Dr Christine Hiu Ying Choy obtained her PhD degree from the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on arts, cultural inclusion and well-being, new media and creative industries, and social minorities and crisis management. Christine is the Principal Investigator of two ongoing RGC grant projects: (2022-2024) “Art at Home: The impact of new media and online cultural production on home-based arts engagement” and (2024-2025) “Arts for well-being: The impact of arts engagement on parental stress and mental well-being”. Christine has obtained the Top Paper Awards presented by the leading academic conferences. She is the recipient of the HSUHK Teaching Excellence Award 2020/21. Her works are published in various SSCI-indexed journals. She was a freelance movie subtitle translator who translated several movies from English to Traditional Chinese for the Hong Kong market: Yves Saint Laurent, Vampire Academy, The Last Exorcism 2, Sin City 2, Malavita, Machete Kills.

Melanie Ekholdt

Melanie Ekholdt è psichiatra e regista. Nel 2015, quando Melanie porta a compimento la specializzazione in psichiatria infantile e adolescenziale, si ispira alla storia personale del giovane artista rap Michael Kildal per realizzare il documentario Michael In Love with Craziness. Successivamente ha diretto il documentario Hunting the spirit of time (2023) e cinque cortometraggi A Dollhouse 2020 (2021), Dollhouse 2041 (2022), Noras Wedding 1905 (2022), A Dollhouse in Kristiania (2023), Breaking Free (2024). Nel 2017 ha fondato Joyful Production, una società di produzione cinematografica indipendente che crea storie di vita con freelance altamente qualificati. L’azienda ha sede a Oslo, in Norvegia.

Melanie Ekholdt is a creative psychiatrist and filmmaker. In 2015, when Melanie completed her specialization in child and adolescent psychiatry, she was inspired by the personal story of the young rap artist Michael Kildal to make the documentary Michael In Love with Craziness. Subsequently, she directed the documentary Hunting the spirit of time (2023) and five short films A Dollhouse 2020 (2021), Dollhouse 2041 (2022), Noras Wedding 1905 (2022), A Dollhouse in Kristiania (2023), Breaking Free (2024). In 2017 she founded Joyful Production, an independent film production company creating stories about life with highly skilled freelancers. The company is based in Oslo, Norway.

Enes Erbay

Dopo aver studiato Economia in Turchia, si è trasferito a Londra per studiare regia cinematografica. Dopo alcune esperienze di lavoro a Londra, ritorna nel paese dove lavora in TV per 2 anni. Inoltre è stato in India e Corea del Sud per progetti cinematografici. Successivamente, ha co-fondato Erbay Media. Durante questo periodo ha diretto e prodotto diversi film. Nel 2017 ha fondato Teferruat Film. Dalla fondazione della Teferruat Film ha prodotto cinque film e ha coprodotto due lungometraggi. Dal 2023 dirige il Bosphorus Film Festival a Istanbul, Turchia.

After studying Economics in Turkey, he moved to London to have education in Directing Film. He worked in London for some time after graduation. When he came back to Turkey he worked in TV for 2 years. Also he has been in India and South Korea for film projects. Afterwards, he co-founded Erbay Media. During this period he directed and produced several films. In 2017, he founded Teferruat Film. Since the foundation of Teferruat Film he has produced five, co-produced two feature films. In 2023 he also became the coordinator of the Bosphorus Film Festival in İstanbul, Turkey.

Charlotte Roustang

Regista e produttrice creativa. È attiva nel settore audiovisivo dal 2001 e come autrice e regista dal 2003. Ha studiato cinema all’Università Paris VIII e frequentato diversi corsi di sceneggiatura (ad esempio: Robert McKee, John Truby). Prima dell’apertura di The European Casting Studio, con cui è stata direttrice di casting per film indipendenti (ad esempio: This Summer feeling di Mikhael Hers, 2015), ha lavorato come aiuto regista e operatrice di telecamera. Nel 2022 ha co-fondato l’Agorà Audiovisivo di Roma insieme a Pino Nazio (giornalista RAI) e Luca Mancini (regista RAI), un gruppo di professionisti dell’industria cinematografica e televisiva italiana. E ha appena lanciato il Purple label, un progetto di certificazione che garantisce che una produzione cinematografica sia rispettosa delle donne.

Director and creative producer. She has worked in the audio-visual industry since 2001 and as an author-director since 2003. She studied cinema at the University Paris VIII and attended several master classes in scriptwriting (e.g.: Robert McKee, John Truby). She started as a production assistant for The Coproduction Office (e.g.: Triangle of Sadness). Before the opening of The European Casting Studio, with which she cast several independent films (e.g.: This Summer feeling from Mikhael Hers, 2015), she worked as an assistant director and a camera operator. In 2022 she co-founded the Agora Audiovisual in Rome together with Pino Nazio (journalist RAI) and Luca Mancini (film director RAI). And she just launched the Purple label, a project of certification that guarantees that film production is women-friendly.

Gli eventi speciali di apertura sono molteplici e dettano i tracciati di nuove reti partenariali: la serata di inaugurazione realizzata in collaborazione con Medici Senza Frontiere; l’evento “Volonté30”, che celebra il trentennale della morte del grande attore Gian Maria Volonté; il focus dedicato ai documentari prodotti dagli studenti del DAMS dell’Università di Padova; la prima edizione di “Il RiFF incontra i festival italiani”, un format volto a dare spazio ai programmi dei festival veneti dedicati al cinema corto; tre talk realizzati in collaborazione con la Biblioteca Civica della città.

MSF è un’organizzazione medico umanitaria internazionale indipendente che fornisce soccorso medico a popolazioni la cui sopravvivenza è minacciata da conflitti armati, violenze, epidemie, disastri naturali o esclusione dell’assistenza sanitaria. Oggi è impegnata in 74 paesi, tra cui Ucraina, Gaza, Afghanistan, Sudan, Yemen e tante altre emergenze più o meno dimenticate.

La sua azione si basa sui principi dell’etica medica e dell’imparzialità, rispondendo ai bisogni delle persone senza discriminazioni di alcun tipo. La sua indipendenza è garantita dalle donazioni dei privati che rappresentano in Italia il 100% dei fondi raccolti.

A Padova dal 2004 è attivo un gruppo locale di volontari che, condividendo i valori dell’associazione, dedicano parte del proprio tempo libero all’organizzazione di iniziative locali come convegni, presentazioni di libri e film, partnership sul territorio e iniziative nelle scuole, con lo scopo di contribuire alla sensibilizzazione della società civile sul diritto alla salute e sull’azione medico umanitaria in favore delle popolazioni in difficoltà.

