20 YEAR CELEBRAT ION

As we embark on RiverCrest ’ s 20th season, it ’ s time to throw a part y! Oh yes, a big part y! On the evening of S aturday Februar y 17th, our Clubhouse doors will open to celebrate the c lub’s past as well as our exciting future.

The vision of Rivercrest began back in 1997; to build a golf c lub where the local communit y could enjoy the game of golf, meet new friends and spend time with family. Af ter seven years of accumulating five land parcels, obtaining approvals from Upper Providence Township and building the course, the Club opened its doors in May 2004. On Februar y 17th, we will again be opening our doors like we did the first time many years ago. But this time to celebrate all that we as a family, membership and staff has accomplished over the last 20!

A committee of six members have been assembled to assist with the planning of the event. You can expect to receive more information in the coming weeks, but for now, please mark your calendars and plan on celebrating with us. It will be the event of the year and all members are welcome to attend!

The warm days, cool nights and changing leaves of fall are here at the Crest. Hopefully, this ear ly S eptember heat wave is the last gasp of summer. The agronomy team is looking for ward to an excellent fall af ter a great summer season. Aeration is behind us and we are preparing the course for the upcoming slate of fall member events.

This summer the greens were ver y consistent W ith increased staffing levels we were able to roll the greens near ly 6 days a week, weather dependent. That increased the overall qualit y of the playing surfaces and consistenc y of green speeds. The overall agronomy program of aerating, topdressing, watering and fertilizing continues to improve the day to day health and predictabilit y of our putting surfaces This fall we will be using our grooming mower set up to help create even better conditions. L ooking for ward to 2024, much of the program will stay in place We will aerate the greens late in 2023 for preparation for next season, then light topdressing in season, a venting of all the bentgrass surfaces in mid june before the hot and wet philly july, finally our big aeration in August.

T EES A N D A P P ROAC H ES

The tees and approaches are having a good season. The approaches are being treated more as an extension of our greens program, and they are responding nicely. The teeing grounds are ver y healthy, thank you to all the members that are filling divots on the par 3 locations. The new tee boxes on 4 and 13 have been well received and with any luck we will get wrapped up on #8 soon.

FA I RWAY S

The fair ways are in good shape this season The increased drainage, aeration and fertilit y has them healthier than ever for the upcoming fall season. This winter we will be continuing with deeptine aeration and additional sand channel drainage.

RO U G H A N D F ES C U E

The rough just off the fair ways and greens was aerated and seeded during our august aeration. W ith some normal fall weather these areas should thicken up nicely in the coming weeks We will continue our program of selective herbicides in the fescue areas, and will be cutting down and treating them as the calendar turns to October

The plantings at the c lubhouse have done well this year. All the new plant material at the pool areas is really starting to fill in. This fall we will be doing our traditional planting of mums and pansies in all our flower beds.

It ’ s not ever y day that golfing royalt y visits RiverCrest But recently we had a ver y special guest in Mr. Gar y P layer come with his grandson Alex to play the course for the first time S ince they didn’t know the course, I asked Rita and Colby to volunteer to fill out their foursome (it wasn’t a hard ask.) Rita was just excited to play, while Colby was awestruck He turned to Rita and said, “Rita, we ’ re going to be playing with one of the people that hits the ceremonial first tee shot at The Masters!” I was within earshot, so af ter making sure Mr P layer didn’t hear him, I pulled Colby aside and said, “Colby, Mr. P layer WON the Masters three times!” His eyes almost popped out of his head

The foursome decided to have a Better Ball match, the youngest and oldest versus to two high school boys. They all hit their tee shots and off they went As the group was on the first green Mr. P layer wanted to get Rita involved so they could bond as teammates. He asked Rita to read his putt Rita looked at Mr P layer and said, “I’d like to help you Mr. P layer, but I’m only in kindergarten, I don’t know how to read yet.” Golf is a beautiful game There is near ly 82 years between Rita and Mr. P layer, and yet here they were enjoying a big laugh together on the first hole.

As the round went along, Rita became more and more enamored with her partner. S he was amaz ed watching his effortless play, and loved how entertaining he was both in stor ytelling and instructing her on the golf swing. S he had to learn more about Mr. P layer. S o as t ypical with this younger generation, instead of just asking him questions, she borrowed her brother ’ s phone and asked S iri about Mr. P layer. S iri told her a cool fact that he has shot better than his age over 3000 times in a row! Rita immediately turned to Mr P layer and asked if he could teach her how to shoot better than her age. Mr. P layer asked Rita her age, to which she replied 5. He then told her to par Hole #1 and walk off the course!

The match was c lose throughout The boys played well trading birdies on several holes. Rita and Mr. P layer hung with them for the most part, but they were 2 down going into the par three 17th hole Both boys successfully found the green. Rita was up next. W hile deciding which c lub she would play, Mr. P layer was instructing Colby to start working on his fitness, recommending at least 100 sit ups, and 100 pushups ever y day. Rita turned to Alex and asked him what c lub he used. Unfortunately, she broke rule 10 2a Advice in doing so

Rule 10.2a Advice states during a round, a player must not ask anyone for advice other than their partner or caddie. S ince Alex was her opponent Rita would suffer the general penalt y which in match play is loss of hole. But since this was a Four Ball match (Better Ball of Partners), under Rule 23 8 which states in Four Ball match play, the general penalt y has no effect on your partner. W hich meant Mr. P layer could still represent their side, even though Rita was out of the hole

Mr. P layer, being the major champion he is, stuck it to two feet and was given his birdie putt They were still in it! That was until Alex rolled in his 15 foot birdie putt to win the match. They all removed their hats and shook hands congratulating the winners on a good match

Rita was disappointed in the outcome, but she had one more question to ask Mr P layer S he told him that we are going to Augusta next April since Colby just qualified for the National Drive, Chip and Putt F inals. Rita asked him, “Mr. P layer will you put the Green Jacket on my brother when he wins the Championship?” Mr P layer gave her a big smile. “Rita, I’d be happy to do that, but he better start doing his pushups and sit ups so he can hit his drives c lose to 300!”

As we make our trip to Augusta next spring, hopefully we can get to see Mr P layer hit that shot off the first tee Wouldn’t that be something!
