Keep up to date with everything we do across

As we emerge from the Winter cocoon and look forward, with hope, to warmer days and long evenings, this programme sets out to entertain all ages from April through to August. From the harmonious songs of Kildare native Inni-K to the French-Canadian super group that is De Temps Antan; the internet sensation Rory’s Stories to Decadent Theatre’s Pump Girl , a raw and unflinching work by Abbie Spallen. The ever mesmerising aerial dance company Fidget Feet make a welcome return to Riverbank with their family show Hatch , and we continue to reach out to schools and young audiences with a great range of workshops, exhibitions and performances. In May, our Artists-in-Residence Collapsing Horse will provide an exciting intergenerational storytelling workshop for children and their grandparents and in July, the company will present a brand new work titled A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings . This season also sees the commencement of our literary project with the Curragh Family Resource Centre, poet Nell Regan and illustrator Grainne Bath Enright, supported by the Children’s Laureate programme #WeAreThePoets. Local drama groups, youth theatre and musical societies feature prominently in this season, culminating in JuneFest celebrations, and we look forward to see many familiar faces on the stage. This year marks the 10th anniversary for the team and board of Riverbank Arts Centre CLG. During these years, with the overarching aim of accessibility and inclusivity, the programme has broadened and grown across genres and ages. Establishing a successful Cinema programme, introducing a dedicated Children’s Gallery, a focus on developing a high quality family and school programme, producing innovative outreach projects and developing positive partnerships with local and national groups, have all yielded great benefits and allowed us to grow from strength to strength. All of this work is made possible with the continued and valued support of you, our patrons. With future plans to refurbish and improve the facilities here at the Arts Centre, we look forward to the exciting opportunities and potential that the next ten years will bring and hope you will share that journey with us. Linda Geraghty, Venue Director

visual arts

This exhibition provides opportunities for exploring children’s creative and imaginative potential in Visual Art with a particular emphasis on Visual Art and Science education (STEAM). Four interactive prototype helmets are on display as part of this exhibition, which are a combination of students and children’s ideas coming together to solve a particular problem, in this case how to construct an optical device exploring the art of perception. Come and try on these helmets to see how a bee, a jumping spider and a fly sees the world! The exhibition includes works by students from Scoil Na Naomh Uilig (5th Class), Newbridge who explored the theme during workshops with Future Makers Collective. The exhibition will highlight the importance of the ‘A’ (ARTS) in STEAM, allowing students to embrace innovation, enhance creative and critical thinking skills and solve problems. The School of Looking MIC is collaboration between Visual Art Lecturer Anne Marie Morrin (Mary Immaculate College), Connolly and Cleary, MIC B.Ed Visual Art Students and Donoughmore National School, Limerick. Creative Engagement Project with artist Paul Woods This exhibition is a culmination of a Creative Engagement project involving the 5th year students from the Curragh Post Primary School and visual artist Paul Woods. The students were encouraged to explore their inner and outer selves through the use of cut-out silhouettes of their profiles combined with an imaginative use of symbolism that illustrates their individuality. The individual pieces were then set against a background setting and environment of their choice. The project focused on perceptions and the dichotomy of the public-private persona. Students: Nicole Bailey, Adam Kane, Cian Marah, Jamie McGowan, Amy Murphy, Ana Postolachi, Niamh Reid, Lauren Sage, Natasha Tembo, Niamh Wall, Ben Whelan, Kim Whelan Teacher Antoinette Brennan

‘At school I was taught that men were the history makers, the doctors, the artists, the scientists. Later, when I was older, I discovered that this was simply not true. There have always been remarkable women and in Blazing a Trail I wanted to shine a light on some amazing female pioneers.

‘When I was a child the two things I loved most were reading and drawing. I imagined princesses and heroines who did extraordinary things, and I would draw these characters again and again. It was my way of reliving their adventures after their stories were over.

