The 2025 golf season is winding down and winter is officially knocking on our door. With a hint of snow in the long-range forecast, our agronomy team is busy tucking the Crest in for its well-earned winter rest. While the course sleeps, we’ll be hard at work behind the scenes tackling tree maintenance, improving fairway drainage, refreshing high-traffic areas with new sod and giving our equipment fleet a full winter tune-up to prepare for an amazing 2026 season
WINTER/SPRING AERATION
our end-of-season aeration is nearly wrapped up! Greens, tees and approaches have been aerated, fertilized, topdressed, and are officially prepped for next year ’s play. Deep solid-tine aeration of the fairways is scheduled for mid-December
Looking ahead, there will be no spring aeration in 2026 Instead, we’ll perform a light venting of all playing surfaces in mid-June after the run of member events. this proven cycle continues to strike the perfect balance between a busy golf calendar and the agronomy needs of our turf
FALL MAINTENANCE
transitioning from daily course prep to winter projects always comes with a long and often exciting checklist. Leaf cleanup has been a breeze thanks to our new leaf vac (we may have even beaten last year ’s record!) the waterfall pumps have been removed for servicing, the irrigation system is winterized, and all fescue areas have been cut down. We also managed to apply additional selective herbicide treatments to the fescue. With last early summer ’s wet stretch encouraging more weeds than usual, fall is a great time to get ahead of them
WINTER PROJECTS
once the temperatures drop and the course goes quiet, our team makes the most of the frozen fairways. ahead of the deep freeze, we’ll be sodding several high-traffic areas along cart paths and around greens and tees additional drainage will be installed in low fairway spots these sand channels proved invaluable during last summer ’s heat and humidity.
our tree maintenance program will continue with the removal of dead trees and strategic pruning of the rest. and of course, winter is also when we roll up our sleeves and service every piece of equipment and every corner of the maintenance building.
Finally, thank you for your continued support throughout the year. From our team to you and your family, we wish you a warm, safe and joyful holiday season!

R ule 5.6a Unreasonable Delay of P lay
By Jamie Komancheck, PGA Head Golf Professional
Twas…a few weeks before Christmas, a front tooth just yanked out a brave little girl doing it herself, nary a whimper or pout the tooth had been loose, tempting her for awhile now finally gone, leaving the cutest gap-toothed smile
I asked Rita what she wanted for Christmas, expecting a musical reply
For the girl loves to sing, she was certainly not shy She skipped the song though, and went straight to the point “a round of golf with Mr. and Mrs. Claus would not disappoint”

Rita’s letter was written, accompanied by a long list of toys
With the letter in hand, brakely, her elf on the shelf was deployed a match at augusta national would be the preferred venue hopefully the peach ice cream sandwich was still on the menu
back the next morning, the elf brought Santa’s answer “Pack your bags and clubs Rita, I’m sending Prancer!” the reindeer arrived, with a large sleigh in tow off to augusta, Georgia is where Rita would go
now 7 years old and a “big girl”, she would go by herself Just keep a close eye on my mischievous elf She blew us a kiss, and took off through the skies Leaving her parents below, with a few “glistening” eyes
the sleigh raced down Magnolia Lane, the Claus’ already on site Rita flashed her gap-toothed smile, much to Santa’s delight the staff from the national quickly emptied the sleigh a quick trip to the Golf Shop before they would play
Rita picked up the phone, being sure to call home telling us about her perfect partner, the Masters Gnome For he knew the golf course, both inside and out and …. he kind of looked like Santa, no doubt the Gnome looked familiar, was he an elf, Santa couldn’t tell he was a good player, with he and Rita faring quite well the course was immaculate, truly a small slice of heaven Rita and the Gnome found themselves two up through eleven there might not be a more famous hole than the Par 3 twelfth Into a breeze, Rita needed her driver, a taylorMade Stealth She played a soft cut, the ball nestling onto the green then Rita just disappeared, quietly leaving the scene

the others played on, wondering where off to she went the Claus’ made Par, a bogey left the Gnome to lament a birdie could win the hole, a two-putt would tie Where could Rita be, the Gnome gave a worried sigh
Rita finally emerged, the group waiting to hear what she had to say For she was now subject to Rule 5.6a Unreasonable Delay of Play Well she began, I felt like I was starting to lose steam So, I hit the concession stand for some yummy peach ice cream
Unreasonable Delay of Play, the rule had surely been met a resulting loss of hole, now just one up, Rita had lots of regret
She apologized to all three, and then she started to cry the Gnome would have none of that, for he was a stand-up guy he told her to hold her head up high, he would tell her the truth We all love and forgive you, even if you’re missing a tooth you are a beautiful girl, and have many wonderful traits now let’s go, hole #13, the best hole at augusta awaits
Rita was inspired, and eagled azalea the challenging Par 5 She won the hole, then led off 14 with a monstrous drive no prisoners were taken, she won that hole in addition the Claus’ were in trouble, but they won every year, it was tradition now it was the Claus’ turn, as they went on the attack Santa reached the Par 5 15th green with two mighty whacks a lengthy eagle putt rolled in, cutting the lead down to two Mrs Claus cheered, smacking his bottom right in full view
a little embarrassed, Santa’s cheeks turned a bright red but no time to relax, hole 16 Redbud, waited ahead the Claus’ hit the green, and so did the strawberry blonde the Gnome took a different approach, and skipped one off the pond
Rita was in shock, watching the ball stay above the water this shot went against everything her Daddy ever taught her the ball exited the pond, bounced onto the green and started to roll It slowly trickled down the slope, and then went right in the hole
It was an outcome that no one would ever have guessed the match was over, on a walk off hole-in-one nonetheless Rita hugged the Gnome and gave him a big kiss this time he blushed, but his heart full of bliss
Santa and Mrs. Claus were all smiles too they were happy for Rita, for this was true Santa got down on his knee and whispered into Rita’s ear For my present, I want a rematch next year!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All! And eat as much ice cream as your heart’s desire!