MSF is an independent international medical humanitarian organization that provides medical relief to populations whose survival is threatened by armed conflict, violence, epidemics, natural disasters or exclusion of health care. Today it is engaged in 74 countries, including Ukraine, Gaza, Afghanistan, Sudan, Yemen and many other more or less forgotten emergencies.

Its action is based on the principles of medical ethics and impartiality, responding to people’s needs without discrimination of any kind. Its independence is guaranteed by donations from private individuals, who represent 100% of the funds raised in Italy.

A local group of volunteers has been active in Padua since 2004. Sharing the values of the association, they devote part of their free time to organizing local initiatives such as conferences, book and film presentations, partnerships in the area and initiatives in schools, with the aim of contributing to the awareness of civil society on the right to health and medical humanitarian action in favour of populations in need.

A vent’anni dalla tragica scomparsa, il documentario ripercorre la vita del medico Carlo Urbani che per primo identificò la SARS nel corso dell’epidemia esplosa in Vietnam nel 2003, bloccandone la diffusione. La narrazione è affidata alle testimonianze di parenti, amici e alle numerose immagini e filmati di repertorio che ritraggono i momenti più significativi del percorso umano e professionale di Carlo Urbani: dal viaggio in Cambogia, al trasferimento in Vietnam, dal Premio Nobel assegnato a Medici Senza Frontiere di cui è stato Presidente, fino all’impegno pagato con la sua stessa vita per evitare il diffondersi su scala mondiale del terribile virus SARS.

Twenty years after his tragic death, the documentary traces the life of physician Carlo Urbani, who first identified SARS during the epidemic that broke out in Vietnam in 2003, stopping its spread. The narrative is entrusted to the testimonies of relatives, friends, and numerous archive images and footage depicting the most significant moments of Carlo Urbani’s human and professional journey: from his trip to Cambodia, to his move to Vietnam, from the Nobel Prize awarded to Doctors Without Borders, of which he was president, to the commitment paid with his own life to prevent the worldwide spread of the terrible SARS virus.

Riccardo De Angelis (1980) and Romeo Marconi (1962) are two directors from the Marche region who have been involved in documentary filmmaking for several years. In 2015, they made “The Children of ‘44 - Memories of an Eccidio,” a documentary dedicated to the victims of the Montesole massacre., and in 2019, the documentary “Spado’, the Naked Dancer,” focused on the biographical and artistic story of Alberto Spadolini. The work was presented in competition at numerous film festivals including The 38thBellaria Film Festival, the 16th Los Angeles Italia Film Fashion and Art Festival and a special mention at the 15thEast Film Festival.

Riccardo De Angelis (1980) e Romeo Marconi (1962), sono due registi marchigiani impegnati da diversi anni nella produzione di documentari. Nel 2015 hanno realizzato “I bambini del ‘44 - Memorie di un eccidio”, documentario dedicato alle vittime dell’eccidio di Montesole., e nel 2019, il documentario “Spado’, il danzatore nudo”, incentrato sulla vicenda biografica ed artistica di Alberto Spadolini. L’opera è stata presentata in concorso a numerosi festival cinematografici tra cui Il 38°Bellaria film festival, il 16°Los Angeles Italia Film Fashion and Art Festival e menzione speciale al 15°Est Film Festival.

Nel 30° anniversario della morte, il RiFF ricorda Gian Maria Volonté con un evento speciale fuori programma. Volontè (Milano 1933 – Florina 1994), durante la sua carriera, ha dato vita a una straordinaria galleria di personaggi che ne fanno un’icona del cinema di impegno politico e civile. La sua è una concezione moderna e originale dell’arte attorale, più cosciente e responsabile, che si basa non solo sulla tecnica recitativa, ma anche su una “partecipazione critica” alla personificazione del personaggio. La sua tensione verso un’arte che sappia raccontare il proprio tempo si sostanzia anche nell’impegno diretto alle battaglie sociali e democratiche della sua epoca.

On the 30th anniversary of his death, the RiFF pays homage to Gian Maria Volonté with a special event. During his career, Volontè (Milan 1933 – Florina 1994) gave life to an extraordinary gallery of characters that make him an icon of the cinema of political and civil commitment. His is a modern and original conception of the actor, more conscious and responsible, which is based not only on acting technique but also on a “critical participation” in the personification of the character. His tension towards an art capable of narrating its time is also substantiated by his direct commitment to the social and democratic battles of his era.

Un importante funzionario della questura (Volonté) che ha ucciso la propria amante (Bolkan), scopre a sue spese che il suo ruolo lo mette al riparo da ogni accusa: chi potrebbe denunciarlo (uno studente contestatore) non lo fa perché gli fa comodo credere che tutti poliziotti sono criminali, mentre i suoi superiori non vogliono nemmeno prendere in esame la sua confessione perché il potere non può perdere la sua credibilità. Thriller psicoanalitico sulla cristallizzazione e le aberrazioni del potere, il film analizza in chiave grottesca i metodi e i fini degli apparati polizieschi, ma soprattutto colpisce la precisa descrizione di un personaggio della piccola borghesia meridionale che non ha possibilità di accesso a un potere diverso da quello burocratico-poliziesco e che sfoga nell’autorità le sue repressioni sessuali e di classe. An important police official (Volonté) who killed his lover (Bolkan), discovers at his expense that his role protects him from any accusation: anyone who could report him (a protesting student) does not do so because it suits him to believe that all policemen are criminals, while his superiors don’t even want to consider his confession because the power cannot lose its credibility. A psychoanalytic thriller on the crystallization and aberrations of power, the film analyzes in a grotesque way the methods and aims of the police apparatus, but above all it is striking with the precise description of a character from the southern lower middle class who has no possibility of accessing a power other than the bureaucratic one -police and which vents its sexual and class repressions in authority. Il Laboratorio per la realizzazione di documentari del DAMS (ex Laboratorio di videoscrittura) ha iniziato la sua attività nell’anno accademico 1991/1992 da un’idea del Prof. Gian Piero Brunetta. Fin da allora gli studenti frequentanti la Facoltà di Lettere hanno utilizzato i sistemi audiovisivi di montaggio per realizzare prima videotesi e videosaggi, successivamente anche documentari. Oltre 1400 persone lo hanno frequentato in 33 anni di esercitazioni e numerose di queste sono diventate professionisti nel mondo degli audiovisivi. Dal 1991 il responsabile scientifico è il Prof. Mirco Melanco.

