Keep up to date with everything we do across

Hello and welcome to a wonderful Spring season at Riverbank Arts Centre. January to March is packed with events to entertain, inspire and delight audiences of all ages. From film, family shows, music, theatre and comedy to visual arts and workshops there’s a great selection to choose from and too many events to single out here. At Riverbank Arts Centre, we have been working to build our programme across a range of art forms but we are particularly focussed on presenting the very best opportunities for young people to engage with, and experience the arts. Throughout the brochure there are many opportunities for schools, families and children to see a show, visit an exhibition, tailored specifically for young people, and also to get creative in participatory workshops. Throughout last year over 9000 children (and their grown-ups) visited Riverbank Arts Centre. It’s a privilege to see so many enjoy events here and we’re looking forward to doing it all again in 2019. Alongside our regular programme, we also have lots of exciting projects and partnerships going on in the background. These projects allow us to work in new and creative ways with artists, makers, community groups and audiences and you’ll find more information about these happenings in the coming pages. We love to hear from you so if you have any questions, comments or suggestions please do get in touch. Finally, a big thank you has to be extended to the small team that we have here, each of whom work very hard to deliver over 300 events every year and strive to make your visit as enjoyable as possible. Now, we invite you to delve into these pages and get planning your Spring outings, we’re looking forward to welcoming you in. Linda Geraghty, Venue Director

Capital Development of Riverbank Art Centre As many of you know, Riverbank Arts Centre is embarking on an exciting and ambitious project to renovate the theatre here in the heart of Newbridge. The development, once completed, will provide you, our patrons, and the broader community with an outstanding, accessible, and inspiring new space in which to enjoy a range of arts and entertainment. It will allow us to grow and expand the work that we present and produce; it will provide even more opportunities for young people, schools, community groups, and the general public to participate in creative adventures. We are working in the background to progress these plans and are looking forward to seeing work commence in the later half of 2019. In the meantime, we’ll be keeping you updated on how we’re progressing and would like to share the journey with you as we go along. While the design and construction plans are evolving, the team here will be imagining, planning and creating an exciting programme of activities for all to enjoy during the development phase. While we may be without a roof and four walls for a short while, we will continue to deliver a quality arts experience to audiences across the county. From the main street to the back streets, the highways and byways, and a host of unexpected locations, we’re hoping the possibilities for artistic encounters will be many. As we know more, you’ll know more, so do make sure you’re signed up for our newsletter and connected on social media and we’ll keep you posted.

7

our other work We have over 70 performances, screenings, exhibitions, workshops and literary events for the season ahead. Riverbank Arts Centre is evolving into a central hub for arts and creativity for county Kildare; a place where arts and culture become a real and tangible thing, accessible to everyone in our community. We are also busy behind the scenes, expanding and developing our programme, partnerships, and support structure for artists, audiences, and community alike. The following is a glimpse of some of these projects and collaborations:

Things We’ve been up to: Artists in Residence Collapsing Horse are artists in residence at Riverbank Arts Centre for 2018/2019. In November Dan Colley facilitated puppetry workshops for Kildare Youth Theatre and Griese Youth Theatre. These workshops used puppetry as medium for the wider conversation about the suspension of disbelief in theatre. The YT members made and animated their own puppets from simple materials to tell stories and demonstrate emotion.

What’s next: #WeAreThePoets We are delighted to be working on a new project supported by the Children’s Laureate programme #WeAreThePoets Poet Nell Regan and artist/illustrator Grainne Bath Enright will explore the unique landscape of the Pollardstown fen through a series of workshops with children from the Curragh Family Resource Centre.

8

our other work Fighting Words We are seeking volunteers for upcoming Fighting Words workshops this season - full training will be provided. Anyone who enjoys working in a creative environment with individuals and groups – and is a good listener – is welcome to volunteer. We will be working with local schools on workshops from February 2019. (see page 41 for details) Future Makers Collective Riverbank Arts Centre is embarking on an exciting new collaboration with the Future Makers Collective, who will work with us on delivering STEAM themed projects for schools, youth groups and general family audiences. Combining arts and science, the Future Makers Collective (FMC) is a group of students, educators, researchers, industry experts, creative professionals and cultural and professional institutions coming together to explore and support creative practice in the field of media and emerging technologies.

Partnerships In this upcoming season we are partnering with First Fortnight, Crooked House Theatre Company/NT Connections, Words Ireland, Access Cinema, Fighting Words, Mary Immaculate College (MIC, Limerick), Irish Film Institute, Creative Well Open Studio, Future Makers Collective and many other cultural organisations with a common goal - to bring the best of arts and creativity to our community.

The Free to Dream quilt is a large quilted parasol with eight colourful sections, comprising all the things its creators love to dream about. Another of these award-winning quilts is themed A Lifetime of Sewing and celebrates old sewing machines, ones used by mothers, grannies and aunties from years gone by, displayed on old spools of thread. Sewing is a life skill and a truly rewarding pastime (no wifi needed…!). This exhibition shows the fun, creativity and extraordinary craft of quilting - a timeless art.

RESIDENCY

Collapsing Horse in residency Riverbank Arts Centre is thrilled to host innovative and award-winning company Collapsing Horse for a residency in 2018-19. To date, the company has facilitated puppetry workshops for Kildare Youth Theatre and Griese Youth Theatre. These workshops used puppetry as medium for the wider conversation about the suspension of disbelief in theatre. The YT members made and animated their own puppets from simple materials to tell stories and demonstrate emotion. In 2019 Collapsing Horse will be working with children and older people, running storytelling workshops. This will facilitate intergenerational dialogue in Kildare and will also serve as background research for their new project A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings, based on a short story by Gabriel GarcĂa MĂĄrquez. This new show will be developed as part of their residency in Riverbank. Collapsing Horse are excited to begin this work in their new home at Riverbank Arts Centre and are very grateful to the other partners, Kildare County Council and the Arts Council.

42 Riverbank Arts Centre: Focus On Illustration

Since 2009, we’ve worked with numerous illustrators to bring each season to life with a unique cover. From 2009 to 2016, we worked with the wonderful Brian Coldrick, who created an exciting and different cover each season without fail - 24 illustrations in fact! In 2016 we decided to open up the illustration to other artists, as a means to showcase the talents of Irish or Irish based artists. Since then we’ve worked with Peter Donnelly, Sadie Kramer, Shona Shirley MacDonald, Fintan Taite, Holly Pereira, Dermot Flynn and Anne Marie Morrin. This season, following an open call, we commissioned artist and designer Gráinne Bath Enright to create this beautiful cover illustration entitled ‘forest’. Originally from Kildare, and now based in Dublin, Gráinne is an eclectic Irish artist with a passion for the natural world. After obtaining a degree in Set Design from IADT, Gráinne moved on to pursue a career in design and scenic painting, working on large scale cloths and sets. Gráinne has created a collection of Fine Art Archival Prints inspired by her passion for wild things, and her enthusiasm for the natural world and its habitats. https://www.instagram.com/grainne.b.e/
