S ummer is officially over, and the agronomy team is loving these cool fall days. This past summer was one of the hottest and driest on record The practices that we have done over the past few years along with the long days worked by the team put our turf in a position to hand le a tough summer. This Fall we will continue our normal seasonal practices preparing the course for next season while still offering great golf before the w inter arrives.
The greens have been solid all season long. The aera tion, topdressing, and fertilit y programs continue to work and pay dividends. One area we are looking to improve on is the recover y time on our late Fall/S pring aeration To improve this we are moving the final greens aeration up to mid November, we will be using a smaller diameter aeration tine, and we will be using topdressing with a darker color (recent studies have shown this to be helpful ) Two core aerations are a vital part of the agronomy plan for the golf course, August has worked out perfectly, and we will continue to look for ways to minimiz e the impact of the other aeration event.
The approaches to the greens and the tee boxes are having a great season. This year we have committed to more walk mowing of these areas and they have re sponded nicely to the tighter cuts. we will continue with our hand water, moisture monitoring and other agronomy inputs next season The tee boxes will be the first area that we aerate this winter, as their condition does not impact how golf is scored.
This year we made even more changes to the fair ways agronomy program, and it finally feels like we are mak ing progress The core aeration that we moved up to
August made a big impact on the fair ways this fall. It is nice that we are not doing them now one fair way a day in play. we will be deeptining the fair ways late in win ter, some time around Christmas. This process is critical in breaking through the rock layer that is just under the surface on so many parts of the fair ways.
The rough did not enjoy the hot and dr y summer. Af ter the member guest, we aerovated and seeded large sec tions of rough to aid in recover y from this past S um mer. Most of these areas will recover nicely with the cooler weather, but some will be sodded out with new grass in late October Fall is the best time to seed, and we will continue seeding rough and other playing sur faces through the winter. The fescue areas are being cut down now, before the first frosts we like to cut down our fescue a little ear ly so that we can make a late sea son application of selective herbicides to any warm sea son weeds that have popped up in these areas
Thank you for all your support during all the long days this past summer we hope this Fall is amazing for golf P lease feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