RIFF MEETS THE DAMS - UNIVERSITY OF PADUA

The Laboratorio per la realizzazione di documentari del DAMS (ex Laboratorio di videoscrittura) began its activity in the 1991/1992 academic year from an idea by Prof. Gian Piero Brunetta. Since then, students attending the Faculty of Letters have used audiovisual editing systems to first create video thesis and video essays, then also documentaries. Over 1400 people have attended it over the years and numerous of them have become professionals in the audiovisual world. Since 1991 the scientific director is Prof. Mirco Melanco.

RIFF MEETS THE VENETO FILM FESTIVALS

The program of the special events includes the first edition of “RiFF meets the Veneto film festivals”, a format aimed at giving space to the programs of regional festivals dedicated to short films. The initiative aspires to create synergistic interactions and opportunities for dialogue with the Venetian entities that deal with film promotion.

Euganea Movie Movement è un’associazione nata nel 2005 che opera per la promozione della cultura cinematografica italiana e straniera. La sua espressione principale è Euganea Film Festival che si svolge nei mesi estivi nell’area dei Colli Euganei (PD) e dei Colli Berici (VI). Dal 2002 propone ogni anno una selezione di opere, tra documentari e cortometraggi di finzione e animazione, che vengono presentate in ambienti suggestivi come parchi, ville e castelli ed affiancati da eventi speciali quali concerti, workshop, incontri con autori e spettacoli teatrali. Dal 2020 il Festival ha preso una direzione più marcata verso i temi ambientali. Euganea Movie Movement collabora con diversi esponenti del panorama culturale cinematografico veneto e opera con una fitta rete di enti, come comuni, università, istituti scolastici e associazioni.

Euganea Movie Movement is an association founded in 2005, active in promoting the Italian and foreign film culture. Its main expression is Euganea Film Festival which takes place in summer in the area of the Colli Euganei (PD) and Colli Berici (VI). Since 2002 has been proposing every year a selection of works, including documentaries and short fiction and animation films, which are presented in evocative settings such as parks, villas and castles and accompanied by special events such as concerts, workshops, meetings with authors and theatrical performances. Since 2020, the festival has taken a more pronounced direction toward environmental issues. Euganea Movie Movement collaborates with various exponents of the Veneto film cultural scene and works with a dense network of entities, such as municipalities, universities, educational institutions and associations.

Surreal animation that connects the world of flying machines with the realm of flora and fauna. Suddenly the plane crashes into a tree canopy. The tragedy that seems to be the end opens a new phase of the story. At the crash site a new life awakens that must now solve the mystery of its origin.

I figli hanno la loro vita e nessuno si occupa della terra come loro vorrebbero. Anche il tempo sta cambiando e non li aiuta.

Michele and Maria have done their share in this life. Of their years they have spent eighty as farmers. Harvest time brings with it a now distant past. The children have their own lives and no one takes care of the land as they would like. Even the weather is changing and it does not help them.

He began his artistic education at an art high school in Lublin, where he devoted himself to drawing, painting, and woodcarving. He then became interested in photography and animation. In 2006 he began his studies at the National Film School in Łódź. In his works he combines biology, exact sciences and minimalist surrealism.

Filmmaker. In his films he explores traditions and practices of the peasant world of his two lands: the Veneto and Puglia. He collaborates with the Oral History Laboratory of the University of Padua and serves as an expert trainer for the CiPS project - Cinema and Images for Schools.

Founded in 2005 in the charming lakeside town of Revine Lago, the Lago Film Fest is an independent festival of experimental cinema. A festival that focuses on the future of cinema through the magnifying glass of short films and which develops through films in competition, thematic focuses, fireworks, dialogue festival meetings, B.I.D. Barefoot Industry Days, the days dedicated to professionals in the film sector and the expanded creativity of the Borgo. Nine days of films, of recording the future and the present, of artistic contaminations, of meetings and proposals that think of cinematographic art as a continuously evolving dimension. The Italian colonialism still remains shrouded in the shadows. Using the materiality of archival sounds and images, the film recounts the invasion of Ethiopia in 1936 through the school notebook of a small balilla.

AM remembers, maybe she dreams, and days and nights follow each other. The House in the Woods gets crowded with mysterious visitors while a Little Dragon moves tiny, unsteady steps out of the darkness of memory. The humanist vision of Anna Maria Ortese echoes through the collective dream of the guests of a drug rehabilitation center.

Exploiting a glitch in Red Dead Redemption 2, the director’s avatar pushes into territories not meant to be played, even though they were created by the programmers. Here we encounter atmospheres, areas and objects charged with mystery and surreality.

Director and visual artist. After graduating from DAMS in Rome 3, he attended ESRA in Paris. Back in Italy, he made In Aquis Fundata, a film about the relationship between Venice and water through the eyes of some of the last Venetians, with which he participated in several international festivals (Bellaria FF, Rome Independent FF).

We are an annual film festival held in the heart of Venice, in the isle of Lido, Italy. We think of cinema as an open-mind tool that can “illuminate” aspects of the human experience that we usually do not perceive. Our festival is a stable annual reference for dialogue between different cultures. We also want to create a vibrant and pleasant environment where we can meet creative people and see the works of talented young authors.

Karoline è un’agente di polizia di 28 anni che sta combattendo contro il cancro da un anno. Quando finalmente vince la mattia, può tornare alla sua vita normale. Ora tutto andrà meglio! Giusto?

The film is an honest, heartfelt story about a reality experienced by many, yet unknown or barely talked about. Karoline is a 28-year-old police officer who has been fighting cancer for a year. Finally, she is announced cancer-free and that means she can go back to her normal life. Everything is gonna be better now! Right?

Un ritratto intimo che fa luce sul rapporto tra le donne e il loro seno. Nel corso di diversi anni di registrazione, Olgha Montero Arce, pittrice e attrice, ricorda la sua adolescenza cercando di nascondere la totale assenza di seno, la sua felicità grazie alle protesi e, ancora, la sofferenza di nascondere un seno sfigurato dopo averlo danneggiato in una mammografia.

An intimate portrait which sheds light on the relationship between women and their breasts. Throughout several years of recording, Olgha Montero Arce, a painter and actress, remembers her adolescence trying to hide her total absence of breasts, her happiness thanks to implants and, again, the suffering of concealing a disfigured breast after having it damaged in a mammogram.

Hansine Killingmoe Såstad is a feminist, activist, and Norwegian filmmaker, who wants to change the world for the better, one movie at a time.

She is the director and screenwriter of the short films Se paga al acto, Lencería de ocasión (nominated for the Goya Awards in 1995 and 2000, respectively), Por estar contigo (2002) and Patología mamaria (2021) and the feature films Un contrato extraño (2013) and En modo silencio (2016).

