The BIG Re-think Tectonic Materiality of Interior Elements

Master Tutor: Prof. Kireet Patel

Studio Tutors: Rishav Jain, Aparajita Basu

Assistants: Jay Odharia, Jhanavi Parikh

Brief Outline:

The Big Rethink is a series of postgraduate interior design studios focused on developing a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments within the interior design field.

This semester, the fourth one in the series, the studio challenges the concept of Tectonic Materiality of interior elements. It offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior elements and tectonic materiality through experience, organization and construction. The studio focuses on representing experiential and ephemeral qualities, planning and organising strategies, detailing and construction techniques, exploring the relationship of interior elements and tectonic materiality.

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to:

Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice.

Ability to translate/represent the design argument/position/ approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes.

Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position.

Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

“Weaving” Wood The Poetry Of Wooden Weaving

Week 01-04 | Design Boot-Camp Process:

Design Boot-camp discusses interior design as a systematic field of specialization emphasizing a position where interior experience and interior space could originate/alter/impact our knowledge of the built environment. And discusses the ideas of drawing, analyzing, making, and representing the specialized field of interior design.this is done through two exercises- the first exercise usesdrawing as a tool to extract interior design specialization and the secong exercise uses model making as a tool to represent the extracted interior design specialization elements/ Qualities/ experiences.

Architect: Kengo Kuma Associates

Location: Fukuoka-shi,Japan Area: 2281 sq. ft.

Project Title: Weaving Of Wood

With the complex weaving,it creates a feeling of fluidity, a thoughtful cave-like space.

The recessed glass facade is made of toughed glass.

Uses of an intricate diagonally woven cedar wood lattice – the most visually striking aspect of the space.

It uses a unique system of weaving thin woods diagonally.

The building is made of 2,000 stick-like parts in the sizes of 1.3m – 4m length and 6cm section.

Familiarising - “Know it more through - Optimization”

Brief

In a project, elements define a Language of materiality. Materiality is often perceived as a derivation of the properties and characteristics of whata material can offer. To comprehend materiality and its implications in a spatial context, one needs to observe and critically analyze the preconceived notions about the subject. The analysis can lead to a refined set of norms that can be further evaluated with the design processes for spatial environments.

Ex. 01 | Tectonics & Materiality

Part 01 | Exploring concepts of Tectonic Materiality

Hypothesis Concern/ Issue

Process:

Reuse of traditional building elements,to incorporate new programs and contemporary materials can highlight and restore the authentic values that they posses. Through specific understanding of site elements and current context, aporgram can be applied to illustrate the needs of the present and future, while illustrating the past.He says “the interior will utilize weaving and framing of new tectonic to emphasize the materiality of the elements.

The combination of both traditional and modern materials/ elements can create projects with extensive memory and purpose.

The details articulate construction and its processes. The way old traditional elements and modern materials come together to emphasize the tectonics of the building, and its relationships are expressed with their intentions, become possible when the materiality of the elements is altered and tested. It is the expression of a system of joinery and may have more of the qualities of a narrative than a technical expression.

“Reusing old traditional elements, frames new tectonic to emphasize the materiality of theelements in the interior language.

02 | Role 01 Historical practices through a project representing an ‘era’ Process:

The space is designed to display 15 dream machines designed by leonardo Da Vinci. An exhibition space for all age group.this space will provide an experience to dive into the world of dream machines with spatial and visual flexibility along with an experiential journey.

Role one emphasizes on the role of an interior designer in an adaptive reuse project to bring out the experiential and ephemeral qualities of the space. The experience of the interior space is not only achieved through the making of some elements but also through how it is composed with other elements, how light impacts the perception of the user, and how the finishes, colours, textures add to its ambience. This experience is conveyed by transforming the site to inhabit the 15 Dream Machines such that an interior language is derived from the hypothesis.

Architect - Living Edge Architects and Designers (LEAD)

Process:

This role focuses on the exploration of reusing old traditional elements in order to change the language of interior design. The entire space is designed in a way which portrays the perception of a carved-out space with continuous elements. This continuity creates a journey with a seamless yet exciting experience. The elements evolved with the idea of utilizing the old architectural elements of traditional houses or vernacular building elements inspired the formulation for integral components of the one design. The elements are designed to change the original use and imagination in various spaces by adding value to the old elements thus contributing new life in space.

Ideating Role 3 Of Interior Designer Collaborative Practices-Designing through 3D Drawings

Process:

The project experiments with the envelope with different levels with combination of semi-open and covered spaces. The transition in the space is a woven journey that interacts with the user through various form of elements.

It is designed with a unique identity through a thousand varying lengths of repurposed wooden carved patties blurring boundaries while directing view and movement. These suspended wooden carved patties filter exterior light and views into interior space. spidery pixelated shadows are cast on the floor. the choice of the elements in space gives warmth and familiarity mixed with the excitement of the unexpected. The main principle of the space is to emphasize the elements which is creating a focal point in the space which articulates the movement in the space.

Foreword:

The idea of ‘Reuse’ is foregrounds the design conceptually as traditional elements compose the different elements that becomes different attributes of space. The elements evolved with the idea of utilizing the old architectural elements of traditional houses or vernacular building elements inspired the formulation for integral components of the one design. The elements are designed to change the original use and imagination in various spaces by adding value to the old elements thus contributing new life in space. The current scenario and issues will lead to conscious living in the coming future. This includes the utilization of the ‘product’ or ‘material’ to its fullest and regenerating/reusing the disposed material for another use. Designed with an inspiration of light and the nature of the space this is to link the people and their surroundings through interior space. The interior’s original purpose may have been to draw attention to what it carries, but by adding porosity, the illusion of complete openness is created, which is purely optical. The interiors are exposed at night when the lights are on, and during the day when natural light is abundant, it streams in to form its own monument through the interplay of light reflections. This produces a parallel experience of interior and outdoor setting that improves the visitor’s sensory perception in a way that evokes the explorative intricacy of Da Vinci’s mind. The main principle of the space is to emphasize the elements which is creating a focal point in the space which articulates the movement in the space. These continuous weaving elements create a journey with an interesting experience in the space for visitors and users thus embedding/ reinforecing a new culture of ‘ancient modern’ understanding in space.
