EUGENIUS RIVADO is an aspiring and reali-idealistic architect, designer and artist who believe a progressive and dynamic human society and civilization for greater good is done and reflected through the product of the mind of man itself. As does time flows so does human mind, thus he spend much of his time learning, studying, trying new things and methods. Throughout his education years, he has been participated in many commitee and organizations, has been both led by and lead for a different backgrounds of people. His experience established his style of leadership which is focused on cautious approach and full of preparation, and supervised actions of every member of the team. As an individual, he is not and never locked in single method, single software, instead he like to combining everything that he has or even not yet learnt to work effectively thus made him very adaptive in any kind of working environment.

Lies in the tropical forest, not far from the foothills of Kelir Mountain, Central Java, stood a natural tall rocky formations that has a potential for rock climbing sport location. The rock formation is part of the bigger masterplan that includes an art gallery, sightseeing station above the rock, glamping (glamorous camping) site, and an amphitheatre. This project is part of communityactiontoimprovelocaltourism potential.

To reduce wasted space caused by parking site ramps, the art gallery is designed to “float“ on top of the slope, supported only at one end. This prompted a structural challengethat can be solved byextensive coordination between architect and engineer. The final desired design should be structurally safe and sound without compromising the architectural beauty and usability.

LIGHTHOUSE LIGHTBEACON & INDONESIA

Indonesia is an archipelagic country. Nowadays Indonesia has archipelagic sea lane (ALKI) that extends from the strait of Malacca, Singapore, South China Sea, and Indian Ocean; Pacific Ocean towards Indian Ocean which is not just occupied by local trade routes but international from Asia and Americas. Indonesia as the sovereign country in charge of the archipelagic sea have to ensure the safety of the vessels by maintaining the aids to navigation: lighthouses and lightbeacons. The architectural design also should reflect Nusantara Indonesia rich culture without overlooking structural constraints including but not limited to wave, seismic and wind.

There is a total of 104 sites of lightbeacon and lighthouse combined spread in 22 navigational districts across the archipelago (104 unique design). The sites designworkare splitted between each member of architect and civil team. The works displayed in this portfolio are the selected ones from portion done by the author only

In north of Jepara, in one of the Karimunjawa’s Islands there is one small island that is popular for its inhabitant determination towards Wayang Kulit culture and it has been noticed byJeparagovernment. It isproposedforalighthousecomplexthatcouldaccomodateaWayang Kulitshow,a“sanggar“forthetrainingandeducationforfuture“dalang (puppeteer)“ and “sinden“ (singer), and lastly aWayang Museum.

A sculpture of “Gunungan“ which has deep philosophy in Wayang culture, furnished with gold like coating is placed on the body of the lighthouse. The lighthouse is being “carried“ by a ship like building. This ship is based on ancient mightJavaneseship“Djong“thatisalsoproduced on Jepara region. The whole architecture symbollized the island where the lighthouse sit becomes a pioneer of Wayang culture and sail it towards the edge ofthe worlds.

“Pinisi” schooner ship is the pride of South Sulawesi and Indonesians. The lighthouse design materializes the concept of Pinisi especially the form of the ship masts. The tall mighty Pinisi schooners mast become the tube steel structures of the lighthouse crown. The 40 m tall tower will be visible from afar, thus visualizing the Pinisi ship reaching to the farworlds.

Tasikmalaya is full of cultural heritage of handicrafts for example a decorated umbrella “payung geulis” which literally means “beautiful lady’s umbrella”. This craft has been existed from colonial era-that Dutch ladies likedto carrythese. The craft is so valuable since its done in a careful, long, and tedious process handcrafted by Tasikmalayan expert craftmans. Its colorful trait displayed as white, red and blue-colored paint in a pattern on the walls of the light beacon.

Karimata islands is a home to many ancient inscriptions. Some of the ancient inscriptions are written by ancient Mongols. One of the inscriptions told that Mongol tried to invade Java, Majapahit Empire but failed. The light house design is based off MajapahitArchitecturetoremind that mighty kingdoms once looms in Indonesia archipelago that able to fend off foreign invaders

Banten are a product of the once glory of Islamic trading kingdom, Banten Sultanate. During Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa or TirtayasaofBanten reign, Banten became one of the kingdoms that is successfully maintained peaceful open trading relationship with Europeans. Banten Sultanate has an armada of ships that fascinated early Dutch explorers that described it ‘‘shaped like European galleys with four cannons in the front hull’’. This cannon then becomes a decoration on top of the lighthouse in each wall sides. The cannons doesn’t symbolize aggression but symbolizes the “striking influence” from Banten to every part ofthe world.

COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN BASED LIGHTBEACON SHELL MODEL

A CAD model of typical and experimental lightbeacon shape with various sizes is needed for civil / naval engineering team analysis process. This is done efficiently with parametric, computed mass model using REVIT and DYNAMOBIM.

Input Variables: Radius for each segment, elevation for each segment, “fillet“ radius and direction for curved corners

Script to process the input variables to readable output data. e.g.: each radius define a circle with each own elevation, then “loft“ operation is performed. The result is a 3d mesh

The output is realized as a surface of REVIT Mass family

The REVIT Mass is realized with Wall by face objectsthat can be exported to other 3d application or performing BIM documentation (section and plans)

Other operation to show the visualization of finished lightbeacon architecture, using LUMION for example

The revit mass is converted to 3d face CAD file

3D CAD face is imported in SAP2000 for analysis. Input as shell layer

Excel data imported and flattened to single list

Create circle from the list of radius and elevation

Split to segments

Create fillet segments

Algorithm to separate segments to faces (walls) and fix list issue with fillets*

Loft surface andoutput to RFA

Find and pick different fillet direction from list*

*For the consistency of curved corner angle, the fillet radius have to be same. This creates a problem for sides that have length smaller than 4 times of the fillet radius (diameter of 2 fillet, since each corner of the sides is filleted) which is unable to fillet therefore have to switch direction (to outside). Due to DYNAMO / author himself limitation, the difference of the fillet direction messed the order of the list (in this case, a list with sublist of each edges in one segment). Thus, the differences expressed in boolean are listed to find the “culprit“. Then the order of the culprit is swapped inside every sublists containing the culprit. This has to be done since a good order of list ensuring the success of loft operation.