Il Believe Film Festival è il primo Festival Italiano interamente dedicato ai cortometraggi realizzati da troupe di giovani tra i 14 e i 24 anni. Giunto alla 7^ edizione, è una festa del cinema di quattro giorni che si svolgerà a Verona dal 24 al 27 ottobre 2024, organizzata da 70 giovani volontari di Believe Aps con un obiettivo: creare un’esperienza unica per i loro coetanei all’insegna del cinema del futuro. Tra le attività previste, non solo proiezioni e premiazioni, ma anche la possibilità di partecipare a masterclass e workshop con professionisti del settore, di visitare la Believe Cinema Expo, la prima esposizione a tema cinema per adolescenti e giovani, e di presentare i propri progetti in una speciale sessione di pitch, per fare rete ed entrare in contatto con altri giovani appassionati di cinema.

The Believe Film Festival is the first Italian festival entirely dedicated to short films made by crews of young people aged between 14 and 24. Now in its 7th edition, it is a four-day film festival that will take place in Verona from 24 to 27 October 2024, organized by 70 young volunteers from Believe Aps with one objective: to create a unique experience for their peers under the banner of the cinema of the future. Sangre Malo Film è un’associazione di produzione e distribuzione cinematografica con sede a Padova. Dal 2017 a oggi ha prodotto diciassette film tra corto e medio metraggi diretti da sette registi diversi. I film sono stati distribuiti Su ChiliTV, WeShort, Prime Video, ShortsTV e in festival di tutto il mondo con oltre ottanta tra premi e selezioni ufficiali. Sangre Malo Film tiene regolarmente eventi di proiezione in sala e gestisce Intervalli Festival, curando la sezione cinema che nel 2024 ha visto la terza edizione del festival al Cinema Rex per sette giorni.

Sangre Malo Film is a film production and distribution association based in Padua. From 2017 to today it has produced seventeen short and medium-length films directed by seven different directors. The films have been distributed on ChiliTV, WeShort, Prime Video, ShortsTV and in festivals around the world with over eighty awards and official selections. Sangre Malo Film regularly holds screening events in theaters and manages Intervalli Festival, taking care of the cinema section which in 2024 saw the third edition of the festival at Cinema Rex for seven days.

Corti a Ponte è un Festival Internazionale di Cortometraggi che promuove la cultura del cinema breve con particolare attenzione al mondo della scuola. Basa la sua originalità sul coinvolgimento attivo del pubblico di tutte le età, a partire dai piccolissimi (3 anni). Accanto alla sezione ufficiale per corti d’autore propone una sezione dedicata alle opere fatte da bambini e ragazzi dai 3 ai 25 anni, provenienti da tutto il mondo. Corti a Ponte è nato nel 2008 a Ponte San Nicolò, un comune senza cinema alle porte di Padova. Negli anni il festival è riuscito a trasformare “i corti” da oggetto sconosciuto ad appuntamento atteso ogni maggio dai cittadini di ogni età, coinvolgendo anche Padova ed i comuni limitrofi.

Corti a Ponte is an International Short Film Festival that promotes the culture of short cinema with particular attention to the world of schools. It bases its originality on the active involvement of audiences of all ages, starting from the very young (3 years old). Alongside the official section for author shorts, it offers a section dedicated to works made by children and young people aged 3 to 25, from all over the world. Corti a Ponte was born in 2008 in Ponte San Nicolò, a municipality without a cinema on the outskirts of Padua. Over the years the festival has managed to transform “the shorts” from an unknown object into an event awaited every May by citizens of all ages, also involving Padua and the surrounding municipalities.

Gooseville, vicino al nulla e lontano da tutto. Gli abitanti vivono dell’allevamento di specie che ogni volta sfruttano eccessivamente, dalle oche ai girini. Pubblicità, televendite e altro ci mostrano la devoluzione di un piccolo villaggio francese che corre verso la sua fine.

Gooseville is close to nothing and far away from everything. The inhabitants live off the farming of species that they overexploit each time, from geese to tadpoles. Each new managing and self-consuming environment is told through low-budget homemade TV shows. Advertising, teleshopping and others show us the devolution of a small French village rushing towards its end.

Álvaro has directed short films that have won several awards. Meka is co-founder of the production company Bilby with which he combines his work in advertising with the development of fiction projects.

L’intervento mira ad approfondire il legame che intercorre tra i festival cinematografici e le istituzioni scolastiche, emerso dal lavoro di ricerca magistrale I film festival come realtà educative e di formazione, analisi e considerazioni di un fenomeno in crescita. L’attenzione verrà posta su specifici campi d’interesse quali le tempistiche, i finanziamenti, le modalità, la tipologia di alunni e istituti coinvolti e le attività didattiche svolte dai festival nelle realtà educative con particolare riferimento ad alcuni Festival del Veneto, dimostrando la crescente sinergia in atto tra il mondo festivaliero e quello istituzionale-educativo.

The talk aims to deepen the link between film festivals and educational institutions, which emerged from the master’s research work Film festivals as educational and training realities, analysis and considerations of a growing phenomenon. The seminar will focus on specific fields of interest such as timing, funding, methods, the type of pupils and institutes involved and the educational activities carried out by the festivals in educational realities with particular reference to some Festivals in the Veneto, demonstrating the growing ongoing synergy between the festival world and the institutional-educational one.

Laureata in Lettere Moderne presso l’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, fa parte del direttivo del Lago Film Fest, dove si occupa della promozione e partecipazione attiva delle micro-comunità locali e del coinvolgimento di nuovi pubblici, ed è la referente dei rapporti con gli enti territoriali.

Graduated in Modern Literature at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, she is part of the board of directors of Lago Film Fest, where she is responsible for the promotion and active involvement of local micro-communities and for engaging new audiences, and is in charge of relations with local institutions.

Una vita dedicata al cinema e alla fotografia di Adriana Lotto, Mirco Melanco, Romina Zanon (2023), e lmmaginare il Veneto. Cinema e territorio nello sguardo di Mario Bertagnin a cura di Lucia Bertagnin (2022). I volumi indagano i molteplici elementi connettivi che intersecano gli spazi di convergenza tra cinema, fotografia e storia e il loro impatto sulla memoria privata e pubblica, locale, nazionale e internazionale. Dalla preistoria foto-cinematografica all’epoca digitale, i due linguaggi mass-mediali possono essere letti come vettori che portano a considerare l’immagine sia come fonte testimoniale e “specchio della realtà” sia come agente storico e occhio pervasivo in grado di influenzare la società contemporanea nel suo modo di percepire il reale. Attraverso questa iniziativa ci si propone di portare all’attenzione del pubblico una serie di autori, sguardi e linguaggi del cinema e della fotografia ignorati o dimenticati, se non addirittura mai censiti dalla critica o dalla letteratura scientifica, e, contestualmente, autori più conosciuti che necessitano di studi maggiormente approfonditi in termini di analisi e revisione complessiva della loro opera.

