GREENS
C O U R S E U P D A T E
The long hot days of summer are nearly in the rearview mirror: with the changing leaves and cool nights, fall is beginning. The Crest’s greens and other playing surfaces are healing up quickly from our August aeration. This was all thanks to the work of the agronomy team and some really awesome weather I don’t think you could have scripted a better aeration week. Thank you to all the members for the support of this critical process The golf this fall should be excellent and hopefully we are playing late into the year.
This summer started off great. The member/member was said to have the fast greens at the Crest on record. Then, mother nature gave us a lot of hot dry weather early We had a six week stretch with no rain and most days over 90 degrees. During this period of extreme stress, the team is forced to reduce mechanical stressors and strictly monitor the moisture of our most valuable playing surfaces Thankfully, as we moved into August the law of averages took hold and we had more rain and cooler temps This led to a great aeration and a quick recovery. We should have amazing conditions this fall with daily mowing, rolling, and grooming
APPROACHES AND TEES
The tees and approach areas came out of the summer looking great We had a few collars and approach areas that needed minor repairs after the abrasive topdressing process Tees continue to be healthier year after year. The additional tees have helped to disperse wear stress and give us some more options for setting up the course Occasionally, this season we have had the course too long, that has been a point of efficiency for our training that we will carry into next season.
FAIRWAYS
With nearly 25 acres of short grass constituting our fairways, they needed a lot of manpower to survive and recover from this hot dry summer. During the June/July heat wave, it was typical for 4-6 team members to spend all day hand watering the fairway in an effort to properly manage their moisture. Too wet can invite fungal diseases and too dry can cause wilting and drought desiccation. The core aeration, fertilizing, and seeding we completed in August have the fairways coming back into peak shape for the upcoming fall season. Some small areas sodded out before member/guest to quicken recovery
ROUGH AND FESCUE
The primary rough around the greens and fairways was aerated, seeded and fertilized this August These areas should continue to get fuller and thicker with the cool fall days. The fescue will be mowed down in early October This season we are excited to have a new tool in our fight against playable fescue. The super sweeper 600 will be going out and flailing, verticutting and vacuuming our fescue this fall. This will thin out the canopy and lead to more playable, thinner, and less weedy fescue next season.

12 IN A BOX
MATERIALS NEEDED:
-12 BALLS WITH BOX -CLUB TO USE TO CHIP AND PUTTER. -GREEN COMPLEX WITH HOLE
Drill starts by identifying what hole on the green you want to chip to, it will remain the same for the duration of the drill. Next place 12 balls in the area you want to hit your chip shot from, this area can be fairway, first cut or deep rough The chipping area will remain the same for the duration of the drill as well
To start, hit all 12 balls onto the green (hopefully) from your identified chipping area After you have hit the 12 balls from your chipping area you will go putt the balls into the hole. If you one putt you put that golf ball back into the box If you two putt that golf ball will go back to your chipping area If you three putt one golf ball will come back out of the box and go to your chipping area
After all 12 golf balls have been holed from round one, go back to original chipping area and hit the chip shot again with the remaining golf balls that are not in the box. Once you have chipped all golf balls onto the green go putt them with the same rules as above You will continue this drill until all golf balls are in the box. Once the drill is completed, on the inside of the box record the following: Shot distance, club used, how many chip shots it took to complete the drill This way you will have a record of each time you do the drill
Please let me know if you have any questions about the above drill or if you need some other creative ways to spend your practice time. Email me at moose.brian@gmail.com.
