Director’s View
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has celebrated several historic milestones and conservation achievements that have made a real impact over the past two years. This issue is dedicated to showcasing our successes and highlighting our impact on wildlife and wild places.
The team works diligently to provide outstanding animal and plant care and deliver engaging guest experiences that inspire a love for nature. Their efforts are strengthened by our reputation as a nationally recognized top 5 zoo. All of this is made possible thanks to our members, donors, partners, and community.
As we enter our new fiscal year, construction begins on the Jane B. Friedman Conservation Learning Center. This new education hub will enhance the education experience for young explorers and provide added convenience for parents and guardians. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to open in 2026.
The opening of Saluda Skyride in the coming weeks will mark the beginning of the next phase of Bridge to the Wild, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden’s vision for the future. The electric-powered aerial lift signals a major transformation for Riverbanks. This new mode of transportation highlights the scenic Lower Saluda River, ties it together with our longstanding partnership with Richland and Lexington Counties, and connects the Zoo and Garden in a thrilling new and profound way as we prepare to bring animals and a new dining facility to the west campus. As a thank you for your support, the Saluda Skyride will be included with membership. We can’t wait to soar into our future together.
See you at Riverbanks!

Riverbanks Zoo has been such a fun place for my family to spend time together. We’ve been bringing our kids since they were babies and have had a family membership the majority of the [time]. We’ve enjoyed how interactive several exhibits are and how much effort is put into making the animals at home in a natural habitat—feeding the giraffes is very much a favorite of ours…. It is the best place to spend a memorable day. I’m so happy to support Riverbanks year after year. It’s become a family tradition that will continue to future generations in our family.

Mission Driven
Riverbanks celebrated Migratory Bird Day in October with the theme “Protect Insects, Protect Birds.” Every year billions of birds travel thousands of miles between their breeding and wintering grounds. These amazing migrators play a crucial role in our ecosystems, helping to pollinate plants, control pests, and maintain healthy habitats. In-park activities introduced guests to the threats facing migratory birds, the food sources they rely on, and what everyone can do to make a positive impact. Together, we can ensure these beautiful birds continue to grace our skies for generations to come.
All Guests Welcome
In collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, Riverbanks introduced its first-ever Sensory Sensitivity Night at Wild Lights. This special evening offered dimmed lighting, reduced music, and quiet zones to ensure all guests, including those with sensory sensitivities, could enjoy the magic of the season.
Riverbanks Zoo has always had a special place in my heart. I remember going when I was a kid. I remember field trips, birthday trips, and random trips. My favorite part was always going in the gift shop before we went home. Fast forward several years, and now my kids love Riverbanks! We go on birthdays and random days. My kids also love the gift shop. Thank you, Riverbanks, for always being the best!

Animal Health, Care & Wellbeing
From supporting vulnerable young animals to providing comfort for those in need of geriatric care, the animal care teams at Riverbanks work around the clock to ensure all of the animals in our protection live their best lives. Each individual is treated with compassion, focusing on physical and mental health, comfort, and quality of life. This holistic approach incorporates nutritious meals, enrichment activities, and innovative training techniques to help with routine health checks and specialized treatments.
Training for Impact
A few years ago, animal care staff trained rhino Bill to accept blood draws voluntarily. He was considered one of the first white rhinos to contribute a full bag of plasma for rhinos in need. Riverbanks continues to lead the charge in the collection of plasma as the Southeast’s only source of plasma for giraffes. Reticulated giraffe Bruce contributed his first bag in 2024, after three years of training. Plasma transfusions can be the difference between life and death for vulnerable animals at birth and adults facing intense illnesses. Bruce’s contributions are making a big impact on giraffe care, helping save the lives of giraffes in need. “While ‘blood draw’ may seem like the goal,” Curator of Mammals Alyson Proveaux explains, “our true objective is to ensure a calm, comfortable animal who trusts us. The blood draw is simply the positive outcome of that trust.”
Innovative Solutions
Compassion, care, and creativity are key to being a zookeeper. When challenged to provide adequate warmth for the snakes in her care, Riverbanks’ herpetology keeper Ashton designed a synthetic fallen log equipped with heat lamps to help provide balance and ideal temperatures on the exhibit floor. Ashton’s innovation has become a favorite spot for these cold-blooded residents, ensuring they stay comfortable and thriving in their habitat.
-cellent Achievement
A toco toucan chick hatched at Riverbanks in October 2024, the first in over a decade, marking a significant milestone for the Zoo’s bird department. Bird keeper Amy enthusiastically shared, “I always hoped this day would come, but honestly didn’t think it would. I screamed for joy when I found out we had a fertile egg, and now to see this little guy hopping around…It’s why I got into this business.”
Successes such as these not only play a part in safeguarding a bright future for the animals but also help ensure future generations can experience these magnificent animals for years to come.