The volumes investigate the multiple connective elements that intersect the spaces of convergence between cinema, photography and history and their impact on private and public, local, national and international memory. From photo-cinematic prehistory to the digital age, the two mass media languages can be read as vectors that lead to considering the image both as a testimonial source and “mirror of reality” and as a historical agent and pervasive eye capable of influencing the contemporary society in its way of perceiving reality. The editorial collection aims to bring to the public’s attention a series of authors, perspectives and languages of cinema and photography that have been ignored or forgotten, if not even never surveyed by critics or scientific literature, and, at the same time, more well-known authors who require more in-depth studies in terms of analysis and overall revision of their work.

NEL CINEMA - THE USE OF GENERATIVE AI IN FILMMAKING”

La Masterclass “L’uso dell’intelligenza artificiale generativa nel cinema” si concentra sulla creazione di testi, immagini, sequenze video e audio, nonché animazioni con l’aiuto dell’intelligenza artificiale generativa e sul loro utilizzo nel processo di realizzazione cinematografica. Si tratterà lo stato attuale della tecnologia e si impareranno alcune nozioni di base sull’intelligenza artificiale generativa. Si esplorerà, inoltre, l’uso concreto di applicazioni consolidate di intelligenza artificiale generata come ChatGPT, Midjourney, Runway ML, Pika Labs, Elevenlabs e Domo AI.

The Masterclass “The Use of Generative AI in Filmmaking” focuses on the creation of texts, images, video and audio sequences as well as animations with the help of Generative AI and their use in the filmmaking process. At the beginning, we will get an introduction to the current state of the technology and learn a few basics about Generative AI. Then we will explore the concrete use of established Generated AI applications such as ChatGPT, Midjourney, Runway ML, Pika Labs, Elevenlabs and Domo AI.

Uli Gaulke

Uli Gaulke, nato nella DDR, è autore e regista di documentari pluripremiati residente a Berlino. Ha studiato regia alla Konrad Wolf Film University di Babelsberg e ha vinto con il suo primo documentario Havanna Mi Amor nel 2001 il German Film Awards (Lola 2001) come miglior documentario. Il film è stato distribuito nei cinema di tutto il mondo ed è stato invitato alla Berlinale come film di apertura della sezione Forum, e a più di 30 altri festival come Cannes, AFI Fest Los Angeles, Miami IFF e Cinema du Reél, Parigi. Il suo secondo film Marry Me (Berlinale 2003) è stato seguito da Comrades In Dreams, proiettato al Sundance World Documentary Competition 2007 ed è stato nominato per il World Cinema Jury Prize for Documentary. Dopo aver distribuito Pink Taxi nel 2009, il suo film As Time Goes By In Shanghai (2013) è stato presentato in anteprima all’Hot Docs Toronto e ha vinto il Gran Premio della Giuria all’Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival 2014. Dal 2023 è Visiting Professor presso l’Academy of Film, School of Creative Arts presso l’Università Battista di Hong Kong (Class Director’s Palette – Master of Arts in Producing for Film and New Media).

Uli Gaulke, born in the GDR, is a Berlin-based author and director of award-winning documentaries. He studied directing at the Konrad Wolf Film University of Babelsberg and won with his fist documentary feature Havanna Mi Amor in 2001 at the German Film Awards (Lola 2001) for Best Documentary. The film had a successful release at cinemas worldwide and was invited to Berlinale as the opening film of the Forum, as well as to more than 30 other festivals like Cannes, AFI Fest Los Angeles, Miami IFF and Cinema du Reél, Paris. His second film Marry Me (Berlinale 2003) was followed by Comrades In Dreams, which screened at Sundance World Documentary Competition 2007 and was nominated for the World Cinema Jury Prize for Documentary. ITALIAN GAZES

The first section of the competition outlines a pathway into the new trends of Italian short films, constituting an opportunity for visibility for national works of high artistic quality that are often excluded from the main channels of film distribution. With this focus, the River Film Festival aims to create a bridge between the public and the expressive possibilities of contemporary Italian short films capable of offering a polyphony of narratives and stylistic approaches of great vitality in the proposed program schedule.

He moved to Rome where he graduated in English and German Literatures. He was then admitted at the DFFB - German Television Film Academy in Berlin. His first feature length film “Altri Cannibali” celebrated its world premiere at PÖFF 2021 where it was awarded as „Best First Feature“.

Jordi Penner

Italian film director, screenwriter (WGI) and teacher. He has attended the University of Bologna, University of California and University of Amsterdam. In 2020 he wrote and directed his first short film “Amore Cane”, winner of a special mention at RIFF - Rome Independent Film Festival.

Mario è un pescatore che ha speso tutta la sua vita per il mare e per la sua famiglia. A sessant’anni, vedovo ed indigente, si trova in grande difficolt à: ama il suo lavoro ma è un lavoro che non è più in grado di fare.

Mario is a mussels fisherman who has dedicated his whole life to the sea and to his family. Now sixty years old, widowed and destitute, he finds himself at an impasse: he loves his job but he is no longer able to do it.

Director, cinematographer and photographer. He directed the short film “Il Nostro Concerto”, which received the nomination for the David di Donatello Award in 2019, and the short film “Mammarranca”, officially selected at the Nastri d’Argento 2023 and winner of the Rai Cinema Channel award.

Member of the EFA and of the CNA Cinema and Audiovisivo Sardegna. From 2011 he is the artistic director of the Figari Film Fest, and from 2017 he curates the Olbia Film Network. In 2020 he produced “Inverno” by Giulio Mastromauro, which won the Best Short Film Award at the David di Donatello.

In an Italy ravaged by a world health crisis, Daniela, a new medical intern, is left to notify patients’ families reporting their deaths, in the midst of a lockdown. One deceased patient, who appears to have no contacts, has left a mysterious message for a woman just before dying. Will Daniela have the courage to call her?

Graduated in modern literature, in 2020 he studied screenwriting at the New York Film Academy of Los Angeles. In 2021 Cesare directed his first short film, “La barzelletta”, part of a horror pills series. Since 2017 he works as press officer for Venice Film Festival and for La Biennale.

