Dir: Jonathan Glazer / UK / 2013 / 108 mins / Cert: 15A Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Robert J. Goodwin, Krystof Hádek, Paul Brannigan, Jeremy McWilliams / Language: English Visually and aurally audacious and as slippery in form as its central character, Jonathan Glazer’s (Sexy Beast, Birth) elliptical sci-fi about an alien creature (Scarlett Johansson) who stalks down human prey is a brilliant amalgam of fantasy and reality. In a stunning early sequence of metamorphosis, the naked femme fatale dons the attire of her predecessor and goes out on the prowl in a non-descript van, effortlessly procuring not-so gullible lads from the backstreets of Glasgow and local highways and luring them into an unimaginable void. Filmed on location in Scotland, where not all the male victims were knowing participants, the filmmaking recalls the realism of Ken Loach as much as the surrealism of David Lynch. Glazer has created an entirely distinctive film, both creepy and luminous in its metaphysical precision. - Clare Stewart / BFI London Film Festival 2013 ***** THE GUARDIAN ***** THE TELEGRAPH ***** TIME OUT LONDON

Dir: Dustin Hoffman / UK / 2012 / 98 minutes / Cert: 12A Starring: Pauline Collins, Billy Connolly, Tom Courtney, Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith Lifelong friends Wilf (Billy Connolly) and Reggie (Ton Courtney), together with former colleague Cissy (Pauline Collins), are residents of Beecham House—a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times, also Reggie’s ex-wife and the fourth and most celebrated member of their former quartet, moves into the home to everyone’s surprise, the plans for this year’s concert start to unravel. As old grudges threaten, it becomes apparent that having four of the finest singers in English operatic history under one roof offers no guarantee that the show will go on.