Blazing a Trail: Irish Women Who Changed the World These women didn’t have to be good, they had to be outstanding. Even better than the men, they had to be braver, fight harder, study longer. They also had to put up with people telling them that women weren’t strong enough to be aviators or clever enough to be scientists or even to vote! I hope every person who visits this exhibition, young or old, will find someone who inspires them and helps them blaze their own trail into the future.’

Can You Ever Forgive Me? Monday 27th May, 8pm €6 Early Bird/ €9

Here’s a quintessentially New York movie, where city loneliness can be soothed by a kind face at a bookstore counter. It’s the early 1990s, and Lee Israel is a writer out of fashion. Her celebrity biographies aren’t selling, she can’t get over her ex-girlfriend and she’s been thrown out of every literary party in town for drunkenness. On top of it all, her cat is sick. Dark times call for desperate measures. Spurred on by roguish drinking buddy Jack (Richard E Grant), Israel turns to a get-rich-quick scheme that uses her research skills plus a little knack for impersonation. Next thing, she’s selling some ‘newly discovered’ correspondence from Noël Coward, amongst other literary giants. Director Marielle Heller follows The Diary of a Teenage Girl with this irresistible tale of female crime genius, working with Nicole Holofcener’s (Enough Said) beautifully calibrated adaptation of Israel’s own memoir. At Eternity’s Gate Monday 17th June, 8pm €6 (Early Bird) / €9

Julian Schnabel’s ravishingly tactile and luminous new film takes a fresh look at the last days of Vincent van Gogh, and in the process revitalises our sense of the artist as a living, feeling human being. At Eternity’s Gate is a journey inside the world and mind of a person who, despite skepticism, ridicule and illness, created some of the world’s most beloved and stunning works of art. This is not a forensic biography, but rather scenes based on Vincent van Gogh’s (Academy Award® Nominee Willem Dafoe) letters, common agreement about events in his life that present as facts, hearsay, and moments that are just plain invented. The heart of At Eternity’s Gate is Willem Dafoe’s shattering performance: his Vincent is at once lucid, mad, brilliant, helpless, defeated, and, finally, triumphant. 46 Riverbank Arts Centre: Focus On Illustration

Since 2009, we’ve worked with numerous illustrators to bring each season to life with a unique cover. From 2009 to 2016, we worked with the wonderful Brian Coldrick, who created an exciting and different cover each season without fail - 24 illustrations in fact! In 2016 we decided to open up the illustration to other artists, as a means to showcase the talents of Irish or Irish based artists. Since then we’ve worked with Peter Donnelly, Sadie Kramer, Shona Shirley MacDonald, Fintan Taite, Holly Pereira, Dermot Flynn, Grainne Bath Enright and Anne Marie Morrin. This season, following an open call, we commissioned artist Marta Baricikowska to create this beautiful cover illustration. Marta Barcikowska is a Galway-based artist who works with photography, collage, stop-motion animation and also more traditional methods of illustration, involving pens and pencils. She has worked with Galway Theatre Festival, Moonfish Theatre, My Fellow Sponges, Emma Lohan, Steven Sharpe, Grounds For Invasion and many others. Originally from Poland, Marta holds an MA in archaeology. More information about Marta’s work can be found on: www.photobymarta.com

Visit of German Ambassador, H.E. Mrs Deike Potzel

Anne Robinson (Producer), Damian Callinan (Writer/ Actor) and Mark Grentell (Director) and Kildare football legend Dermot Earley joined us for a Q&A after the screening. The Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy, Simon Mamouney and his family attended - and brought surprise gifts for the audiences including an AFL football and much loved Aussie biscuits, Tim-Tams!

In February, we welcomed the German Ambassador, H.E. Mrs Deike Potzel for an IFI educational screening of The Silent Revolution/ Das schweigende Klassenzimmer. The Ambassador introduced the film and took part in a Q&A with the students, giving a vivid personal account of her years as a teenager in East Berlin and in particular, the night the Berlin Wall came down. We had school groups from three neighbouring counties (Offaly, Tipperary and Meath) as well as two local schools in attendance.