Back in 2010, Andrea Casadio took part in the 67th Venice Film Festival with a documentary, at the very start of his career, as assistant director. He kept honing his art through commercials, without ever losing his signature narrative touch. Many of his works have received awards at several Festivals.

Valerio non riesce più a provare emozioni. La sua unica passione è far esplodere i formicai con delle bombe artigianali. Per sopravvivere lavora come animatore di feste per bambini vestendosi da lupo. Quando un nuovo animatore con un costume identico al suo gli ruba il lavoro, Valerio pianifica una vendetta che si rivelerà un nuovo inizio.

Valerio can no longer feel emotions. His only passion is blowing up anthills with homemade bombs. To survive he works as an entertainer at children’s parties by dressing as a wolf. When a new animator wearing a costume identical to his steals his job, Valerio plans revenge that will prove to be a new beginning.

Through a kaleidoscope of languages and authorial approaches that well represent the expressive richness of contemporary short cinema, the “short” universe that the RiFF proposes in this section brings together twenty-four works from numerous countries around the world. A texture of narratives draws a program that traces new routes in the audiovisual geographies of the various continents with particular attention to lesser-known films.

Eivind Landsvik is a writer and director from Norway. His short film Sofia, Last Summer (2021) won the film critics award at the Norwegian Short Film Festival. His latest short film Tits (2023) premiered in the main competition in the Cannes Film Festival.

Rachel Walden is a director and producer from Atlanta, Georgia. In 2017 her MFA thesis film at Boston University was awarded the Adrienne Shelly Foundation production grant for female directors. She currently lives in Brooklyn, New York, where she runs the independent production company Gummy Films.

The story of the movie “bonus” is about a conscientious and hardworking math teacher who faces an uncomfortable situation. During the exams, one of his students gets a failing grade and this causes tension between the teacher and the student.

Nel tentativo di porre fine alla relazione violenta, Sasha lascia il marito, portando con sé sua figlia e sua madre. Quando l’auto rimane bloccata in un ingorgo, Sasha inizia ad avere un attacco di panico. Quando sua madre cerca di intervenire nella situazione, le cose non fanno altro che peggiorare.

In an effort to end the abusive relationship, Sasha leaves her husband, taking her daughter and mother with her. When the car gets stuck in a dead traffic jam, Sasha starts having a panic attack. When her mother tries to intervene in the situation, it only gets worse.

Stanley Xu is a Singaporean filmmaker. Drawing inspiration from his memories of childhood and adolescence,he seeks to explore and capture the nuances and poignancy of the human experience using moving images. His films have gone on to screen at many major international film festivals around the world.

Director originally from Cornwall. She creates emotive and impactful videos across short films and experimental works. In 2017, she won a film commission for Channel 4, Random Acts, and created Duality. Her films have been screened at the I.C.A, New Flesh Gallery, and Tate Modern.

Swiss film director. He made his mark in filmmaking with his debut short film “Step by Step” in 2012, winning the main prize in his category at the “Schweizer Jugendfilmtage” in Switzerland. His documentary, “Desert Dogs,” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2020.

After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in psychology, Alexandre concentrated mainly on his cinematographic studies. His vision is nourished by these two fields, which give him the strength and the desire to put into images a human and committed cinema.

Above the home of the director’s grandparents in Italy there’s an apartment that has been started to be built (If there was a window right here, you would be able to see the sea). What would have happened if the director had grown up there instead of in Switzerland? The director deals with their own South Italian roots, being queer, longings and losses.

Laura works as a writer, director and producer and is co-founder of the Cologne-based production company Filmbetrieb. Laura’s short films have been screened internationally at film festivals and in art contexts.

He is one of seven people selected to take part in an undergraduate degree in cinema directing at the Gian Maria Volonté Film School. During his first year he directed the documentary “Tomorrow we’ll see”, selected at Sheffield Doc Fest. In 2022 his screenplay “House of Covers” won the Rodolfo Sonego Award.

Between cold concrete walls, riddled with holes from the ongoing war, a mother tries to protect her son from the loss of his father and keep him away from the attacks raging outside. Left completely to her own devices, she tries to embody both father and mother at the same time and soon reaches her limits.

He is graduated in mass communication at the Damascus University (Iran) and in Cinema at the Satyajit Ray’s film (India) school. His film “Father’s Footsteps” (2023) won several prizes in Europe.

Alternando stop-motion ad animazione disegnata, a computer grafica e rendering digitale, la selezione proposta costruisce un mosaico di narrazioni e linguaggi visuali che spesso non si offrono come approdi di senso immediato, ma attivano un concatenamento di suggestioni capace di aprire momenti di lirica sospensione nel tessuto visivo e lasciare negli occhi dello spettatore echi sottili di significati.

ANIMATION

Animated language has always had a privileged space within the River Film Festival’s programming and this 18th edition confirms the attention paid to this filmic genre. Alternating between stop-motion and drawn animation, computer graphics and digital rendering, the proposed selection builds a mosaic of narratives and visual languages that often do not offer themselves as landing places of immediate meaning, but activate a chain of suggestions capable of opening moments of lyrical suspension in the visual fabric and leaving subtle echoes of meanings in the spectator’s eyes.

She knew this day would come and the choice she’d have to make. But as it finally comes, Maya cannot wrap her head around it. A mole - it’s so small, so insignificant, just a mark... How can it be so hard to part from it? Can Maya ever feel whole again when a bit of her is taken away?

Philippe Kastner is a student at the Department of Animation at FAMU. So far he has directed and animated several short animated film, such as The Tower (Věž, 2021) as well as a music video for his song Wolfeater (2021).

The last blue-headed matchstick left in an old matchbox pops out and goes on its journey. After three short adventures it always ends up in the same place, it returns to the same box, but never in the same way. The trilogy is a tribute to Chaplin’s classic with its style of object-animated burlesque.

Francesco Elia Stomboli was born in Parma on March 7th 1995. After graduating from the Liceo Artistico Paolo Toschi he moved to Roncade, where he attended the BigRock master’s degree in cgi. From 2021 onwards, he worked on the production of his short films.

The Marisco family are the last witnesses of a difficult time in a Navarrese valley on the border with France. Almost all the families that lived there were engaged in smuggling and the Mariscos were the bosses. Today, they are only ranchers and Juan and Carmen celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.

A poetic pamphlet about our supposed superiority over nature. The film reverses the prevailing narrative on the passivity and pitiability of nature and lets the animals do the talking. Wild foxes, herons, cormorants, gulls and bison: they show us their lives in one of the most densely populated area in the world: the industrial and urban agglomeration of Amsterdam.