THE TALE
OF A TAIL prescriptions for 310 animals
Eighteen-year-old red-ruffed lemur Mena was observed chewing on her tail, damaging her skin and exposing the bone. Zoo vets quickly bandaged her tail and treated Mena with medication and antibiotics, but the lemur repeatedly removed her bandage and chewed her tail again. An outside neurologist was consulted to help address Mena’s discomfort and behavior, while vet tech Lisa used her crochet skills to make a special tail “sock” in hopes it would better protect the tip of the lemur’s tail. This resourceful solution worked well initially. The team checked her tail for healing and re-wrapped it each time with a new sock using the utmost precision, ensuring the sticky side of the tape stayed up to avoid further irritating Mena’s skin. While this meticulous process continued for a few weeks, eventually the tip of Mena’s tail needed to be removed to ensure her health and wellbeing. Mena is now thriving with a shortened tail, thanks to the compassionate care of our vets.

15,134 Plants propagated
The hard work and creativity of our horticulturists are reflected in the lush habitats and spectacular gardens at Riverbanks. Many plantings serve as pollinator-friendly habitats for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators to thrive, a primary goal of our Planting with a Purpose initiative. Summer is a perfect time to see the fruits of their labor and cool off with splash play at Waterfall Junction.
What both the Zoo and Garden areas are accomplishing [in continued] animal and plant preservation is amazing. I am truly proud to have the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden in our area.

Conservation Impact
Making a lasting, positive impact on wildlife and wild places is at the core of the Riverbanks mission. Whether providing compassionate care for the animals at the Zoo or participating in scientific research or fieldwork in our backyard and around the world, we aim to save vulnerable animals and their habitats from the threats of extinction. In 2024, we:
• Released Destiny, a two-year-old green sea turtle, and welcomed Huntington, a juvenile green sea turtle, in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and South Carolina State Parks as part of a head-start program aiming to raise hatchlings to maturity before releasing them back into the ocean.
• Released 19 one-year-old gopher frogs into the wild as part of a tracking project in coordination with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the University of Georgia.
• Increased our physical capacity to propagate corals rescued from the Florida Reef Tract in hopes that the rescued coral and their offspring can one day be reintroduced to the critically important reef.
• Sent a Riverbanks bird keeper to the University of Michigan Biological Station, where the Detroit Zoo manages a hand-rearing facility for Great Lakes piping plovers, contributing to the keeper’s professional development and valuable efforts to bolster populations of wild piping plovers with hand-reared chicks.
• Supported the International Rhino Foundation’s antipoaching efforts in Kruger National Park, South Africa, helping to protect rhinos and other imperiled wildlife from poaching.
• Partnered with universities, agencies, and organizations in South Carolina to coordinate conservation efforts for rare or endangered plants, including the federally endangered Helianthus schweinitzii ‘Schweinitz’s sunflower’ and the uncommon Hymenocallis coronaria ‘Rocky Shoals spider lily’.
• Launched a zero-waste plush recycling program at the Riverbanks Gift Shop in partnership with SSA Group and Wild Republic.
• Initiated our first survey establishing a baseline assessment of the knowledge and attitudes about wildlife trafficking to develop an effective communication strategy that will increase awareness about this critical issue.
Protectors of Wildlife
As one of 20 participants in the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ Florida Reef Tract Rescue Project, Riverbanks cares for and protects nearly 40 healthy coral colonies from threatened reefs in the Lower Florida Keys. The corals were collected in 2019 just prior to the area being devastated by Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease. Four years later, the reef experienced a coral crisis due to unprecedented ocean temperatures. Riverbanks sent an aquarist to the Keys Marine Lab to help an emergency team care for over 5,000 stressed corals that were pulled to onshore holding sites until they could be safely shifted to in-water nurseries. In light of the serious challenges facing corals, Riverbanks will continue to protect, propagate, and raise them in our Coral Conservation Lab to secure their future and the eventual return to a healthy ecosystem.

The 2024 promotion generated 2,457 pounds of food (equivalent to 2,047 meals). Since the program’s inception in 2010, Toucan Tuesdays has collected over 50,000 pounds of food to help feed hungry families in the Midlands.
• Partnered with the South Carolina Department of Social Services to serve more than 27,000 SNAP beneficiaries (20% from Richland County, 11% from Lexington County), providing $135,000 in discounted admission and $540,000 in savings
Protect Our Future Today
A world where wildlife and wild places thrive is vital to the future of all living things. At home and around the globe, animals and their habitats face growing threats from habitat loss to changes in weather patterns. It is our responsibility to do what we can to protect them.
We are grateful for the passion and expertise of the people at Riverbanks who are making a world of difference in the lives of the animals they care for and the humans they inspire. And, thanks to the generous and steadfast support of our members, donors, partners, and community, we have accomplished so much. But there is much more to be done.
To continue to provide the highest quality care for the animals and plants in our protection, deliver memorable experiences, and contribute to the vibrancy and economic strength of the Midlands, we need your help. Please consider making a donation to Riverbanks. Your investment will ensure a brighter future for the animals and plants in our care, hope for their counterparts in the wild, inspire the next generation of conservation stewards, and enhance the quality of life in our community.
Together, we can make the greatest impact.
Thank you for making a difference!
Your contributions are essential to helping fulfill Riverbanks’ mission-driven efforts. Last year, 83% of the revenue generated through membership and private donations directly supported Riverbanks Zoo and Garden’s operations, capital needs, and conservation efforts, making a big impact on wildlife and wild places.
Riverbanks is grateful for the following individuals and businesses who made generous contributions through cash and in-kind donations, sponsorships and/or Conservation Circle level memberships between May 1, 2024 and May 15, 2025.