This is the story of a thousand-year-old tree, resilient ambassador of Nature and silent witness of History. In 2021 in Sardinia, a thousand-year-old wild olive tree burned. This fire destroyed 70.000 acres of land and houses. Thousands of animals died, suffocated or burned alive.

He studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. In recent years, Veldhoen has been working on video installations, documentaries and short films that have been shown at exhibitions and film- and video festivals worldwide and won several awards.

Carolina Melis studied at Central Saint Martins in London, specialising in illustration and animation. Throughout her career, she has received significant recognition, including a Eurobest, Clio Award, and a nomination for the British Television Craft Awards.

La sezione speciale - con premio del pubblico - dedicata alla Palestina è realizzata in collaborazione con Nazra Palestine Short Film Festival, un progetto di cinema itinerante da e sulla Palestina nato nel 2017 dalla sinergia di diverse associazioni, volontari, cittadini e appassionati di Medio Oriente. Gli intenti che animano il progetto sono sempre gli stessi, anzi sempre più nitidi e sentiti come necessari a fronte delle contingenze storiche degli ultimi mesi. Nazra in arabo significa “sguardo”, l’occhio è il suo logo e il cinema è il suo mezzo. Lo scopo del festival è proprio quello di allargare lo sguardo di quanti conoscono la questione palestinese e di coloro che vogliono avvicinarvisi per le prime volte. L’obiettivo cinematografico fa da filtro e al contempo strumento di resistenza culturale attraverso cui le storie dei e delle Palestinesi vengono raccontate. Nazra si propone quindi come archivio del cortometraggio palestinese, sublimandone lo spirito avanguardistico e amplificando la voce delle autrici e degli autori Palestinesi e non che altrimenti non avrebbero spazio. I luoghi in cui Nazra viene ospitata sono i più disparati: università, teatri, musei, sedi di associazioni formali e informali, carceri e club, ma soprattutto sale cinematografiche, per restituire dignità artistica ad opere ed autori che faticano ad emergere in contesto internazionale, data l’assenza di un indotto e di un’industria cinematografica palestinese.

The special section - with public award - dedicated to Palestine is created in collaboration with Nazra Palestine Short Film Festival, a traveling cinema project about and from Palestine, born in 2017 from the synergy of various associations, volunteers, and citizens passionate about the Middle East. The intentions behind the project remain the same, even clearer and more necessary in light of the historical circumstances of recent months. Wisam Al Jafari

Wisam Al-Jafari is a Bethlehem-based Palestinian filmmaker who received his BFA in cinema from Dar Al-Kalima University in 2019. He directed a number of narrative and experimental short films, including “Ambience”, which won third place at the 2019 Cinefondation - Cannes Film Festival.

She obtained a master’s degree in Media and Sociology of Communications at the City University of London and worked for RAI, English Press TV and now for Left. Oh yeah directed short films about cycling: “Profile of Miguel Induráin” in 2017 and “Mark Cavendish profile” in 2018.

Jum’a lives in a refugee camp. Every day, early in the morning, he goes to the entrance of the field and earns a living by selling coffee. He would need a second job, but the only possibility he finds is to demolish another Palestinian’s house, before that let the occupying forces even charge the costs.

Thaer Al Azzah was born in Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem. He holds a degree in Visual Arts and Film Production from the University of Dar Al-Kalima (Bethlehem). He directed three short films: Close Your Eyes, I’m not a Number and The Knife, screened at PFC’E in 2017.

Firas Khoury

Graduate in Art and Cinema, he is a member founder of the Falastinema group, professor of cinematographic expression at the Freedom Theater of the Jenin refugee camp and at the Universities of Nazareth, Haifa, Jaffa and Tunis. He has directed numerous short films including Seven Days in Deir Bulus (2007) and Yellow Mums (2010).

Spostamenti e soglie come racconti di migrazioni e cambiamenti, ma anche come metafore della ciclicità della vita e percorsi interiori dell’individuo.

THEME IN FOCUS: Travels & Borders

“Theme in focus” is a new section that from year to year will focus on a different theme inspired by particular events and celebrations. The theme for 2024 is “Travels and Borders”, connecting to the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death. Displacements and thresholds as stories of migrations and changes, but also metaphors for the cyclical nature of life and inner journeys.

Gabriele Biasi was born in South Italy in 1994. His documentary “Le crisalidi” won an honorable mention at Visioni Italiane 2022. His second work is the experimental documentary “AI Oracle: Lithium”, screened at PhEST - See Beyond the Sea (Italy).

In 2019 she directed her debut short film “In Braccio Alla Corrente”, which premiered at the European Film Festival of Lecce. In 2020 she founded and organized the Apulia Film Fest, a yearly short film festival which takes place in her hometown.

Un film sul futuro, sul desiderio e sulla speranza. Corre l’anno 2032, in Repubblica Ceca tutti i diritti fondamentali sono negati al popolo. Le persone fuggono dall’oppressione del regime totalitario attraverso il confine pesantemente sorvegliato verso lo stato di Zlín, ma molti di loro non sopravviveranno al viaggio verso questo paradiso.

A film about the future, longing and hope. The year is 2032, in the Czech People’s Republic all basic rights are denied to the people. People are fleeing the oppression of the totalitarian regime across the heavily guarded border into the state of Zlín, but many of them will not survive the journey to this paradise.

A freelance video-journalist based in Hong Kong, Edmond Ng is also an aspiring amateur documentary filmmaker. Graduating from the University of Hong Kong with a master’s degree of journalism, he had a chance to learn how to make documentary films from directors Ruby Yang and Uli Gaulke.

Il River Film Festival riconferma la sua attenzione nei confronti della Virtual Reality con una selezione di opere capaci di condurre lo spettatore in un viaggio al confine tra realtà virtuale e virtualità reale. Diversi ed attuali i temi affrontati nelle opere in concorso: i conflitti sociali che minacciano la democrazia, l’emergenza climatica, il rapporto tra realtà e intelligenza artificiale. La sezione VR sarà ospitata all’interno del cinquecentesco Propileo di Porta Venezia, sito di interesse storico-artistico che rappresenta il simbolo identitario del quartiere Portello.

VIRTUAL REALITY

The River Film Festival reconfirms its attention to Virtual Reality with a selection of works capable of leading the viewer on a journey on the border between virtual reality and real virtuality. The themes addressed in the works in competition are various: the social conflicts that threaten democracy, the climate emergency, the relationship between reality and artificial intelligence. The VR section will be hosted inside the sixteenth-century Propylaeum of Porta Venezia, a site of historical-artistic interest which represents the identity symbol of the Portello district.

Milos Tasic is a director and animator specializing in Virtual Reality formats, with extensive expertise in 2D and 3D animation. He is the owner of the production company “Grof Industries” and has received more than a dozen awards worldwide. Born in 1988 in Niš, Serbia.

“Is There Anybody Out There?” is an immersive narrative VR experience. Users engage with virtual objects to advance the storyline. The duration of the experience varies based on how quickly the user interacts with these virtual elements, adding flexibility to the overall completion time.

Diego Bonilla, Ph.D., is an award-winning filmmaker and professor with a passion for exploring new media and digital literacy. His works, including the VR films “Pitched Together” and “Uku Pacha,” have been recognized at international festivals.

Konstantinos Koukoudis is a greek 3D Generalist with experience in video game and VR/AR app development. He studied Audio Visual Arts at Ionian University. His debut interactive VR narrative film, Is There Anybody Out There is an award-winning experience about Covid-19.

1933: When a swastika flag was hoisted in his village, Baltic writer Siegfried von Vegesack withdraws into the woods. In isolation, he wrestles with his own ghosts and has a fateful encounter. He decides that – in order to remain with a clean conscience – he must take his fate into his own hands.

Emil Spiewok

Emil Spiewok has been making film-based VR experiences since 2015. In 2019 Emil completed the interactive VR documentary “Crossing Borders ”, which was shown i.a. at the “dok. fest Munich”, the “VR Days Europe”in Amsterdam and “Filmplaya” in LA.

Shutaro Oku is a film director and videographer, who recently directed “VR Ghost in the Shell,” a theatre show that combined leading technology (i.e. VR, 3D) with Noh theatre. It received a great deal of attention around the world.

L’IMPEGNO DEL RIFF PER LA SOSTENIBILITÀ AMBIENTALE

Il RIFF è impegnato in modo concreto nel cruciale obiettivo del contrasto al cambiamento climatico, promuovendo un modello più sostenibile per la progettazione, l’allestimento e lo svolgimento di tutte le proprie manifestazioni. In riferimento alla riduzione delle emissioni, il RIFF integra principi di sostenibilità ambientale in tutte le fasi del ciclo di vita degli eventi, portando avanti in parallelo un’attività di sensibilizzazione e coinvolgimento del pubblico.

Le principali azioni messe in campo sono:

MOBILITÀ SOSTENIBILE

Il festival ha agevolato con informazioni chiare sul sito e sul catalogo la raggiungibilità dei luoghi dell’iniziativa con mezzi pubblici.

CONSUMI ENERGETICI SOSTENIBILI

Il festival ha utilizzato energia proveniente da fonte rinnovabile (pannelli fotovoltaici).

STAMPA DEI MATERIALI

Il festival, al fine di contrastare lo spreco di carta, ha limitato la quantità di materiali stampati (solo 50 cataloghi e 500 cartoline), utilizzando il formato digitale per i materiali di comunicazione, informazione e promozione dell’evento (catalogo sfogliabile in formato digitale, newsletter, post social).

ALLESTIMENTI

Il festival ha utilizzato strutture e allestimenti generici riutilizzabili negli anni (schermo e zattera, la quale si compone di materiali riciclabili).

GESTIONE DEI RIFIUTI

Nei luoghi dell’iniziativa si è previsto un punto di raccolta rifiuti ben segnalato.

PRODUZIONE GADGET

Il festival non ha prodotto merchandising.

GESTIONE DEGLI OSPITI

Il festival ha organizzato i transfer per gli ospiti facendo esclusivo riferimento ai mezzi pubblici. Gli ospiti hanno alloggiato in strutture ricettive vicino alla sede dell’iniziativa.

SOSTENIBILITÀ ALIMENTARE

Il festival, nei social drink, ha utilizzato prodotti alimentari e bevande della filiera locale, per una valorizzazione dei prodotti del territorio e un sostegno alle piccole e medie aziende locali.

CULTURA AMBIENTALE E SOSTENIBILITÀ SOCIALE

Per sensibilizzare e diffondere consapevolezza sui temi della sostenibilità ambientale e della responsabilità sociale fra tutti i soggetti coinvolti dall’evento (sponsor, pubblico, personale impiegato e la comunità locale), il festival ha aperto sezioni filmiche e tavole rotonde (tenutesi presso l’orto botanico di Padova che, fondato nel 1545, rappresenta il più antico orto al mondo ancora nella sua collocazione originaria) dedicate al tema del clima.

FORMAZIONE E COMUNICAZIONE

Il festival ha promosso un incontro di formazione ambientale per il personale assunto e volontario della manifestazione, tenuto da uno dei relatori della tavola rotonda “Geopolitica del clima”.

Queste scelte producono risultati immediati, e in prospettiva saranno rafforzate per consolidarne i benefici nel lungo termine.

The RIFF is concretely committed to the crucial goal of combating climate change by promoting a more sustainable model for the design, staging and conduct of all its events. With regard to the reduction of emissions, the RIFF integrates principles of environmental sustainability into all phases of the event life cycle, while at the same time carrying out public awareness and involvement.

The main actions implemented are:

SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

The Festival facilitated with clear information on the website and in the catalogue the accessibility of the venues by public transport.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY USE

The Festival used energy from renewable sources (photovoltaic panels).

PRINTING MATERIALS

In order to combat paper waste, the festival limited the amount of printed materials (only 50 catalogues and 500 postcards), using the digital format for communication, information and event promotion materials (digitally browsable catalogue, newsletter, social posts).

FACILITIES

The Festival used generic structures and set-ups that can be reused over the years (screen and raft, which is made of recyclable materials).

WASTE MANAGEMENT

A well-marked waste collection point was provided at the initiative locations.

GADGET PRODUCTION

The Festival produced no merchandising.

GUEST MANAGEMENT

The Festival organised transfers for guests using public transport only. Guests stayed in accommodation facilities close to the venue.

FOOD SUSTAINABILITY

The Festival used food and beverages from the local supply chain in its social drinks, promoting local products and supporting local small and medium-sized enterprises.

ENVIRONMENTAL CULTURE AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

In order to raise awareness and spread awareness on the issues of environmental sustainability and social responsibility among all those involved in the event (sponsors, the public, employees and the local community), the Festival opened film sections and round tables (held at the Botanical Garden of Padua, which, founded in 1545, is the oldest garden in the world still in its original location) dedicated to the theme of climate.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION

The Festival promoted an environmental training session for the event’s hired and volunteer staff, held by one of the speakers at the panel discussion “Climate Geopolitics”.

These choices produce immediate results, and in the long term will be reinforced to consolidate their benefits
